        Lenin In Zurich.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1976. First edition of Solzhenitsyn's account of Russian revolutionary history. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page in his entire hand, "To Lewis Arnold Alexander Solzhenitsyn March 1995." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. Translated from the Russian by H.T. Willetts. Alexander Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, and short story writer. He was an outspoken critic of the Soviet Union and its totalitarianism and helped to raise global awareness of its Gulag forced labor camp system. He was allowed to publish only one work in the Soviet Union, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962), in the periodical Novy Mir. After this he had to publish in the West, most notably Cancer Ward (1968), August 1914 (1971), and The Gulag Archipelago (1973). Solzhenitsyn was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature". Solzhenitsyn was afraid to go to Stockholm to receive his award for fear that he wouldn't be allowed to reenter. He was eventually expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974, but returned to Russia in 1994 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

        Running Dog One and Done

Chicago: Running Dog Press, 1976. Xeroxed sheets fine, all laid in folded wrapper, near fine, all housed in a very good, lightly rubbed, printed manilla envelope with sticker residue where it was once sealed. Scarce, OCLC locates two examples.. First Edition. Loose sheets in folder, all housed in printed envelope. A mail art inspired publication created by Mike Crane as a vehicle for Chicago artists to better disseminate and correspond with the larger, international art world. The publication consists of 135 loose pages with contributions by 76 artists, about half from Chicago. The pages are all black and white and printed on Xerox, a tool popular with the Department of Generative Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In general, the publication coheres around the systematic and often schematic conceptualism of the Generative Art movement. Contributing artists included Mary Jane Dougherty, Ken Friedman, Peg Griffith, Klaus Groh, Carl Johnson, Yutaka Matsuzawa, Charley Ray, Jerry Saltz, Endre Tot, Allen Ross, Horacio Zabala, and others. In the spirit of mail art, each contributor's address is listed at the end.

Taxonomic literature. A Selective guide to botanical publications and collections with dates, commentaries and types. Second edition

Utrecht, Bohn, Scheltema & Holkema, 1976-1988. Seven volumes (25 cm), I (A - G, 1976): 1136 pp. II (H - Le, 1979): xviii, 991 pp. III (Lh - O, 1981): xii, 980 pp. IV (P - Sak, 1984): ix, 1214 pp. V (Sal - Ste, 1985): 1066 pp. VI (Sti - Vuy, 1986): 926 pp. VII (W - Z, 1988): lvi, 653 pp. Uniform publisher's cloth (no dust jackets issued). - The basic bibliography for botanical literature (commonly known as TL-2), an indispensable tool for the bibliographical description of botanical books printed before and after Linnaeus's Species Plantarum (1753). The work is organised by author in alphabetical order; a typical entry contains a brief biographical note followed by a list of publications (in chronological order) including locations of copies. The work is particularly useful for establishing the publication histories of books appearing in parts, or in multiple editions. Stafleu and Cowan compiled the first volume (authors A-G) without external funding and visited a limited number of libraries. After its publication in 1976, funding was obtained from the National Science Foundation, and henceforth the collections of more than 100 libraries were surveyed. To remedy the deficiency of the first volume, Stafleu set to work on a supplement, which eventually extended to eight volumes (published 1992-2009). The supplement is still obtainable from the publisher (vol. 6 in reprint of 2004), Koeltz Scientific Books (€1787; ISBN 9031302244; www.koeltz.com). ¶ Fine set with minimal traces of use and no marks of ownership.

        Interview With The Vampire

New York: Knopf(1976). 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Edition of author's first book, and SIGNED by the author in red ink on a loosely laid in postcard-siz ed piece of paper. The book is bound in dark gray paper covered boards with a black cloth spine with gilt printing, and with red upper page edges. It is straight, clean, tight, the red upper page edge is in excellent condition, and it has no soiling or handwriting; there is, however, a small 'blind' (no color) personal name embossment stamp to the upper title page corner. The dustjacket is the notorious gold foil finish, almost impossible not to find scratched or creased badly. It is price intact, at $8.95, and is really in excellent condition; no hard creases even to the flaps (a couple of small, short and faint wrinkles--one to upper back panel and one to upper front panel--that show when you slant it just right in the light), just a couple of small surface scratch lines to spine and lower front panel that haven't removed the gold color from the foil, and just a mere touch of shelving wear to spine end edges. Quite an excellent example of Ms. Rice's first book! ; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 24, NF/NF

Von dem greüwlichen Laster der Trunckenhayt .[Augsburg, Heinrich Steiner, 1533?]. 4to. With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 x 12 cm) on title-page showing an elaborate banquet and a vomitting man, by H. Weiditz (the Petrarca master), decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. Early 19th-century shell-marbled boards.

      - Goedeke II, 10,6; Hayn Gotendorf II, 357; Kaczerowsky, Sebastian Franck Bibliographie (1976), A 4 (5 copies); VD16 F2142 (2 copies). One of at least three and possibly five editions that VD16 lists under 1533 of "On the horrible vice of drunkenness", a treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages, probably first published in 1531. Kaczerowsky and others regard the present edition as the first, published in 1528. It is also of medical interest, since Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness. He attributed a variety of social ills to alcohol, including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. All of his works were placed on the index of prohibited books in 1559.Most of the editions with the 1531 date have 32 leaves, expanded to 38 leaves in one with the 1531 date and those with the 1533 date. Since the present edition also has 38 leaves, it seems likely to have been printed in 1533. With 5 pages of bibliographical notes in German on 3 leaves inserted before the title-page, the first 2, dated 1857, signed by the owner Friedrich Latendorf (1831-1898), who later edited Sebastian Franck's erste namenlose Sprichwörtersammlung vom Jahre 1532 in getreuen Abdruck, 1876. They discuss the dates and order of the first editions and issues. With the inserted leaves crudely attached to the title-page with tape in the gutter margin, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor foxing.

The Red Books of Humphry Repton Antony House (Cornwall), Attingham Park (Shropshire), Sherringham Hall (Norfolk) & Explanatory Volume by Edward Malins.

The Basilisk Press London 1976 - Folio & 4to. 4 volumes, set. (3 quarto volumes and 1 folio). Limited edition facsimiles. #488 of 515 sets (of which 500 were for sale). Quarter red morocco with marbled boards, gilt, housed in individual slipcases within a brown box. The paper has been specially made to match the Whatman paper Repton used in the original books. Illustrated throughout in collotype, using up to 10 colours, reproducing Repton's text and water colour designs for the improvement of each estate. Edward Malins' text is accompanied by black and white photographs of the properties taken in Summer 1975 by Eric de Maré. Still in the publisher's packaging for delivery to the original owner who seems never to have opened the parcel (this bookseller now has in order to catalogue it). As new. The Red Books (so-called because of the morocco binding) were an inspired piece of promotion by England's most successful landscape architect after Capability Brown. Around 300 were produced, of which roughly half survive. Each volume was unique to the property and the use of overlays enabled 'before-and-after' views. The Basilisk Press facsimiles are of the highest quality and allow a better appreciation of the art of Humphry Repton which Edward Malins' supplementary volume puts in its historical context.         Roots.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1976. First edition, later printing of Haley's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by Alex Haley to actor Richard Pryor on the front free endpaper, "April 30, 1977 For Richard Pryor, my brother and a beautiful human being - The warmest of wishes to you and your family from the entire family at Kunta Kinte! Brotherly love! Alex Haley." Richard Pryor was a comedian, actor, and social critic. Pryor was known for uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues, which employed colorful vulgarities and profanity, as well as racial epithets. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time: Jerry Seinfeld called Pryor "The Picasso of our profession"and Bob Newhart heralded Pryor as "the seminal comedian of the last 50 years". Dave Chappelle said of Pryor, "You know those, like, evolution charts of man? He was the dude walking upright. Richard was the highest evolution of comedy." An excellent association copy. Fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Jacket design by Al Nagy. Published in October 1976 amid significant advance expectations, Roots was immediately successful, garnering a slew of positive reviews and debuting at #5 of The New York Times Best Seller list. By mid-November, it had risen to the #1 spot on the list. The television adaptation of the book aired in January 1977 and within seven months of its release, Roots had sold over 1.5 million copies. In total, Roots spent 22 weeks at the #1 spot on The Times' list, including each of the first 18 weeks of 1977. Ultimately, it was on the list for a total 46 weeks. Together, the success of the novel and its 1977 television adaptation, sparked an explosion of interest in the fields of genealogy and researching family histories. Haley earned a Pulitzer Prize special award in 1977 for Roots. The television miniseries garnered many awards, including nine Emmys and a Peabody. It was remade again in 2016 starring Malachi Kirby, Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
