The Red Books of Humphry Repton. Antony House (Cornwall), Attingham Park (Shropshire), Sherringham Hall (Norfolk) & Explanatory Volume by Edward Malins.

4 volumes, set. (3 quarto volumes and 1 folio). Limited edition facsimiles. #488 of 515 sets (of which 500 were for sale). Edward Malins' text is accompanied by black and white photographs of the properties taken in Summer 1975 by Eric de Maré. Still in the publisher's packaging for delivery to the original owner who seems never to have opened the parcel (this bookseller now has in order to catalogue it). As new.The Red Books (so-called because of the morocco binding) were an inspired piece of promotion by England's most successful landscape architect after Capability Brown. Around 300 were produced, of which roughly half survive. Each volume was unique to the property and the use of overlays enabled 'before-and-after' views. The Basilisk Press facsimiles are of the highest quality and allow a better appreciation of the art of Humphry Repton which Edward Malins' supplementary volume puts in its historical context.

Boothby makes his first appearance in the biography on page 214 when, during the General Strike of 1926, he wrote Churchill a letter putting the case for the coal miners. He became Churchill's Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1927. During the Abdication Crisis, Churchill's behaviour provoked another letter: 'What happened this afternoon makes me feel that it is almost impossible for those who are most devoted to you personally, to follow you blindly (as we would like to do) in politics. Because they cannot be sure where the hell they are going to be landed next.' Then again, in May 1939, he wrote, 'One of the few things in my life of which I am proud is that in all matters of major policy during the past 5 years I have hitched my waggon to your star [. . .] Long after the names of the miserable creatures who are now supposed to govern us have been lost in a merciful oblivion, the incredible services you have rendered this country since 1933 will be remembered.'         PADDY PORK'S HOLIDAY

      - GOODALL,JOHN. PADDY PORK'S HOLIDAY: MANUSCRIPT. Offered here is the original book of watercolor drawings for Goodall's picture book Paddy Pork's Holiday, published in 1976 by Macmillan in London and Atheneum in New York. It is bright and in Fine condition with almost the complete story (it does not have the publisher's title and first drawing). The pen and watercolor drawings by Goodall are laid into a folder. There are thirteen two-sided drawings measuring 10 1/2 by 5 inches, each with a flap that changes the scene. There are two two-sided drawings measuring 7 by 5 inches which do not have flaps. Done with vivid colors and set in pre - industrial England, this is the story about a lovely little pig named Paddy Pork who has many misadventures when he ventures out on a holiday. When he goes for a swim, a dog steals his clothing. He sees a scarecrow in a nearby field and "borrows" its tuxedo. Because of his fancy garb when he ventures into town he is mistaken for Herr Grunt a concert pianist. He is taken on stage but just before he is meant to perform, he manages to escape and runs home, happy to be with his family again. There is no text and none is needed because the pictures with the moveable flaps, tell the story. Sold with a first edition of the book. [Attributes: First Edition]

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York 1976 - First edition of Solzhenitsyn's account of Russian revolutionary history. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page in his entire hand, "To Lewis Arnold Alexander Solzhenitsyn March 1995." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. Translated from the Russian by H.T. Willetts. Alexander Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, and short story writer. He was an outspoken critic of the Soviet Union and its totalitarianism and helped to raise global awareness of its Gulag forced labor camp system. He was allowed to publish only one work in the Soviet Union, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962), in the periodical Novy Mir. After this he had to publish in the West, most notably Cancer Ward (1968), August 1914 (1971), and The Gulag Archipelago (1973). Solzhenitsyn was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature". He was eventually expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974, but returned to Russia in 1994 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Scarce, OCLC locates two examples.. First Edition. Loose sheets in folder, all housed in printed envelope.
