        Taxi Driver Typescript

[Bantam] [1976], [NY] - Partial typescript for Elman's novelization of the Paul Schrader screenplay for the classic Martin Scorcese film, ranked 52nd on the American Film Institute's top films of all time. Approximately 75 typescript pages total, about evenly split between multiple reworkings of the first eight pages and the final 13 pages, with five drafts of the first page alone. Approximately nine pages from the middle of the book. Most pages are ribbon-copy; some are carbon typescript; only 13 pages are photocopy. The majority of the pages bear extensive holograph corrections in Elman's hand, showing a labored, almost pained attempt to do justice to the Schrader screenplay, a copy of which is also included, with an additional 19 revision pages of its own. Accompanied by a typed letter signed by Paul Schrader to Elman (although apparently after the fact as it is written on "American Gigolo" stationery and dated 1980), transmitting a copy of the 1974 script and saying that he "subsequently did more work on the script, but this is a fair representation of what was intended." Also included is a cassette tape labeled "Taxi 2," on which Elman dictates portions of his novelization. Elman's pages are in a variety of conditions: some are wrinkled and edgeworn; some are on acidifying paper; some are fine. The screenplay is near fine; the revisions are heavily coffee-stained but entirely legible. Elman studied writing at Stanford with Yvor Winters and wrote a number of novels, several books of nonfiction and reportage, and published four poetry collections. His novelization of Taxi Driver, one of the greatest films of the last century, was clearly a more literary undertaking than most such novelizations are. Also included, for reasons unknown to us, is one page of lyrics of an Australian folk song. A unique archive pertaining to a great film. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Interview with the Vampire

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1976. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with a couple of minute scuffs to the easily-worn, gold-foil jacket. A lovely copy of the author's first book, and the first entry in her Vampire Chronicles. Basis for the Neil Jordan film with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea, Christian Slater, and 12 year-old Kirsten Dunst in her breakthrough role. A widely influential book, as seen by the cottage-industry of vampiric anti-heroes which generally follows the themes and characterizations created by Rice (vampire-angst, vampires who only bite bad guys, vampires who love puppies, etc.). .

        The Education of Little Tree

(n.p.): Delacorte. (1976). The uncorrected proof copy of Carter's most famous book, which its publisher originally identified as "a true story" while it identified the author as a "part-blood Cherokee who is Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations." A dozen years after its initial publication, The Education of Little Tree was chosen by independent booksellers as the book they most liked to sell and it became a word-of-mouth bestseller in a paperback edition published by the University of New Mexico Press. Later, Carter was discovered to be a white man from Alabama who had worked for right-wing politician George Wallace, writing racist propaganda. Carter may have written racist tracts for George Wallace, but in The Education of Little Tree he endorsed humanist values of a high order, which he ascribed to Native American traditions -- respect for the land and one's family, honoring one's elders, promoting generosity and good faith, abhorring hypocrisy and brutality. Even as fiction, The Education of Little Tree raises serious and difficult questions, but it has been taken by many as strongly promoting a healthy sensitivity to, and respect for, Native American traditions and perspectives. In some circles, the question of the book's authenticity is today less of an issue than that of its sentimentality. "Little Tree" handwritten on spine; paperclip imprint top edge of front cover; near fine in tall wrappers. Extremely scarce: this is the only copy of the proof we've ever seen, and it dates from an era when, first, proofs were less widely distributed than they later came to be and, second, they were less likely to be viewed as collectibles and filtered into the rare book market, and more likely to simply be discarded after use. First Edition. Softcover.

Tome V, VII-695 pages. Tome VI, VI-705 pages. Tome VlI, XV-765 pages.

        Stories & Illustrations by Harley

[No place]: Charlatan Press. 1976. First. First edition. Introduction by Allen Ginsberg (misspelled on the cover as "Ginsburg"). Octavo. [26]pp. Papercovered boards with cloth spine and illustrated in full color. Very good or better with rubbing to the boards, light wear at the corners and a few tiny scrapes. Inscribed and Signed in a childish hand by author/illustrator Harley Flanagan, who at 12 became the drummer for the punk band, The Stimulators, and went on to found the seminal hardcore band, The Cro-Mags. Flanagan was just nine when this collection of his two self-illustrated stories was published by his mother, a hippie named Rosebud who had lived on a farm with Ginsberg and enlisted the poet to pen the introduction to this volume. An uncommon book in any state, we've never seen another copy with a contemporary inscription from Flanagan. Certainly one of the more unusual items from Ginsberg's career and a curious piece of punk history. Morgan B123 .

New York: Knopf, (1976) - Very Near Fine First Edition of this landmark title in its equally Near Fine fragile dust jacket. The gold, simulated metallic jacket, notoriously difficult to find in really excellent condition, is here a very presentable example, bright and fresh, with but an inch or so of creasing at top left of front panel and a minuscule chip to spine crown. All told, a lovely copy. Basis, of course, for the now cult classic 1994 Neil Jordan-directed film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst.         The Selfish Gene.

Oxford University, New York 1976 - First American editon of the author's classic work. Signed by Richard Dawkins on the title page. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket showing only light wear to the spine tips. A very sharp copy. The Selfish Gene was extremely popular when first published by Oxford University Press in 1976. It created "a silent and almost immediate revolution in biology" (Grafen and Ridley, 2009), and it has sold over a million copies and has been translated into more than 25 languages. " Best said by the New York Review of Books, it "was a smash hit.Best of all, Dawkins laid out this biology-some of it truly subtle-in stunningly lucid prose." In 1976, Arthur Cain, one of Dawkins's tutors at Oxford in the 1960s, called it a "young man's book." Dawkins received the compliment well and explained that it was allusion to A.J. Ayer's Language, Truth, and Logic (Dawkins, 2006). "This important book could hardly be more exciting," said The Economist, and "[t]he presentations are remarkable for their clarity and simplicity, intelligible to any schoolchild, yet so little condescending as to be a pleasure to the professional" (American Scientist).
