Autograph letter to B. Schott's Söhne Musikverlag signed in full.

      - Most probably unpublished. Not in the most comprehensive collection of Bartók's letters: Bartók Béla: Levelei, ed. János Demény (Budapest: Zenem kiadó, 1976).The publication by Schott that offended Bartók was volume 12 of Das Lied der Völker, an anthology of folksongs edited by Heinrich Möller (1876-1958). The volume, issued in 1929, reprinted two of Bartók's folksong arrangements without permission. In addition, Möller attacked Bartók’s scholarly work on the subject. As Schott was not bowing to Bartók’s pressure for satisfaction, Bartók took revenge and reviewed Möller’s publication in the Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft, August- September 1931, pp. 580-582. The review sparked a polemical exchange with Möller that lasted well into the following year. See "The Bartók-Möller Polemical Interchange," in Béla Bartók Studies in Ethnomusicology, ed. Benjamin Suchoff (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1996), pp. 142- 157. 1 page. Quarto (275 x 220 mm). Dated Budapest, June 20, 1930. In blue ink on stationery with watermark "Szenabella Stationer Szénásy Budapest." In German (with translation).Bartók is furious about a volume of Hungarian folksongs published by Schott. He has asked the publisher for "corrections," but Schott refuses to take action:"I am sorry to glean from your letter that you are not inclined to respond to my request (concerning Möller’s edition, 'Ungarische Volkslieder'). Because of this I am forced to attempt to realize the corrections I would like by resorting to other means."Annotations by the recipient in blue and green pencil. Slightly worn; creased at folds; small burnhole and trace of rusty paper clip to left margin; small edge tears.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Volume V, 1922-1939, inscribed by the author to "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly and also with the author's autograph presentation letter to Kelly

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This British first edition of the fifth volume of ChurchillÂ’s Official Biography is an important association copy, inscribed by the author to “indefatigable Churchill literary assistant” Denis Kelly. The six-line inscription inked in black on the front free endpaper reads: “To D.K. - | with the authorÂ’s warmest regards | as always | M.G. | London | 6th March 1986”. Laid in is an autograph presentation note from Gilbert in five lines reading: “7th March 1986 | Dear D.K. (of my Daily volume 8 work!) | Here is volume 5. It comes with | warmest regards, as always | Martin”. The autograph presentation note is on personal stationery with printed address and telephone number. The “volume 8” reference refers to the eighth and final main text volume of the Official Biography, then being prepared by the author, which extensively references Denis Kelly. Denis Kelly (1916-1990) served during the Second World War first in the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry and then in the Indian Mountain Artillery in India and Burma (1941-45). Though he was called to the bar in 1942, after the war Kelly joined ChurchillÂ’s literary team, first as an archivist, then as a literary assistant on ChurchillÂ’s war memoirs. On 14 May 1947, Churchill met the young barrister at Chartwell. Showing Kelly a cellar “stacked from floor to ceiling” Churchill tasked him thus: “Your task, my boy, is to make Cosmos out of Chaos.” Kelly approached the task with not only diligence and competence, but no small reverence: “I realised that I was handling the personal papers of a man who had experienced and shaped the history of the world in the last fifty years…” (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.331.) Ultimately, KellyÂ’s assistance went far beyond organization of ChurchillÂ’s papers. Kelly became a vital part of ChurchillÂ’s literary team for the rest of ChurchillÂ’s productive life as an author, not only assisting with The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, but also preparing the abridged, one-volume Memoirs of the Second World War (published 1959). ChurchillÂ’s 10,000 word epilogue to KellyÂ’s abridgement proved his last original writing for a book publication. KellyÂ’s papers, including correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, now reside in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by his son Randolph Churchill (1911-1968) but completed by Martin Gilbert (1936-2015), is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. British first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This fifth volume covers the years 1922 to 1939, from the time when Churchill left the Liberal Party, rejoined the Tories, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer to the "wilderness years" of the 1930s when he was out of power and out of favor, persistently seeking to draw attention, resources and resolve to face the growing Nazi threat. This inscribed association copy is in very good condition in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note minor shelf wear and a neat, .25 inch closed tear at the spine head. The contents remain bright with no ownership marks other than the authorÂ’s inscription. Light spotting is confined to the top and fore edges and the red-stained top edge is sunned, retaining only a hint of pink color. The editionÂ’s brown dust jacket proved highly susceptible to sunning. This dust jacket shows minor toning to the spine and the upper edge of the front face and light wear to extremities. The lower front flap of the first edition dust jacket originally featured two prices, an introductory price “until February 28th, 1977” with a higher price above. The introductory price is neatly clipped from this jacket, leaving the higher price intact above. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. From the publisher: "In an environment dominated by menacing speed, instability, advertising and television, the American monument plays a meditative role. A grace of intention shines through the oft times awkward alliance of efforts that produced them. They are redeemed by the confidence they express in the worth of the act memorialized. In this album the viewer and the viewed hold each other in balance. A world buried alive in our midst is unearthed to us. The photographer has brought it to us to see." Signed by the Artist.         THE RED BOOKS OF HUMPHRY REPTON Antony House, Attingham Park, Sherringham Hall and Explanatory Volume by Edward Malins.

The Basilisk Press 1976 - Limited facsimile edition. No. 465 of 515 (of which 500 were for sale). Four volumes. Three volumes oblong 4to, one volume folio. Quarter red morocco over red marbled boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. Printed on mould made rag wove paper. Each volume housed in separate slipcases and all volumes housed together in an encompassing slipcase with compartments, silver basilisk printed on the front. A near fine set, slightest of fading to the spines and a little staining to the spines and front of the main slipcase. The three volumes of Repton's landscapes are illustrated throughout in colour, including views, maps and landscape designs, many with Repton's trademark overlays. Malins's Explanatory Volume illustrated with black and white photographs. Humphry Repton, often regarded as the successor to Capability Brown, was one of the great landscape designers of the 18th century, and he worked for some of the most important noble families of his time. He provided his clients with his designs in "Red Books" (so called for the red morocco bindings he produced them in) which included explanatory text and watercolours, many with hinged or sliding overlays to show before and after views of the same scene. The Red Books were not published, they were elegant notebooks containing handwritten proposals for each commission he took on. In 1976 The Basilisk Press produced a high quality facsimile edition of 3 of the books, paying particular attention to ensuring a consistent colour reproduction for each image and its overlay. The result is a beautiful example of the work of one of Britain's leading landscape designers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?

New York: McGraw-Hill. (1976). First. Uncorrected proof. Golden yellow wrappers with publisher's label affixed as issued. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. Publisher's promotional release in a pocket in the case. Modest age-toning on the wrappers, near fine. Inscribed by Carver to John Barth: "For Jack Barth with good wishes & dazzling admiration. Ray Carver. Baltimore. Nov. 17, 1982." Laid into the proof is a letter from Carver's editor Gordon Lish to Barth prior to publication, stressing the deeply flawed text of the proof: "VERY rough first proofs, chuggyjam with errors of transcription." He mightily promotes the book and solicits a blurb: "So if you feel yourself at all inclined to say something, for God's sake do it... ." Barth would ultimately describe Carver's style as "Post-Alcoholic Blue-Collar Minimalist Hyperrealism," and who could argue with that? The author's first major collection of stories, and his first book issued by a regular commercial publisher. An incomparable association of possibly the most important and influential American short story collection of the 1970s -- Carver's spare prose and realistic settings reinvigorated American fiction. .
