        The Old Rectory.

      London: Warren Editions, pamphlet printed at the Compton Press, Tisbury, 1976. One of 150 sets of proofs hand printed by the artist. With the accompanying pamphlet 'Litton Cheney 1877'. 17 wood engravings and a wood engraved title-page and colophon by Reynolds Stone. One of 150 sets of prints (this no.103), printed by the artist on an 1853 Hopkinson & Cope Albion at the Litton Cheney Press. Each print and the title-page and colophon are individually mounted, the engravings are numbered and signed in pencil, all housed in the original green cloth box with Reynolds Stone designed floral paper lining, gilt lettering on spine and upper cover. The spine of the bos is faded with a little rubbing, everything else in extremely good condition. Classic Reynolds Stone with his eye for detail, total mastery of his medium and his ability to convey the glories of the English countryside as noone else could. The engravings are all of the artist's house, garden and wooded environs. With the little pamphlet bound in Reynolds Stone designed paper containing a poem "Litton Cheney, 1877" and an introduction about his house by Stone. "The house was discovered accidentally, in 1952. It was hidden by trees....We were on our way home...and stopped to look at the church; and below lay the rectory, empty. The garden and the stream bowled us over....In sorting books and papers I discovered my grandfather, ED Stone..had forestalled us. He had taken the living for the summer holidays of 1877. Letters from the Rector...survive; even a poem, describing the church and the garden and stream, turned into Latin verse by EDS" (Stone's grandfather). The pamphlet was printed at the Compton Press Tisbury in an edition of 500, the first 150 being for purchasers of the box of engravings.

        The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill in four volumes

      London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This is a full, four volume set of the first and only edition of ChurchillÂ’s Collected Essays. In 1976, the Library of Imperial History issued this set as a welcome follow-up to the Collected Works, which included only book-length publications. Both the content and aesthetics of this four-volume set are compelling, compiling most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, gilt top edge, and head and foot bands. There were two standard binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous. The one offered here (the "Centenary Edition") is quarter blue morocco over blue cloth as opposed to the white vellum in which full sets of the Collected Works were typically bound. As a stand-alone set, the quarter blue morocco binding may be preferred. The binding is both more attractive and more durable than the white vellum, which can age poorly. In either binding, sets of the Collected Essays are desirable, both for content and shelf-presence. This set is in near fine condition, not pristine, but very clean with only a few trivial blemishes. The bindings remain square, clean, and tight with sharp corners with no discernible wear apart from a faint one inch diagonal scratch on the lower Volume IV spine. The contents are bright and clean, with no previous ownership marks or spotting. The gilt top edges remain clean and bright, as do the fore and bottom edges, with the minor exception of a trivial hint of staining to the Volume IV bottom edge. Although not named, this book was inscribed to Koestler's friend, British bibliophile, scholar and auctioneer Anthony Hobson. With Hobson's bookplate on the inside front cover. Includes a chapter by Arthur Koestler entitled "Whereof one cannot speak...?" and other contributions by Arnold Toynbee, Cottie A. Burland, Adrian Boshier, Crispin Tickell, Geoffrey Parrinder, Rosalind Heywood and others. Given Koestler's death by suicide in 1983 and his support for the cause of voluntary euthanasia, the subject matter of the book and its inscription render this a particular significant copy. Laid- in are 6 equally intriguing pieces of Koestler-related ephemera: a) The Royal Academy of Arts 'A Meeting to Honour the Memory of Arthur Koestler and Cynthia Koestler Thursday 7 April, 1983' memorial service booklet (with an intact copy of Koestler's suicide letter laid-in the booklet); b) Invitation to Koestler's memorial service. [Although not marked as such, both the invitation and the Memorial Service booklet belonged to Koestler's friend Anthony Hobson; c) Koestler's original obituary in The Times March 4, 1983; d) Two articles on Koestler in The Times accompanying the obituary; e) Original Sunday Times October 23 1976 review of this book. An important book with a significant essay by Arthur Koestler; a significant inscription to a close friend of his and important ephemera.         Helen Josephine

      W.R. Royle and Son Ltd., London 1976 - The Helen Josephine is crimson scarlet with a bright clear white base. The petals curl inwards at first, but will open in hot sunshine. Rory McEwen (1932 - 1982) was an artist and musician born in Scotland. He studied at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge and later settled in London. He began painting flowers when he was eight. He went on to become a musician and performer and a regular on the BBC's 'Tonight' eventually hosing 'Hallabaloo', a folk, blues and alternative music show. From 1964, McEwen shifted focus on his visual art career, developing his distinctive style. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in several museum collections, including the Tate in London. These wonderful Old English Tulip lithographs are rendered with scientific detail combined with a contemporary lightness and flair. Botanical. Color offset lithograph. Page measures 23" x 20". Signature in pencil in the lower right corner, numbered 32/500.

The style of the poster follows that of the one sheet, but with different dimensions for subway display. Bowie would appropriate the same iconic image for his 1977 album, "Low." One of the most important science fiction films of the 1970s. In his review for the New York Times, Richard Eder wrote: "When science fiction writing enlisted such authors as Ray Bradbury, the emphasis on space machines, time warps and little green men gave way to more philososhical and emotional approaches. It was man or Martian, not as physical but as metaphysical travelers. Space was filled with loss and melancholy as well as gadgets." Nicholas Roeg abandoned none of his avant-garde leanings for the film, but instead brought an experimental, impressionistic style to a larger audience by way of David Bowie, who lent his other-worldly persona to a literally other-worldly character. 29.5 x 43 inches, rolled, on archival linen.         La Mama ETC Poster Archive, 1975-1976

      New York: La Mama ETC., 1976. Archive of four posters from productions hosted by La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, including "Fragments of a Trilogy" (Andrei Serban & Elizabeth Swados, 1975), "A Rat's Mass" (Adrienne Kennedy & Cecil Taylor, 1976), "Anaïs" (Tom O'Horgan, 1976), and "Quarry" (Meredith Monk, 1976). Founded in 1961 by African-American "Off-Off Broadway" pioneer Ellen Stewart, La Mama ETC became home for the underfunded and the underrepresented, giving theatre innovators, such as Sam Shepard, Philip Glass, and Tom O'Horgan, a space to develop their art. Stewart offered her space to numerous artists at different stages in their career, and La Mama ETC became the epicenter of creative culture from widely varied backgrounds. Represented are performances by legends and unknowns working together while promoted by Stewart and her company during the furiously productive 1975 and 1976 seasons. "Fragments of a Trilogy" paired Romanian immigrant Andrei Serban with composer Elizabeth Swados. Black Art Movement member Adrienne Kennedy's drama "A Rat's Mass" was staged by jazz musician Cecil Taylor. Composer Meredith Monk utilized the La Mama Annex space for her opera "Quarry." After productions of "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar," Tom O'Horgan returned to the La Mama stage for "Anaïs: A Dance of Words Based on the Diaries of Anaïs Nin" conceived with Judson Dance Theater performer Victor Lipari. 14 x 22 inches to 22 x 32 inches, Very Good to Near Fine and rolled except "Quarry," which is folded with toned edges, minor soiling, and a small repaired tear at the verso.

      New York: Wayne County Defense Fund, 1976. Original poster advertising "The Fantabulous New York Rock Party" at the Manhattan Center in New York, May 30, 1976. An ironic moment in New York punk and art scene history, some of the earliest evidence that the movement created to mock celebrity status was beginning to see itself in terms of celebrity. Also interesting here is evidence of early sub-divisions of punk mainstays (e.g., Dee Dee Ramone of the Ramones, Jerry Nolan, Walter Lure, and Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls), the presence of by-then-established Factory luminaries of the late 1960s (Holly Woodlawn), professional groupies (Sable Starr), and trans-gender representatives (Divine and the cast of "Women Behind Bars," Wayne County and the Back Street Boys). Mention is also made of door prizes consisting of memorabilia signed by a number of punk antecedents, including David Bowie, Aerosmith, and Kiss. A benefit organized to benefit the Wayne County's Defense Fund, and we're not talking about Wayne County, Michigan, but an inter-punk legal situation. At a performance in March 1976 at a Wayne County performance at CBGBs, "Handsome Dick" Manatoba of the Dictators was throwing homophobic taunts at trans-gender punkster Wayne County and County responded in kind by hitting Manitoba with a mike stand and breaking his collar bone. The case was eventually thrown out of court, and the rift between the New York punk scene and the Dictators became a chasm. 17.5 x 22 inches, rolled.         Fellini's Casanova (Original oversize double weight photograph from the 1976 film)

      Rome: Produzioni Europee Associati (PEA), 1976. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Donald Sutherland and Cicely Browne getting it on in high style in the 1976 film. Cattarinich did still photography work for many interesting and prominent directors in the 1970s and 1980s, including Pedro Almodovar, Joe D'Amato, Marco Ferreri, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, among others. Producer Dino De Laurentiis saw Robert Redford in the role of Casanova but Fellini refused to cast him. When De Laurentiis bowed out of the project and Fellini signed a new contract with producer Alberto Grimaldi, Sutherland was cast in the role, requiring that he shave his head and wear both prosthetic nose and chin. Fellini had to re-shoot parts of this movie, including the elaborate Venice carnival scene, when approximately seventy reels of film-including the first three weeks of shooting-were stolen at the Technicolor labs of Tiburtino, Rome, on August 27, 1975. Also stolen were portions of Pasolini's "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom" and Damiano Damiani's spaghetti Western, "A Genius, Two Partners, and a Dupe." 11.5 x 7.75 inches. Fine.

      McGraw-Hill, New York 1976 - Uncorrected proof. Golden yellow wrappers with publisher's label affixed as issued. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. Publisher's promotional release in a pocket in the case. Modest age-toning on the wrappers, near fine. Inscribed by Carver to John Barth: "For Jack Barth with good wishes & dazzling admiration. Ray Carver. Baltimore. Nov. 17, 1982." Laid into the proof is a letter from Carver's editor Gordon Lish to Barth prior to publication, stressing the deeply flawed text of the proof: "VERY rough first proofs, chuggyjam with errors of transcription." He mightily promotes the book and solicits a blurb: "So if you feel yourself at all inclined to say something, for God's sake do it. ." Barth would ultimately describe Carver's style as "Post-Alcoholic Blue-Collar Minimalist Hyperrealism," and who could argue with that?The author's first major collection of stories, and his first book issued by a regular commercial publisher. An incomparable association of possibly the most important and influential American short story collection of the 1970s -- Carver's spare prose and realistic settings reinvigorated American fiction. Nach einer Ausbildung zum Schriftenmaler und Grafiker bei Orell Füssli in Zürich entschloss sich Oskar Dalvit 1936 für die freischaffende Tätigkeit als Maler. Über die Vermittlung von Maria Marc (Witwe von Franz Marc) lernte er den Kunsthändler Karl Nierendorf kennen. der sein Werk 1947 unter Vertrag nahm. Eine Ausstellung in New York war bereits in Vorbereitung. als der Kunsthändler an einem Herzversagen starb. Dank der Vermittlung Nierendorfs öffneten sich Dalvit in den 50er Jahren viele Galerien und Museen. 1951 vertrat er die Schweiz an der Bienal de São Paulo. Brasilien. Durch die Freundschaft mit dem deutschen Maler Fritz Winter wurde er mit der Gruppe Zen 49 bekannt. deren Mitglieder wie Dalvit in der Münchner Galerie Otto Stangl ausstellten. Ab den 40er Jahren arbeitete er während der Sommermonate auch in Amden. wo bereits Otto Meyer-Amden - Dalvits wichtigstes Vorbild - entscheidende Schaffensjahre verbracht hatte. 1975 starb Dalvit unerwartet an einem Herzversagen. Werkwürdigung: Nach einem gezeichneten Frühwerk. in dem er Einflüsse Hans von Marées` und Otto Meyer-Amdens verarbeitet hatte. stellte sich Dalvit mit diesen Ölgemälden. die in starken. pastos aufgetragenen Farben gehalten sind. als Expressionist vor. Ernst Ludwig Kirchners in der Schweiz entstandenes Werk diente ihm als Anregung. Über die Beschäftigung mit Paul Klee und Wassily Kandinsky fand Dalvit dann in den 40er Jahren zu einer ungegenständlichen Gestaltungsweise. Der Weg zur Abstraktion bedeutete für ihn einen Prozess der Verinnerlichung. Die Qualität der Werke sollte ähnlich wie bei den Vertretern der lyrischen Abstraktion Jean Bazaine oder Alfred Manessier in ihrer «Gestimmtheit». ihrem atmosphärischen Wert liegen und damit gleichsam ein Äquivalent zur Musik bilden. So sehr Dalvit seine Bilder aus der Farbe konstituierte. so sehr spielte auch das grafische Moment in seinem Werk eine Rolle. In den 50er Jahren wurden seine druckgrafischen Blätter bekannt. ja geradezu populär. Sie haben Dalvits Namen mehr geschadet als genützt. lenkten sie doch in ihrer oft etwas gefälligen Wirkung vom tiefen Gehalt anderer Werke ab. in denen Dalvit versuchte. philosophische. soziale und religiöse Momente ins sinnlich Wahrnehmbare zu übersetzen.
