        The Old Rectory.

Warren Editions, pamphlet printed at the Compton Press, Tisbury, London 1976 - With the accompanying pamphlet 'Litton Cheney 1877'. 17 wood engravings and a wood engraved title-page and colophon by Reynolds Stone. One of 150 sets of prints (this no.103), printed by the artist on an 1853 Hopkinson & Cope Albion at the Litton Cheney Press. Each print and the title-page and colophon are individually mounted, the engravings are numbered and signed in pencil, all housed in the original green cloth box with Reynolds Stone designed floral paper lining, gilt lettering on spine and upper cover. The spine of the bos is faded with a little rubbing, everything else in extremely good condition. Classic Reynolds Stone with his eye for detail, total mastery of his medium and his ability to convey the glories of the English countryside as noone else could. The engravings are all of the artist's house, garden and wooded environs. With the little pamphlet bound in Reynolds Stone designed paper containing a poem "Litton Cheney, 1877" and an introduction about his house by Stone. "The house was discovered accidentally, in 1952. It was hidden by trees. We were on our way home.and stopped to look at the church; and below lay the rectory, empty. The garden and the stream bowled us over.In sorting books and papers I discovered my grandfather, ED Stone.had forestalled us. He had taken the living for the summer holidays of 1877. Letters from the Rector.survive; even a poem, describing the church and the garden and stream, turned into Latin verse by EDS" (Stone's grandfather). The pamphlet was printed at the Compton Press Tisbury in an edition of 500, the first 150 being for purchasers of the box of engravings. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Interview With the Vampire.

Alfred A. Knopf,, New York: 1976 - Publishers cloth, gilt title to spine, fine condition. Gold foil dust jacket, minor scuff and shelf wear, top corner inside flap, with small flat crease, overall near fine. Signed by author on first blank. A rare example of a near fine signed copy of the first edition. Most copies in poor condition due to the easily faulted gold foil jacket. An excellent copy at a most affordable price. In protective mylar. The authors first book and the first book of the Vampire Chronicles. The release of Interview With The Vampire in 1976 changed the genre of vampire fiction forever. Rather than monsters of evil, she created individual personalities with morals and sensitivity, all the while still killers with a thirst for blood. Rice revised and created entirely new generations of gothic romance, which are still strong today in literature and film. Citations: Barron: Horror Literature 4-250.         William Eggleston’s Guide

New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1976 - 8vo (228 × 228 mm), pp.112. 48 colour photographs and 1 black-and-white portrait of Eggleston. Essay by John Szarkowski. Black endpapers. Black leatherette-covered boards, spine and upper side lettered in gilt, colour photographic reproduction affixed to a debossed panel on front; foxing to page edges. Foot of spine slightly skewed. Near-fine. First edition. The adoption of colour photography, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, by William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and others was not without precedent. Nonetheless, perhaps because of its commercial associations, colour photography had been slow to find acceptance in the art world. Eggleston’s solo exhibition in 1976 had the distinction of being the first exhibition of colour photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. As such, it and this catalogue which accompanied it are often credited with legitimatising colour photography for the serious American museum-attending audience. Szarkowski noted Eggleston’s ‘ability to monumentalize the minutiae of mundane life’ and boldly declared that ‘as pictures, these seem to me to be perfect.’ To which New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer responded, ‘Perfect? Perfectly banal, perhaps. Perfectly boring, certainly.’ Regards sur un siècle de photographie à travers le livre, (152); The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century pp.234-5; The Photobook: A History Vol.II p.265; The Open Book pp.308-9; 802 photo books from the Auer collection p.598.         THE BLUE HAMMER (Author's Proof Copy, Annotated)

Alfred A . Knopf, New York 1976 - Octavo. Uncorrected proof copy in printed yellow wrappers. The author's own copy with more than 60 holograph corrections to the text, in pencil. Page references for all of these corrections are given in pencil on the front cover by Macdonald. Laid in are two pages of typed corrections (signed "B") to text with quirky little remarks to Macdonald prepared by fellow mystery writer, William Campbell Gault, who is the dedicatee of the book and here a proof reader. Gault refers to page 30, paragraph 279: "If you mean Jack Daniel's as a good Tennessee whisky, and that's the famous one, it is not a bourbon (have a letter from the vice-prez of Jack Daniel's explaining why). This is the only place you refer to it as a bourbon. (This is known as carping)." And the final two paragraphs by Gault: "And so it ends, very good book. Hard to proof read as I got too involved in the story. Very good book. And now, on the manufacturing end, this is a clever suggestion: You insist they put an energy cell in the spine of the book, energising (energizing?) both a small bulb and a miniature recording. As the reader turns to the dedication page, the light will illuminate the page (a pale blue light) and a dim and distant trumpet flare will sound as the reader views my name. Remember now, a trumpet flare -ta-Ra, ta-Ra. Be sure it is not taps." The present copy shows an excellent example of two exceptional writers collaborating on the final touches of a successful and popular novel. A fine copy housed in a custom leather backed clamshell box. NOTE: William Campbell Gault is author of Don't Cry For Me (Edgar Award winner), End of a Call Girl, Dead Hero and many others.         Autograph musical manuscripts signed "G. Menotti" of two solo songs from the composer's cantata Landscapes and Remembrances. [Piano-vocal score]. Ca. 1976

Landscapes and Remembrances, a cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra to texts by Menotti, was first performed at Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee on May 14, 1976, with Judith Blegen (soprano), Ani Yervanian (contralto), Vahan Khanzadian (tenor), Gary Kendall (baritone), and the Milwaukee Symphony and Bel Canto Chorus, James Keeley, conducting. "The nine-part Landscapes and Remembrances is a set of musical impressions drawn from the composer's life, ranging from his arrival in America as a teenager to his discovery of South Carolina, where he founded the Spoleto USA Festival in 1977... The structure of Landscapes consists of alternating choruses and orchestral songs, although several of the choral sections make use of solo voices as well. The titles in general reflect the geography of remembrance at the root of each... " "The Abandoned Mansion," the first song in Landscapes, is "a brooding piece in E-flat minor... infused with the past. Its constantly arcing melodic lines are supported by persistent tremolo figures that give way only briefly in the middle of the song to sustained chords--a section of quasi-recitative. The key to the song lies in these words: 'A visitor to the South is an intruder into the reigns of ghosts'." "Farewell at a Train Station in Vermont," the final song, is "concerned with love, but this time with the bitterness of parting. 'In everyone's life', Menotti has commented, 'there is a farewell never forgotten, the pain of which never heals', a sentiment he had previously expressed in his libretto for Barber's opera Vanessa. It is evident that this section of Landscapes is... rooted in actuality... Over a solemn adagio figure, the solo voice sets the stage for this short scena: 'The train is late. It rains as it must when lovers part forever. Without a word we pace the empty platform, measuring our protracted agony with uncharted steps'." John Ardoin: The Stages of Menotti, pp. 129-131. Menotti's autograph musical manuscripts are very rare to the market.. Folio (ca. 313 x 237 mm). Unbound. "The abandoned mansion (South Carolina) for contralto." 1f. (title), 5, [i] (blank) pp. "Farewell at a train station in Vermont (for tenor)." 8 pp. Notated in pencil on 12-stave printed music paper with "G Schirmer Royal Brand No. 54... " printed at lower margin. Small check mark in blue pencil to upper corner of each page of "The abandoned mansion." First measure of "Farewell" with a bass drum cue. Minor erasures throughout. Slightly worn; small rust stains from a paper clip to upper margin of outer pages, slightly affecting one letter of a tempo marking.

Autograph musical manuscripts signed "G. Menotti" of two solo songs from the composer's cantata Landscapes and Remembrances. [Piano-vocal score]. Ca. 1976.

      - Landscapes and Remembrances, a cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra to texts by Menotti, was first performed at Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee on May 14, 1976, with Judith Blegen (soprano), Ani Yervanian (contralto), Vahan Khanzadian (tenor), Gary Kendall (baritone), and the Milwaukee Symphony and Bel Canto Chorus, James Keeley, conducting."The nine-part Landscapes and Remembrances is a set of musical impressions drawn from the composer's life, ranging from his arrival in America as a teenager to his discovery of South Carolina, where he founded the Spoleto USA Festival in 1977. The structure of Landscapes consists of alternating choruses and orchestral songs, although several of the choral sections make use of solo voices as well. The titles in general reflect the geography of remembrance at the root of each. "The Abandoned Mansion," the first song in Landscapes, is "a brooding piece in E-flat minor. infused with the past. Its constantly arcing melodic lines are supported by persistent tremolo figures that give way only briefly in the middle of the song to sustained chords--a section of quasi-recitative. The key to the song lies in these words: 'A visitor to the South is an intruder into the reigns of ghosts'."Farewell at a Train Station in Vermont," the final song, is "concerned with love, but this time with the bitterness of parting. 'In everyone's life', Menotti has commented, 'there is a farewell never forgotten, the pain of which never heals', a sentiment he had previously expressed in his libretto for Barber's opera Vanessa. It is evident that this section of Landscapes is. rooted in actuality. 129- 131.Menotti's autograph musical manuscripts are very rare to the market. 54.         Gesammelte Werke Band 1 / Collected Works Volume 1 (Inscribed) 2 Bilderbucher / 2 Picture Books (Inscribed Copy)

Stuttgart, London and Reykjavik: Edition Hansjorg Mayer, 1976. First edition. Spiral_bound. Very Good. Volume 1 of the collected artist books of Dieter Roth. Decorated clamshell cardboard box containing two distinct "children's books" and a separate one page sheet with title and printing information. From an edition of one thousand copies. The first book is entitled Kinderbuch and consists of 28 pp of color screenprints and die-cuts. Fine condition in plastic spiral binding. The second book, Bilderbuch, is 23 pp, housed in a two-ring binder and contains color acetate and white paper, die cut. A near fine copy. The box itself shows some heavy wear with splits at corners and some creases as if a weight was placed on it at some point. This copy benefits, however, from the fact that it has been INSCRIBED by Roth to fellow RISD artist/photographer Mary Kocol. The inscription is dated May 1986 in Providence which was the time and place of a Dieter Roth retrospective exhibit at The Rhode Island School of Design. Dieter spent a year at RISD in the mid-1960's as a visiting artist. Although he signed many books in his lifetime, books inscribed by Dieter are not common, and copies inscribed to fellow artists are even more desirable. Listed in Aaron's and Roth's In Numbers - Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955.

BNF. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Last Waltz (Original poster for the 1976 performance)

San Francisco: Bill Graham Productions, 1976. Original poster advertising the final performance by The Band at Bill Graham's Winterland in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. Not to be confused with the resulting film of the same name directed by Martin Scorsese. By the mid-1970s, after a furious number of performances with The Band, Robbie Robertson had become road-shy and wanted to cap the great quintet's career with a grand finale in the place where they had begun. What began as a simple idea turned into a complex and expensive venture, as well as something of an interpersonal emotional tempest. But the performance, and the film that came from it, ironically immortalized The Band in ways that no one--probably not even Scorsese--ever expected. Poster designed by Bob Cato and Michael Manoogian, using elements from the work French surrealist Georges Hugnet. 20.5 x 28.5 inches. Rolled, on archival linen. Fine.
