        Missa Privata Typescript

UK: A PBB Production. A PBB Production, n.d. [c1976]. Original Typescript. 33 sheets, single-sided [30 sheets encompass the story, the others are titles etc., c10,000 words, large post quarto paper size]. Only a few corrections, being Roberts' name added to the title, and a handful of small tipped corrections. It is feasible (though we speculate) that it was Roberts who typed this, given that it appears to have been produced under some production company of his own (he was known to be a bit of a bugger when it came to his professional colleagues, we can't find any evidence of PBB Productions, and none of his contemporaries we know seem to recall, which suggests to us that perhaps he was trying it out on his own somewhat). Evidence of staple removal, original paper folder almost entirely split along fold. It must be noted though that, given the provenance, we can't be certain that it is Roberts' original typescript. Though the paper size dates it somewhat. n.d. [c1976] . Near Fine. Unbound. 1976.

SNIFFIN GLUE and Other Rock ‘n’ Roll Habits for Punks! Issue 2

London: Mark Perry. August 1976 - First edition of issue two if this influential Punk magazine. Quarto. 8 Mimeograph stapled pages, as issued. A very good copy, with light spotting, creasing and handling marks to the extremities. An excellent example of this rare early issue. Provenance: From the personal collection of Roger Towndrow, guitarist of the punk band ‘Nipple Erectors’ (later the Nips with Shane McGowan and Shanne Bradley). With a signed letter from Roger detailing the provenance. NME acclaimed "Sniffin' Glue" as "the nastiest, healthiest and funniest piece of press in the history of rock'n'roll habits" and it became the true chronicle of the early days of British punk rock as well as pioneering the DIY punk ethic. Fearing absorption into the mainstream music press, Perry ceased publication in 1977 with issue 12. The early and half issues had a small print run and are rare. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        The American Monument.

New York: The Eakins Press Foundation, 1976. First edition, one of only 2000 copies, with 213 photogravure plates. Oblong folio, original blue-gray cloth. In fine condition. Signed by Lee Friedlander. With more than 200 photographs scrupulously produced and bound ledger-style, The American Monument is a humorous, lyrical, and excessive expression of a country's obsession with immortalizing itself. Leslie Katz writes: "This photographer in these photographs affirms the residual order in the crazy scene. He understands and brings us human civilization, embattled but intact in the various wilds of American enterprise, whether downtown, in suburbia, or on the roof." "Twelve years in the making, The American Monument is almost maniacally inclusive, rounding up everything from Plymouth Rock to a plaque commemorating the Pony Express in Salt Lake City and treating them all with the same deliberate nonchalance. The doggedness of Friedlander's quest is at once astounding and hilarious... Friedlander's memorials, no matter how solidly anchored, seem adrift, lost in the landscape, unnoticed if not forgotten... Tidy arrangements of two, three and four pictures multiply obsessively as the book's momentum builds; towards the end, there are accumulations of six and nine photos to a page. The result is overwhelming, as it clearly was intended to be. History stalks the landscape at every turn" (Roth 101,236). Open Book 310.

        Tau/Ma. Vol. 1 (1976) through Vol. 7 (1981) (all published)

A complete run in 7 volumes of the irregularly published contemporary art and literature journal, under the editorial direction of Mario Diacono in New York and Claudio Parmiggiani in Bologna, the volumes consisting of portfolios each containing several different booklets from a range of international writers and artists, with contributors including Gian Pio Torricelli, Vito Acconci, Luigi Ballerini, Jirí Kolár, Haroldo de Campos, Regina Silveira, Joan Jonas, Emilio Prini, Aleksej Krucenych, Jochen Gerz, Agnes Denes, Madeline Gins, Luciano Bartolini, Carlo Severi, El Lissitzky, Mimmo Paladino, Emilio Villa, and many others. Profusely illustrated. 4to. Orig. wrpps., housed in original cardboard portfolio boxes. Some tears and collapsing to portfolios, especially at corners. Reggio Emilia (A. Maramotti) 1976-1981. Limited edition. A pamphlet included with Volume 1 of Tau/Ma outlines the publication by saying that in each volume are collected a series of original works which allude to the book but transcend the idea of the book in its usual sense. Many works have in common a tension regarding the "display" of speech, and the authors are in general artists or visual writers. The pamphlet goes on to refer to the individual works as artists' books, including documentations of a performance or an installation, original visual written works, verbal poetry, typography, and imagery. As of September 2016, WorldCat locates six holdings in North America, plus a few scattered holdings of single volumes.

        PACIFIC OVERTURES (Bound Presentation Score)

Bound in green cloth (slightly abraded on the back cover), front and spine with "Pacific Overtures" lettered in gilt, this magnificent folio (15" by 12" by 1 ¼") is a warmly inscribed gift to Thomas Z. Shepard, Producer of the RCA Broadway cast soundtrack of PACIFIC OVERTURES (and a winner of 12 Grammy Awards for his various Broadway cast recordings, including several by Sondheim) from the Music Preparation team of Mathilde Pincus and Al Miller. Pincus and Miller prepared this Pacific Overtures score for the Conductor and the Orchestra Musicians via transcribing it into individual parts, with all the music as played originally in the Broadway Production, complete with all significant instrumental cues. Near Fine condition with great eye appeal. Laid in is a copy of a photograph of the recording session featuring the team of Thomas Z. Shepard, Stephen Sondheim, Music Director Paul Gemignani, Kenneth Glancy (RCA company president) and Hal Prince. Mr. Shepard has hand-written their names on the back of the photocopy along with a sentiment ("the sessions were joyous") re: their collaboration. This folio is inscribed on the ffep: "Dear Tom: To our dear, dear friend. We hope the next book we present will be your very own opera. Love Mathilde and Al, May 27th, 1977." Thomas Z. Shepard's archive is already residing at Yale University; it contains virtually every item related to his prolific career so this is a rare escapee. A scarce item for the Broadway/Sondheim collector. Quarto. 8 Mimeograph stapled pages, as issued. A very good copy, with light spotting, creasing and handling marks to the extremities. An excellent example of this rare early issue. Provenance: From the personal collection of Roger Towndrow, guitarist of the punk band ?Nipple Erectors? (later the Nips with Shane McGowan and Shanne Bradley).

        Street Merchants in Saint Petersburg].

Maison de l'Eglise St. Pierre St. Petersburg third quarter of the 19th c. - Collection of 22 (possibly out of 24) hand-coloured lithographs, printed on thick paper, captioned in Russian and French. Dimensions: 12 x 8.8 cm. Scarce set of charming hand-coloured lithographs showing various street merchants rarely included in other similar works. Our set has a number of dissimilarities compared with the one in the collection of Gubar and in the depositories of Harvard University library: lithographed cards from our collection are unnumbered and have coloured backgrounds; some figures and captions have minor discrepancies, others feature different street merchants, not present in the Gubar's and Harvard's sets. Rare: not in the usual bibliographies, in particular not in Hilers' compilation nor Thieme-Becker, and apparently no copy in the UK, the Library of Congress and the NYPL. Cf. Dar Gubara, Sobranie, 3037-347 (vol I) & p. 193 (vol II); Ot azbuki Ivana Fedorova do sovremennogo bukvaria (Moskva, 1976), p.88.

        THE MEANING OF FREEDOM

West Point, N. Y. : United States Military Academy, 1976. 1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 8 pages ; 23 cm. In English. From the 3rd Annual Sol Feinstone Memorial Lecture series at West Point. This lecture given by Pulitzer Prize winning Jewish novelist and writer Herman Wouk. Wouk served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater of WWII. He addresses the west point graduates about The Meaning of Freedom, concluding, ?In the last five years, working on ?The Winds of War?? I?ve spoken three times: to the Naval Academy, to the Naval War caollege, and now to the United States Military Academy. It isn?t because I?m a militarist. I?m not intrigued? by the romance of war. Let me make this plain to you. In my view war is a massive criminal absurdity? I believe, heart and soul, that in days to come it will fade from the minds of men and nations as a possible way to behave. That is what I?m trying to say in my books. ? This cannot have been well-received at West Point, and certainly would not have been a speech it would have wanted to promote or make readily available outside the academy. OCLC lists only one copy worldwide (Westpoint! ) Ex-library with Jewish institutional stamp and usual markings. In very good condition. Rare. (SPEC-42-20)
