        My Life.

New York: G.P. Putnam & Sons, 1975. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Golda Meir on the front free endpaper, "In real deep friendship, and love Golda." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Laid in is a program from the Beverly Hilton Hotel "Dinner with Golda", from December 14, 1975, where the book was signed for a supporter. Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. Israel's first and the world's third woman to hold such an office, she was described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet became associated with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government"; she was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people." My Life is "both frank and very revealing of her personality and goals. Her total lack of pretense is especially winning. Meir's practical idealism can be seen in efforts as diverse as the beautification of kibbutzim and her strong advocacy of unemployment benefits. The work that 'most concerned and interested me,' she writes, was 'the translation of socialist principles into the down-to-earth terminology of everyday life.' Although the political events narrated are well known they are recounted with drama and spirit. Don't mistake this for just chicken soup with riposte-noodles: it's a model of its kind and a sure crowd-pleaser" (Kirkus Reviews).

        (Evolutionary Chess Set)

1975. Folk art chess set and table. This non-traditional chess set is based on the theory of evolution, with dinosaurs facing off against mammals. The field is alternating squares of brown earth and green & blue ponds. The pawns on each side grow through the early evolutionary stages: the dinosaurs starts as a simple DNA double helix, which progresses through aquatic creatures and early amphibians; the mammalian side begins with a small, rat-like creature that ultimately evolves into early man. The larger pieces are in pairs, though each member of the pair is posed differently so that the set comprises sixteen unique pieces. The dinosaurs are represented by stegosaurs, pterodactyls, and something similar to an iguanodon. The king and queen are, appropriately, a pair of tyrannosaurus rex; the queen wears a pretty necklace of shark teeth. Opposite are rhinoceroses, saber-tooth tigers, mammoths, and a pair of modern humans as king and queen. The queen is a smartly dressed woman from Tokyo, and the king is a farmer named Butch, who bears an unfortunate resemblance to his pre-historic cousin in the row of pawns. The entire piece is a free-standing table, with the board resting on four legs. Around the edges of the board, a continuous landscape shows the gradual progression of life from the chaotic cosmos through to the modern day. The four legs of the table are painted in similar scenes, with one leg each for early aquatic life, dinosaurs, early mammals, and modern day. The Tokyo theme may point to a date of creation in the range of 1965-1975, the height of the Japanese Kaiju monster films craze. Pre-historic creatures, though magnified to a gargantuan scale, were common in these monster films, and their size was often the result of science gone wrong. The top of the chessboard measures 33 inches square, the base 36 inches square, and it stands 34 inches tall, not including pieces. A fascinating, unique piece.

Alex Haley has heavily annotated in his own hand in green felt-tip marker. The page details the changes Haley made to the conversation between Miss Malizy and the slave Kizzy, a scene which occurs when Kizzy is first separated from her parents and sold to her new owner. “HaleyÂ’s most celebrated novel, Roots, has been compared to both Moby Dick and War and Peace. The Washington Post called it the most highly acclaimed book of our timeÂ… The author immediately became a household name, as he won over 270 awards. A phenomenon of the decade, Roots mesmerized Americans and readers of literature throughout the world. No novel since the publications of Uncle TomÂ’s Cabin and Gone With the Wind captured the public interest on the subject of slavery and its ramificationsÂ… In Roots Haley successfully traced his ancestors with a birth in 1750 in Gambia, through oral history with painstaking research and thereby put into perspective the historical background of millions of other African AmericansÂ… HaleyÂ’s 12 years of work on Roots won him a special Pulitzer prize on April 18, 1977” (Blockson 3939).         Remarks for Crime Message Briefing

1975. Signed. FORD, Gerald R. Remarks for Crime Message Briefing. Washington: White House Editorial Office, 1975. Original typescript, consisting of a cover sheet and six one-sided pages. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6500.Original typewritten final version of President Ford’s opening statement for his press conference regarding the Special Message to Congress on Crime, with substantive autograph emendations incorporated into the text. Copy belonging to speechwriter Paul A. Theis.Gerald Ford served as President during one of the most volatile periods of American history. He was faced with the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the military withdrawal from Vietnam. On top of that, the nation was experiencing run-away inflation, 7.5% unemployment, a crisis in energy, and an increased rate in crime. On June 19, 1975, Ford held a press conference to announce his proposal to Congress of a “program for curbing crime and ensuring domestic tranquility.” This final version of his remarks contains substantive autograph changes by the President, especially regarding the legal rights of victims: “For too long the law has centered its attention more on the rights of the criminal than on the victim of the crime. It is high time we reversed this trend and put the highest priority on the victims and potential victims of crime.” On the question of gun control, Ford positions himself as “unalterably opposed to federal registration of guns or gun owners. I do propose that the Congress enact legislation to deal with handguns for criminal purposes. I also propose further federal restrictions on so-called Saturday night specials.” The former owner of this original typescript, speechwriter Paul Theis, came to the White House from the Republican National Congressional Committee, where he directed public relations activities. He served as Executive Editor in the White House Editorial Office from 1974 to 1976, which included heading up the White House speechwriting unit. Theis oversaw the production of about 12 major speeches per month for Ford.A bit of paper-clip rust on a few sheets. A historic presidential document in near-fine condition.

Sentences Toward Birds -- Allen Ginsberg's copy

Kensington, CA: L Publications, 1975. First edition. Loose in Folder. Fine/Envelope. 1975. 43 index cards (4x6 inches) in original envelope addressed to Allen Ginsberg at his Stuyvesant Station PO Box. Author's return address on the front of the envelope and small ink correction on the rear. Apparently Grenier and the publisher, bookseller Curtis Faville, argued over whether or not the second word in the title should be 'Toward' or 'Towards'. Reportedly, under 100 copies were ever produced, and OCLC locates only 8. Cards are Fine. Envelope with one sided torn open. This set predates Grenier's massive 'Sentences' by 3 years and many of the short poems here would end up in that collection. A rare and experimental work, connecting the LANGUAGE poets with the Beats.

1975 - depicting an Apollo Lunar module on the surface of the moon in June 1969, signed by seven of the twelve men who walked on the Moon during the Apollo Space project, NASA stamps on the verso, 10" x 8", no place, no date circa In 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, a tiny satellite which started the Space Race in earnest. John F. Kennedy announced in May 1961 that the USA should land a man on the moon in the next decade, an ambition realised in July 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins walked on the lunar surface. This is an extraordinary collection of signatures of the majority of the men who walked on the moon's surface. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Typed Letter Signed and Notes for a Scientific Theory of Theological Experiences

, 1975. 1975. A letter dated January 27, 1975 and written to Paul [presumably Paul Williams, Dick's close friend and eventual biographer] transmitting chapter one of Confessions [of a Crap Artist] (not included here) and, included here, two pages of "theological ramblings" related to Dick's "beginning to fashion a scientific theory about [his] theological experiences..." The letter covers a bit about the retrograde forces such as tachyons bleeding back at Earth due to the weakening field of time; one of the two pages of notes considers humans' (and Dick's) roles as avatars, with knowledge received from the Holy Spirit; the other page considers our inability to recognize God and postulates a "SF novel: Hefestus as VALIS" -- a very early mention of the acronym Dick developed for the "Vast Active Living Intelligence System" that he considered to be the nature of reality and the universe, after his psychological/religious epiphanies that he experienced in February and March of 1974. The theological writings are from the early pages of what came to be known as his Exegesis, which, by the time of his death in 1982, had reached over 8000 pages of religious and metaphysical insight and speculation. The letter, signed by Dick, runs about 225 words; the theological musings about 950 words. Near fine. First Edition. No Binding. Near Fine.
