Coming to England shortly after the completion of his education in the Rabbinic College at Warsaw, Ginsburg continued his study of the Hebrew Scriptures, with special attention to the Five Megillot. The first result of these studies was a translation of the Song of Songs, with a historical and critical commentary, published in 1857. A similar translation of Ecclesiastes, followed by treatises on the Karaites, the Essenes, and the Kabbalah, kept the author prominently before biblical students while he was preparing the first sections of his magnum opus, the critical study of the Massorah. Beginning in 1867 with the publication of Jacob ben Hayyim's Introduction to the Rabbinic Bible, Hebrew and English and the Massoreth HaMassoreth of Elias Levita, in Hebrew, with translation and commentary, Ginsburg became known as an eminent Hebrew scholar. In 1870 he was appointed one of the first members of the committee for the revision of the English version of the Old Testament. The work at hand is considered his life work: The publication of the Massorah, in three volumes (1880-1886), in Hebrew, followed by the one-volume English edition in 1905. Ginsburg had one predecessor in the field, the learned Jacob ben Hayyim (or: Jacob ben Chajim), who in 1524-1525 published the second Rabbinic Bible, containing what has ever since been known as the Massorah. Ginsburg took up the subject almost where it was left by those early pioneers, and collected portions of the Massorah from the countless manuscripts scattered throughout Europe and the East. Ginsburg published Facsimiles of Manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible (1897 and 1898), the Text of the Hebrew Bible in Abbreviations (1903), in addition to a critical treatise on the relationship of the so-called Codex Babylonicus of A.D. 916 to the Eastern Recension of the Hebrew Text (1899, for private circulation). In the last-mentioned work he seeks to prove that the St. Petersburg Codex, for so many years accepted as the genuine text of the Babylonian school, is in reality a Palestinian text carefully altered so as to render it conformable with Babylonian recension. He subsequently undertook the preparation of a new edition of the Hebrew Bible for the British and Foreign Bible Society. He also contributed many articles to J. Kitto's Encyclopedia, W. Smith's Dictionary of Christian Biography, and the Encyclopedia Britannica. [from Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed. (1911) Volume V12, p. 29] On the Massorah in general: "It is well known that the received text of the Hebrew Bible is called the Massoretic, i.e., printed according to the Massorah. Now, the Massorah is a marginal directory, indicating (...) how the letters, words and phrases are to be written, according to the most ancient rules laid down by those who compiled, preserved, and transmitted the canon of the Old Testament Scriptures (...). This invaluable key to the text of the old testament is called Massorah (tradition) because it was traditionally transmitted by the authorized and professional scribes, who afterwards committed it to writing" (from the introduction pasted-in to the first volume). It was primarily compiled, edited and distributed by a group of Jews known as the Masoretes between the seventh and tenth centuries CE. The oldest manuscripts containing substantial parts of the Masoretic Text known to still exist date from approximately the ninth century. The Aleppo Codex dates from the tenth century. In the first half of the tenth century Aaron ben Moses ben Asher and Moshe ben Naphtali (often just called ben Asher and ben Naphtali) were the leading Masoretes in Tiberias. Ben Asher wrote a standard codex (the Aleppo Codex) embodying his opinions. Probably Ben Naphtali did too, but it has not survived. (from the Jewish Encyclopedia, see below) On this work [from: Library of Biblical Studies, see below]: Ginsburg's work is a critical edition of the Massorah, and as such it relies heavily on the two standard works preceding it, i.e. Jacob ben Hayyim's second Blomberg edition of the Bible and Elijah Levita's Massoreth ha-Massoroth (Tiberias, 1538). Whereas Elijah Levita had a primarily grammatical approach, Jacob ben Hayyim ibn Adonijah was associated more directly with the manuscripts themselves. The sort of thing that ben Hayyim did is "what Ginsburg did in his massive collection of The Massorah in four volumes, imperial folio (1881-1905). [the work at hand]. There are no indications where any notes came from, or the date origin and history of the manuscripts. Nobody in the 16th century ever thought of doing this (...). There had to be a beginning at some time, and this beginning was made by Jacob ben (C)Hayyim; Ginsburg has rightly said that Jacob 'rescued the Massorah from perdition.' Something of the same kind can be said of Ginsburg." (ibid., p. XI) Even though Ginsburg claims to follow Jacob ben Hayyim's work, which came to be recognized as the true Masoretic text, very closely, it differs often from it. Hence, it is actually a recension of Ginsburg, that incorporates 75 other codices as well. "The great question is: How are we to obtain a true, accurate Masoretic text? In the Prolegomenon by Professor Harry M. Orlinsky in the KTAV Publishing House reissue of Ginsburg's Introduction to the Massoretico-Critical Edition of the Hebrew Bible (...) he says (p. XV) that "none can claim to being the Masoretic text," but there can be a Masoretic text." (T)here is no (...) unified, authoritative Massorah. This can be seen in Ginsburg's massive four-volume compilation." [ibid. p. XIV] Text n Hebrew and English. Bindings with library stickers on the tails of spines and corners of covers. Some smudges, scratches and light rubbing to some ot the covers and spines. Library stamps at the top and bottoms of the book blocks. Interiors with stickers, bookplates and cards pasted on at interior covers. Bindings in good to very good-, aside from library materials, interiors in very good+ to near fine condition overall.

How to Have a Life-style. Illustrations by William Vaughan.

London: Cecil Woolf, 1975 - Small octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Ownership annotation to dust jacket rear flap verso. Spine gently rolled, light offsetting to endpapers; an excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket with toned spine, and nicks and creasing to extremities, tape repair to verso. Illustrations by William Vaughan. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Kenith, from Quentin Crisp". This copy additionally with a signed newspaper clipping from John Bull dated 20 November 1948 tipped-in to the front pastedown, and a signed typescript letter dated 2 January 1976 tipped-in to the rear pastedown. The letter is a response to a Mr Goodfellow, whom Crisp appears to have known in earlier years, replying to a letter congratulating Crisp on the 1975 television film production of The Naked Civil Servant, Crisp's 1968 autobiography, starring John Hurt. In the letter Crisp discusses "Miss Beeson" and the "turbulance" she carried with her, noting that, "she really was a horror". Miss Beeson lived on the same floor as Crisp at Beaufort Street and "her insatiable sexual appetite would often wake her neighbours during the night . sometime later Miss Beeson got religion and would lecture Quentin on his sinful life". The newspaper clipping provides an early interview with Crisp, discussing his job as a male model; "I like being a model best, it's working without having to do any work at all. It's scandalous without being dangerous". Nigel Kelly, Quentin Crisp: The Profession of Being. A Biography, p. 58. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Evidence for Anomalous Lepton Production in e+ e- Annihilation" in Physical Review Letters, Vol. 35, No. 22, 1 December 1975, pp. 1489-1492

Rome: American Physical Society, 1975 FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE DISCOVERY OF A NEW ELEMENTARY PARTICLE, THE TAU LEPTON (also known as the tau particle, or tauon). In 1995, the American physicist Martin Perl was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery. "In 1947, when a particle discovered earlier in cosmic rays - the muon - was identified to be identical to an electron but about 200 times heavier, Perl's research supervisor, Rabi, had famously exclaimed: "Who ordered that?" Perl became fascinated by this enigmatic particle, and so began his lifelong quest to answer Rabi's question. In particular, he wondered if there is just one muon, or whether there could be still heavier examples. He believed that if he could find a yet heavier form of the electron, it might help to resolve the muon's role in nature" (The Guardian, Obituary, 2014). What Perl discovered was the tau, an elementary particle similar to the electron, but is 3,500 times heavier than the electron and survives less than a trillionth of a second (whereas the electron is stable) and carries a negative electric charge and a spin of .5. "Together with the electron, the muon, and the three neutrinos, it is a lepton. Like all elementary particles with half-integral spin, the tau has a corresponding antiparticle of opposite charge but equal mass and spin, which in the tau's case is the antitau" (Wikipedia). Perl would later write that "the discovery of the tau lepton and the third generation of fermions came from the convergence of three physics streams in the late 1960's and early 1970's. These streams were: the failed attempts by myself and others to understand the connection between the electron and the muon, the development of electron-positron storage rings, and the development of the theory of sequential leptons" (Perl, The Discovery of the Tau Lepton, SLAC, September 1992). CONDITION & DETAILS: First edition in original wraps housed in a modern leather covered clamshell case, gilt-lettered at the spine. Rome, N. Y.: The American Physical Society. Quarto (10.25 x 7.50 inches; 256 x 188mm). Finely rebacked. The rear wrapper has a shipping label and there are very light stamps on the head and foot of the text block. No other markings.         CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST ..

New York: Entwhistle Books, 1975.. Octavo, cloth. First edition. 1000 copies printed. This copy is signed by Dick on the copyright page, but is not part of the 90-copy numbered issue. This variant has the "first edition" statement on the copyright page. In Dick's opinion, this novel was "easily the best of all his mainstream efforts." Written in 1959 in the midst of Dick's "exceedingly ambitious -- and totally unsuccessful -- attempt to break into the mainstream-novel market ... Graceful, wry, vulnerable, pessimistic and wise, they are novels less good only than the best of PKD's intense prime, which began immediately [with TIME OUT OF JOINT]." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 328.         The Dome Cookbook

Self Published, Wild Rose, Wisconsin 1975 - 8vo, 46pp inc covers. Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates, text in English. Some neat pencil annotations to interior and a coffee ring to rear cover, which indicates that an extremely ambitious individual actually used this copy to try and build one. Scarce private publication. "The purpose of this book is to show the actual derivation of the chord factors and dihedral angles without the use of Jargon, co-ordinates, and strange names. Also, there has been an attempt to use as few formulas and trig. functions as possible (five spherical trig. formulas and the sine & cosine functions are used for the chord factors - the lew of cosines, sine & cosine functions, and the pythagorean theorem for the dihedral angles).Unlike some other dome books, the chord factor results here are in close agreement with Bucky Fuller's (a fact that is important when working with three frequency domes)."         Evidence for Anomalous Lepton Production in e+ e- Annihilation" in Physical Review Letters, Vol. 35, No. 22, 1 December 1975, pp. 1489-1492

American Physical Society, Rome 1975 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE DISCOVERY OF A NEW ELEMENTARY PARTICLE, THE TAU LEPTON (also known as the tau particle, or tauon). 328.
