The Archive includes (i) TWENTY-THREE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED and ONE TYPED NOTE SIGNED, each letter being in German and on Buchheim's stationary and typically signed by him either "L.-G. Buchheim" or "L.-G. B." -- with one letter being signed "Lothar-Günther Buchheim" (some letters are signed twice by Buchheim); (ii) TWO BUCHHEIM AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, each in German; (iii) TWELVE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED FROM THE GERMAN PUBLISHER PIPER VERLAG ON PIPER VERLAG STATIONARY, each in German; (iv) an ORIGINAL CONTRACT COUNTERPART BETWEEN THE AMERICAN PUBLISHER ALFRED A. KNOPF AND PIPER VERLAG SIGNED BY EACH PARTY and dated August 20, 1973 for the publication of "Das Boot" in English translation with exclusive rights being granted in the United States, Mexico, The Philippine Republic, and non-exclusive rights granted worldwide except in the British Commonwealth, South Africa, and the Irish Republic. Lothar-Günther Buchheim was a German propaganda officer serving in Kriegsmarine (the German Navy) the during World War II acting as war correspondent and recounting his experiences on German minesweepers, destroyers, and submarines. In such capacity, Buchheim also made drawings and took photographs. He ultimately served on U-96, a submarine commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock who was a leading German submarine commander during the Battle of the Atlantic which lasted from 1939 until the Allies defeated Germany in 1945. Lehmann-Willenbrock came to great fame due to his success and the publicity thereof provided by Buchheim who was aboard U-96 during its sinking of several of the 24 ships sunk under Lehmann-Willenbrock's command. Several decades after the War, Buchheim wrote his most famous and most successful book, "Das Boot", a fictionalized autobiographical account of his time during the War. "Das Boot" provided the basis for the 1981 German film nominated for six Academy Awards. Nicknamed "Starnberg volcano", Buchheim was known for his temper, and both that temper and his corresponding temperament clearly show through in his letters. In them, he repeatedly complains about Knopf, his American publisher, and often about his American Agent, Joan Daves, peppering his letters with such phrases as "There is nothing worse for an author...", of a French translator "she is so miserable", for a telegram of the American efforts he "waited with fear and trembling", he describes himself as "extraordinarily stingy", complains constantly about a "lack of communication" from New York and states that it is driving him wild, describes American reviewers as idiots, others as imbeciles, declares himself to be annoyed, sour, and hanging "in the air" over the lack of information from Knopf, complains vehemently about being forwarded a hospital bill in the amount of $35 for a Proctoscopy he had while in New York -- arguing that it should have been covered by Knopf as part of his expenses for a meeting in New York, says his anger at Knopf "knows no limits at all", complains about the American translation of "Das Boot" states that the Hollywood folks trying to make a movie of the book must refer to the UK translation in order to understand the book. He seldom shows satisfaction, much less happiness. In response to one of his letters, Carol Janeway of Knopf begins her reply to him with "Dear Herr Buchheim, Peace! White Flag! Surrender!". All in all a remarkable and interesting Archive replete with Buchheim signatures and EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE as such.

        Women are beautiful

Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Hardcover. 0374292779 For your consideration is the hardcover first edition of, "Women Are Beautiful," by Garry Winogrand. Our book has been flat-signed by Garry Winogrand on the title page and is graded Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. The dust jacket is excellent, still glossy with just a few minor scratches and minor edge-scuffing. There is one tiny 1/4" tear at the bottom left spine edge of jacket (which is almost unnoticable) otherwise to tears to the jacket, and the jacket has not been price-clipped. We have deliberately photographed the book without a jacket protector to better reveal the condition of the jacket, but a jacket protector will be added prior to shipment. The boards are excellent with just very light edgewear and a couple small spots of fading to the black cloth. Very faint evidence of foxing (almost unnoticable) to the top and bottom textblock edges. Endpapers and text pages clean and free of unwanted markings. The binding is excellent with a straight spine. This book will be stored and delivered in a secure storage box with foam padding, and will be shipped by Express Mail to any domestic or international location at no additional charge. Published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1975; 93 pages; Hardcover binding. . Very Good.

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again)

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishers, 1975 First edition, first printing. Signed by Warhol on the half-title: "AW" and additionally inscribed on the same page with a soup can illustration: "Date May 24 75 / Roz Cole / [soup can] Love / Andy Pie". Publisher's red-orange cloth and yellow boards, lettered in black and white; in the original black dust jacket designed by Herb Lubalin, with a photograph of the author by Philippe Halsman to the front panel, lettered in white and yellow. Book fine; unclipped dust jacket with a hint of wear to the spine ends, else fine. A bright copy, with excellent provenance. Warhol inscribed this copy of The Philosophy of Andy Warhol to his literary agent Roz Cole, who helped inspire the writing of this text. As Bob Colacello remembers in his memoir Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up (1990), "Roz told Andy that he should write his autobiography. He told her that [Bob Colacello] was writing his biography, referring to [his] Warhol films book…Roz was very quick on her feet: 'Well, why don't you write your philosophy. I mean, if anyone has a philosophy, it's got to be you.' Andy loved the idea…of course his idea of philosophy was going shopping for underwear, and musing on love and sex along the way- and why not? 'Philosophy is anything, Bob. Just make it up.'" The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is Warhol's second commercially published book, created after he had been established as a major 20th century artist and international celebrity. Although it was professionally published, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is only marginally more serious than his art books; the text is abstract, more a collection of scattered reflections and thoughts than a cohesive narrative. It covers a variety of subjects, including Warhol's thoughts on his childhood, his life as a celebrity, art, New York, life, and love. The Philosophy of Andy Warhol was largely ghostwritten by Warhol's secretary Pat Hackett, to whom the book is dedicated; in his subsequent commercial publications, Warhol included Hackett as a co-author.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

The Kelmscott Chaucer, with a companion volume of Burne-Jones pencil drawings introduced by Duncan Robinson

London: Basilisk Press, 1975. One of 500 copies. Volume One, The Works of Chaucer: with black and white plates, woodcut title borders initials and frames, printed in double columns in red and black ink, fore-edge untrimmed, 554 pp; Volume Two : , tipped-in frontispiece portraits of William Morris and Sir Edward Burne-Jones, 85 tipped-in black and white plates, b/w illustrations. 146 pp. 2 vols. folio. Bound in full "Larkspur" linen in red and sand-color designed by William Morris, printed blue and grey spine labels, in a blue heavy cardboard slipcase which has some wear and spotting. Fine. Not only is this a faithful and beautifully executed facsimile of the original and very scarce Kelmscott edition, but it has the benefit of the added companion volume by Duncan Robinson. This reproduces for the first time the 85 finished drawings which Burne-Jones created for the half page woodcut illustrations in the Kelmscott Chaucer, the originals of which are now in the Fitzwilliam Museum. The drawings are accompanied by Burne-Jones' preliminary sketches and of course Robinson's comments on the edition and the history of the Morris- Burne-Jones collaboration and how the idea for the Chaucer developed.

Surreale Originalzeichnung in Mischtechnik ( Bleistift, Kohle, Aquarell )

1975.. Surreale Originalzeichnung in Mischtechnik ( Bleistift, Kohle, Graphit, Aquarell ) auf stärkerem Papier. Möglicherweise im Umfeld des Zyklus *Frauensprache*.entstanden. Rechts unten mit *A.
