The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer [facsimile of the Kelmscott Chaucer]

The Basilisk Press, London 1975 - 44x30cm, 560+192pp (2 volumes). With facsimiles of 87 illustrations by Sir Edward Burne-Jones engraved on wood by W H Hooper, and additional multiple woodcut borders, frames and initials, and over 100 plates of reproductions of the original pencil drawings tipped-in to the companion volume. Copy 23 of 500 for sale (515) printed letterpress in black and red on St Cuthbert's Mill mould-made rag paper with William Morris's 'carp' watermark, bound in full Morris 'Larkspur' pattern maroon and beige coarse linen by Liberty of London, blue paper title-labels to the backstrips with spare labels tipped-in to the rear of each volume, in a substantial slipcase of wooden construction covered with dark blue Ingres paper. With a copy of the Prospectus (which also includes the Basilisk Press publications 'The Australian Flower Paintings of Ferdinand Bauer' and 'The Red Books of Humphrey Repton', to which is laid-in a bifolium specimen sheet, containing three (disjoint) pages from the Chaucer, plus the details of the edition with some hand annotations in ink. The Basilisk Chaucer is universally acknowledged to be the greatest facsimile of Kelmscott's magnum opus, and an important Press book in its own right. The perfectionism of Peter Guy, the designer, and the amount of care and work behind the creation of 'as perfect a replica of the original as is physically possible' (Prospectus) is detailed in an article by Bernard Roberts in Matrix 22 (Whittington Press, 2002). It is clear that no expense was spared in achieving the best result in every detail: the capture of the original pages, the choices of paper and ink, the presswork itself (by the John Roberts Press) etc. To take just one element: the specially-made and watermarked paper from St Cuthbert's Mill was deemed good enough only after two previous trial formulations were rejected, and has some claim to improve on the original due to its higher opacity, eliminating the slight show-through associated with Morris's more translucent Batchelor paper. The article also reveals that one or two of the disbound sheets of the original Kelmscott volume used as the source suffered some smudging when inserted into transparent envelopes for storage ¿ Morris's ink was still not fully dry after eighty years! The companion volume, by Duncan Robinson, contains essays on the genesis of the Kelmscott Chaucer and the details of the evolution of Burne-Jones's illustrations from the original pencil sketches, through ink copies by Catterson-Smith and Fairfax-Murray, to the final printed woodcuts by W H Hooper. The Basilisk Press published a handful of extremely fine books, but the Chaucer, its first, stands as the Press's magnum opus just as the original was for Kelmscott. The Basilisk facsimile was itself used as the master source to create the 2002 Folio Society facsimile. This copy has no rubbing, wear or marks whatsoever to the somewhat vulnerable linen bindings. The heavy wooden slipcase is also vulnerable to damage given the weight that must be tackled when moving and handling the book, but this example is in well-above average condition with no tears or chips. Fine (a few fine brown speckles to the top edge of the text block of the main volume, and short ink ownership inscriptions to the front pastedowns in both volumes), in a Near Fine (some light fading) slipcase with a Very Good (minor old creasing near the spine) Prospectus. Please note this book is extremely large and heavy and additional shipping costs beyond our standard rates are likely to apply. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again) (SIGNED)

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York 1975 - Not price clipped; original $7.95 price showing. Letter line "B C D E" appears to designate the first printing, since there's no room for an "A." Book will close its own text block; it's "very good" although there are two small cracks to yellow cloth along bottom edge of front board. Warhol generally signed this book with his initials (only) in black marker. A number of copies do exist in which he signed his full name, however, this being is one of them. The pen used is interesting; it appears to be the color used by proofreaders marking final typeset pages, designed to disappear if re-photographed in B&W, known in the trade as "Non-Repro Blue." Closed one-inch tear to top of jacket spine. 241 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Deux croquis originaux : la Fontaine de Mercure

1975 - - 1975, 21x29,7cm, 2 feuilles. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Two original pencil sketches by Alexander Calder. Two handwritten mentions at the head of each leaflet, one in the ballpoint pen of an unidentified editor ("Mercury fountain by Calder Saché 1975 may") and the other in pencil in the hand of Calder: "Therese Herdek Switzerland " . In 1937, Calder was commissioned by the Spanish government, in struggle against the Francoist insurrection, to make a modern sculpture to present at the Paris World Fair. He is thus the only non-Hispanic artist to exhibit in the Pavilion of Spain. He then imagines his Fountain of Mercury, a tribute to the miners of Almadén who resist the siege held by Franco's troops. The mines then supplied 60% of the global mercury and this sculpture is a strong political act of opposition to fascism. The construction of this monumental sculpture required 5,000 kilos of liquid mercury, which were transported from the mines to Paris. The work consists of a perpetual fountain of mercury surmounted by a mobile with two pendants: one is a red circle and the other is made of the name of "Almadén"; at the foot of the basin is inscribed "Spanish Mercury Almadén". During the exhibition, the fountain was exhibited alongside Picasso's Guernica and Miró's Reaper . Calder offered the sculpture to the Joan Miró Foundation in 1975, moved by the close friendship that united him to the painter. These two precious sketches were made during the movement of the work and its installation to the foundation. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

William Burroughs in front of Exec. Hdqtrs, Burroughs Corp., NYC

New York, 1975. Large format gelatin silver print (45 x 29 cm.), matted in aluminum frame (63.x 48 cm.). With photographer's embossed stamp at bottom right margin of print. On verso: signed, dated, and titled by Malanga; hand-numbered as print number 4 of 10. For the author of The soft machine, and one of the typewriter's most legendary lovers, it's hard not to imagine the shadow of the family business looming large. The Burroughs Corporation was originally founded in 1886 as the American Arithmometer Company, mostly designing adding machines for businesses. Burroughs the Corporation would eventually embrace twentieth century computing, before merging with Sperry UNIVAC to form the pioneering UNISYS. Hence the URL: burroughs.com. And thus the brilliance of Gerard Malanga's 1975 large-scale portrait of a then-elderly William S. in front of the Corporation's executive headquarters; the language of analogue versus digital. Burroughs is rumoured to have been contracturally obligated to avoid any association with the Corporation, making this photo a royal bird-flip.

These edifices marked the burial sites of many eminent Egyptians during Egypt's Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom. Egyptologists call these tombs mastaba, which is the Arabic word for "stone bench."
