Galley Proofs for "Something Nothing"; Hone Tuwhare's fourth collection of poetry

Dunedin: Caveman Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. (1974). First Edition. Hardcover. Corrected galley proofs for Hone Tuwhare's fourth book of poetry, "Something Nothing". This title was published in Dunedin by the Caveman Press in 1974. Loose long galley leaves, dimensions: 152 x 456 mm. The leaves are printed on one side only. The leaves are held loosely within cloth boards with ties and a printed paper label on the front board. The manuscript corrections consist of the removal of the comma from "Something, Nothing" at each occurence, and changes to the page numbering. There are also a few handwritten notes (presumably made by the Caveman Press publisher Trevor Reeves) on the first leaf. The proofs do not have the contents page or the copyright page, but there is a note that the contents page is to be made in the same style as that used in "Sapwood and Milk". The illustrations by Robin White, which appear in the final published book, are not included. There are a few stains to the first few leaves, and some rubbing and wear to the corners of some leaves. "Something Nothing" has some of Tuwhare's best poems, including "Ron Mason", written after the death of RAK Mason. Several poems from "Something Nothing" were used in later anthologies of Tuwhare's poems: "Selected Poems" (1980) had seven poems from Something Nothing (along with 20 from No Ordinary Sun, 5 from Come Rain Hail, 5 from Sapwood and Milk, and 2 from Making a Fist of It.) In "Year of the Dog, Poems New and Selected"(1982), 12 of the 32 poems were from Something Nothing. In "Was Wirklicher ist als Sterben" (1985), 5 of the 33 poems were from Something Nothing. ; Folio .

BATTA narrates Aphorism. Original etchings and aphorisms by Tamiji Kitagawa. (Author's presentation copy with photograph). 1000, Limited Edition.

UNAC, Tokyo 1974 - Limited to 1,000 copies. Cloth backed, landscape format in original stapled slipcase with paper on-lay to all sides. Minor tearing to slipcase edges, with yellowing to on-lay. Minor yellowing to edges internally. Unpaginated. With some 30 colour (some litho) reproductions of the artist's work and similar of text. ; Not signed but Kitagawa's photograph (age 76) loosely inserted with presentation in Spanish to back. A Japanese painter born in Shizuoka, he took part in the movement of the twenties and thirties known as the "Mexican Renaissance". He studied art at the Art Students League in New York then moved to Mexico City in 1921. He was a pupil of the Open Air School of Painting -the teaching project promoted by the painter Alfredo Ramos Mart?nez -inspired by "Plein air". Kitagawa assimilated and adopted the pictorial methods of the schools of Tlalpan and Taxco, the last of which he founded and directed until he returned to his homeland in 1936. In Japan, he introduced the Mexican style of depicting landscape and people, at the same time enriching it with local traditions such as the Ukiyoe. This brought him prestige and recognition as a Japanese painter. In the fifties he returned to Mexico briefly and came under new influences, mainly from the artist Rufino Tamayo whose work he admired, studied and incorporated into his unique Mexican-Japanese style.         The Sixteenth Round from #1 Contender to #45472

VIKING PRESS, NY 1974 - 1st ed 1st Printing. Dj tanned along top edge, light edge wear, small nick at top spine edge, 3 very slight scuff/nicks to top front cover, and lightly rubbed cover. General shelf wear, lightly tanned edges, good binding, clean body and unmarked text. About the book: The survivor of a difficult childhood and youth, Rubin Carter rose to become a top contender for the middleweight boxing crown. But his career crashed to a halt on May 26, 1967, when he and another man were found guilty of the murder of three white people in a New Jersey bar. While in prison, Carter chronicled the events that led him from the ring to three consecutive life sentences and 10 years in solitary confinement. His story was a cry for help to the public, an attempt to set the record straight and force a new trial. Bob Dylan wrote a classic anthem for Carter's struggle; and Joan Baez, Muhammad Ali, Roberta Flack, and thousands more took up the cause as well. This account is an eye-opening examination of growing up black in America, problems in the United States prison system, and Carter's own battles. A fine copy in very good first printing dust jacket (priced $7.95). with rubbing at spine ends and corner tips and several faint. scratches to rear panel. A nice copy overall and a pleasant. association. (#146487). First edition. Signed inscription by Haldeman dated 1976 to SF fan publisher Bill Bowers for "many good times" on the title page. "Tough, slick narrative of an interstellar which lasts [over] 1000 years. To the soldier hero, it seems to last about ten years, thanks to the time- dilation effect of faster-than- light travel. Good, realistic, military SF which actually subverts many of the clichés of that category ... (he was a Vietnam veteran, which helped). Initially rejected by 18 publishers, it has since sold over a million copies." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), pp. 141-2. Haldeman's first SF novel.         The Mote In God's Eye

New York: Simon & Schuster. NF/NF. 1974. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0671218336 . 1st edition/1st printing. 1st printing with full number line. Near fine, straight, clean book with no handwriting in it and with the silver spine lettering in fine condition, with very slight edge fading to the binding--as usual--and slight toning to text paper--as usual. There are a couple of very small, very faint spots to page edges, and a touch of shelfwear to the lower front corner; no other faults. The near fine price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp and unfaded, with a few very tiny nicks/rubs at spine fold ends and flap fold ends and one small surface rub with no color loss to the back panel gutter area but with no tears or chips. Quite a handsome example of this scarce in the 1st printing classic. I agree with Robert Heinlein's blurb on this one; it is one of the very best sci-fi books I've ever read, with a gut-wrenching ending. Not a story likely to be forgotten easily. .

        Autograph Manuscript signed

      - ("lawrence ferlinghetti") 1 page, ca. 1974. 11" x 8 1/2". Very good. Poet Steve Richmond had requested that Ferlinghetti write an introduction to his book of poetry "Earth Rose."* This was his response. In part: "Bukowski loves if Plymell says it's "Equal to Artaud" and "what McClure wishes he were doing." The Free Press quotes it the author Steve Richmond tells me his book "Earth Rose" needs fertilizing by my fertile brain. I say let it bloom by itself if it can - " *Earth Rose. Santa Monica, Earth Books, 1924. Foreword by Charles Bukowski. Provenance: Purchased from Steve Richmond, who said this was unpublished. Ferlinghetti (1919-) poet, painter, activist, co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers.
