        Carrie

New English Library 1974 - First edition, first impression of King’s first novel – rare, with a print run of only 600. Very Good minus: bound in clean purple boards with light wear to the corner and spine tips; bright gilt. Small previous owner’s signature to the top of the ffep beside an inked number, ‘314’; the shadow of a removed bookseller’s label to the foot of the front pastedown and a little darkening and minor marking to the endpapers; the cheap paper used has browned (as is almost always the case), particularly at the extremities, with foxing and light soiling to the edges; the binding is secure but with a hint of play at the hinges (again, as is common); one page (p33) has a 6cm tear rising by the gutter from the bottom edge (not affecting the text). The unclipped dustwrapper (£2.50 net stated) is Very Good: very bright and striking, with no fading at all to the spine and no tears; rubbing and light wear to the spine tips, corners and (very slightly) to the edges; some short ripples to the laminate and a few minor, smoothed creases – presents very well indeed in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover. All-in-all, a nice example of a milestone in fiction. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Diviners

Toronto: McClelland and Stewart [0-7710-4748-7] 1974, 1st edition. (Hardcover) 382pp. Near fine in near fine dust jacket. Large Octavo. Original pale green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Light discolouration to top and bottom of boards, especially at spine. Black endpapers, faded around edges. Tight text block, very clean save for some very light stains on outer edge of text block. In dust jacket, not price clipped. Lightly worn with some very small closed tears to and slight discolouration at edges. A lovely copy. A first edition of the Governor General Award winner, Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence. A signature on the front free endpaper identifies this copy as previously belonging to Raymond Hernandez. The inscription, written by Laurence on the title page reads "Ray, Hope and peace, Margaret Laurence, 1974". Stapled to the top of the title page with two staples is a sheet of paper with writing in blue pen. The paper says "8 November, Friday- Dinner 6 pm." Below is the address of, and directions to, the house where Margaret Laurence lived from 1974 till her death in 1987 in Lakefield, on. This house now has a historical plaque placed there by the Lakefield Historical Society in 1993. Below this is written a phone number and below that M. Laurence. As it is written in the same hand as the inscription on the book, and the writing and name look very similar it is assumed that the note was also written by Laurence, who must have invited Hernandez for dinner while signing his copy. Looking at the back of the note reveals that the paper was originally the cover for the Trent University Staff Benefits program- which suggests that he may have been an employee of the University in Peterburough where Laurence worked as a Chancellor from 1981-1983. Placed loosely in the book are two photographs, presumed to be Raymond Hernandez. Though we were unable to attain any more information about Hernandez it is apparant that he was in some way associated with Margaret Laurence, probably on a personal level. Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence..

The Karla Trilogy] Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, Smiley's People

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1974-1979. First editions of each title in the author's acclaimed Karla Trilogy. Octavo, original black cloth. 3 volumes. Each are signed by Le Carre on the title page. Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy is signed "David Cornwell aka John LeCarre". Each are near fine to fine in near fine dust jackets, with The Honourable Schoolboy price-clipped. An excellent set, uncommon in this condition and signed. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre's inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and '60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel's popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre's numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

        The Wandering Tattler

Wisconson: The Perishable Press Limited, 1974 First edition, first printing. Limited edition, one of 130 copies signed by the author in orange ink on the half-title page. A fine copy. Overall, a very bright and attractive copy. The Wandering Tattler is a collection of poems by Diane Wakoski, a prolific American poet known for the personal quality of her writing. It is truly a work of literary art, as admirable for the craftsmanship of its physical construction as for its words and images. Wakoski's poetry, which incorporates a heavy use of bird-like and spring imagery, is enhanced by the accompanying stunning illustrations by Ellen Layon. These motifs are continued in the publishing and printing processes; published "as our Sun enters Aries or the first day of Spring," the drawings and illustrations are printed on handmade Shadwell papers, the colors of which were drawn from the "colors of the actual birds." Additionally, The Perishable Press Limited, run by professor, artist, and book designer Walter Hamady, boasts the use of a 'tz' ligature in "When the Quetzal Bird Stole the Roadrunner's Feathers," emphasizing the artistic and personal nature of this book's publication.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

THE STORY OF CUPID AND PSYCHE

London: Clover Hill Editions by the Rampant Lions Press, 1974. Limited Edition, numbered 85 of 130 sets. Full Leather. Folio. Edward Burne-Jones. Two volumes full bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in midnight blue goat housed in patterned-paper slipcase accompanied by matching leather-backed clamshell containing a set of 47 collotype prints of the original drawings and 44 proofs of the wood engravings. A very nice set with only light rubbing to the portfolio; loose plates are clean and bright. Conceived of by Burne-Jones and William Morris in the 1860s, Morris’s Cupid and Psyche with Burne-Jones’s woodcuts was never realized because, according to Joseph Dunlap, “he could not match the force of his wood engravings with the diffident type faces available in the 1860s.” After Morris’s death Cockerell and Burne-Jones discussed a Kelmscott Press edition. Several specimen sheets were issued in 1897 (Peterson B6), but with Burne-Jones’s death the following year, the edition was abandoned. In conjunction with Clover Hill Editions, Will and Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press produced this edition with Morris’s Troy type newly cast from the original matrices held by the Cambridge University Press. Roderick Cave suggests this most ambitious production is their crowning achievement “in an unjustified setting, which compliments the original wood engravings in a way none but the bravest would have attempted.” Peterson B6; Roderick Cave, The Private Press.
