Conducting Bodies [Signed] [Les Corps conducteurs]

The Viking Press, New York 1974 - A Very Good or better copy of the first American edition, first printing -- being the first publication of the novel in English Translation (quite light corner bumping, small spot to the rear board, light soiling), in a Very Good + mildly-toned dust jacket (quite light soiling), SIGNED BY CLAUDE SIMON on the title page as follows: "hommage de l'auteur / Claude Simon"; Simon's novel which rejects the traditional novelistic concerns as character, anecdote, and plot, but which leaves the reader to sort things out. Claude Simon won the 1985 Nobel Prize for Literature for "his novels that combine the poet’s and the painter’s creativeness with a deepened awareness of time in the depiction of the human condition". Having an excellent Provenance, this copy comes from the Luce Estate. In our experience, signed copies of the book in any language are quite scarce. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY CLAUDE SIMON.         The Madrid Codices, 6 Volume Set with Original Lucite Case

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1974. Quarto. The rediscovery of the lost manuscripts of Leonardo that had been lost since 1830, were rediscovered in 1967 and then researched, photographed and translated by Ladislao Reti who did not live to see them in print. Contains also glossary, index and bibliographic notes. McGraw-Hill produced a superb example of the highest quality which originally was issued in this Deluxe Limited Edition of 1,000 copies (of which this is number #497) complete with a lucite case designed to hold the entire set. It was issued at $750 and generally went only to high end collectors. Since the plates in this volume were not retained, the set will never again be reprinted without second generation images. The codices which had been lost since 1830 have brought to the modern history of mechanics and science the largest single archive of Leonardo's work. These represent his personal work and they were intended for his private work. Whether it is his planned diversion of the Arno River (those who remember the 1966 flood will wish it had been carried out), the fortification works in Peiombino or the giant equestrian statue of Francesco Sforza will gain insight into how one of the great minds in history envisioned and noted his ideas. This set will remain essential and nothing short of access to the originals will allow the serious reader access to his thought and vision. V. 1-2 Facsimiles of Codex Madrid I and II; V. 3: Reti Commentary; V. 4-5 Transcription and translation of Codex Madrid I and II. All volumes are fine in original publishers red morocco with gilt lettering.

The Story of Cupid and Psyche

London & Cambridge: Clover Hill Editions, 1974. Burne-Jones, Edward. Two quarto volumes plus portfolio. xiv, 36, 26; (v), 92 pp. From an edition of 500 copies, this is one of 130 deluxe copies bound in full blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and with an accompanying portfolio. In 1865 William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones began work on an edition of Cupid and Psyche and, for want of an appropriate typeface, did not complete it. Nonetheless, Burne-Jones had completed fifty finished drawings and Morris had cut the blocks for at least thirty-eight of the drawings. The existence of these woodblocks was brought to the attention of Will and Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press by Colin Franklin. They decided to print an edition using Morris's Troy type, which was made available by Brooke Crutchley. The current edition is the result, and is as close as one can hope to get to the original intent of Morris and Burne-Jones. Volume I is a monograph by A.R. Dufty, secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of London (owner of the original wood-blocks), with plates of Burne-Jones' preparatory drawings. Volume II contains the text of Cupid and Psyche printed in Morris's Troy type, with illustrations from the original blocks, printed on J. Green mould-made paper. The portfolio contains collotypes of 47 original drawings and proofs pulled from the 44 extant engravings. Slipcase shows light toning, minor rubbing to spine ends of portfolio case, else fine.

1974. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. CARRIE. SCREENPLAY by LARRY COHEN and PAUL MONASH. ADAPTED from the NOVEL by STEVEN KING (note that STEPHEN KING" is misspelled in this First Draft as "STEVEN KING"). This is an ORIGINAL FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY. At this point the film, Carrie, was in early development. This was, perhaps, a spec script under the umbrella of Producer Paul Monash. Stephen King stated that in 1974 he was paid only $2,500 for the film rights to Carrie. He added that he was only 26 at the time. that Carrie was his first book, and that in hindsight it probably helped his career a great deal. (For $2,500 I guess that the scriptwriters didn't feel obligated to spell Stephen King's name correctly in the First Draft!) This First Draft follows King's novel, however later drafts and the final script are all substantially different (see info on the production of the film at the end of this listing). Bound in blue card covers with metal binding brackets, a window is cut out of the front cover to expose the title on the title-page. The inner pages are photocopied on 8.5x11" paper (photocopying was, and still is, how original copies of a draft script were quickly produced and distributed to film producers, agents, directors, and others involved in a motion picture production), pages printed on one side only, 141 pages plus a title page. This was obviously an early copy machined copy, as the pages have numerous marks, smudges, dark areas, etc., all of which are indicative of those not very good early copy machines. On the rear page edges (the spine) is hand-written "CARRIE Copy 2 RETURN TO L.C." I assume this indicates that this is the second copy of this script and that was supposed to be returned to the writer, Larry Cohen. On the title page is handwritten at the top a "#2". The title-page has the printed information "FIRST DRAFT" "A PAUL MONASH PRODUCTION" and "STEVEN KING" (sic). There is NO date, however it is circa 1974 or early 1975. There are some editorial margin notes, and some underlining and circling of text, here and there throughout. HOWEVER, these are copied onto this "Copy 2". Only the writing on the spine and the "#2" on the title page appear to be handwritten directly onto this copy of the First Draft. The title page includes the printed name/address/phone of the ZIEGLER ROSS AGENCY, with its telephone: "CRestview 8-0070". This information on the title page probably indicates that this "First Draft" was being shipped by the ZR Agency to potential film distributors, and that the film was not yet tied to United Artists. (UA distributed the film in 1976). VERY GOOD condition, the simple metal bracketed card covers have sunning to the margins and some edge wear, the inner pages have some corner creases, there are numerous copy-machine spots, smudges and marks but the script is always legible. SCARCE - this is the only copy of this first draft screenplay of CARRIE that I have ever seen, and is my only copy. Quite a treasure for the Stephen King collector. You can read about the Film Carrie on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet.

        One Special Summer *Autographed Edition*

New York: Delacorte Press, 1974. Hardbound. New, still in shrinkwrap. No finer copy to be found of this edition. Blue papier mache covered boards inside a similarly constructed blue papier mache covered cardboard slipcase. Unpaginated, (appx. 63 pp) with over 100 illustrations, many in color, including 21 photographic reproductions. This book is a facsimile reproduction of the travel diary kept by (then) 21-year-old Jacqueline Bouvier and her 17-year-old sister Lee on their European tour in the summer of 1951. The stories and letters describe the sisters' encounters with the various cultures of Paris, Venice, Madrid, Nice, Lucerne, London, and Rome. The stories and writings are intimate and engaging. Filled with beautiful, often funny, sketches of incidents from their travels. These are all drawn by Jacqueline (who was an art student at the time). Snapshot pictures depict the sisters in the casual fashions of the time, while Jacqueline's drawings show the sisters in beautiful, more imaginary clothing. This copy still in shrinkwrap, with the price sticker and special label indicating it to be autographed still attached. One of only 500 copies signed and slipcased by both sisters.

Codex Borbonicus: Bibliothèque de l’Assemblée nationale, Paris (Y 120).: Vollstaendige Faksimile Ausg. des Codex im Originalformat. Codices selecti; XLIV.

Akademische Druck u. Verlagsanstalt, Graz. 1974 - The Codex Borbonicus is an Aztec codex written by Aztec priests shortly before or after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The codex is named after the Palais Bourbon in France. It is held at the Bibliothèque de l’Assemblée Nationale in Paris. In 2004 Maarten Jansen and Gabina Aurora Pérez Jiménez proposed that it be given the indigenous name Codex Cihuacoatl, after the goddess Cihuacoatl. The Codex Borbonicus is a single 46.5-foot (14.2 m long sheet of amatl "paper". Although there were originally 40 accordion-folded pages, the first two and the last two pages are missing. Like all pre-Columbian codices, it was originally entirely pictorial in nature, although some Spanish descriptions were later added. There is dispute as to whether the Codex Borbonicus is pre-Columbian, as the calendar pictures all contain room above them for Spanish descriptions. Codex Borbonicus can be divided into three sections: The first section is one of the most intricate surviving divinatory calendars (or tonalamatl). Each page represents one of the 20 trecena (or 13-day periods), in the tonalpohualli (or 260-day year). Most of the page is taken up with a painting of the ruling deity or deities, with the remainder taken up with the 13 day-signs of the trecena and 13 other glyphs and deities. With these 26 symbols, the priests were able to create horoscopes and divine the future. The first 18 pages of the codex (all that remain of the original 20) show considerably more wear than the last sections, very likely indicating that these pages were consulted more often. The second section of the codex documents the Mesoamerican 52 year cycle, showing in order the dates of the first days of each of these 52 solar years. These days are correlated with the nine Lords of the Night. The third section is focused on rituals and ceremonies, particularly those that end the 52-year cycle, when the "new fire" must be lit. This section is unfinished. VERY RARE HIGH QUALITY REPRODUCTION IN THE SAME SIZE, DEFECTS AND COLORS OT THE ORIGINAL. Formato: 39 p., 39x40 cm, bross + 1 tavola costituita da 36 fogli uniti di misura 40x1420 cm ca. (40 cm x 14,2 METRI!!!), custodia editoriale di misure 44x43x5 cm. Molto buono.
