The Story of Cupid and Psyche, with illustrations designed by Edward Burne-Jones, mostly engraved on the wood by William Morris; the Introduction by A.R. Dufty.

Folio. 2 vols.; original cloth-backed patterned boards, leather spine labels, top edges gilt; 44 wood-engravings after designs by Edward Burne-Jones, mostly engraved by William Morris, and with 26 plates in the Introduction volume showing preliminary sketches for the engravings; a fine copy in the matching slipcase. Printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. This is No. 206 of 270 numbered copies.. Volume I contains the Introduction by A.R. Dufty and the plates of preliminary sketches, Volume II contains the poem and the engravings. [Sold with] One of 100 portfolios containing a set of proofs of the 44 wood-engravings, this no. xciv. (Portfolio a little sunned) The limitation of this publication is slightly confusing. 130 copies numbered I - CXXX were issued with a portfolio containing a set of collotype prints of the 47 original drawings and a set of proofs of the 44 wood-engravings. There were then 270 copies numbered 1 to 270 of the two volumes. Additionally there were 100 portfolios numbered i to c each containg a set of the proofs of the 44 wood-engravings. We are offering here a combination of one of the 270 numbered two volume sets and a copy of the 100 portfolios of proofs. "Cupid and Psyche" is one of the twenty-four stories that make up William Morris's The Earthly Paradise, a poem in Chaucerian metres. Morris and Burne-Jones had planned to produce a great illustrated edition of the work which, though begun, was never completed, and an unillustrated commercial edition was published in 1868-70. The wood-block illustrations for "Cupid and Psyche," designed by Burne-Jones and mostly engraved by Morris, have survived and are here published for the first time in their context. For this edition the matrices of the Kelmscott Troy types were made available for casting and this becomes the first book printed in the type since 1898. Several of the original drawings were used as sources for new blocks, cut to illustrate Robert Bridges' poem "Eros & Psyche", published by the Gregynog Press in 1935.

THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION (Fine Signed Copy)

Jonathan Cape, UK 1974 - Fine, sharp copy of mesmerising Ballard tapas selection, tasty, spicy and as satisfying as a mixed metaphor utilizing the music of Pink Floyd and class A drugs. The boards are black, clean and sharp, even though there this is the suspicion of the front board's upper corner having had a most gentle encounter with gravity. The spine is tight, rock solid and and aware of the prestige of being associated with the book's wonderfully clean, wholesome pages, and then there's the superbly white, neat and clean dustjacket. The dw is clipped, but bears the official Jonathan Cape price sticker of £2.95. The book is SIGNED BY J G BALLARD ON THE TITLE PAGE. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A short story, but the longest written, by Jorge Francsico Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (1899-1986), a literary giant in both the Spanish-language world and internationally. Regrettably never awarded the Nobel Prize, his works are highly regarded and are seen as the precursor to magical realism later typified by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. "The Congress" can be viewed as a political essay and was Borges' personal favourite; as with many human endeavors it opens with a high-minded goal and ends in ashes. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in gold cloth, white lettering on the spine, ivory laid paper endpapers, tipped-in frontispiece being a reproduction of a pencil sketch by Hugo Manning entitled "Jorge Luis Borges in London, 1971"; small quarto size (approximately 9.75" tall), pagination: (i-vi), 1-17, blank, colophon; issued in a limited edition of 300 total, of which 50 were printed on Glastonbury Coloured Antique Laid paper and, per the colophon page, were signed by the author and translator; this copy is also signed by the artist and it number 3 of the 50. The volume is protected by a clear acetate dust wrapper. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the dust wrapper is also fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       The Honey Dun Press. London. - (c1810) 1974 new edition. De luxe issue. Large 8vo (162 x 253mm). Ppxii,43 and vi,30,i. Tipped-in hand-coloured frontispiece facsimile of the first edition, four mounts containing thirty flies, marbled end-papers. Fully bound in crushed red Morocco, five raised bands, gilt decorated spine, all edges gilt. Maroon cloth-bound slipcase. A very fine copy in slipcase. Copy XV of 55 large paper de luxe copies with flies. Signed by Jack Heddon, Thomas Clegg and Terry Griffiths. First published in Chepstow circa 1810, the first edition is extremely scarce with copies changing hands for tens of thousands of pounds. This is the large paper de luxe issue of the 1974 Honey Dun Press edition. Large 8vo (162 x 253mm). Ppxii,43 and vi,30,i. Tipped-in hand-coloured facsimile of the frontispiece of the first edition, four mounts at the rear of the book containing thirty flies dressed to Scotcher's patterns, marbled end-papers. Fully bound in crushed red Morocco by Aquarius, five raised bands, gilt decorated spine, all edges gilt. Maroon cloth-bound slipcase. Fifty-five copies were produced thus. It was intended for Thomas Clegg to tie thirty flies to Scotcher's patterns to be mounted within each copy. However, due to other commitments Clegg was only able to produce the first six patterns for each copy. Patterns seven to twenty were therefore tied by Terry Griffiths and patterns twenty-one to thirty tied by Jack Heddon. All three have signed the limitation page. Loosely laid into this copy is a publisher's notice giving the information about who tied the flies, a Honey Dun Press compliments slip signed by A.F. Sismore (Honey Dun Press binder and director) and a typed and signed letter on headed paper also signed by Sismore giving details of the binding. This de luxe edition includes the full text of the first edition along with notes by Jack Heddon. These notes were published separately in 1975. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

First edition of the great modern classic of plastic surgery, containing the first description of the pioneering concept of subfacial dissection (the SMAS-technique), which completely revolutionized the field of facelifting. Skoog's "Plastic Surgery" catapulted aging face surgery into the modern era. With this work, now a standard classic in aesthetic surgery, Skoog made the first advances in facelifting since its beginning more than 50 years earlier and began a new era of plastic surgery, shaped it into the field that we know today. In the first 70 years of the 20th century, face lifts were performed by pulling on the skin on the face and cutting the loose parts off. This was known as the cutaneous method. In 1974, Tord Skoog introduced in his pioneering magnum opus the concept of subfacial dissection, which provided suspension of the stronger deeper layer rather than relying on skin tension to achieve his facelift. It is this technique that leads Mitz and Peyronie, in 1976, to describe the anatomical Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System, known as SMAS (a term coined by Paul Tessier, Mitz and Peyronie's tutor in craniofacial surgery, after he had become familiar with Skoog's technique). After Skoog died of a heart attack, the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) concept rapidly emerged to become the standard face-lifting technique, which was the first innovative change in facelift surgery since its beginning ab. half a century earlier. "In 1974, Tord Skoog published his classic text, in which he described a revolutionary facelift procedure. Undermining the skin and superficial subcutaneous mass together as a composite, the cheek mass was then re-suspended using the superficial subcutaneous fascia (later termed the superficial musculoaponeurotic system or SMAS). This approach offered repositioning of the skin along with the superficial subcutaneous mass as a single unit, WITHOUT PLACING TENSION ON THE SKIN. Unfortunately, Skoog died before he was able to work out the nuances to develop his concept into maximally effective procedure." (Neligan, Plastic Surgery, vol. 6, p. 259)

ANTONIO SAURA. CATALOGO DE LA OBRA GRAFICA Y PINTURA SOBRE PAPEL . (Centro de arte M 11) (con dibujos originales e ineditos del artista en numerosas paginas + carta manuscrita original)

Ed. Centro de Arte M 11., Sevilla. 1974 - 18 x 24 cm. Peso 705 gr. The Works of John Gardner from the Personal Collection of Nicholas Delbanco

      - A collection of 23 works by John Gardner and associated items from the collection of his close friend and literary executor, the author Nicholas Delbanco. Gardner and acclaimed novelist and critic Delbanco first forged a friendship when Delbanco hosted Gardner during a reading tour at Bennington College in 1974. Delbanco ended up hiring Gardner for the English Department at the College. They and their families began a close professional and personal relationship in which each of the authors strove to critique the other's works in private and promote them in public, Gardner touting Delbanco as "one of the country's best novelists." Each acknowledged the contribution of the other in developing both their theories of literature and for specific elements of their respective works, whether it be Delbanco using Gardner's title *Stillness* for one of his novels or Gardner using Delbanco's writing to help clarify the husband-wife relationship in one of his own works. Delbanco's home and family became a refuge for both Gardner and his first wife during their messy divorce. Following Gardner's death in a 1982 motorcycle accident, Delbanco became Gardner's literary executor; editing and contributing an introduction to Gardner's posthumously published *Stillness and Shadows*. Delbanco's daughter Francesca, to whom the copy of *The King of Hummingbirds* is dedicated and some of the other books are inscribed (and who was formerly an occasional babysitting charge of Gardner's children), has herself published two well-received novels, *Ask Me Anything* and *Midnight in Manhattan*. A wonderful collection of interesting association copies that help detail an important literary friendship. Further details available upon request.
