The current catalog was produced for a Jung exhibition in Vienna in 1976; it includes about a dozen photographs from his FSA period, a few images from his Harper's Ferry series, and a number of later works.

        Neruda: entierro y testamento

      "In September 1973, Fina Torres, a photojournalist active in Venezuela at that time, was in Santiago during the coup that overthrew the government of the Unidad Popular. She photographed the damage done by the artillery to the facade of the Palacio de la Moneda, the armed soldiers in the streets, and other unsettling scenes of everyday life at the time: the cleaning of painted slogans from the walls, people lining up to buy food, the surveillance of the embassies, and the anguished seriousness of people waiting outside the morgue. Photographs of similar scenes can be found in the photobook Chili September 1973 by Koen Wessing, one of whose images is virtually identical to another taken by Torres. Both photographed a dark-haired girl standing at the door of the nourgue and showing the ID photo of a soldier. Torres decided to repeat the image to show more clearly the features of the young man who had disappeared, and Wessing did the same. Ten days after the coup, the poet Pablo Neruda died in a clinic in Santiago. Torres photographed the funeral procession, which also laid to rest the Unidad Popular and a whole era of leftist aspirations. The procession turned into a demonstration, in spite of the menacing presence of numerous armed soldiers. Fina Torres left a testimony of the vigil held around the dead body of Neruda. As she racalls, she was "the only photographer in the writer's residence on the day of his death." The house had been entered and sacked by the soldiers, an event almost prophesied in the lines "Traitor / generals: / behold my dead house" from España en el Corazon. The photos show empty shelves, ashes from the auto-da-fé, open closets, flooded rooms, and other signs of plunder and destruction - images of the desolation that the deceased poet's relatives, also captured by Torres' camera, seem not to notice"Horacio Fernandez in The Latin American Photobook, p 102.Text in Spanish: Sarmiento Alvaro. 47 BW ills by Torres Fina cm 14x19; pp. 152; paperback in fine condition. Spine a little cocked but an excellent copy in the very slightly faded dust jacket. First US Edition, First Printing. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "To Pat & Vidia You brought this upon yourself With love Paul July 1973". The recipients were V. S. Naipaul and his wife. Naipaul was Theroux's key literary association. Theroux and Naipaul met in East Africa in 1966. Naipaul was the senior and more successful of the two and made a lasting literary impact on Theroux who published in 1972 what was to be the first full-length study of his friend. Their friendship was often troubled but lasted for some 30 years before ending around the time of Pat Naipaul's death. The acrimonious break would lead directly to Theroux's harsh biography of Pat and Vidia Naipaul, "Sir Vidia's Shadow". Nonetheless it remains difficult to overstate the huge influence Naipaul had upon Theroux and therefore the resonance of this association copy.

A review copy of Thompson's third book and the second of his "Fear & Loathing" accounts, in which Thompson covers the Nixon/McGovern race for the Presidency, bringing to the campaign a sense of humor and horror that is simultaneously both off-the-wall and entirely appropriate to its subject. Author photo, five pages of publicity material, review slip (which also states that the frequent faintness of the type will be corrected in the first edition), and a McGovern promissory note laid in. In the promotional material the publisher describes this book as "the last volume in a strange trilogy that began with Hell's Angels... and continued through Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," the only time we have heard of these three books being explicitly described as a trilogy. This copy is signed by Ralph Steadman and Kurt Vonnegut. Steadman, who contributed illustrations to the book, has added devil's horns, a jester's cap, and a cigarette holder to the title page illustration and has written "Part Devil, Part Jester," dating his signature on August 20, 2005 at Owl Farm, Woody Creek, the day of Hunter Thompson's memorial blastoff. Vonnegut has written, on July 28 of that year: "Hunter Thompson is the most creatively crazy of the New Journalists. His ideas are brilliant, and honorable and valuable -- the literary equivalent of cubism. All rules are broken." In addition to his signature, Vonnegut has added a signed self-caricature. Fine in a near fine, presumed first issue, price-clipped dust jacket with slight edge wear, housed in a custom clamshell case. The bibliographic history of this title is unusual, and this advance copy provides some clues to a number of the questions that surround it. In particular, the price-clipped jacket is telling: originally the price of the book was to be $7.95, as is indicated on the review slip, but the price was lowered prior to publication so that the first copies issued to the trade had a $6.95 price. The price was later raised back to $7.95. As the publisher indicates, early copies of the book were printed poorly, and the printing was to be improved upon actual publication. Straight Arrow Press was the newly created publishing arm of Rolling Stone magazine, which was still a small counterculture journal at the time, and the vagaries of the publication process were apparently still new to them. A beautiful copy of an early issue of this book, which survived to be annotated at the end of the story, Thompson's blastoff. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        An Original Sketchbook of Special Importance to the Artist With 17 Finished, 270 x 210 mm Mixed Media Drawings of High Quality, Each Executed on 1 Side of a Sheet Over the 10 year period Between 1964 and 1973.

      These are deeply felt and original works that display a mastery of the medium and offer a pictorial record of the soul of the artist. The extraordinary sketchbook ends with 2 rhapsodic, abstract, 3-color gouaches that are both the summation of a lifetime of making art and a leap forward. ARTIST DOCUMENTATION: Simone Schmidt has documented 15 of the 17 works; 2 are signed & dated and with the landscapes located; 11 have the scenes located and are dated; 2 just with dates. While there isn't artist documentation for the final 2 works, they can reliably be dated to 1973. The sketchbook is dated 1962-1973 in pencil in the artist's hand on the upper cover but the works were executed in clusters at 3-4 year intervals with 1964 (8 works), 1968 (3 works), 1970 (3 works) and 1973 (1 work-and the 2 undated works). DETAIL: Confirmed complete. Sheets: excellent: a few with very lightly bent tips or other trace edgewear. Binding: Very Good: last hole (of 35) on the spiral binding cleanly split. Covers: some edgewear, and scattered spots or stains: they don't continue in. SIZE: 21 x 27 cm or 8.5 x 10.5 inches. SUMMARY: 17 full-page drawings, principally of rural landscapes in Belgium, 4 with color, executed in charcoal & pencil (13), charcoal & pastel (2), and charcoal & gouache (2), Ten are oriented to the long side of the sheet, seven to the short side. SELECTED DRAWINGS DESCRIBED: 5. (1964), pencil & charcoal, oriented towards the vertical: A superb and highly original composition from which emanates a deep wellspring of feeling not often found in modern European art. The landscape depicts houses in a dark foreground set off characteristically against a light, indeterminate background. The ground is imbued with indefinable energies and surfaces veering off in ways that seem inevitable but impossible to define. 6. (1964), charcoal & pencil, oriented towards the vertical: A highly original work, seemingly austere and casual in the making but created out of deep feeling and a mastery of the medium. A mysterious close-in portrait of bare trees, branches and trunks in early spring, the circulatory system of the unseen but apprehended sun. 9. (1968), pastel & charcoal in 8 colors, oriented towards the vertical: A austerely rendered, superb and original interior view, a room opening to a small balcony, and beyond, a mysterious tree, and beyond that, an indeterminate, enveloping energy. The room is charged with vertical lines that are as much space as structure. 11. (1968), charcoal & pencil, oriented towards the vertical: A landscape that is a recognizable pattern of hills, trees, homes, cows and vegetation but is also something largely unrecognizable, unknowable, and alive. A highly original drawing that strikes out against the idea of a placid, well-ordered countryside and exploits every aspect of the charcoal medium to create a palpable sense of wonder and a living, evolving expanse. 13. (1970), pencil & charcoal: A superb and original, mystical representation of a high hill view to low hills and lowlands below and beyond, and beyond all, the contrails of the sun and the sky. All become skin of the sun. 14. (1970), charcoal & pencil: A remarkable, deeply felt rendering of a house by a waterway with trees and arboreal masses rising into the hills and toward heights intimated, but not seen. The trees in the foreground are portrayed with an exceptional variety of applications of stroke, shading and texture that inexplicably grow, merge and separate to become charged portraits of mass and light, visual representations of the life force itself. 15. (1973), charcoal: A remarkable and virtuosic use of the charcoal medium showing a small stand of forest trees and brush at the edge of a woodland, and beyond, a series of escarpments. 16. In particular, the price-clipped jacket is telling: originally the price of the book was to be $7.95, as is indicated on the review slip, but the price was lowered prior to publication so that the first copies issued to the trade had a $6.95 price. The price was later raised back to $7.95. As the publisher indicates, early copies of the book were printed poorly, and the printing was to be improved upon actual publication. Straight Arrow Press was the newly created publishing arm of Rolling Stone magazine, which was still a small counterculture journal at the time, and the vagaries of the publication process were apparently still new to them. A beautiful copy of an early issue of this book, which survived to be annotated at the end of the story, Thompson's blastoff. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        PICTURE BOOK II 32 Original Lithographs and Captions (ALL Signed in Pencil)

      Los Angeles, California: Zeitlin & Ver Brugge, 1973. Tan wrappers, black lettering on spine and front, illustration on front which is an enlarged reverse of the monochromatic title page illustraton, unpaginated, with 32 original stone lithographs, publ date: May 10, 1973. Limited Edition of 1000 numbered and signed copies. This copy is Hors Commerce*. It is from the estate of Jack Lord**. All 32 of the original stone lithographs within are signed in pencil by the artist, as a personal favor to his friend, Mr. Lord -- in addition to his signature with inscription on the colophon page: "Hors Commerce / Jack Lord's own. With thanks for / his invaluable help. / ME KE ALOHA PUMEHANA A PAU / Jean Charlot" -- followed by the signature and inscription of the lithographer, "Lynton R. Kistler / with appreciation to Mr. Lord." The small monochromatic drawing (brown) on the title page is also signed in pencil. In front are laid-in two letters from the artist to Mr. Lord, and each is signed by Mr. Charlot. In the first letter, dated 2-28-1962 (11 years prior to eventual publication), Mr. Charlot indicates "I shall sign the prints for you." In the second letter, dated 8-27-73 (3 months after publication, Mr. Charlot indicates some annoyance at signing [all of the] individual prints! An autographed 8 x 10 color photo of Mr. Lord is also laid-in. Inserted in the slip case*** with the book is a 4 x 9 business envelope containing the following items of provenance: a signed 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 color photo of Mr. Lord, a cancelled check for a small amount on the account of Jack Lord and Marie Lord drawn on the Bank of Hawaii signed by Mr. Lord, a letter from the First Hawaiian Bank, personal trust dept., attesting that the book was the personal property of Mr. & Mrs. Lord, the PayPal receipt from the previous owner as high bidder in the estate liquidation auction, August, 2007. The book spine appears lightly sunned; scattered light foxing on edges with occasional very light foxing on some margins, slip-case has light sunning along one edge of the opening, book and slip-case show some minor evidence of handling, but over-all obviously well cared for. *Hors Commerce: Presentation copy, outside of the edition of 1000 which were only signed on the colophon page. **Jack Lord, actor, is best known for his starring role as Steve McGarrett in the American television program Hawaii Five-O from 1968 to 1980. ***The slip case is covered with a single large printed sheet of paper with two special monochromatic illustrations..
