Kesey's Garage Sale Signed twice by author + by Paul Krassner, Ken Babbs, Hugh Romney & Stewart Brand

Viking, New York 1973 - Package of both the 1st editions/1st printings of the hardback in dustjacket and soft-bound book; they were published simultaneously by Viking in 1973. The paperback is unread and in Fine condition. It has the same wraps design as the hardback's dustjacket, and the same text content. The Near Fine hardback first edition book is bound in blue cloth over boards with a blue paper spine panel, and the binding has white spine printing and a white design on the lower front board. The paper portion on the spine has light sunning to the edges and a couple of tiny scratches to the spine printing. The hardback's dustjacket has 1 very short completely closed, with no material loss, edge tear - still Fine condition - crisp, clean, unfaded, price intact. It (the hardback) is SIGNED twice on the half title page by Ken Kesey - first in a bold orange ink signed and inscribed "For Rick: Wot a long strange trip it still is, Ken Kesey 1984," and again in gold ink with just his signature, dated 1991. The hardback is also signed by 3 others important in Kesey's life on the half title page - Paul Krassner (co-founder in 1968 of the Yippies, Merry Prankster), Ken Babbs, dated 1994 (Ken Kesey's close friend and right-hand man - they were inseparable, Merry Prankster), and Hugh Romney (with maze-like doodle; he is the founder of the commune The Hog Farm, commonly known as Wavy Gravy). It is also signed on the next page by Stewart Brand, dated 15 Oct 90 (Merry Prankster, developer of the Whole Earth Catalog, old friend of Ken Kesey, and a futurist). The book contains "Who Flew Over What?," an essay about Kesey writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with Kesey's drawings of its characters, plus "Over the Border," a screenplay for the mind written in collaboration with Kesey's Merry Prankster friends in 1965-66, plus miscellaneous uncollected writings and interviews. Contributors include Arthur Miller (Introduction), Paul Foster, Kathi Wagner, Ken Babbs, Paul Krassner (twice), Ron Bevirt and the Whole Earth Catalog crew, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Hugh Romney, and Laurence Gonzales. Both books have 238 pages. The soft-bound copy is 10-7/8" x 8-3/8", slightly smaller than the hardback's 11-1/8" x 8-7/8". What a great collection of signatures of people prominent during the hippie era! (Note that the soft-bound book has a different SBN: 670003468.) ; 11-1/8" x 8-7/8"; 238 pages; Signed by Author HB: 670412686 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

If I Die in a Combat Zone [Inscribed Association Copy]

(n.p.): Delacorte Press. (1973). His first book, inscribed by the author to a high school classmate, debate partner, and neighbor: "To Jim,/ Best wishes -- / memories of old Worthington Sr. High!!/ Regards/ Tim." Rebound in black leather with gold stamping on spine. Slightly cocked; foxing to page edges; near fine. A highly praised memoir of the Vietnam war in which O'Brien uses some of the techniques of fiction to convey the experience of Vietnam from the grunt's perspective with immediacy and power. O'Brien would have been out of "old Worthington Sr. High" for about a decade when this book was published. An important first book; a high spot of Vietnam War literature; and a nice personal inscription. . First Edition. Hardcover.

[Manuscript]: In This Corner: 40 Boxing Titleholders Tell Their Own Stories. [Published title]: In This Corner: Forty World Champions Tell Their Stories

New York: Simon & Schuster. (1973). First. Bound manuscript. Introduction by Muhammad Ali. Quarto. Unpaginated. Typed carbon copies on pink and yellow carbon paper. Contemporary full cloth stamped in gilt with the title and author and: "Original Manuscript. March 16, 1973. To Sally... With Love." Dampstain mostly visible only on the front fly, a single word also on the front fly, else very good or better. Inscribed on the title page at a later date: "To Joe McMahon from Muhammad Ali 6-4-89." The carbon manuscript displays corrections in type and some penciled corrections, including the addition of Sugar Ray Robinson to the contents and a typed-in addition of Jose Torres. A cursory comparison to the printed book reveals a multitude of changes from this manuscript version. Interviews with Jack Dempsey, Mickey Walker, Pete Herman, Gunboat Smith, Fidel LaBarba, Tommy Loughran, Jack Sharkey, Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jose Torres, Emile Griffith, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore, and several others. The recipient of the book was Sally Drell, who the author referred to in the acknowledgments: "And finally my thanks to Sally Drell, for coming into my life... and for bringing with her the title for this book." Joe McMahon is presumably a collector who sought out Ali at a later date. Regarded by many to be among the best books on boxing, this is a unique copy. .

PINBALL MACHINE CAPER [Cover Title] / DEATH & THE NICKEL CIGAR [Title Page]

New York: Richard C. Higgins and The Rembrandt Players, 1973. Very good. 4to. Red brad-bound cardboard covers. Wear to yapp edge. Faint toning internally. Near fine overall. An original script of a play from the editor and publisher of Something Else Press. Described by the Fluxus writer as "a lickety split mystery,” DEATH & THE NICKEL CIGAR is a philosophical, Dada-esque/Theatre of the Absurd-inspired production, but otherwise remains a rather elusive work in the Higgins oeuvre. DICK HIGGINS: A Bio/Bibliography(Threadneedle Editions, 1979) lists the title under 1972 as an "ephemeral publication," but provides no details. And Richard Kostelanetz (DICTIONARY OF THE AVANT GARDE pp. 100-101) mentions the work (by title only) as representative of one of Higgins' "five methods" - "Expressionism" ("reflects personality or personal experience"), but again provides no elaboration. It does not appear to have ever been officially published and it is unclear if the work was even ever performed. The title page directs inquiries to Jerry Benjamin, performance artist and poet, who often directed in the experimental theater community (including other works of Higgins'). OCLC located seven copies of the script. A scarce and curious work from this prolific Fluxus figure.

IF I DIE IN A COMBAT ZONE

New York: Delacorte Press, (1973). First Edition. hardcover. Typical but in this case barely noticeable sunning to the very edges of the boards; unknown name, address, and date on the front pastedown completely covered by the inside flap of the dustwrapper. The date "March 1973" would make this a very early copy of the first edition as the publication date for this title was announced as 7 May 1973. The dustwrapper is complete but for a very tiny chip at the top front corner. The only other defects to the dustwrapper are mild wear to the head of the spine and a vertical crease down the inside front flap. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. A very attractive copy. O'Brien's first book, rather uncommon in the first printing, SIGNED by the author on the title page.

        The Complete Greed

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc.,, 1973. A reconstruction of the film in 348 still photos following the original screenplay. Plus 52 production stills. Compiled and Annotated with a Foreword by Herman G. Weinberg. Quarto. Printed card wrappers, as issued. Portrait frontispiece, and numerous black and white photographs in the text throughout. Extremities rubbed, creases to spine and front wrapper, some light marks, internally clean. A very good copy. Presentation copy inscribed by Paul McCartney of the first paperback edition (originally published in the preceding year by Arno Press) of the book that reconstructed from film stills Erich von Stroheim's infamously butchered and lost ten hour magnum opus (described in such terms as the "Holy Grail" and the "Magna Carta" of film) that was only ever shown as the two-and-a-half hour film Greed in 1924. The inscription, on the half-title, is from Paul McCartney to Bernard Herrmann, "To Benny from Paul - you'll have to supply the score for yourself - I'm sure you'll have no trouble. I hope we can work together again." Herrmann was a classical musician who also pioneered into electronic music; the Beatles reputedly based the strings in Eleanor Rigby on Herrmann's famous strings for Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho. Herrmann met and befriended McCartney, and helped him with with the scoring of The Family Way. This copy includes, laid in, a lengthy contemporary review of the book clipped from a magazine.
