Gravity's Rainbow

NY: Viking. (1973). The uncorrected proof copy of Pynchon's landmark third novel, winner of the National Book Award as well as the William Dean Howells Medal for the best work of fiction by an American over a five-year span. Gravity's Rainbow became the benchmark for postmodern American fiction upon publication and secured its mysterious and reclusive author's place in the postwar American literary pantheon. It is also widely considered the culminating novel of the Sixties, the one which encapsulates and sums up the postwar events that resulted in the countercultural rejection of mainstream society and the quest for a plausible alternative view not only of contemporary society but of humanity itself. Pynchon's identity and whereabouts have consistently remained mysterious, and his publications have increasingly tended to be well-guarded secrets up to the moment of publication. For a number of years it was reported that no proofs of Gravity's Rainbow had been done, with Viking itself reportedly having confirmed that; however, in the past decades a dozen or so examples of this massive (760 pages) proof have shown up on the market. Tiny tear near the spine base; spine a bit sunned, creased and handled; still a very good copy in wrappers. . First Edition. Softcover.

        Gravity's Rainbow

New York: The Viking Press 1973 - First edition, first printing. A fine copy with slight wear to the spine head, front panel decorated with an arch in blind tooling, else without blemish, in a bright and unclipped dust jacket, with only some very minor offsetting to the top edges of the flaps, overall a very attractive, superb copy without any of the usual spine fading. After establishing himself as a great American writer in the early 1960s, Thomas Pynchon waited seven years after his second novel to publish his third novel, Gravity's Rainbow, which was received with much anticipation. A dense and complex novel, Gravity's Rainbow is set in Europe in the later years of World War II and utilizes many of the same characters and themes of his first novel, V. In this National Book Award winning text, Pynchon explores the romantic and pragmatic aspects of paranoia and death in a depressing yet brilliant work of literature. This contradiction is epitomized in Gravity Rainbow's nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which it nearly won until the committee dismissed the work for vulgar subject matter. LOOKING AT PHOTOGRAPHS: 100 PICTURES FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

New York City, NY: Museum Of Modern Art/New York Graphic Society Limited, 1973. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Museum Of Modern Art/New York Graphic Society Limited, 1973. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 215 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs with accompanying text. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with the Softcover Edition that was published simultaneously with it. Precedes all other subsequent editions. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by MOMA: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with gray titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of photography. Text by John Szarkowski. Printed in duotone and sepia on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the single most important and influential critical appreciation of photographs by its single greatest champion. The format is simplicity itself: Each photograph is presented on the right-hand side with Szarkowski's page-long commentary on the opposite page. The Curator and Director Emeritus of the Photography Department of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), John Szarkowski wielded his enormous influence, quietly and positively, to disseminate the work of the greatest photographers (in his considered opinion) and to elevate previously unrecognized artists to canonical status (among them, Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus, and William Eggleston). "Explores the evolution of the photographic medium using specific examples to illustrate its development. In concise analyses, Szarkowski investigates the aesthetic, formal, social, and historical issues. This archive contains a vast range of works from familiar and not-so-familiar photographers. Included are some of the most recognizable pictures of the past 150 years by acknowledged Masters such as Adamson, Cameron, Stieglitz, Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Cunningham, Arbus, and Frank" (Publisher's blurb). Szarkowski's enduring influence is evident to this day: Through his tireless lifelong efforts, the MOMA's Permanent Collection remains the most valuable in the world. An absolute "must-have" title for John Szarkowski and photography book collectors. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. As far as we know, the toning on the DJ spine is a publisher's flaw that is found in every copy of the book and does not detract from this particular copy's otherwise fine, unread condition. Most copies available online are either subsequent printings or have major flaws. A rare copy thus. 100 duotone and sepia plates. John Szarkowski's "Looking At Photographs" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographic figures of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOHN SZARKOWSKI TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0870705148.

        Suburbia

San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1973. First edition. Softcover. His now classic first book. A relatively early photographic attempt to pull back the curtain on suburban life. Owens images are paired with brief captions from his subjects to ultimately form an ironic look at how suburban life might not be so wonderful. A clean very near fine copy in illustrated wrappers with some minor rubbing to the front and rear panel. (Parr & Badger v2, 24; Roth 224-225)
