        Crash

London: Jonathan Cape, 1973. London: Jonathan Cape. PUBLISHING DETAILS: First edition of Ballard's cult novel, published by Jonathan Cape of London in 1973. 224 pages. Size; 20 x 13 cms (8" x 5"). Weight; 340g (12 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate the book and dustjacket as very good. The book is a library rebind in green simulated leather, with clean, sound covers (see photo). The binding remains tight and secure throughout. The text is mostly clean and bright but there are marks to a few pages. There are library stamps to the copyright and last pages but no labels. There is a new front endpaper. The original dustjacket is entire and clean but with tape residue marks to the inside and on the turn-in flaps and just slightly faded to the spine. It is now protected in a clear, removable sleeve. All in all, a tidy copy of this rare and much sought after first edition that looks very well in its original dustjacket, greatly reduced to allow for the rebinding. THE NOVEL: Crash is a story about symphorophilia or car-crash sexual fetishism: its protagonists become sexually aroused by staging and participating in real car-crashes. The story is told through the eyes of narrator James Ballard, named after the author himself, but it centers on the sinister figure of Dr. Robert Vaughan, a "former TV-scientist, turned nightmare angel of the expressways". Ballard meets Vaughan after being involved in a car accident himself near London Airport. Gathering around Vaughan is a group of alienated people, all of them former crash-victims, who follow him in his pursuit to re-enact the crashes of celebrities, and experience what the narrator calls "a new sexuality, born from a perverse technology". Vaughan's ultimate fantasy is to die in a head-on collision with movie star Elizabeth Taylor. It was a highly controversial novel: famously one publisher's reader returned the verdict "This author is beyond psychiatric help. Do Not Publish!" The novel was made into a movie of the same name in 1996 by David Cronenberg. An earlier, apparently unauthorized adaptation called Nightmare Angel was filmed in 1986 by Susan Emerling and Zoe Beloff. (Source: Wikipedia) . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1973. 20x13 Cms (8" x 5").

        Sir Maximus Mouse

, 1973. 1973. The Cheese Tycoon At Home in the Cheddar BankOriginal Art From "The Butterfly Ball"ALDRIDGE, Alan. Sir Maximus Mouse. Original Art, Plate No. 19 from The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast. N.p., 1973. 25 x 19 1/4 inches (64 x 49 cm) matted and glassed in frame; oval image 18 x 12 1/2 inches (46 x 31.5 cm). An original airbrushed acrylic painting illustrating a character from artist Alan Aldridge's modern children's classic, The Butterfly Ball and The Grasshopper's Feast, with verses by William Plomer and nature notes by Richard Fitter, originally published in London by Jonathan Cape, 1973. It is one of twenty-eight illustrations created for the book.Accompanied by a first edition copy of the book. That huge new block, in EC4,Of the Cheddar Bank they built last JuneHas a secret fat, on the fourteenth floor,For Sir Maximus Mouse, the Cheese Tycoon. There he sits in his cozy roomWith a ticker-tape, in view of St. Paul'sTo watch how the market rises and falls. His whiskers twitch at the hint of a broom,His whiskers droop at the hint of a slump in hisHundred-and-twenty super-companies.As a cat will watch a mouse, he staresAt the ups and downs of shocks and shares,A prince among mice and millionaires."Knock, knock," says the grandfather clock,"Money's not all, money's not all -He has quite forgotten the Butterfly Ball!"Alan Aldridge (b. 1943) is an English artist, graphic designer and illustrator. Aldridge first worked as an illustrator at The Sunday Times Magazine. After executing some freelance book covers, he became the art director for Penguin Books. In 1968 he established his own graphic-design firm, INK, which created imagery for the Beatles and their Apple Corps. He was responsible for a great many album covers during the 1960s and 1970s, influencing the graphic style of the period. His work was characterized by flowing, cartoon-like designs with soft airbrushing. He is possibly best known for the children's illustrated book, The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper Feast, a series of illustrations of anthropomorphic insects and other creatures, which he created in collaboration with William Plomer. It was based on William Roscoe's poem of the same name but was motivated by John Tenniel's assertion to Lewis Carroll it was impossible to draw a wasp in a wig. Aldridge also created the artwork for Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975).

ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT "ARGOS" with corrected typescript and covering letter

. An eight page working draft for an anthropomorphic children's story. Written on both sides of four foolscap leaves of exercise paper (approx. 4000 words), with copious deletions, additions and corrections. With an initial typescript of the same story on six foolscap pages with corrections by the author in pen throughout. Also a typed letter to Selina Hastings, donating the manuscripts to the Royal Literary Society, and explaining a little about the writing of the story. Argos plays a peripheral part in Homer's Odyssey. He was Odysseus's faithful dog, who waited, neglected, for his master's return, and is the first to recognise the disguised Odysseus. Having done so, he dies. "In the old days he used to be taken out by the young men when they went hunting wild goats, or deer, or hares, but now that his master was gone he was lying neglected on the heaps of mule and cow dung that lay in front of the stable doors till the men should come and draw it away to manure the great close; and he was full of fleas. As soon as he saw Odysseus standing there, he dropped his ears and wagged his tail, but he could not get close up to his master... Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had seen his master once more after twenty years" - The Odyssey (Book 17) "most people don't know about Odysseus's dog [Argos] in "The Odyssey", and how he recognised his master when he turned up in disguise after being away for twenty years" explains Adams in his covering letter with this manuscript story. Adams had been asked by The Guardian to write a new short story for an anthology of stories by winners of The Guardian Children's Fiction Award (which Adams won in 1973 with Watership Down). In his story Adams develops the character of Argos, toward the end of his life, reminiscing to a passing cat, his version of Odysseus's departure and his adventures with Telemachus, Odysseus's son, ending with Argos's disbelief and excitement as he picks up the scent of his returning master. Throughout the holograph manuscript there are corrections, mainly stylistic changes, often making the turn of phrase more contemporary or colloquial, but also adding and deleting phrases in the general reworking of the story. As a whole the manuscript demonstrates the staged construction of a children's story in Adams's distinctive style, made famous by his other works for children such as Watership Down.

Un Voyage en Mer du Nord

Brussels: Hossmann (in association with Petersburg Press, London) 1973 - This book portrays two voyages on the North Sea, one with photographs of an oil painting showing a square rigged vessel returning to port and the other with a photograph of a modern day sloop running before the wind under spinnaker and mainsail. It was made by Broodthaers in conjunction with a 16mm film of still images similar to those in the book and bearing the same title. In the press release accompanying the book and film, Broodthaers explained the combined work in this way: "A book suggesting image as function. A book suggesting the text as function. More than a theory, the subject of this proposition reflects a simple image of the frustration that rules the social condition of today. . . . Perhaps I should add that the subject shines." His explanation in the book itself is more understandable: ?It is up to the attentive reader to find out what devilish motive inspired this book?s publication.? The oil painting of the square rigger was purchased by Broodthaers at a Paris flea market and it made several appearances in his work. The photograph of the modern sloop was taken by Broodthaers himself. In the book and in the film details of the oil painting are examined closely by the camera moving towards the painting and then withdrawing, but always in sharp focus. This mixing of media, viz., film, printing, painting, and still photography, became an underlying basis for Rosalind Krauss? eponymous book "A Voyage on the North Sea: Art in the Age of the Post-Medium Condition," where she argued that art in the 1970s was made without regard to the constraints of a particular medium. This copy of the book is from the Brussels edition by Hossmann in association with the Petersburg Press in London, and is part of an edition that does not include the 16mm film. The text is in French. Two other editions were published: one in English at the Petersburg Press in London and one in German at the Verlag DuMont Schaberg in Cologne. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        "Wittgensteinomania". Eigenhändiges Manuskript.

[London, wohl Mai 1973].. 5 SS. auf 5 Bll. sowie tlw. beschriebene Verso-Seiten. Folio. Beiliegend ein ms. Begleitbrief mit eh. U. (ebd., 13. II. 1974) samt hinzugehörigem ms. adr. Kuvert.. An seinen Verleger Robert Calmann-Levy (1899-1982) in Paris, dem er das Manuskript seiner kürzlich erschienenen Rezension für dessen Autographensammlung schickt: "Enclosed a recent manuscript for your collection. It is a review of a book on Wittgenstein, published by the Observer and included in 'The Heel of Achilles', where you will find all the details. I do hope the page proofs have reached you at long last (but they may have been addressed to Alain or just to the firm and not to you personally). | Amities | Koestler". - "Wittgensteinomania" ist Koestlers Rezension von Alan Janiks und Stephen Toulmins Buch "Wittgenstein's Vienna", die am 3. VI. 1973 im "Observer" erschienen war: "[...] The Tractatus became one of the most influential philosophical works of our century, the source of an esoteric cult, the dark oracle from which such diverse schools as Logical Positivism, the Vienna Circle and the Linguistic Philosophers at Oxford drew their inspiration. But unavoidably - as naive non-philosophers would expect - their interpretation of Wittgenstein's message was based on what he had written, and not on that second part which he had not written. And as far as the written text goes, the message could be summed up in a simple slogan: 'metaphysi[ci]ans shut your trap' [...]". - Mit zahlreichen Streichungen, Einschüben und Korrekturen; das Mskpt. im linken Rand gelocht (keine Textberührung), der Brief mit gepr. Adresse.

Les Reconnaissances. Traduit de L'Anglais par Jean Lambert.

Paris, Gallimard, 1973.. Premiere Edition. 8°. 990 pages. Broche. 2 volumes. Tres bon etat. / First Edition in French. Excellent condition. Name on titlepage.. ____________________________________ William Thomas Gaddis, Jr. (December 29, 1922 - December 16, 1998) was an American novelist. The first and longest of his five novels, The Recognitions, was named one of TIME magazine's 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005 and two others won the annual U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. A collection of his essays was published posthumously as The Rush for Second Place (2002). The Letters of William Gaddis was published by Dalkey Archive Press in February 2013. Gaddis is one of the first and most important American postmodern writers. Because of their complexity and inventiveness in structure and style, his novels are often challenging to read; for example, his National Book Award winners J R and A Frolic of His Own are written almost entirely in unattributed dialogue and without much description, leaving the reader with only different characters' verbal tics, stock phrases and obsessions to identify who is speaking. Some readers find this a source of difficulty; others, finding his ability to make distinctive characterizations using only dialogue a virtuoso stylistic feat, find it a pleasure unique to his work. His books are also known for their extensive use of literary and cultural allusions, most of which are annotated in The Gaddis Annotations. (Wikipedia)
