        GRAVITY'S RAINBOW

New York: The Viking Press,. [1973]. Octavo,. cloth.. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with touch of wear at head and tail. of spine panel at folds and corner tips, minute nick at top edge of. front panel, and small closed tear at top edge of front flap.. Overall, an excellent copy. (#69427). First edition. The author's third novel. Only 4000 copies of this hardcover issue of the first printing were published. An exceptionally influential novel, winner of the William Dean Howells Medal (for the best work of fiction to appear in the U.S. over a five-year period), the National Book Award, and a 1973 Nebula Award nominee. "A sprawling slipstream novel about a World War II psychological warfare unit full of weird characters, one of whom seems to be determining the pattern of V-2 rocket attacks by his sexual activities but refuses to submit to study and possible control. Extraordinarily elaborate black comedy." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-885. "U.S. writer, all of whose works are fabulations which resemble SF under some interpretations, though the paranoia-wracked worlds his protagonists inhabit defeat any secure reading of the malign figurations of reality ... Enormous and complex, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW offers no repose for a secure reading, but the search for its main protagonist (whose sexual climaxes predict and attract rockets from the V-2s on) fabulously posits an sf world ... Pynchon's general concerns with entropy, paranoia and communication have had a fruitful effect on some sf writers." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 981. A Burgess 99 title. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 4A-213. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 915-20.

        Starseed

San Francisco: Level Press. (c. 1973). A "transmission" by Leary from Folsom Prison, timed with the arrival of the comet Kohoutek. This is a photocopy of nine pages of typewritten text on five stapled 8-1/2" x 11" pages. The last page also reproduces a hand-drawn yin-yang symbol with eight trigrams around it and reference to one of the hexagrams of the I Ching -- none of which appeared in the published version of this book, which was done by the Level Press and issued as a booklet; this version presumably preceded. According to Leary's bibliographer and the woman who typed Leary's manuscripts for him, including Starseed, this could have been made from Leary's own typescripts (she would have corrected the typos, she said) and issued in small numbers prior to the formal publication. A similar process took place for Neurologic, which was published in late 1973 but had a stapled, prepublication issue done in May of that year that the bibliographer called a "trial issue." Starseed was formally published in September of 1973, and this version -- if what the principals say is correct -- would likely have been done sometime around the time that the Neurologic "trial copy" was done (Neurologic was formally published slightly later in the year than the Level Press Starseed). In any case, an extremely scarce variant of one of Leary's scarcer books, unseen by the bibliographer or by Leary's typist. Near fine. First Edition.

        'Het zingend hart'.

Origineel typoscript. 27,4 x 21,5 cm. Zevenendertig bladen. Herhaaldelijk geniet en geplakt. Alleen recto.

        A Computer Perspective

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press,, 1973. Edited by Glen Fleck. Produced by Robert Staples. Introduction by I. Bernard Cohen. Quarto. Original half black cloth, titles to spine in silver, cream cloth sides, blue-gray endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. Just a little toning of the endpapers. An excellent, fresh copy in the dust jacket that is toned along the spine panel with a few nicks and short closed tears. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Charles Eames on the front free endpaper, "To Ben and Lois, with great admiration from Charles and Ray [additionally signed by Ray Eames], Jan – 1973". In addition to their more well-known furniture and architectural designs, the Eames also had an interest in industrial design. The present volume, which traces the development of information technology from Babbage's Analytical Engine to the commercial computers of the 1970s, was the companion book to an exhibition of the same title which the couple curated for IBM in 1971. A lovely copy of this fascinating and beautifully designed exhibition catalogue.

Collected fish papers of Pieter Bleeker. Collected and edited by W. H. Lamme. Volumes I-XIV (complete).

. The Hague, W. Junk, 1973-1979. In 14 volumes. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait, numerous text pages and plates. Uniform printed cloth.* The all-important complete reprint edition of all the original fish papers by this eminent ichthyologist, including an English translation of his autobiography, and a fascimile reprint of the auction catalogue of Bleeker's fabulous fish collection. Pieter Bleeker (1819-1878) was one of the most productive 19th century ichthyologists, identifying and describing nearly 2000 new fish species, and introducing more than 500 new genera. In Dean's "Bibliography of the fishes" the list of Bleeker's publication occupies more than 20 full pages; more than any other author. His main area of study was the so called Malayan Archipelago, including the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), now known to be a biological hot-spot. Bleeker's papers were published in many books and periodicals over a long period of time, and it is near-impossible to compile a complete set his writings. The publisher's price was Dfl. 3.000 (EUR 1300). A very good, clean, unmarked set. Dean I, pp. 118-138..

        History

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux (1973). First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Lowell to his first wife Jean Stafford: "For Jean with love from Cal / Robert Lowell." Lowell and Stafford had a tempestuous marriage that ended in 1948 but they remained friends. Stafford died in 1983 in Springs, New York, a small village next to East Hampton, in the house she had shared with her last husband, the New Yorker essayist A.J. Liebling. Her housekeeper inherited everything in the house, and sold the library the following year to the Argosy bookstore in New York City. Loosely inserted in this copy is a short typed letter by one of the proprietors of the Argosy, confirming this book's provenance.

[Manuscript]: In This Corner: 40 Boxing Titleholders Tell Their Own Stories. [Published title]: In This Corner: Forty World Champions Tell Their Stories

New York: Simon & Schuster. (1973). First. Bound manuscript. Introduction by Muhammad Ali. Quarto. Unpaginated. Typed carbon copies on pink and yellow carbon paper. Contemporary full cloth stamped in gilt with the title and author and: "Original Manuscript. March 16, 1973. To Sally... With Love." Dampstain mostly visible only on the front fly, a single word also on the front fly, else very good or better. Inscribed on the title page at a later date: "To Joe McMahon from Muhammad Ali 6-4-89." The carbon manuscript displays corrections in type and some penciled corrections, including the addition of Sugar Ray Robinson to the contents and a typed-in addition of Jose Torres. A cursory comparison to the printed book reveals a multitude of changes from this manuscript version. Interviews with Jack Dempsey, Mickey Walker, Pete Herman, Gunboat Smith, Fidel LaBarba, Tommy Loughran, Jack Sharkey, Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jose Torres, Emile Griffith, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore, and several others. The recipient of the book was Sally Drell, whom the author referred to in the acknowledgments: "And finally my thanks to Sally Drell, for coming into my life... and for bringing with her the title for this book." Joe McMahon is presumably a collector who sought out Ali at a later date. Regarded by many to be among the best books on boxing, this is a unique copy. .
