The Machados and Talamantes had already been given a Spanish concession to graze their cattle on this land in 1819.         Exterminator!

      Viking, NY 1973 - A presentation copy -- three quarter bound in leather with gilt stamping and inscribed by Burroughs to Bob Jackson, and with a printed "Greetings of the Season" slip laid in from the publisher. Fine. The Maynard and Miles bibliography indicates that Burroughs himself had such a copy in his own collection, and that the number of such copies was unknown. We can find no evidence of any other copies of this edition turning up for sale, and it is not impossible that this is the copy M&M noted: Burroughs gifted a number of books to Jackson, whom he viewed as having saved his papers from falling into obscurity when Roberto Altmann's plans for an arts center in Liechtenstein fell through. Burroughs' papers were to have been a centerpiece of the research collection of the institute and instead were left in their boxes, untouched and unseen by anyone for over a decade, until Jackson's purchase.         Awakenings

      London: Duckworth,, 1973. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Photographic frontispiece and plate. Blind stamped address to head of front free endpaper. Spine gently rolled, slight rubbing to spine ends; an excellent copy in the jacket with minor rubbing to edges. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Dorothy Miller, in gratitude, Oliver Sacks, Sept '74", with his address stamped in blind to the head of the leaf. Awakenings chronicles Sacks's efforts in the late 1960s to help patients at Beth Abraham Hospital in the Bronx, New York who had been victims of the "sleeping sickness" epidemic in the 1920s. He used as part of treatment the then-new drug L-DOPA, a precursor of medical dopamine, which is now regularly used in treatments for Parkinson's. The book inspired Harold Pinter's play, A Kind of Alaska, written in 1982 and was also made into the 1990 Oscar-nominated film, Awakenings starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.         The First Collected Works Centenary Limited Edition;

      London: Library of Imperial History in association with the Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd,, 1973–6. [together with:] The Collected Essays. Centenary Limited Edition. Together, 38 volumes, octavo. Original full vellum with 22-carat gold blocking, including titles to spines, armorial device to front boards and ruling to spines and front boards, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, printed on Archive Long-Life Text Paper. Housed in the original green leatherette slipcases stamped with the Churchill arms in gilt. Illustrations throughout, as plates and to the text. Typical natural variation to the tone of the vellum bindings; a couple of the slipcases a little rubbed at extremities. An excellent set. First complete collected edition, number 312 of 1,750 sets published. The Centenary Edition is the only full collected works of Winston Churchill, reproducing his 50 books in 34 volumes. "The specifications were titanic: five million words in 19,000 pages, weighing 19 lbs, taking up 4½ ft of shelf space. To achieve publication, 11 publishing houses in Great Britain, the United States and Canada released their individual copyrights in exchange for the promise that no other complete edition of Churchill works would be published until the expiration of international copyright in 2019" (Richard M. Langworth). The Library of Imperial History went bankrupt before the projected run of 3,000 sets could be completed, so "the print run never exceeded 2,000 copies and only 1,750 sets were ever published" (Cohen). This set is accompanied by the four-volume Centenary Limited Edition of Churchill's collected essays and journalistic writings, again intended to be limited to 3,000 sets, not always present, together with a publisher's prospectus for both the Collected Works and Collected Essays.

        Five Issues of Delcor Diamond

      Delaware Division of Adult Corrections, Smyrna, Delaward 1973 - Magazines. Illustrated stapled wrappers. Light wear at the edges, one copy with staple holes at the foredge and another lightly creases from being folded, still overall near fine. Group of five issues of prison periodicals issued by the Delaware Division of Adult Corrections from the early 1970s. The magazine was published by and for inmates as an opportunity for self-expression, discussion of public problems, and to foster understanding between inmates and the public. While each issue is largely filled with content solicited from and provided by prisoners, it appears to also contains some outside contributions from "interested individuals." The rear wrap of each issue includes blank lines for an address and a printed return address for mailing. Topics discussed in these issue include mandatory minimum sentences, vocation education, addiction, parole, sickle cell anemia, recreational sports, prison escape, and photos of an inmate variety show. OCLC locates one run at The University of Delaware.List if issues:Vol. 1, No. 2: February 1972Vol. 1, No. 3: March 1972Vol. 1, No. 5: May-June 1972Vol. 1, No. 7: September-October 1972Vol. 2, No. 1: January 1973.

        The First Collected Works. Centenary Limited Edition; [together with:] The Collected Essays. Centenary Limited Edition.

      London: Library of Imperial History in association with the Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd, 1973–6 - Together, 38 volumes, octavo. Typical natural variation to the tone of the vellum bindings; a couple of the slipcases a little rubbed at extremities. An excellent set. Illustrations throughout, as plates and to the text. Cohen AA1; Langworth ICS AA1; Woods p. 391.
