?Unless we want another dangerous inflationary spiral, we face a choice: either to hold the line on spending at the levels I have recommended, or to raise taxes.?

Typed Letter Signed ?RN? as President, 1 page, 6.75? x 9?. The White House, Washington, D.C., January 29, 1973. To Congressman C.W. (Bill) Young (R-Florida). Receipt stamping in upper right. Blind embossed with the presidential seal at top center. Fine condition. In full, ?As the House and Senate begin to consider the budget for the coming fiscal year, I thought you might like to see a copy of the radio speech I made Sunday before sending my annual budget message to the Congress. Unless we want another dangerous inflationary spiral, we face a choice: either to hold the line on spending at the levels I have recommended, or to raise taxes. My speech explains the principal reasons for my budget proposals, and I would appreciate your giving it your thoughtful consideration as you prepare for the debates which lie ahead of us ...?A copy of Pres. Nixon?s radio address on Sunday evening, January 28, 1973, is present. Not the copy sent to Young, included is ??The New Budget? Charting a New Era of Progress? online by Gerhard Peters and John T. Wooley, The American Presidency Project. Nixon?s address, in part, ?Good evening: At noon tomorrow, I will send to the Congress one of the most important documents I will sign as President--my budget proposals for the coming fiscal year. This budget will not require higher taxes. It will not drive prices higher. And it will give us the chance I spoke of in my Inaugural Address--to make our new era of peace a new era of progress ... In the campaign last fall, I promised I would not propose any new tax increases. By keeping a tight lid on spending, my new budget keeps that promise ... We can be thankful that, with the war in Vietnam now ended, this is a true peacetime budget in every sense of the word ...?Republican Charles William (Bill) Young (1930-2013) represented Florida in the House of Representatives from 1971 until his death in 2013. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions which nominated Nixon in 1968 and 1972, Ford in 1976, and Reagan in 1984. Young served as Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee for six years, during the last two years of the Bill Clinton presidency and G.W. Bush's first term as President, 1999-2005. At the time of his death, he was the longest serving Republican in Congress.

SOUTH OF NO NORTH - PRESENTATION COPY

Black Sparrow Press, Santa 1973 - Limited Issue, one of 300 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.54. Octavo; 3/4 powder gray paper, printed in 3 colors over black and red patterned cloth, with title label applied to spine; original acetate overlay; 189pp, [3]. Presentation copy, inscribed on the dedication page just three days after publication: "For Bill Whitaker / These stories were all paid for, long ago or sooner. I hope besides the blood this stuff puts in your coffee, you get some cream and laughter. O.K. / Charles Bukowski / 12-26-73;" small drawing of a smoking man beneath the inscription. Subtle forward lean, with a gentle tap to upper board edges and small stain to upper edge of text; "Compliments of the Publisher" slip laid in; Near Fine in a VG+ acetate overlay, with some shallow chipping to base of spine and a few small tears. Attractive copy of Bukowski's first collection of short fiction. This copy lengthily inscribed to William (Bill) J. Whitaker, who from ca.1970 until the press closed down in 2002 represented Black Sparrow as a traveling salesman on the eastern seaboard, going from bookstore to bookstore each season selling the latest titles from the press. While copies of the signed limited will periodically show up for sale, copies with contemporary inscriptions - particularly to someone with a close, long-standing connection to the press - are genuinely rare. Jerusalem Faces

1973. KOKOSCHKA, Oskar. Jerusalem Faces. Complete set of 6 original lithographs by Kokoschka. Atlas folio, loose as issued in original grey cloth-covered folio box, with original grey cardboard shipping container. Preserved in a second beige linen folding case. London: Marlborough Graphics and George Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1973.Copy No. 2 of 150, with each portrait signed by the artist in pencil. The portraits were created by the artist during his visit to Jerusalem in April, 1973. Kokoschka's bold strokes of light, line and shape dissolve facial features, producing "psychological portraits," in which the "soul" of the sitter was thought to be laid bare. He claimed that he captured "closed personalities, so full of tension" of his sitters. In the present series, Kokoschka's lines reluctantly converge into descriptions of people marked not only by tradition and history, but by the immediate social events of their time. The subjects are: Golda Meir, Dr. Shimon Agranat, President of the Israel Supreme-Court, His Beatitude Benedictos I, Greek-Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Moyshe Dayan, Minister of Defence, Sheik Mustafa Khalil El-Ansari, Chief Warden of the Mosque of Omar, and Teddy Kollek, Mayor of Jerusalem. The format of the lithographs is 650 x 500 mm (i.e. 25.5 x 19.75 inches). They were printed from the stone on handmade Japan paper by the Graphische Anstalt J.E. Wolfensberger AG, Zurich. In pristine condition.

        Saint Jack.

Houghton, Mifflin Company, Boston, 1973 - Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to upper board and spine in red and blue, top edge stained pink, blue endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine a little cocked but an excellent copy in the very slightly faded dust jacket. First US Edition, First Printing. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "To Pat & Vidia You brought this upon yourself With love Paul July 1973". The recipients were V. S. Naipaul and his wife. Naipaul was Theroux's key literary association. Theroux and Naipaul met in East Africa in 1966. Naipaul was the senior and more successful of the two and made a lasting literary impact on Theroux who published in 1972 what was to be the first full-length study of his friend. Their friendship was often troubled but lasted for some 30 years before ending around the time of Pat Naipaul's death. The acrimonious break would lead directly to Theroux's harsh biography of Pat and Vidia Naipaul, "Sir Vidia's Shadow". Nonetheless it remains difficult to overstate the huge influence Naipaul had upon Theroux and therefore the resonance of this association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Suburbia

San Francisco: Straight Arrow, 1973. Prima edizione (First edition, first printing). broch. Ottimo (Fine). 8vo.
