        THE BANANA BOOK

Siamese Banana New York: Siamese Banana, 1972. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. 4to. Side-stapled mimeograph. Fine but for mild damp-stain (which a colleague humorously referred to as "authentic New York School soilage") to lower edge of - mainly - front cover; traces of same to rear cover and bottom edge, close inspection only. Else sharp and bright. First edition, one of 26 lettered copies signed by Brainard. The "A" copy. Typical Brainard: gossipy, funny, and erotic. Filled with New York School in-jokes and sexually graphic images. There was an unsigned edition (no apparent priority), which strangely seems more uncommon than the signed. OCLC notes more than a third of this edition already behind institutional walls. Arguably the most desirable copy of an increasingly scarce Brainard title.

        8 x 10 Art Portfolio [14 Sheets]

[New York: Jeanie Black and Ely Raman] (1970-1972). Artist publication. A collection of 14 sheets, all fine, housed in a toned folder splitting at several of the folds, very good. A portfolio magazine created by photographer Jeanie Black and Fluxus artist Ely Raman, published over nine issues between 1970-1972. This issue includes a "wallpaper piece" by Black, a "stamp drawing" by Raman, six penciled drawings from Mel Perkarsky's Landscape series, an onionskin tracing by Wertheim, a double-sided "Real Money" piece from Dana W. Atchley, and a "found art" photo of two mannequins. Asked many years later about the publication, Raman commented: "I realize that our historical consciousness (or self-consciousness?) was notably absent. The issues were not numbered or dated, the contributions often not properly identified (or footnoted) and we did not include serious (academic) verbiage identifying what we were doing in the context of art. Too busy making art to write or talk about it." The lack of documentation, the generic title, and the seeming randomness of each issue makes finding other copies of the publication difficult. While there are several sets at institutions, individual issues are quite scarce in the trade.

        The Optimist's Daughter

NY: Random House. (1972). Welty's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Inscribed by Tennessee Williams to Ruth [Ford]: "For Ruth, some lovely southern prose, Love, Tennessee a bientot [so long]." In 1972, Williams' play Small Craft Warnings was running Off Broadway. Ford, the film and stage actress, who had been born in Mississippi, was known for the gatherings she hosted at her apartment at the Dakota building in Manhattan: Williams met Edward Albee at one such event in 1972, albeit prior to the publication of this title. A nice association copy, and in particular a nice Southern association copy: Ford was a longtime friend of William Faulkner and starred in the Broadway adaptation of his only play, Requiem for a Nun. Tennessee Williams was, of course, one of the great American playwrights but also, most especially, a Southern playwright whose work helped to define the literature of the region. Fine in a very near fine, very slightly dusty jacket. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Report on Planet Three and Other Speculations

Victor Gollancz London: Victor Gollancz. 1972. First. First edition. Ownership signature of Ian Macauley, fine in a slightly spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Receipt from the publisher laid in. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Macauley; "To Ian, who is welcome to steal any of it. Arthur. Lo. Aug 72." Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, mainly speculations on space, and some reprints of earlier essays. Macauley has made a pen emendation in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. .

TAILS OF BRAVE ULYSSES [cover title]

Madison WI: Shenanigan Press Ltd and the Omar Space Corp Ltd. 1972. [Madison, WI: Shenanigan Press Ltd and the Omar Space Corp, Ltd., 1972].. Portfolio of ten mixed media prints (20 x 16cm), enclosed in screen- printed fiber paper over stiff card portfolio. One internal plain card fold-in flap in portfolio torn, portfolio paper covering (perhaps naturally) a bit frayed with a couple small chips; the prints are in fine state. A scarce, early portfolio of Shields's work, limited to ten copies, with each print signed and dated on the verso by the artist. Shields (1944 - 2006) was widely known for his colorful prints and collages, which often involve multiple processes such as stitching, dying, application of fabrics or other materials, and screen-printing.         In Peking, Pres. Nixon, the first U.S. President to visit China, signs an ALS penned by his wife on a postcard bearing a stamp depicting a table tennis paddle – a ping-pong match led to this trip

Autograph Letter Signed “Pat” as First Lady, also signed “RN” as President, on verso of a picture postcard captioned “A scene in Chungshan Park,” 5.75” x 4”. Addressed by typewriter to “Mr. Don Carnevale / 15 East 63rd Street / New York, N.Y. 10022 / U.S.A.” Postmarked Peking, February 25, 1972. The stamp honors the 1971 Afro-Asian Table Tennis Games. Minor corner wear. Fine condition. On April 6, 1971, the American Ping-Pong team, in Japan for the 31st World Table Tennis Championship, was invited by the Chinese team to visit the People's Republic, all expenses paid. Four days later, they stepped across a bridge from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland, ushering in an era of “Ping-Pong diplomacy.” They were the first group of Americans allowed into China since the Communist takeover in 1949. After a Chinese table tennis team visited the USA, it was announced that President Nixon would visit China in 1972. During the week of February 21-28, 1972, Pres. Nixon became the first U.S. president to visit China. On February 25, 1972, the day these two postcards were mailed, Nixon spent his last full day in Peking beginning with a tour of the Forbidden City. Mrs. Nixon writes, “Dear Don, This card comes from us as a momento [sic] of an historical trip. Our love as always, Pat”, – also signed “RN”. Donato Carnevale of Harry Winston Jewelers in New York was described in a front-page story by Maxine Cheshire in the September 23, 1974 “Washington Post,” as “Rose Mary Woods’ longtime friend … who was ‘court jeweler’ to the First Family and ‘Uncle Don’ to the Nixon daughters…” Accompanied by an ALS of Rose Mary Woods to Carnevale on a similarly postmarked picture postcard from Peking, and related items.

        Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph

NP Millerton, New York: NP , (1972). True First Edition. Hardcover. vg. 4to. 15,160pp. Illustrated paper-covered boards with photographic dust jacket. Diane Arbus (1923-1971), was noted for her portraits of people on the fringes of society such as prostitutes, transvestites, dwarfs, giants, as well as ordinary working class citizens in unconventional poses and settings. This work was published in conjunction with the 1972 retrospective staged by MoMA curator John Szarkowski which attracted more than 7 million viewers. Arbus also became the first American photographer to be exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Her 1967 photograph Identical Twins which illustrates the front cover as well as the dj of this work, is tenth on the list of most expensive photographs. "For me the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture. And more complicated. I do have a feeling for the print but I don't have a holy feeling for it. I really think what it is, is what it's about. I mean it has to be of something. And what it's of is always more remarkable than what it is." (Diane Arbus). Illustrated with 80 annotated full-page b/w reproductions of photographs by Arbus, as well as one photo of herself. This copy is the first printing with the plate titled "Two Girls in Identical Raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C, 1969" which was supressed in subsequent printings. Edited and designed by Arbus' daughter, Doon Arbus and Marvin Israel. 15 pages of text, edited from tape recordings of a series of classes Arbus gave in 1971 as well as from some interviews and some of her writings. Head and tail of spine and parts of edges slightly bumped. One-inch bump on top edge of back board. Some creasing and scuffing on dj, few tiny closed tears on dj edge. Minor age yellowing to outer edges of pages not affecting images. Tight copy in overall very good condition.

Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph [RARE VARIANT]

Aperture & The Museum of Modern Art New York: Aperture & The Museum of Modern Art, 1972. First edition, Second printing. Hardcover. vg. 4to. np. Illustrated paper-covered boards with photographic dust jacket. Square spine (not rounded spine as normally found on the first printing and the replacement second printing). Illustrated with full-page duotones of photographs by Arbus, as well as one photo of herself. Rare variant of the second print run, containing an image that was later withdrawn due to model-release issues: Two girls in identical raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C. 1969. The entire second press run was to be destroyed by the publishers prior to distribution for this reason. 15 pages of text, edited from tape recordings of a series of classes Arbus gave in 1971 as well as from some interviews and some of her writings. Published in conjunction with the 1972 retrospective staged by MoMA curator John Szarkowski, which attracted more than 7 million viewers. Her 1967 photograph Identical Twins, which illustrates the front cover as well as the dj of this work, is tenth on the list of most expensive photographs. This photo was removed from later printings. Dust jacket verso lightly foxed throughout and small closed tear inside back upper left, at flap crease. Small sticker of previous bookseller on free front endpaper. Slight discoloration to top edge of cover. Overall, fine condition. Diane Arbus (1923-1971), was noted for her portraits of people on the fringes of society such as prostitutes, transvestites, dwarfs, giants, as well as ordinary working class citizens in unconventional poses and settings. Arbus became the first American photographer to be exhibited at the Venice Biennale. "For me the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture. And more complicated. I do have a feeling for the print but I don't have a holy feeling for it. I really think what it is, is what it's about. I mean it has to be of something. And what it's of is always more remarkable than what it is." (Diane Arbus).

        Learning from Las Vegas

Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1972.. First edition of this ground breaking work. Folio. Original blue cloth with illustrated frontispiece. Signed by both Robert Venturi (who has added a drawing of Venturi's Mother's House) and Denise Scott Brown. Boards lightly rubbed, else in excellent condition. Lacking the rare glassine dust jacket. "Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice." [The New York TImes]. A very sharp copy.

        Watership Down [Inscribed]

London: Rex Collings, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression. 8vo: viii,413,[1]pp, with folding map by Marilyn Hemmett colored in outline. Publisher's cinnamon-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover stamped in gilt with rabbit device; in mustard-colored illustrated dust jacket printed in black, priced £3.50. Inscribed by Adams on the title page: To Miranda Parrish / with best wishes from / Richard Adams / August 1973. Fine (probably unread), binding tight and square, corners firm and sharp, pages clean and crisp; just about Fine jacket with several short closed tears and light soiling to spine panel. Watership Down takes its title from the name of a hill in the north of Hampshire, where Adams grew up (and to which the small band of rabbits journey in their quest to establish a new home as they escape destruction of their warren). The novel, Adams' s first, was rejected by 13 publishers before Rex Collings accepted it, and it has never gone out of print (in fact, it is Penguin Books' s best-selling novel of all time). In the International Companion Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, Peter Hunt calls the book "the most successful single postwar animal story, which is almost ironic, considering that Watership Down is a gritty, often frightening tale in which characters die violent deaths or become maimed, and these facts of life are not disguised. Hunt quotes an interview with Adams, in which Adams said of his writing style, "I derived early the idea that one must at all costs tell the truth to children, not so much about mere physical pain and fear, but about the really unanswerable things—what Thomas Hardy called 'the essential grimness of the human situation.'" Adapted into an animated film featuring the voices of John Hurt, Ralph Richardson, Denholm Elliott and Zero Mostel. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
