The River Styx, Ohio and Other Poems

NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. (1972). The uncorrected proof copy of the second book by this Pulitzer Prize winning and National Book Award-winning poet. 8-1/2" x 11" galleys, printed on rectos only, bound in red wrappers printed in a pattern with the HBJ logo. In our experience, HBJ proofs in this large format are quite scarce, suggestive of their having had very limited print runs. We've never seen this proof before, and we don't find any records for it in institutional holdings. Slight splay to front cover; else fine. An uncommon early book by one of the most highly regarded American poets working today. . First Edition. Softcover.

        THE BANANA BOOK

New York: Siamese Banana, 1972. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. 4to. Side-stapled mimeograph. Fine but for mild damp-stain (which a colleague humorously referred to as "authentic New York School soilage") to lower edge of - mainly - front cover; traces of same to rear cover and bottom edge, close inspection only. Else sharp and bright. First edition, one of 26 lettered copies signed by Brainard. The "A" copy. Typical Brainard: gossipy, funny, and erotic. Filled with New York School in-jokes and sexually graphic images. There was an unsigned edition (no apparent priority), which strangely seems more uncommon than the signed. OCLC notes more than a third of this edition already behind institutional walls. Arguably the most desirable copy of an increasingly scarce Brainard title.

        THE GODS THEMSELVES

Garden City: Doubleday & Company Inc. Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc.,. 1972. cloth.. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelf. wear to spine ends and tiny closed tear at bottom edge of rear panel.. A somewhat scarce Asimov first edition seldom found in decent. condition. (#111862). First edition. "In the twenty-second century, Earth and men of a para- universe establish an ideal energy exchange. Through Earthmen's electron pump and the para- men's position pump, the energy needs of both worlds are satisfied without energy loss to either. A few probing skeptics, men and para-men, learn that in time the exchange will explode our Sun, but both scientific establishments ignore their alarm. The 'fathers' of the energy pumps, puffed with pride and selfishness, will not allow their reputation, doctrine, and achievement to be jeopardized ... The blind egotism and leaden conscience of his [Asimov's] scientific establishments offer no promise that a world ruled by scientists rather than politicians would be more free of it." - Berger, Science Fiction and the New Dark Age, p. 130. THE GODS THEMSELVES ... which was only the second genuine singleton of his career and which won both Hugo and Nebula awards, proved to be his finest single creation, a complex tale involving potentially catastrophic energy transfers between alternate universes and -- rarely for him -- intriguing alien beings (they are considerably more interesting than the humans in the cast)." - John Clute / Malcolm J. Edwards, SFE (online). Written with a verve and economy that are missing from Asimov's later novels." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-48. Winner of the 1972 and 1973 Hugo awards for best novel. Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 4-20. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 909-14.

Huckleberry Finn. Eight Signed Color Lithographs Based Upon Incidents in the Mark Twain Novel

Fernand Mourlot Paris: Fernand Mourlot, 1972. One of only 200 suites of full-color, 25 by 19 3/4-inch lithographs based on the artist's illustrations for the 1940 Heritage Press edition of the Twain classic. When he was commissioned in 1935 to illustrate the Press's new editions of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Rockwell visited Hannibal, Missouri, to get a feel for the place where Twain grew up. Expecting urban sprawl to have made the town unrecognizable as the place Twain wrote about, Rockwell found exactly the opposite to be true. In his autobiography, he commented that Hannibal had turned Mark Twain into a kind of cottage industry by naming everything from markets to hotels to barber shops after him. Today, that list would include the Mark Twain Museum, where a number of Rockwell's own paintings for Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer hang on display. It is fitting that Rockwell, whose genius lay in his ability to portray an idealized vision of small-town America, and whose paintings often featured children, should have illustrated Huck Finn, the quintessential American coming-of-age tale. At the same time, it is perhaps a surprise that a man who admitted an aversion to life's rougher, seedier aspects would illustrate a novel with such an unsavory cast of characters including murderers, swindlers, drunkards, and thieves. This suite of illustrations, then, represents an intriguing union of two visionary artists whose varying, though essentially sympathetic, depictions of the American experience endure to this day. The eight illustrations in this suite include: "Then Miss Watson took me in the closet and prayed"; "Jim got down on his knees"; "Miss Mary Jane"; "My hands shook"; "Your eyes is lookin'"; "Then for three minutes, or maybe four"; "There warn't no harm in them"; and "When I lit my candle." All are printed on handmade Velin d'Arches paper and signed by the artist in a bold hand in the lower right corner. Housed in a tan canvas portfolio with tie straps. Portfolio with the usual "Huckelberry" misspelling to the front cover. Prints and portfolio very fine.

        THE BANANA BOOK

Siamese Banana New York: Siamese Banana, 1972.
