SCARS - SIGNED BY BRIGID POLK

(POLK, BRIGID). Berlin, Brigid "Polk". SCARS - SIGNED BY BRIGID POLK. Signed by the Author. Philadelphia, PA: Telegraph Books, 1972. First Edition. 12mo. Illustrated Wrappers. Near Fine. np (84pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Poor little rich girl Brigid "Polk" Berlin was well-known in the sixties New York social scene as Andy Warhol's confidant, and a mainstay of his Factory entourage. She was then rarely without her blank book in which she requested those around her to make ink impressions (in the same way that fingerprints are taken) of the scars on their bodies. Published in 1972, this quirky tome is a compilation of scars (with in many cases accompanying explanations) from the likes of sister Richie Berlin, Brice Marden, Bill Berkson, Lillian Roxon, Taylor Mead, Genevieve Waite, Gerard Malanga, John Giorno, Buddy Wirtschafter, Rene Ricard, Dotson Rader, Rita Donagh, Charles Rydell, superstar Viva!, Henry Gibson, Charlotte Moorman, Peter Beard, Helio Oiticica, Patti Smith, and many, many others. A most handsome copy of this uncommon item SIGNED by Brigid Polk in black ink on the title page showing just a bit of typical age toning to its white wrappers. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Anonyme Skulpturen : A Typology of Technical Constructions

Wittenborn and Company, New York 1972 - [1972]. 4to. 1st American edition. Stamped review copy on title page and with publisher's publicity letter tipped on front free endpaper. Text in German, French, and English. Minor bowing to boards. Faint soiling to top edge of leaves. Light toning and faint rubbing with few minute chips to d.j. VG/VG. After meeting as students in Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher began systematically photographing the buildings of the waning mining industry in Hilla’s native Ruhr Valley. Captured in a neutral and 'objective' light at carefully chosen times of day, the industrial structures that are the Bechers' subjectâ€"many of them slated for demolitionâ€"reveal a stark grandeur that transcends their utilitarian origins. The cumulative effect of the images, often displayed in grids to emphasize repeated formal gestures, won the Bechers acclaim as both photographers and conceptual artists, and their visual aesthetic has proved lastingly influential. This is a first American edition of their first book, with review materials affixed to the front endpaper. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE GODS THEMSELVES

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc.,. 1972. Octavo,. cloth.. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelf. wear to spine ends and tiny closed tear at bottom edge of rear panel.. A somewhat scarce Asimov first edition seldom found in decent. condition. (#111862). First edition. "In the twenty-second century, Earth and men of a para- universe establish an ideal energy exchange. Through Earthmen's electron pump and the para- men's position pump, the energy needs of both worlds are satisfied without energy loss to either. A few probing skeptics, men and para-men, learn that in time the exchange will explode our Sun, but both scientific establishments ignore their alarm. The 'fathers' of the energy pumps, puffed with pride and selfishness, will not allow their reputation, doctrine, and achievement to be jeopardized ... The blind egotism and leaden conscience of his [Asimov's] scientific establishments offer no promise that a world ruled by scientists rather than politicians would be more free of it." - Berger, Science Fiction and the New Dark Age, p. 130. THE GODS THEMSELVES ... which was only the second genuine singleton of his career and which won both Hugo and Nebula awards, proved to be his finest single creation, a complex tale involving potentially catastrophic energy transfers between alternate universes and -- rarely for him -- intriguing alien beings (they are considerably more interesting than the humans in the cast)." - John Clute / Malcolm J. Edwards, SFE (online). Written with a verve and economy that are missing from Asimov's later novels." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-48. Winner of the 1972 and 1973 Hugo awards for best novel. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 909-14.

Steven Millhauser Collection: Edwin Mullhouse, Portrait of A Romantic, In The Penny Arcade, From the Realm of Morpheus, The Barnum Museum, Little Kingdoms, Martin Dressler, The Knife Thrower, Enchanted Night, The King in the Tree, Dangerous Laughter.

1972-2008., New York 1972 - Uncorrected proofs of the first editions of each of the author's books. Octavo, 11 volumes. Each are in near fine to fine condition and each are signed by the author. An uncommon set of proofs. Millhauser is best known for his 1972 debut novel, Edwin Mullhouse. The novel is seemingly autobiographical, and it's about a precocious writer whose career ends abruptly with his death at age eleven. Millhauser followed with a second novel, Portrait of a Romantic (1977) and his first collection of short story In the Penny Arcade (1986). In 1997 he won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Martin Dressler. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

TEN LITTLE NIGGERS (hardcover with original DJ)

Crime Club - Collins, London 1972 - HARDCOVER WITH ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET with price intact on the flap. DJ has Purple lettering on a faded pink cover. While the 10 little people on the cover are clearly depicted, the hand which is reaching over to pluck off one of the black characters has blended into the faded background color unless you look closely. The hand is white in color and the faded pink cover now looks cream so the contrast between the two has lessened. This is the highly collectible DJ with 10 little black characters, 2 holding a spear and one eating what appears to be a watermelon. 1.00 net price printed on inside front flap. THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION DJ. THIS DJ WAS ISSUED WITH THIS HARDCOVER BY COLLINS - CRIME CLUB. Originally published in 1939, this copy was printed in a tiny quantity before being pulled in 1972. DJ has a few small chips along edges and a small faint moisture cloud at bottom of backstrip that kind of blends in. Inside flap shows some discoloration along edge. Red cloth panels are bright with black lettering on spine. Book has been handled and read. corners rounded/bumped. small dent along one edge. Front free endpaper has a 1 inch chip at top corner. Endpaper has a matching discoloration line from the DJ flap edge. Green ink appears to say HS 10P with a line through it. Copyright page has a faint withdrawn stamp and a circular stamp stating Dudley Libraries. No other evidence of such. No other stickers, stamps, pockets etc on either book or DJ. Title changed from Ten Little Niggers to Ten Little Indians to And Then There Were None. This is one of the most sought after titles + DJ in modern book collecting. This story is now being read in middle/high schools. No shortage of interest on this title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Report on Planet Three and Other Speculations

Victor Gollancz, London 1972 - First edition. Ownership signature of Ian Macauley, fine in a slightly spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Receipt from the publisher laid in. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Macauley; "To Ian, who is welcome to steal any of it. Arthur. Lo. Aug 72." Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, *Islands in the Sky*, and was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood's End*, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, mainly speculations on space, and some reprints of earlier essays. Macauley has made a pen emendation in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
