New York: The New Art Scene

New York: Holt. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY MULAS on the half-title: "ad mio dottore Harry Grabstald, con affetto Ugo Mulas N.Y. M.H. 1972." A MAGNIFICENT COPY IN THE SCARCE SLIPCASE. Mulas's classic photographic study of the vibrant New York art scene in the 1960s, illustrated with over 500 photographs of major artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and many others."Inspired by the strong American presence at the 1964 Venice Biennale, the Italian photographer Ugo Mulas made three extended visits to New York over the following years. The result [is this] massive, handsomely designed volume [that] captures the art world at one of its most volatile and vivid peaks...[Mulas] was ideally suited to infiltrate that scene as a sympathetic and unobtrusive observer...With more than 500 photos reproduced in heavily inked, knockout black-and-white, the book has a marvelous scope. Its arresting cover image-a pair of New York cops confronting a gaggle of bohemians at a party in Andy Warhol's Factory-isn't typical, but it suggests something of the scene's exhilaration and notoriety..." (Vince Aletti; Roth 101).Text by Alan Solomon. New York: Holt, Rinehart, Winston, 1967. Quarto, original linen, original photo-illustrated dust jacket; original cardboard slipcase. Book fine, extremely bright dust jacket in outstanding condition with only two tiny closed tears at top of spine end and small, nearly invisible tape reinforcement on verso spine ends and flap fold. Small circular orange sticker over price. An exceptional copy - the finest we've handled - of an extremely difficult book to find in collectible condition, very scarce signed and with the original slipcase.

        Poesies Antillaises

Paris, Fernand Mourlot 1972 - Portfolio loose in Velin d’Arches, collected in the original orange chemise with the lithographed manuscripted title, well preserved in the original orange cloth clamshell box. The portfolio contains 28 lithographs in full page in brown, 27 Initial Letters, and numerous ornamental drawings in blue. Limited edition of 275 copies, of which our copy is one of 200 exemplars (N. 209) Matisse conceived this portfolio in honor of his traveler poet friend John-Antoine Nau that he met in the early 1900 during a trip in Martinique, the island then become a common loved and inspiring place, for both the poet and the artist. Matisse begun his project in 1945, working with exotic models from Martinique and Le Malgache toward the illustrations of the portfolio, and choosing among the most evocative poems that best draw his inspiration. Matisse created, on the wave of this emotional poems of Nau, 27 beautiful women's faces, each with a different expressions and intensive look that reflect their deep and secret mood. As frontispiece Matisse drew a portrait of John Antoine Nau, from a picture that he requested and obtained from the heirs of the poet. Many ornamental drawings and ornate initial Letters complete the portfolio. It took 8 years of Matisse life to complete his drawings and assemble the portfolio, but unfortunately Matisse never saw this work published, due to financial problems and the precarious health of the artist, the portfolio was issued 20 years after his death. One of the most important and beautiful work form Matisse, a scarce edition in excellent condition Ref: Duthuit 37 - Manet to Hockney, No. 129 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Watership Down

New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1972. First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed and dated by the author in 1974 on the title page. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light wear. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

New York: Random House, 1972. 206 Pages. First Edition stated below number line 97532468 There is a hint of fading at the top and bottom of the gray boards. Otherwise this book is in Brand New condition. Dust jacket has been protected with Gaylord vlnyl covering and 5.95 flap price is unclipped. Interior text pages and illustrations are flawless. Heralded as the best book on the dope decade, Hunter Thompson's documented drug orgy through Las Vegas would no doubt leave Nancy Reagan blushing. Under the pseudonym of Raoul Duke, Thompson travels with his Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo, in a souped-up convertible dubbed the Great Red Shark. In the trunk, they hide two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, and screamers. A quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser and a pint of raw ether which they manage to consume during their short tour. On assignment from a sports magazine to cover the fabulous Mint 400--a free-for-all biker's race in the heart of the Nevada desert--the drug-a-delic duo stumbles through Vegas in hallucinatory hopes of finding the American dream. Two truck-stop waitresses tell them it's nearby, but can't remember if it's on the right or the left. They of course never get the story, but they do commit the only sins in Vegas: burning the locals, abusing the tourists, terrifying the help. For Thompson to remember and pen his experiences with such clarity and wit is nothing short of a miracle; an impressive feat no matter how one feels about the subject matter. This book is a pop-culture classic, an icon of an era past and a nugget of pure comedic genius. First appeared in Rolling Stone magazine, issue 95, November 11, 1971 and 96, November 25, 1971. Illustrations appeared in same issues. First Edition Stated. Hard Back. As New/As New. Illus. by Steadman, Ralph - Drawings. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2".

        Photographs of Bombing

1972. Four panoramic panels (constructed from nine individual images) of post-bombing destruction. Only one of the images is labeled, on verso: "Nam Ngan hamlet, Don Soc district, Thanh Hoa province, destroyed by US bombs dropped from B.52's at 2:30 hrs, April 26, 1972." Black and white photographs, mounted on mat board. These were given to members of a U.S. peace contingent visiting Hanoi in late October 1972, just before the Presidential election that year, in hopes that their content would be publicized in the U.S. upon their return. The high-profile entourage of women consisted of Jane Hart, wife of Senator Philip Hart; the poet Denise Levertov; and the novelist Muriel Ruykeyser. They met with the Vietnam Committee for Solidarity with the American People and the Vietnam Women's Union. Richard Nixon, running on a "Peace With Honor" platform, won the election in a landslide over George McGovern, who ran as an explicitly antiwar candidate. The peace delegation had little but symbolic impact: it reiterated, as had been the case for years, that the bulk of the artistic community in the U.S. was soundly antiwar, and it showed -- as had also been the case for some time -- that the antiwar movement now included part of the mainstream of American life, in this case represented by a moderate Senator's wife. Three are 20" x 7"; one is roughly 26" x 6". Near fine. In our experience, unique. No Binding.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

London: The Arcadia Press,, 1972. Folio. Original half vellum, hand-made "seaweed" paper boards, spine with gilt titles direct, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green endpapers, calligraphic-style text printed in green and black on hand-made seaweed paper, made using a process in which seaweed is pressed into the paper, reproducing with striking likeness the transluscent quality of submarine flora. With the original cream paper slipcase. Ten tipped-in colour plates. Two tiny white specks to front free endpaper due to production flaw; slipcase with minor rubbing to extremities and light bowing to fore edges. A bright and fresh copy. Signed limited edition, number 86 of 110 copies signed by the illustrator, Errol Le Cain, the calligrapher, David A. Howells, and the paper maker, Philip H. Rowson. The contrast of Le Cain's boldly colourfull illustrations with the delicate quality of the pressed seaweed peppered throughout the text lends itself particularly well to the subject of Coleridge's epic poem.
