Dendritic Cells Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology

Springer. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 353 pages. Dimensions: 9.5in. x 6.4in. x 0.7in.The understanding of the role of dendritic cells (DCs) in immune responses has come a long way since Steinmann and colleagues described these cells in 1972. - tensive research during the intervening period has provided a good understanding of the complexity of the DC system and its pivotal role in immunity. It is also now clearer how different subsets of DCs interact and regulate each other and how DC populations affect the function of other cells of the immune system. The improved understanding of their role in immune response has led to the idea that modulation of DC functions by, for example, pharmacological agents could be used as a pot- tial therapeutic approach in some pathological conditions. The actual applicability and therapeutic potential of all these approaches is yet to be fully demonstrated but nonetheless, animal models of human diseases are proving to be very helpful in the evaluation of manipulated DCs as a new treatment in diseases like cancer, auto- munity or asthma. DCs are integral to the initiation and regulation of immune response (Banchereau et al. 2000). The outcome of antigen presentation by DCs is determined by their maturation status, which can be induced by their interaction with danger signals. To recognise a wide array of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP), DCs express a number of pattern recognition receptors (PRR) such as Toll-like rec- tors (TLRs) and C-type lectin receptors (CLR) that recognise structural components of pathogens and discriminate between self and non-self molecules. An exceptionally bright copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to French philosopher, writer and translator Roger Munier (1923?-2010) on the front free endpaper, "Pour Roger Munier, fidèlement, J. Derrida". Munier's many translations include Octavio Paz, Roberto Juarroz and Heidegger, with whom he forged a lasting friendship when he stayed in the Black Forest to perfect his German in 1949. Munier later introduced Heidegger to René Char. His obituary in Le Monde described him as a passionate writer and thinker and a mystic, whose favourite mode of expression was the "fragment". His main influence, apart from Heidegger, was Meister Eckhart. Derrida and Munier both contributed to L'Endurance de la Pensée (1968), a book of collected writings on Jean Beaufret. In 1967 Derrida sent Munier a copy of his recently published De la grammatologie. After having read it Munier sent him a warm congratulatory letter discussing Heidegger and positivism.

April 30, 1972. The Last of the Goon ShowsSpecially Written by Spike Milligan for the 50th Anniversary of the BBC Three Goons in the FountainEach One Seeking FameSellers, Milligan, and SecombeWhich One Will the Fountain Blame[GOON SHOW]. SELLERS, Peter. MILLIGAN, Spike. SECOMBE, Harry. The Goon Show One Night Special Reunion. A Collection of Goony Ephemera. London: Camden Theater, April 30, 1972."These autographs from The Goons and a number of guest artists were signed for me in my presence at the recording of 'The Last of The Goon Shows' at The Camden Theatre London on Sunday 30th April 1972 at which I was one of the BBC Studio Managers. [Signed] Michael W. Cowles 1st December 2013."Thus introduced, this collection includes an original ticket to the show, printed on orange card; the Daily Mail's original story published the following day on May 1, 1972; promotional flyer, typed on yellow paper; the original BBC Radio 4 Program, signed by Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Harry Seacombe, writer Eric Sykes, performers Max Geldray, Ray Ellington, Graham Stark, film star Michael Caine and two other indecipherable signatures; and, significantly, a copy of the show's thirty-one page script with rehearsal and recording schedule on blue paper, marked up in red and black ink (by Michael W. Cowles). The collection beautifully housed in a fleece-lined, full black morocco clamshell case, spine lettered in gilt."The Goon Show was a radio comedy show broadcast by the BBC. It changed the face of British comedy and influenced later comedy including Monty Python, Eddie Izzard and many more. It was broadcast in the the UK between May 1951 and January 1960. The dignified 'stiff upper lip' attitude still prevailed in the post WWII age, but many who lived through the war were more inclined to question the rules and authorities that controlled their lives. Onto this scene burst The Goons with a quick fire, irreverent brand of humour that mocked those in establishment and offered a different farcical view of the world. What made The Goon Show different was its attitude. The comedy was edgier than it contemporaries and it used mad characters, satire and ground breaking sound effects in a surreal way unlike anything had done before. "The Last Goon Show of All, broadcast on 5 October 1972, was a special edition of the famous BBC Radio show The Goon Show, commissioned as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the BBC. It was simulcast on radio and television, and later released as an audio recording on long-playing record. This in turn has been re-issued in other formats such as compact disc. A video of the television broadcast was also released on VHS and later on DVD, although with some omissions. In early October 2007, 35 years after the original broadcast, a full unedited version was broadcast on BBC 7, the digital radio channel dedicated to re-runs of classic shows." (Wikipedia)."Spike Milligan was the creative force and main writer of The Goon Show, however he was often assisted by a co-writers such as Larry Stephens or Eric Sykes. Occasionally if Milligan was unable to writer the show, others would script entire show. There were originally four main cast members: Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. Spike Milligan would later be considered by many to be "The grandfather of modern British comedy" due to his work on The Goon Show and subsequent comedies. Peter Sellers would go on to become a world famous comic actor, best known for playing Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies. Harry Secombe remained a well loved singer and entertainer throughout his career. Michael Bentine left the group after only a few series and before the show reached it's peak of success" (Goon Show website).

We took a dream, we perfected the technology to make it real, and we followed it all the way. Our adventures in the new world of space proved once more that America can do what it wills itself to do, if it applies to the muscle, the recourses, and the heart to get the job done.""         Sashin yo Sayonara [Bye Bye Photography, Dear]

Tokyo: Shashinhyoron-sha. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY MORIYAMA in both English and Japanese (kanji). "Sashin yo Sayonara (Bye Bye Photography) is the most extreme monument of the Provoke period, indeed one of the most extreme photobooks ever published. Daido Moriyama pushes both the form of the photographic sequence and the photograph itself to the limits of legibility, with a brilliant barrage of stream-of-consciousness imagery culled from his own pictures, found photographs - such as shots of car accidents - and images taken from the television set. An notion of 'good' technique is thrown out the window... The photographic language is one of blur, motion, scratches, light leaks, dust, graininess and stains, like Robert Frank or William Klein on speed. "Moriyama's vision is entirely consistent, and his willingness to be led to the edge of photography's coherence is the photographic equivalent of Surrealist automatic writing by a camera that almost has a mind of its own. 'I wanted to go to the end of photography', he declared, and the book is a summation of the Provoke period. It reads like a jerky hand-held cinéma vérité film. The pace is frenetic, the image bombardment never lets up, and we reach the book's end in a state either of breathless exhaustion or on an image-fuelled high. the tone is so ambiguous that it is not clear whether we are experiencing a dream or a nightmare, exhilaration or despair - or both at the same time" (Parr and Badger, The Photobook, I).

Shashin yo Sayonara / Bye, Bye Photography, Dear

Tokyo: Shashin Hyoron-sha (1972) - First Edition. Small quarto. SIGNED by Moriyama in Japanese and English in an early hand (most signed copies on the market have been signed within the past ten years). The photographer's third book: a masterpiece of Japanese photography, and the book that best illustrates the conceptual ideals and vision of the Provoke photographers. Here Moriyama pushes the boundaries of the medium: assembling images from a variety of sources, placing them in a tumultuous and discordant anti-sequence, and assaulting the viewer with full-page grainy, blurry, and sometimes indecipherable pictures. (Parr / Badger, v1, 298; Roth 218; Open Book 290; Auer 543). Light inevitable creases at the spine, small production flaw to the rear end paper; a near fine copy in wrappers in a near fine jacket.
