Shashin yo Sayonara / Bye, Bye Photography, Dear

Tokyo: Shashin Hyoron-sha (1972) - First Edition. Small quarto. SIGNED by Moriyama in Japanese and English in an early hand (most signed copies on the market have been signed within the past ten years). The photographer's third book: a masterpiece of Japanese photography, and the book that best illustrates the conceptual ideals and vision of the Provoke photographers. Here Moriyama pushes the boundaries of the medium: assembling images from a variety of sources, placing them in a tumultuous and discordant anti-sequence, and assaulting the viewer with full-page grainy, blurry, and sometimes indecipherable pictures. (Parr / Badger, v1, 298; Roth 218; Open Book 290; Auer 543). Light inevitable creases at the spine, small production flaw to the rear end paper; a near fine copy in wrappers in a near fine jacket.         Existential Errands

Boston: Little Brown, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Surface marks to jacket and a slight paper adhesion on the rear panel, short tears to jacket at spine ends, still attractive and very good. Faint wear and discoloration to book edges.Inscribed by Mailer "To Buzz and Carol These were the years, hey gang? Love Norman May '72". Buzz and Carol Farbar were longtime friends of Mailer's from the publishing business - Buzz was involved in Mailer's three movies (Maidstone, Wild 90 and Beyond the Law), playing Buzz Cameo in the improvised gangster film "Wild 90" which is the subject of the essay "Some Dirt in the Talk" in this collection. Years later Buzz was arrested in a sting operation trying to buy a kilo of cocaine (actually a harmless white powder being shopped by an undercover agent). In return for a promise of a radically reduced sentence, Buzz was convinced to wear a wire to a lunch at Armando's in Brooklyn with Mailer where he would get Norman to admit that he was the money guy in an international hashish ring run by Mailer's onetime associate Richard Stratton. It didn't work out and Buzz was given a harsh 6 year sentence. His wife Carol divorced him in 1985 and he ended up tragically committing suicide after being released from prison. Needless to say, rumors about Mailer's involvement in the drug smuggling and in Buzz's silence on the matter have made the rounds over the years. A terrific association with a close associate and one of the more puzzling episodes in one of the great literary lives of the 20th century. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; Signed by Author. Inventory No: 043587.

Report on Planet Three and Other Speculations

London: Victor Gollancz. 1972. First. First edition. Ownership signature of Ian Macauley, fine in a slightly spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Receipt from the publisher laid in. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Macauley; "To Ian, who is welcome to steal any of it. Arthur. Lo. Aug 72." Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, mainly speculations on space, and some reprints of earlier essays. Macauley has made a pen emendation in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. .

        New York, New York

Magyar Helikon, Budapest 1972 - With 96 photographic reproductions, many double-page. First edition. In the original dust jacket. (132) p. (two tracing paper leaves and one folding leaf are included). ?In 1968 the photographer György L?rinczy took advantage of the Hungarian government's decision to relax its rigorous laws on citizens travelling abroad. The result was his book New York, New York, which projected a rather less jaundiced view of the Big Apple than that of many home-grown photographers. As a foreigner's vision, and in terms of photographic outlook, L?rinczy's perspective clearly has affinities with that of William Klein, but his manic exuberance seems to run on pure energy, without the psychological tensions that underpin Klein's more realistic and informed vision of the city. It seems unlikely that L?rinczy saw the work of any of the Japanese photographers of the day, but his book has a similar 'anything goes' feeling, akin to the totally spontaneous style of someone like Daido Moriyama, who coincidentally, was photographing in New York around the same time. L?rinczy's style is rough, raw and uninhibited, in the best stream-of-consciousness manner. But he has nevertheless thought about New York, New York as a book, not only laying it out in a dynamic cinematic style, but employing such devices as printing one or two pages on tracing paper, or utilizing extreme grain, blur and even solarization. The later, surprisingly, renders his depiction of the city's energies more rather hallucinatory feeling that L?rinczy seems to have experienced on encountering this most vibrant of cities. L?rinczy clearly had a whale of a time in the headquarters of consumer capitalism, catching up on the 1960s and tasting some of its forbidden fruits, such as rock bands and experimental theatre groups. This excited, carefree, though not naive view of New York makes a refreshing change from the inbred cynicism of the streetwise native". (Parr-Badger: The Photobook. Phaidon, 2004.). Scores to the dust jacket at rear panel. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Poesies Antillaises

Poesies Antillaises. Matisse, Henri & Nau, John-Antoine .Paris: Mourlot, 1972 . Copy #76 of 200 (entire edition 250: 1-50 with a suite of the lithographs; 200 as this). Original edition. Duthuit. Matisse books #37 Illustrated with 28 full-page lithographs by Matisse. 11 ? x 15" loose as issued in original glassine, wrappers. In folding box. Matisse conceived this portfolio in honor of his traveler poet friend John-Antoine Nau (1860ñ1918), real name EugËne LÈon ...douard Torquet. Nau was a French poet and writer most famous for his novel Enemy Force, which won the first Prix Goncourt in 1903. He was born on November 19, 1860, in San Francisco, California and was thus an American citizen. Nauís poetry took its themes from voyages in the Antilles and in particular to Martinique where the facial sculpture of women from the Islands, with their exoticism and richness, was a great inspiration. Matisse greatly admired the poetry of Nau. They had first met with Signac in 1903 or 1904 and they were drawn together by a love of Martinique. Many years later, after Nauís death, Matisse decided he wanted to make an album consisting of poems by Nau inspired by Martinique and to link them to a series of lithograph studies of Martiniquaise models. Matisse began his project in 1945, working with exotic models from Martinique and Le Malgache toward the illustrations of the portfolio, and choosing among the most evocative poems of Nau. The book was not printed until 1972.

Wilder replies to a letter from actor, William Redfield (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). Redfield requested the rights to produce "The Skin of Our Teeth" on Broadway. Wilder replied that the film was already in the works. Wilder expresses concern that if New York Times critic, Clive Barnes gave a "bad review", it could damage the movie. He also mentions other various productions including one taking place in Stockbridge, MA presenting "some unrecognizable goings-on with Anne Bancroft." A lengthy letter with excellent content.. Signed by Author. Soft Cover. Fine.

Tirage rare. Bel état.
