Glyptique susienne des origines a l'epoque des Perses achemenides. 2 volumes (Texte/Planches).

        Learning from Las Vegas

Cambridge: The MIT Press, 1972. Fine in a near fine price-clipped jacket with two small edge tears and a few light creases. One of the best examples I have seen of this notoriously fragile jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.. First Edition. Folio. In 1968, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour taught a third year studio graduate class at Yale that would have great implications on the study of architecture in the postmodern era. The class was called Learning from Las Vegas, or Form Analysis as Design Research. There were 13 students in total. In the end, their work would comprise the basis for the landmark architectural work Learning from Las Vegas, authored by Venturi, Brown, and Izenour, but compiled, researched, and photographed by the students themselves. The seminal architectural text of its era, right there with Ruscha in terms of prescience and influence.

EDWARD RUSCHA (ED - WERD REW -SHAY) YOUNG ARTIST: A BOOK ACCOMPANYING THE EXHIBITION OF PRINTS, DRAWINGS AND BOOKS OF EDWARD RUSCHA AT THE MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS APRIL 18 - MAY 28, 1972

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward and Edward "Gus" Foster. EDWARD RUSCHA (ED - WERD REW -SHAY) YOUNG ARTIST: A BOOK ACCOMPANYING THE EXHIBITION OF PRINTS, DRAWINGS AND BOOKS OF EDWARD RUSCHA AT THE MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS APRIL 18 - MAY 28, 1972. Minneapolis, MN: Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1972. First Edition 1/2000. 12mo. Illustrated Boards. Catalogue Raisonné. Good -/No Jacket - As Issued. np (436pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Edward Ruscha and Edward Foster. With a biography and exhibition checklist. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the charmingly designed exhibition document cum artist's book - Ruscha himself classified it as such in his self-compiled 1982 SFMOMA bibliography - published in conjunction with a 1972 Minneapolis Institute of Arts retrospective of the artist's work on paper. Included here is an original photo piece from 1971 entitled "Tanks, Banks, Ranks, Thanks", a complete listing of the words used by the artist in his work from 1959 through 1972, and a full catalogue raisonné of his graphic art and artist books. Designed and printed in the format of a 1940s "Big Little Book", it is bound in paper-covered boards with newsprint pages, with the intentional use of cheap, non-archival paper insuring that the condition of this is almost always compromised. It shows significant wear, rubbing, and sunning to its green covers along with chipping and paper loss to the exterior hinges along the spine. The textblock is tight though yellowed with age - a typical condition flaw associated with this title - and bears some traces of glue repair to the front hinge and preliminaries. The often missing business cards of Edward Ruscha and curator Edward A. (Gus) Foster are both laid in, as issued. A serviceable example only of this elusive little gem (entry M25 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999") limited to two thousand unnumbered copies. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. "The collection of thirteen codices found in upper Egypt near Nag Hammadi in 1946 is one of the major archaeological discoveries of our time. Apparently the library of a Gnostic community in late antiquity, the codices are a repository of important spiritual materials from throughout the ancient world. Hence a thorough analysis of this new material is indispensable for any proper understanding of the history of religions in this period. The rich documentation which the codices add to early Coptic text material promises to raise to a new precision the historical analysis of that language. This edition presents collotype reproductions in natural size of all folios of the thirteen codices as well as reproductions of the covers and photographs previously taken of fragments that are now lost."         The Pin-Up. A Modest History

New York: Universe Books,, 1972. With a foreword by Joan Nicholson. Quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine and front board gilt, pink endpapers. With the dust jacket. Lavishly illustrated throughout. A fine copy in the bright, unclipped jacket, with some light spots of wear and creasing to extremities. First edition, first printing. Review copy, with press releases laid-in, anticipating some backlash against the publication: "In an age when women's lib posters loudly proclaim "Women Are Not Chicks", how does a publisher get away with putting out a lavishly illustrated book called The Pin-Up: A Modest History. Answer: he doesn't. But he mollifies the legitimate female opposition by asking a prominent feminist to write a Foreword assessing the book and the whole phenomenon of pin-ups from her point of view." The book traces the history of the pin-up girl from its pre-20th century origins, and explores the use of the pin-up girl tradition in cheesecake photography, posters, magazines, calendars, the cross-over with Hollywood, and its exploitation in soft porn.

(Würzburg - Die Festung Marienberg mit der Schottenkirche),

        G: A Novel.

Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London 1972 - First edition of the author's Booker Prize winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The dust jacket spine is bright and attractive. Signed by John Berger on the title page. John Berger relates the story of "G.," a young man forging an energetic sexual career in Europe during the early years of this century. With profound compassion, Berger explores the hearts and minds of both men and women, and what happens during sex, to reveal the conditions of the Don Juan's success: his essential loneliness, the quiet cumulation in each of his sexual experiences of all of those that precede it, the tenderness that infuses even the briefest of his encounters, and the way women experience their own extraordinariness through their moments with him. All of this Berger sets against the turbulent backdrop of Garibaldi and the failed revolution of Milanese workers in 1898, the Boer War, and the first flight across the Alps, making G. a brilliant novel about the search for intimacy in history's private moments.         [Poster]: The Fabulous Cockettes Host a Private Benefit Soiree Featuring The First Annual Miss deMeanor Beauty Pagent (sic) and dance With special added attractions Lady Divine

San Francisco: House of Good. 1972. Original large illustrated broadside on pink thin cardstock. 11.5" x 17.5". Art signed in the print by "W.R.S. '72". Slight wear, very near fine. A very attractive poster of a drag queen beauty pageant contestant parading about with bouquet and sash. This was one of the first San Francisco appearances by Divine (born Harris Glenn Milstead). Divine was described by "People Magazine" as the "Drag Queen of the Century," a character actor who usually played female roles, particularly for filmmaker John Waters. According to Bernard Jay's biography Not Simply Divine, Waters wrote a speech for Divine's appearance here, intended to shock the not easily shockable audience, "I smuggle rotten fruit into California and I eat pounds of white sugar! I had to come to California because I killed a couple of cops back East! Don't you realiuze? I killed Sharon Tate, and they've arrested the wrong people!" The Cockettes, a psychedelic drag queen troupe founded by Hibiscus (George Harris) performed outrageous parodies of show tunes, and much else. Breaking many social, cultural, and sexual boundaries along the way, they alos influenced the glitter rock-era of David Bowie, Elton John, and The New York Dolls. A very nice and much larger than usual broadside. .

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow [SIGNED ARTIST PROOF WOODCUT]

NP, NP 1972 - Striking original colored woodcut depicting a young Jewish boy and girl reading and working under a tree. Three people are seen working in the background, while an Israeli flag is proudly flying under a rainbow. The lower portion of the artwork features a Sabbath candelabra, two birds, and the NFTY initials (National Federation of Temple Youth), a Reform Jewish community for high school students which commissioned Irving Amen for this work. The matted woodcut measures 17" X 12", and is titled and signed in pencil at lower margin. The wooden frame measures 25 2/8" x 20". A certificate of authenticity from Collier Art Corporation is pasted at verso of frame. Some water-staining along left side of mat (not affecting the artwork). Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges of wooden frame. Frame in overall good, mat in fair, woodcut in fine condition. About the artist: Irving Amen (1918-2011) was a painter, printmaker and sculptor often referenced as one of the most important printmakers in the United States. Born in New York City in 1918, he began drawing at the age of four. A scholarship to the Pratt Institute was awarded to him when he was fourteen years old. With Michelangelo as his idol, he spent seven years in life classes perfecting his drawing. He headed a mural project and executed murals in the United States and Belgium. His first exhibition in woodcut was held at the New School for Social Research and his second at the Smithsonian Institution in 1949 and also exhibited at the Artists House in Jerusalem, the Library of Congress, and the National Academy of Design. Amen studied in Paris in 1950. Upon his return to the United States, he had one man shows in New York and Washington DC. In 1953, Amen traveled throughout Italy. This resulted in a series of eleven woodcuts, eight etchings and a number of oil paintings. One of these woodcuts, "Piazza San Marco #4" and its four woodblocks constitute a permanent exhibit of block printing in color at the Smithsonian Institution. Travel in Israel, Greece and Turkey in 1960 led to a retrospective show at the Artist's House in Jerusalem. His art is widely owned and loved. Irving Amen has taught at Pratt Institute and at the University of Notre Dame. He had a show of woodcuts at the Artists Studio in NYC. In 1974 he illustrated The Epic of Gilgamesh in linocuts and woodcuts for the Limited Editions Club. He designed a set of stained glass windows depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel for Agudas Achim Synagogue in Bexley, Ohio. His work often depicts themes of Judaism, chess, people, music, Italy and Don Quixote. In his later years he lived and worked in Boca Raton, Florida. Commissions include a Peace Medal in honor of the Vietnam War. He created designs for 12 stained glass windows 16 feet high depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel, commissioned by Agudas Achim Synagogue in Columbus, Ohio. He is listed in Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers and the Dictionary of Contemporary American Artists by Paul Cummings. He was elected member of Accademia Fiorentina Delle Arti Del Disegno, an organization to which Michelangelo belonged. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
