Walt Dizney's Songs and Stories of Uncle Remus featuring Brer Rabbit

Chicago: Institute of Positive Education, 1972. Broadside. 33 x 24.5 inches. Marginal creases. Art was his passion. Education was his vocation. Dr. Murry DePillars devoted his entire life to combining the two to promote enlightenment, to encourage understanding and to engender pride in the African-American experience. Born in Chicago, DePillars grew up in a family that recognized and encouraged his interest in visual art, as well as in the performing arts. The neighborhoods in which he lived were teeming with jazz and blues clubs, as well as with gospel and ethnic music which strongly affected him. This early childhood development provided the foundation for the man, whose commitment to art and to education changed the lives of those who were privileged to know him. Murry DePillars was educated in the public schools of Chicago. He earned an A.A. in Fine Arts from Kennedy-King Community College, a B.A. in Art Education and an M.A. in Urban Studies from Roosevelt University, also in Chicago. He received his Ph.D. in Art Education from The Pennsylvania State University. Both his master's thesis, "Housing, Environment and Children's Art" and his doctoral dissertation, "African-American Artists and Students: A Morphological Study in the Urban Black Aesthetic" addressed societal issues.

The Brakhage Lectures: George Melies, David Wark [D.W.] Griffith, Carl Theodore [Theodor] Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein (First Edition, inscribed to Barney Rosset)

Chicago: The Goodlion, 1972. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Brakhage on the front endpaper to to publisher Barney Rosset: "Dear Barney / In thanks for all you've given, made possible / Thanks / Stan Brakhage." Barney Rosset was the founder of the Grove Press, which, in addition to its obvious importance, helped usher Brakhage's work into institutions in the 1970s by "publishing" select short films by the artist on tiny reels that were sold to libraries and the publisher's readership. In this volume, Brakhage investigates four of the principal architects of cinema, including Sergei Eisenstein. A wonderful association, and an important collection by one of the most important cinematic artists of the 1970s. Very Good plus in paper-covered card wrappers as issued, with moderate rubbing and a bit of light wear at the extremities.

Encuentros, Rencontres, Meetings, Treffen, Incontri Pamplona: 1972 26 VI 3 VII

1972. Massive unpaginated documentation of hundreds of artworks, by an international array of avant-garde artists, displayed in public locations throughout Pamplona in June and July of 1972, incl. texts and hundreds of plates (most folding, some with plastic overlays, some with inserts or other quirky supplements) describing and documenting the works. 4to. Original wrpps., some minor soiling or age-darkening. Pamplona (ALEA) 1972. A fascinating, offbeat, unconventional publication whose form takes on the appearance of an art object itself. The roster of artists includes many of the most important figures in the avant garde of the moment, including Acconci, Andre, Arakawa, Baldessari, Ben, Boltanski, Cage, Christo, De Maria, Dibbets, Long, Nauman, On Kawara, Ruscha, Vostell, and Weiner, among many others. This catalogue, with its folded pages, inserts, and other arrangements, as well as striking photographic portraits of the artists, mirrors the free-wheeling spirit of the time. The exhibition was a major event on the international circuit and was instrumental in exposing the world of the international avant-garde to a Spanish audience until then sheltered from developments by the Franco regime.

Handwritten postscript signed "Isaac" on Ciardi's letter

Middlebury College, Vermont, 1972. unbound. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, Middlebury College, Vermont, August 27, 1972. Written on a letter sent by his friend John Ciardi (1916 - 1986), acclaimed poet and etymologist, to his wife Janet Jeppson Asimov, whereby the poet jokingly compares Isaac's behavior at a Bird Watchers Conference to that of new species of a promiscuous bird, in part: "...It seems only fair to tell you that the Conference Bird Watchers Club has compiled a series of exhausted reports on the "Isaacanary" and concluded that you are an endangered species. The "Isaacanary" has taken (like the Cow Bird) to laying her eggs in the nests of other birds. I will not enclose the 42 petitions we have received from the ladies of the Conference. They are for the archives. I will satisfy myself here by pointing out that all of them begin with 'Help!' 'Mayday' or 'S.O.S.' I speak only out of disinterested concern for the good of the conference when I say you must never let this bird come to any Conference unattended. When you fly supervisory...he comes recommended and atoned for. When he is alone, every one spends all day picking egg yolk off the scalp. He has even flirted with me - mostly by way of practice, to be sure - and who can tolerate that when he could be flirting with you, and not for any damn practice? This here "Isaacanary," I assure you, is no substitute for the Love Bird..." At some point John Ciardi requested that Isaac Asimov mail this letter to his wife Janet, of which he complied, but not before adding: "Dear Janet: Big John insists I mail this illiterate effusion. Please understand that when he says I 'lay eggs' he means I flirt and get nowhere. I am the laughing stock of the Conference." Horizontal folds; fine condition. Iconic American author and biochemist best known for his works of Science Fiction and Popular Science.

"... The Gods Themselves (1972), which was only the second genuine singleton of his career and which won both Hugo and Nebula awards, proved to be his finest single creation, a complex tale involving catastrophic energy transfers between alternate universes and -- rarely for him -- intriguing alien beings." The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, eds. Clute and Nicholls, 1999, p. 57. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder, 1981, 3-45. An appealing set in near fine condition (short, faint crease to the front cover of Galaxy May 1972 and clip marking on the cover and first few leaves of If April 1972). ; Octavo; Signed by Author.

        I travestiti

Dedica e firma autografe della Carmi a pennarello, datata Milano 24-6-1977 (Inscription signed by the Artist, dated Milan 24-6-1977). Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition).

I travestiti. Con una nota di Elvio Fachinelli

Essedi Editrice - L'Erba Voglio, (1972). Testo in italiano e in inglese. Parr / Badger, The Photobook, I, p. 228. Italiano

Alfred A. Knopf / G.P. Putnam's Sons / William B. Ewert / Orchard Books, New York 1972 - First editions. Each (except Digging to America) signed without inscription by author on title page. The Clock Winder: board edges a bit faded, two tiny spots on top page ridge. Back When We Were Grownups includes publisher's newsletter (laid in). An impressive collection of novels by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, comprising all published works released from 1972 to 2006 (and thus missing her first three, and last four, works), as well as her two juvenile titles. Your Place is Empty is also of particular interest, being an imprint of the William B. Ewert fine press in Concord, New Hampshire. With the exception of Digging to America, they are all signed by Anne Tyler directly on the title pages - no small feat considering that, until recently, the author did not make public appearances or grant interviews. Even sending items to her for the purpose of obtaining signatures was a complicated process, as illustrated in the four postcards and three greeting cards included here, in which Tyler requests they be sent such that she can receive them without leaving her home. The original recipient of these also sent the author a number of gifts, for which she expresses thanks in her correspondence. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Warner Brothers, Burbank 1972 - Early version of the final script for the 1973 film, directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, written for the screen by Blatty, and starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, and Linda Blair. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that accomplished the uncommon feat of being an over-the-top sensation upon its release and gaining subsequent status as a classic, with a strangeness and depth supplied by Burstyn and Sydow that only increases with repeated viewings. Another distinction of "The Exorcist" was that it walked away with 2 Oscars (including Best Screenplay for Blatty), along with 8 nominations (including Best Picture), a feat nearly unheard for a horror film. Yellow titled wrappers with titles in black, stated FINAL, dated April 24, 1972, rubber-stamped copy No. 13, and holograph ink notation reading: "WEST COAST VERSION / SAME AS NEW YORK RE-TYPED VERSION." Distribution page present. Title page present, with a credit for novelist-screenwriter Blatty. 137 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with blue revision pages throughout dated between 6/22/72 and 12/1/72, and some undated with "File Copy Change" noted at the top center. The revisions include a character name memo bound in just after the title page ("Cardinal" to "Bishop"), and a single-leaf Appendix with Merrin's speech to Satan.Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with some small closed tears and yapping at the wrapper edges, internally bound with two gold screw brads.

[Photo Albums]: Kenya 1972 and 1973

Kenya. 1972 and 1973. Four oblong quartos. Full red and green leather with gilt lettering on the front boards and each housed in matching green and red cloth clamshell boxes with contrasting green and red leather gilt labels. The albums contain a total of 349 color images measuring between 2.5" x 3" and 6.5" x 4.5". Two of the albums have some wear to their lower spines else fine in very good clamshell case worn at the corners, with some rubbing and tidemark stains along the bottom of two of the albums. Four carefully assembled photo albums documenting two separate safari trips taken in Kenya by Hilary Hook, a retired British officer, who published his adventures serving in India and Africa and as a game hunter in his biography Home From the Hill. The trips, which took place in early 1972 and 1973, are divided into two volumes each with the first pages featuring tipped-in typed sheets listing the dates of the safari, the people involved, and their itinerary. The departure point of both trips was the Masai Mara Game Reserve with the first safari heading to Lake Lagaja in the Serengeti Reserve, then over to Fort Ikoma, and back to Lake Lagaja; the second began along the River Talek before departing for Njoro, then Lake Nakuru, Samburu Game Reserve, Meru Game Reserve, Rojweru River, and finally Lake Rudolf. Both albums are carefully captioned throughout with insights on particular images, animals, environments, and the situations in which the photos were taken. Among the wildlife recorded are zebras, giraffes, lions, white rhinoceros, elephants, ostriches, hippopotamuses, cheetahs, impalas, leopards, gazelles, and monkeys, along with numerous types of birds. Some of the most notable of the images captured are a series of photos showing a gazelle carcass being eaten by vultures then chased away by the arrival of hyenas; a series of lionesses in the tall grass ambushing a family of warthogs with only one young hog escaping; a pregnant cheetah perched in a tree; a lion guarding a zebra carcass; and various shots of herding zebra, gazelles, and ostriches. There are also about two dozen images of the travelers themselves, including Hook, making camp, sharing meals, and traveling; there is also a lone shot of a Masai shepherd with his son.A wonderful collection of African safari images assembled with particular and thoughtful care. .
