WOOD ENGRAVINGS OF ERIC RAVILIOUS [Introduction by J. M. Richards]

Kensington: The Lion and Unicorn Press, Royal College of Art, 1972. First edition, LIMITED, number 80 of the second issue, which was limited to 500 copies. With 113 leaves displaying over 400 of Eric Ravilious' engravings, each leaf printed one side only, with fold-out index leaves. The title-page, front free-fly and colophon page also decorated with Ravilious engravings. Tall folio, in the original binding by Henry Brooks Ltd. of course gray cloth with a large woodcut block on the upper cover in black, the spine lettered in gilt, decorated endpapers. 19pp., 113 ff., 4 ff. index, 2ff. pp. A fine copy, the boards very slightly bowed and with trivial aging, internally very fine and as new. FIRST EDITION AND AN IMPORTANT CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ OF ENGRAVER ERIC RAVILIOUS AND ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK OF THE PRESS. Six of the over 420 engravings here were reproduced from Ravilious' original blocks, the others (for which the blocks likely no longer existed) were painstakingly reproduced from other sources, all are in their original size and the collection comprises all of his engraved works which could be found and should be considered as complete as could be made possible. The print work was beautifully done by the Curwen Press on Grosvenor Chater's Basingwerk parchment. Ravilious engraved most of these illustrations for books and other publications. His first commission, in 1926, was to illustrate a novel for Jonathan Cape. He went on to produce work both for large companies such as the Lanston Corporation and the smaller, less commercial "Fine Presses", such as the Golden Cockerel, the Curwen Press and the Cresset Press. A handful of the engravings included here were never previously published. Ravilious' career was cut tragically short when, while working as a War Artist, the RAF patrol he was flying on failed to return. After four days of searching, he and the plane's four crewmen were declared lost in action.

        Kosmicheskie dali

1972. First Edition . Signed. (SOKOLOV, A.K.) LEONOV, Aleskei Arkhipovich. Kosmicheskie dali. Moscow: Ikobrazitel'noe iskusstvo, 1972. Folio (11 by 14-1/2 inches), original marbled blue imitation leather gilt portfolio, metal and enamel cover medallion, original printed self-wrappers; pp. 34, 33 loose color plates. $2800.First edition of Russian cosmonaut A.A. Leonov's work on artificial satellites, with 35 loose color illustrations (17 folding) and 5 additional monochrome red-tone illustrations laid in, signed on the front wrapper by both the illustrator A.K. Sokolov and by Leonov. Text in Russian. This elaborate production by Russian cosmonaut A.A. Leonov concerns artificial satellites and astronautics. ""In March 1965, at the age of 30, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk in history, beating out American rival Ed White on Gemini 4 by almost three months. Floating outside his tiny Voskhod 2 capsule for 10 exhilarating minutes, Leonov felt, he writes, ""like a seagull with its wings outstretched, soaring high above the Earth"" (Air & Space, Smithsonian). Leonov went on to write extensively about his life as an astronaut and about space exploration in general. The wonderful illustrations by A.K. Sokolov display satellites and the landscapes of astronomical bodies as well as space itself in vivid color. The entirety is housed in a handsome publisher's portfolio made of blue imitation leather and bearing a raised metal and enamel medallion with a hammer and sickle. This copy contains two copies of Plate 1, for a total of 35 plates instead of the usual 34. Five additional folio red-tone monochrome illustrations, apparently also by Sokolov, have been laid in; they do not appear to be integral to this edition. The front wrapper also bears an inscription in an unidentified hand in addition to the signatures of Leonov and Sokolov.Small, faint stain on front wrapper/inscription, slight scattered foxing to verso captions of folio plates, light edge-wear to portfolio including small missing piece at top of pocket. A near-fine copy, most desirable signed.

Violin Iconography of Antonio Stradivari 1644-1737 : Treatises on the life and work of the "Patriarch" of violinmakers. Inventory of 700 known or recorded Stradivari string instruments. Index of 3,500 names of past or present Stradivari owners. Photographs of 400 Stradivari instruments with 1,500 views

Estate of Herbert K Goodkind 1972 - 780 pages (complete). A wonderful copy of this extraordinarily devoted book, THE definitive book on Stradivari. Goodkind made his fortune from real estate and became an assiduous and effective violin historian, expert and collector. The book is housed in a thick board slipcase which is scuffed and worn all about. It is however, solid, sound and sure. The wood coloured cloth boards are very healthy. Tipped in illustration with gilt border. All in excellent condition. The spine has a leather plate affixed on which is stamped the titling. The leather and the titling are fresh and smart. The spine has a dimple from the weight of the pages. Italianate end papers that are fresh and vibrant. The contents are in excellent condition. They are produced with great care and confidence. The pages are clean, clear, creamy, assured, generous of spirit and actuality. A very attractive, comprehensive, altruistic, utterly seductive book. fk [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Diane Arbus

1972. First Edition . ARBUS, Diane. Diane Arbus. Millerton, New York: Aperture, (1972). Tall quarto, original cream laminated photographic boards, original photographic dust jacket. $3800.First edition, scarce first printing of this highly influential photobook of Arbus’ work, with 80 finely screened black-and-white photogravure plates, images “at once pitiless and engaged, tough and surprisingly tender… with the power to provoke and disturb” (Roth), in original dust jacket.“A photograph,” Diane Arbus once said, “is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.” In this fundamental collection of her work, published posthumously, Arbus offers “a beautiful, sad, moving testament to the human condition” (Parr & Badger I:258). “Arbus’ unique way of not turning a blind eye satisfies something in us… In her photographs the thrill of being left out contends with the dread” (London Review of Books). “Her pictures challenge the basic assumptions on which most so-called documentary photography has been assumed to rest… Her real subject is no less than the unique interior lives of those she photographed” (John Szarkowski). Includes iconic images such as “Jewish giant at home with his parents in the Bronx, 1970” and “Identical twins, Roselle, N.J.” First edition, first printing, with “Two Girls in Identical Raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C, 1969,” suppressed in subsequent printings. Roth, 214. Open Book, 284. Only tiny bit of faint dampstaining to dust jacket verso. A beautiful copy in fine condition.

1972. First Edition . FRANK, Robert. The Lines of My Hand. (Tokyo: Yugensha, 1972). Folio, original black cloth, original slipcase with mounted cover photograph, original shipping carton. $8200.Limited first edition of Frank’s memorable autobiography in photographs, preceding the Lustrum publication of the same title, one of 500 copies with the photograph “Platte River, Tennessee” mounted on the slipcase.Kerouac called his friend Robert Frank an artist who “sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world.” “One of the key figures in postwar American art-the ‘Manet of the new photography,” Frank was once asked to describe his response to The Lines of My Hand, his unorthodox autobiography. “You look at the road you’ve been on,” he said, “and it comes back instantly” (New York Times). This beautifully produced first edition includes a number of images from Frank’s best-known work, Les Americains, a collection of documentary photographs of American life in the 1950s, particularly among the Beats, along with photographs of Frank’s family and images made during his travels in Peru, Spain, England, France. Published in Japan prior to the Lustrum publication of the same title, “Frank’s great confessional both sums up and marks the end not only of a photographic era, but a final coming to terms with the effects of WWII and the Bomb” (Parr & Badger I:238). With 30-page caption booklet in Japanese, often missing, laid in. From a limited edition of 1000 unnumbered copies, this is one of 500 copies with the slipcase photograph of “Platte River, Tennessee” (remaining copies with slipcase photograph “New York City, 1948”).         Original Photograph of Fidel Castro, Taken in East Berlin While Meeting German Civilans.

Berlin 1972 - One (1) large print press photographs of Fidel Castro taken in Berlin during his tour of East Germany to establish friendship and cooperation between German's Free Democratic Party (GDR) and the Cuban Republic. Photograph measures 40,5 x 30 cm. Very Good Condition, excellent, a rare vintage colour photograph. Fidel Castro is seen here greeting German civilians, after having made a formal public address. This striking vintage photograph shows prominent Communist leader Fidel Castro as he was gaining an important political alliance and eliciting foreign civilian support during his first tour of East Germany. Fidel Castro's visit to Berlin began on June 13, 1972 and at various points addressed the border guards that policed the Berlin Wall to prevent East Germans from escaping to the West. At Brandenburg gate on June 14 in the afternoon he addressed the men charged with shooting East Germans fleeing to West Germany as "the courageous and self-denying border guards of the Free Democratic Party (GDR) People's Army who stand guard in the front line of the entire-socialist community." Later in the evening Premier Castro addressed the Nikolay Bezarin Barracks in East Berlin. Castro spent most of his visit accompanied by Erich Honecker, leader of the German Democratic Republic. In 1974, in Havana, Erich Honecker and Fidel Castro signed an "agreement on cooperation between the German SED and the Cuban Communist Party for the years 1974-1975. The photographer is Hans-Joachim Spremberg (1943-1978), commonly known as Joachim Spremberg, a German photojournalist in East Germany. He was born in Berlin, and documented life in East Berlin, as well as the construction of the Berlin TV tower. He was selected as official photographer for several high state occasions with Free Democratic Party (GDR) Party, and also with communist politician Walter Ulbricht.       Estate of Herbert K Goodkind, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. 780 pages (complete). A very attractive, comprehensive, altruistic, utterly seductive book. fk

Osamu Nagahama: Atsuku Nagai Yoru no Shima (The Island of Long Hot Night) (lacking obi)

Haga Shoten, Tokyo 1972 - First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Printed stiff wrappers; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Osamu Nagahama. Text (in Japanese) by Mineo Higashi. 140 pp., with 136 black-and-white and monochromatic plates in cyan and green. 7-1/4 x 10-1/4 inches.[Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume III. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014)]. Near Fine (moderate creasing and wear to the extremities) in Very Good dust jacket (pronounced wear to the extremities, but intact), missing obi. From Parr & Badger: "Atsuku Nagai Yoru no Shima focuses upon the vexed subject of sexual relations between local Japanese women and American servicemen on Okinawa." The presence of the US military on Okinawa was the focus of much Japanese resentment, especially during the 1960s and 1970s, when the Vietnam war was also an issue. Shots of barbed wire fences and notices marked 'Restricted Area,' as well as the sheer sleaziness of the clubs and bars where such encounters take place, make the resentment quite clear. The book is, of course, shot in the familiar grunge Provoke style, but it has a flamboyant extra twist, with groups of images being presented as tinted monochrome -- green and blue -- rather that straight black and white."
