Canvas backed Duck. From "The Birds of America" (Amsterdam Edition)

Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Amsterdam and New York 1971 - In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. After long deliberation, the extremely complex but highly accurate process of colour photo-lithography was chosen as the appropriate printing method. The best exponents of this art were the renowned Dutch printing firm of NV Fotolitho Inrichting Drommel at Zandvoort who were willing to undertake the task of printing each plate in up to eight different colours. The original Havell edition was published on hand-made rag paper and the publishers were determined that the paper of their edition should match the original. Unhappy with the commercially available papers, they turned to the traditional paper manufacturers G. Schut & Zonen (founded in 1625), who, using 100% unbleached cotton rags, were able to produce a wove paper of the highest quality, with each sheet bearing a watermark unique to the edition: G. Schut & Zonen [JR monogram] Audubon [OT monogram]. The publishers and their dedicated team completed their task late in 1972 and the results of these labours were affectionately known as the "Amsterdam Audubon." 250 copies were published and sold by subscription, with the plates available bound or unbound. Given all this careful preparation, it is not surprising that the prints have the look and feel of the original Havell edition. John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti on 26 April 1785. From 1788 to 1803 he lived in France until he was sent to the United States to manage an estate that his father had bought in Pennsylvania. He returned to France in 1805, but his fascination with the United States had taken root and he returned again in May 1806. He married Lucy Bakewell in 1808 and together they embarked on a difficult period financially that was only to be resolved, through Audubon's unshakable and justified belief in his own abilities, with the publication of his masterpiece in 1827-1838. "The Birds of America" is the single greatest ornithological work ever produced and is the realization of Audubon's dream of traveling throughout the United States recording, natural size, every native bird then known. The 435 double-elephant folio sized plates, printed by the Havells of London, depict some 1,065 different species, the majority drawn from specimens that Audubon himself had captured. The Havell edition was expensive at the time of publication and this has not changed. Possibly the last complete copy which will ever appear on the market sold for a staggering $8,802,500 in a sale in New York in March 2000. Currently, the increasingly rare individual plates from this edition, when they do appear, generally sell for between $5,000 and $175,000 depending on the image. The quality of the Amsterdam Audubon plates is apparent to any discerning collector and it is becoming ever clearer that they offer the most attractive alternative to the Havell edition plates, given the latter's spiraling prices.         [Autograph Letter Signed to Al Bendich of Fantasy Records, With 3pp. Typescript Document]

San Francisco, 1971. Very Good. 3 1/2 pp. 11” x 8.5” letter with original mailing envelope, all entirely in Ginsberg's hand. With 3pp. typed (possibly carbon?) document of track listings, performers, and details for proposed album. Folded for mailing, mild toning. Some corner creases. Old paperclip marks to one corner. All very good. Long letter from Ginsberg to Fantasy Records producer Al Bendich concerning an apparently unrealized follow-up to Ginsberg's 1969 album of the songs of William Blake (MGM Records FTS3083). Ginsberg asks for assistance in production, editing, dubbing, and (of course) money. He discusses Grover Lewis of ROLLING STONE magazine, previous records of him and Kerouac reading poetry, the commerciality viability of poetry albums, and much more. Also included are three typed pages of album credits, track listings, and other liner-note-like particulars. Therefore, an important record of these unreleased performances.

        DRESS HER IN INDIGO.

      J. B. Lippincott Company, 1971. - First hardcover edition. Fine, bright copy in a lightly rubbed dust jacket. Published as a paperback original in 1969, this was the second Travis McGee novel to be published in hardcover by Lippincott and preceded the Robert Hale U. K. hardcover edition by one month. A wealthy old man laid up in the hospital is desperate to understand the last months of his daughter's life before she was killed in a car crash in Mexico. It was puzzling. She'd cleaned out her considerable bank account, left Miami and hadn't been heard from again. Travis McGee ventures into the steep hills and strange backwoods of Oaxaca through a bizarre world of dropouts, drug freaks, and kinky rich people--and begins to suspect the beautiful girl's death was no accident.         Auguste Renoir, Catalogue Raisonné de l'Oeuvre Peint, Figures 1860-1890

Lausanne: Editions Durand-Ruel, 1971. Lausanne: Editions Durand-Ruel, 1971. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/Very good. 2657 Folio. The first in what was to have been a set of five volumes of the catalogue raisonné of Renoir's work. This first volume, however, was the only one to appear of this particular project. It includes a preface by Charles Durand-Ruel, an introductory chapter on Renoir as a figure painter, an account of his life (pages 31 to 60 plus bibliography to page 74; illustrated in colour reproductions, typically quarter page, of some of the paintings). The catalogue itself is organised with four monochrome reproduction to one page and the four catalogue entries facing that page. There is an index with biographical notes of the models known to have sat for Renoir, and lastly an index of owners of the works. This copy is number 1160 of the limited print run of 1850 copies. Condition notes: Some sunning to the dust jacket (unclipped), which also has slight signs of wear. Book itself is firm, clean and bright, with perhaps a little age tanning to the preliminary pages. There is some just-discernible wear to the spine strip. Overall a very good copy in a very good dust jacket. (If you are looking at this listing on a site that shows photographs, please be assured- the wide angled lens used has caused distortion of the image shape, and the book is a regular-issue rectangular one!).

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

New York: Random House, 1971. New York: Random House, 1971 Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth spine over dark gray boards, Steadman's Raoul Duke illustration to the front cover in blind, spine lettered in metallic silver; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab, with Steadman's illustration of Duke and Dr. Gonzo driving through the desert, lettered in blue, red, and black. A fine copy, with a hint of wear to the extremities, fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and minor soiling to the extremities, slight crease to the front panel, else fine. A bright and pleasing copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998.. Illus. by Steadman, Ralph. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
