Investment in Human Capital. The role of education and of research

New York, The Free Press, and London, Collier-Macmillan 1971 - One volume in 8vo; pp. XII, (2), 272; original publisher’s red cloth, very slightly bumped, clean, white and blue lettering to spine, dust jacket in milar-protection a bit rubbed at spine ends, not price-clipped, name on front free endpaper, 8 pages with underlinings in blue ink, else clean and crisp, a very good+ copy in a very good+ dust jacket. First edition, first printing. “The thrust of this work is primarily to clarify the processes and opportunities that provide the incentive to invest in human capital. In this book, I consider mainly formal education and organized research. I have tried to keep the exposition meaningful to readers who would shy away from technical economics. Most of the book pertains to the investment in formal education; my hope is that it is intelligible to those who make such investment decisions, whether they be students, their parents, teachers, academic entrepreneurs, or public agencies.” (from preface) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Morning Glory on the Vine.

1971 1971 - Quarto. Original white cloth-backed blue and silver paper covered boards, title in silver to front board, silver patterned endpapers. Slight fraying to spine, minor rubbing to extremities; a very good copy. With 34 colour and line illustrations, 32 of which are full page. First and sole edition, number 18 of 100 presentation copies of this facsimile manuscript, produced by Joni Mitchell as gifts for her friends. Inscribed by Mitchell on the first page, "For Judy - the lady with the red carnation - throw it to the Greek dancer - give it on Mother's day, plant it in a window box I hope you are well and happy". The recipient was Judy Collins, with her signature in purple beneath Mitchell's inscription. Collins recorded the first commercially released version of Mitchell's song Both Sides Now in 1967. The song subsequently appeared on Mitchell's 1969 album Clouds, and the friends have performed it together live on a number of occasions. Additionally signed by Mitchell beneath the limitation number on the final page. This book features poems, drawings, and watercolours by Mitchell, including the lyrics to her 1970 song Big Yellow Taxi, and 1971 song Carey, which was inspired by her time living in a cave-dwelling hippie community in the village of Matala, on the Greek island of Crete.         Signed U.S. Flag Flown to the Moon

The Moon, 1971. fine. Silk American flag (4" X 6") carried to the Moon and back aboard Apollo 14. Fine condition (gleaming). This comes with an incontrovertible signed letter of provenance on Apollo stationery, but additionally and more pointedly (and reassuringly) this flag is titled and signed, in black ink, directly on 2 of its white stripes in the handwriting of Apollo 14 Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, "Flown to the Moon Aboard Kitty Hawk on Apollo 14, Edgar Mitchell, LMP" an undetachable authenticity, that is better than letters or certificates which can be shuffled (and shuffled they are), as the majority of these flags when seen (if seen) are glued at the corners to a printed certificate, from which they can be removed and replaced with any flag. Furthermore, left over (or faked up) certificates can have said "any flag" added, but not this one, since the signed stripes are indivisible from the flag, and they affirm exactly what it is, and do so on sight, a nice feature if you want to frame it.

        Crow Wakes. Twelve Poems.

Woodford Green, Essex: printed by Alan Tarling for Poet & Printer, 1971 - Small octavo. Original vellum-backed patterned boards, titles to spine and front in black. Fine. First edition, first printing, signed and numbered by Hughes not once but twice, one of the scarce 100 copies retained by the poet. The title page verso is signed "No. 25 Ted Hughes" and the front free endpaper signed and numbered "Ted Hughes 43/88". The printer Alan Tarling informed the bibliographers Sagar and Tabor that "These poems were excluded for personal reasons from [Hughes's] Crow opus. There were 200, a hundred each going to poet and printer plus 30 review or academic copies. None of mine was signed and each cost £2.25, though I gave some to friends and relatives. All the 'academic' copies were gratis, and said as much in an extra colophon. I don't know how TH's copies were distributed or whether or not they were signed". Hughes had in fact numbered and signed his copies on the title page verso, but later apparently overlooked that he had done this and signed what were presumably his remaining copies from 1 to 88 on the front endpapers. The vice versa order of events is also possible Sagar & Tabor A28. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa:

1971 1971 - Performed Under The Direction And Patronage Of The African Association, In The Years 1795, 1796, And 1797. With An Appendix, Containing Geographical Illustrations Of Africa. By Major Rennell. London: Printed By W. Bulmer And Co. For The Author 1799. With portrait, 3 folded maps, 6 plates of which 3 are folded and 2 leaves with music. XXVIII + 372 + XCII pp. Clean and well-preserved copy with wide margin and yellow edges bound in nice contemporary full leather gilt on spine and boards. Binding weakly marked of use, front hinge weak. * Mungo Park [1771 - 1806] was a Scottish explorer of West Africa. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River. Through a recommendation by Banks, he obtained the post of assistant surgeon on board the East India Company's ship Worcester, and 1794 Mungo Park offered his services to the African Association. This book Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa became a best-seller because it detailed what he observed, what he survived, and the people he encountered. His dispassionate — if not scientific or objective — descriptions set a standard for future travel writers to follow and gave Europeans a glimpse of Africa's humanity and complexity. Park introduced them to a vast continent unexplored by Europeans, and proposed by example that Europeans could exploit it. After his death, European public and political interest in Africa began to increase. Perhaps the most lasting effect of Park's travels, though, was their influence on European imperialism and colonialism. [Wikipedia].P.M.M 253. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS AND TWO PRINTED CHRISTMAS CARDS, SIGNED.

      - The letters (3 of which are aerogrammes) are from Mervyn Peake's widow, Maeve, to Australian author and book collector Robert Holden, and were written between September 1971 and March 1974. There are several references to Mervyn Peake's work: 'It is always a source of great joy to me when I hear how much his [Mervyn\rquote s] work has meant to others. Gradually more of his work is being re-published, as most are out of print and only obtainable in second-hand book-shops, and now even that is getting more difficult as they are bought very quickly' [September 1971]; 'You might be interested to know that the Western Australian Theatre Company put on a reading of the Titus books in Perth Cathedral on the 9th March, as part of an arts festival' [May 1st 1973]; and 'The manuscripts of Titus Groan are now in the Library of London University' [March 18th, 1974]. The other letter, dated October 1971 and still within the stamped and postmarked envelope, is an invitation to Robert Holden and his wife to visit Mrs. Peake in London. The Christmas cards, from 1971 and 1975, both feature black & white illustrations by Mervyn Peake, and are respectively inscribed 'An early happy Christmas to Ingrid & Robert from Maeve Peake' and 'With best wishes from Maeve Peake'.

Jimmie Crutchfield, Joe Black, Lorenzo "Piper" Davis, Don Newcombe, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, Harold "Hooks" Tinker, Josh Gibson Jr., Herman "Doc" Horn, Nat Peeples, Frank "Wahoo" Pearson, Joe Scott, Freddie Shepard, Warren "Daddy" O'Neil, William Powell, Joe Doyle, Sam Jethroe, Lou Dials, Joe Fillmore, Andy Porter, Jim "Lefty" Lamarque, Art "Superman" Pennington, Theodore "Double Duty" Radcliffe and 71 additional signers who played in the Negro Leagues from the 1920s to the 1940s. This book could very well be unique as it highly unlikely that a more comprehensive study and collection of signed Negro League ballplayers exists as part of one source, and with most of the original signers deceased, it cannot be duplicated. Fine condition. "Only The Ball Was White," written by Robert W. Peterson and signed by 105 former Negro League baseball players including 10 that were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. This third edition copy of Peterson's book was published by Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1970, 406 pages; the former owner painstakingly traveled the country over a 30-year period, assembling a definitive collection of Negro League autographs of which the majority are signed in ballpoint pen. The signatures are bold and neatly written on three leaves -- 21 on the title page, 30 on the dedication page, and 54 on the half-title page. The title page includes the signatures of Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Monte Irvin, Leon Day, Willie Mays, James "Cool Papa" Bell (pre-stroke), Ray Dandridge, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige, and Buck Leonard.
