POST OFFICE - LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED, WITH THE RARE PUBLISHER'S PROSPECTUS

Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1971. First Edition. First Printing, one of 250 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.162. Octavo; 3/4 pale blue paper over quarter red, white and blue star-spangled cloth, with titling and decorations printed in red and dark blue on front panel and printed spine label at spine; publisher's original acetate dustjacket; 115pp, [4]. Touch of faint, scattered foxing to upper edge of textblock and upper board edges, with a just a hint of sunning to spine; Near Fine. Together with the rare publisher's prospectus, measuring 5.5 X 7 inches, letterpress printed in navy blue and red on light blue paperstock; single 1.5" tear, with ten unnecessary pieces of tape expertly removed from the margins; Very Good+. 'Post Office' was Bukowski's first novel, an autobiographical work based on his years spent as a postal clerk and mail carrier in Los Angeles. He left his job there when John Martin offered him $100 a week for life if he wrote for his fledgling Black Sparrow Press. Martin, after publishing Bukowski's poetry in a number of chapbooks, asked him to consider writing a novel; allegedly, the novel was written in a 21 night booze-soaked blaze of glory. The cornerstone for any serious Bukowski collection, and at 250 copies, there never really were enough of these to go around. Krumhansl 38b.

THE ALEPH AND OTHER STORIES 1933-1969 - UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY IN TRIAL DUSTJACKET

London: Jonathan Cape, 1971. First Edition. New/very good +. First Printing. A Fine copy of the uncorrected proof in a Very Good+ example of the trial dustjacket. The book is bound in red wrappers with a white publisher's label printed in black. The jacket measures 3/8" taller than the proof, resulting in some creasing along the upper edge, as well as a short, closed tear at the upper corner of the front hinge. A touch of light wear to the extremities, otherwise an attractive example. The words PROOF ONLY are printed along the edge of the rear jacket flap, and this version differs in a number of ways from the jacket used on the First Hardcover Edition. An impressive collection of 20 stories by this titan of Latin American literature, and the only example of this proof copy we've seen in the trial dustjacket.

President Nixon thanks a Congressman for defeating an amendment to a military procurement bill that, if passed, ? ... would seriously jeopardize the progress we are making in ending American involvement in Vietnam and in achieving a just peace ??

Washington, D.C., June 24, 1971. 7" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ?RN? as President, 1 page, 7? x 10.5?. The White House, Washington, D.C., June 24, 1971. To Congressman C.W. (Bill) Young (R-Florida). Blind embossed with the presidential seal at top center. Light mounting remnants on verso. Fine condition. On June 17, 1971, an amendment to the military procurement bill that would have provided that none of the funds authorized in the measure could be used to support U.S. forces in Indochina after December 31, 1971, was defeated in the House by a vote of 254-158. It was offered by Michigan Democrat Lucien N. Nedzi and Ohio Republican Charles W. Whalen, Jr. The McGovern-Hatfield Amendment to a Selective Service bill was the Senate counterpart to the House Nedzi-Whalen Amendment. It was defeated 55-42 a day earlier. In this letter, President Nixon thanks Congressman Young for his vote. In part, ?This action by the House of Representatives helped materially to strengthen the efforts of this Administration to achieve a cease-fire, the release of American prisoners, and the negotiation of a just peace ... While we continue to reduce American forces in Indochina, various proposals may be advanced in Congress similar to Nedzi-Whalen. Their adoption would seriously jeopardize the progress we are making in ending American involvement in Vietnam and in achieving a just peace ...?Republican Charles William (Bill) Young (1930-2013) represented Florida in the House of Representatives from 1971 until his death in 2013. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions which nominated Nixon in 1968 and 1972, Ford in 1976, and Reagan in 1984. Young served as Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee for six years, during the last two years of the Bill Clinton presidency and G.W. Bush's first term as President, 1999-2005. At the time of his death, he was the longest serving Republican in Congress."

        Vietnam Inc

NY: Macmillan. (1971). The rare hardcover issue (thought to number 200 copies) of this classic book of photojournalism of the Vietnam war, which focused on the effects of the war on both participants and victims rather than the fighting itself. Welsh Magnum photographer Griffiths was one of the first to capture the true horror of the Vietnam war, both in its catastrophic impact on the civilian population of the impoverished agricultural nation of Vietnam and in its perversion of American values in the dehumanizing power and scale of the modern industrial war machine, and to effectively convey those ideas and images to an American audience, helping to change the general consensus view of the war by Americans. This is an ex-library copy, as evidenced by a bookplate on the front flyleaf (stamped "Withdrawn") and a circulation list and card pocket on the rear flyleaf. The pastedowns show some evidence of the removal of a previous jacket protector, under flaps. Some play in the binding, only a very good copy but in a surprisingly fine dust jacket. The hardcover is very scarce: at this moment in publishing history, "trade paperbacks" were a novel idea, able to be marketed to a younger and more impecunious audience than hardcover books, and several publishers opted to limit hardcover publication numbers of new titles in order to print more softcovers, priced lower, and aimed at college students and other young people. The Collier edition of this title is the Macmillan softcover that was issued simultaneously, and turns up many times more often than the hardcover does. In all likelihood, the hardcovers were largely targeted to the library market, which would explain the provenance of this copy. First Edition. Hardcover.
