Buffalo: The Anonym Press, 1971. First Edition. First (proof) state, one of 1,000 copies. Slim octavo (16.75cm); photo-illustrated wrappers, stapled; [4], 51, [1]pp. Signed on the title page: "Allen Ginsberg / 11/20/86 / AH / Detroit." Wrappers detached and worn but present, spine perished; text is damp-waved and edgeworn but perfectly legible; staples oxidized; Fair to Good, complete copy. With the original ticket stub from "An Evening with Allen Ginsberg" from November 20, 1986 laid in. A key work by the Beat Generation poet, ranking with Kerouac's essentials of spontaneous prose, Burroughs's cut-up method, Corso's automaticism, McClure's beast language, and Ferlinghetti's voice of the fourth person singular. The book has carried a lore since publication: printed in a modest edition of 1,000 copies in July, 1971, but not published, Ginsberg was said to have been displeased both with the design and number of errors in the text. Morgan's bibliography, suitably ambiguous, states that the edition "was destroyed by the publisher and changes made to the text and cover. Many copies still exist, but it is not known how many have survived, although more than ten have been examined by the compiler" (p.32). A legend (relayed to us through the trade, from the original owner), has it that the proof edition was dumped into Lake Erie but rescued by an enterprising fan, who used a rake to salvage a number of them from the water. The earliest (and only) printed reference we have found substantiates this claim: "Allen Ginsberg's Improvised Poetics is probably the best book ever salvaged from Lake Erie. Dumped in the Great Lake after a disastrous first printing, the book has been resurrected and reissued by Anonym Press (MacKay, Bill (ed.) The Poetry Project Newsletter, 1 Nov.1973, p.2). Of the handful of copies of the proof state we have seen, all but one were similarly damp-stained, most lacking their wrappers. Morgan calls for 100 numbered and signed copies from the run, though none we have seen were issued numbered or signed. A second, corrected edition of 2,000 copies was released by Anonym in 1972. The present copy was signed at a Detroit event in 1986; the owner relays that at first, Ginsberg refused to sign this copy, having disavowed the book, but finally relented for the sake of their friendship. A scarce survival; OCLC finds sparse holdings in 16 institutions. Provenance: ex-Ken Mikolowski, Detroit poet, editor, and founder of the Alternative Press. Morgan A22.a1

        Tulák: obcasník [The tramp: an occasional journal], nos. 6 (1971), 1, 2, 3-4, 5, 6 (1972), 1, 2 (1973).

Brno 1971 - Quartos (30 × 20.5 cm). Original staple-stitched mimeograph typescript and illustrations to rectos and versos. Very good; last page of one issue detached. Eight issues of this Czech journal of the “tramping” movement in Normalization-era Czechoslovakia, edited by the activist Miroslav “Kami” Karela. Tramping developed in the 1930s as the local equivalent to the worldwide scouting movement, as well as a predecessor of Czech environmentalism. Its participants toured the Czech countryside with knapsacks and guitars, acting out a particular kind of counter culture viewed with suspicion by the Husák government. It was heavily influenced by American culture, especially in its fascination with the Wild West, as these issues document, with mimeographed illustrations of Western landscapes, campfires, and saloons. Among the contributions are “tramp poetry,” descriptions of hikes, and information about the group and its events. Issued semi-illegally as a samizdat, with a clause noting that it was issued for “private circulation” only. Not in KVK, OCLC. Not held by the Czech National Library. Revolutionary Memorial Services for George Jackson, Field Marshal, Black Panther Party

n.p.: [Black Panther Party], 1971. Four-panel memorial booklet from the funeral of George Jackson, together with a few pieces of Soledad Brothers ephemera, in an envelope from the Soledad Brothers Defense Committee. The four-panel memorial booklet is present in two versions, one of them original, with a well-defined photo on the front cover, the other one a copy with a less clear photo. We don't know whether the copy was made for the original service in anticipation of a larger crowd, or if it was made later under some other circumstance, but for the sake of completeness both versions are included. Also included are a piece of Defense Committee letterhead pre-signed by Betsy Hammer, one of the founders, and two somewhat worn stickers in support of the Soledad Brothers. We find one holding of this booklet in OCLC, at Brown (another version for a Philadelphia satellite service is held elsewhere). The participants in the funeral program include Bobby Seale, Elaine Brown, Huey Newton, Ruchell Magee, Fleeta Drumgo and other well-known names.

Tales from the Crypt (Original screenplay for the 1972 film)

Middlesex: Amicus Productions, 1971. Draft script for the 1972 British film. Based on the comic book series by Al Feldstein amd William M. Gaines, published by EC Comics from 1950 to 1955. In a pun-filled style of ironic horror, told in a series of episodes, the film stars Sir Ralph Richardson as the cheery Crypt Keeper who spins tales about how various people have died. The episodes range in content from a creepy Santa Claus (starring Collins and Boddy, the first of the "psycho" Santas) to the consequences of disbelief in the supernatural. Several notable stars also featured in the various episodes include Ian Hendry, Peter Cushing, Robert Hutton, Barbara Murray, and Nigel Patrick. Produced by Amicus Productions, chief rival to England's most powerful horror studio, Hammer Films. The film spawned a sequel called, "The Vault of Horror" (1973), also composed of episodes based on the EC comics, and a third film, George A. Romero's "Creepshow" (1972), was produced as an homage to the look and feel of the prior films, without direct connection to the original comic book series. After more than a decade, the franchise received a TV spot: the HBO series, "Tales from the Crypt," featuring a deathly and corpselike version of The Crypt Keeper, voiced by John Kassir. The film also influenced Ernest Dickerson's "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" (1995) and Gilbert Adler's "Bordello of Blood" (1996), but the subsequent films never matched the first for its full and chilling merit. Set in the catacombs of a graveyard, shot on location in England. Fuchsia titled wrappers with die-cut window in the British style. Title page present, undated, with credits for screenwriter Subotsky and publisher Gaines (EC Comics). 82 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 80. Roneograph. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound internally with two silver brads. Lentz, p. 1577. Muir, pp. 230-232. Newman, pp. 34, 132. Weldon (1983), p. 677.

The French Connection [French Connection] (Original screenplay for the 1971 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1971. Revised draft script for the 1971 film. Produced for use on location in New York City in March and April 1971, when shooting for the film commenced there. William Friedkin made his name with this gritty adaptation of Robin Moore's 1969 nonfiction account of east coast drug trafficking and its impact on New York City undercover police officers. Perhaps the greatest of the many 1970s crime films that were shot on location in New York City, with glorious period detail in nearly every frame. The screenplay was written by African-American author Ernest Tidyman, one year after the publication of his seminal Harlem-based crime novel, "Shaft." Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Hackman) and Best Editing, along with three additional nominations. Tan titled wrappers, noted as FRIEDKIN DRAFT and REVISED on the front wrapper in holograph pencil, dated 3/23/71 and 4/26/71 in holograph pencil. Title page not present. Last leaf of text unnumbered. Photographically reproduced, with photocopied punch holes, and a few revision pages throughout, dated variously between 4/26/71 and 3/23/71. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. Grant, p. 250. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, pp. 136-137. Spicer, p. 429.

        Vietnam Inc.

NY: Macmillan. (1971). The rare hardcover issue (thought to number 200 copies) of this classic book of photojournalism of the Vietnam war, which focused on the effects of the war on both participants and victims rather than the fighting itself. Welsh Magnum photographer Griffiths was one of the first to capture the true horror of the Vietnam war, both in its catastrophic impact on the civilian population of the impoverished agricultural nation of Vietnam and in its perversion of American values in the dehumanizing power and scale of the modern industrial war machine, and to effectively convey those ideas and images to an American audience, helping to change the general consensus view of the war by Americans. This is an ex-library copy, as evidenced by a bookplate on the front flyleaf (stamped "Withdrawn") and a circulation list and card pocket on the rear flyleaf. The pastedowns show some evidence of the removal of a previous jacket protector, under flaps. Some play in the binding, only a very good copy but in a surprisingly fine dust jacket. The hardcover is very scarce: at this moment in publishing history, "trade paperbacks" were a novel idea, able to be marketed to a younger and more impecunious audience than hardcover books, and several publishers opted to limit hardcover publication numbers of new titles in order to print more softcovers, priced lower, and aimed at college students and other young people. The Collier edition of this title is the Macmillan softcover that was issued simultaneously, and turns up many times more often than the hardcover does. In all likelihood, the hardcovers were largely targeted to the library market, which would explain the provenance of this copy. First Edition. Hardcover.

Scrap: the New York Sunday supplement [subtitle varies], Nos. 1-8, December 9, 1960 through June 14, 1962. An exceptionally rare complete set

New York, [1971?] - A few illustrations in each issue. No. 1 is 4 pp. on off-white paper, 35.5 x 28.1 cm; nos. 2-8 are 8 pp. each on pale gray paper with page size 30.5 x 22.9 cm (folded in quarters from sheets about 61 x 46 cm). A spirited look at the New York art world during a period of extraordinary change. No. 2 has excerpts from a WBAI interview with the editors, "Scrap's First Tape" [a pun on Samuel Beckett's great monologue "Krapp's Last Tape"]. In no. 3 Paul Brach writes on Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns reviews the printed version of Duchamp's The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even. Geist on Rothko fills most of no. 4. No. 8 features two reviews of Harold Rosenberg's Arshile Gorky: the Man, the Time, the Idea. Now, about this complete set: Scrap originally appeared on the cheapest newsprint, and the few copies available are usually browned, chipped, and very brittle. Some time after 1969, when Geist lent—not gave—a set to the Smithsonian for microfilming, he apparently decided to make a limited number of sets on better paper. MoMA has this version both bound and unbound and assigns it a date of 1971(?). That sounds plausible; I first encountered copies in 1974. A close comparison of both versions confirms that the much crisper second printing was made from original masters or negatives, not reproduced from the 1960-1962 newsprint copies. OCLC locates 15 full or partial sets, some of those in microform.

        Monty Python's Flying Circus

N.p. [London]: N.p. [BBC], 1971-2. Thirteen typed camera scripts, each secured with a split pin to top left. Slight rusting of pins to some episodes, with consequent marking to surrounding paper. Some episodes marked up by studio cameramen on day of recording. The entire third series (of four), comprising nine original, first-state camera typescripts, the remaining four on different paper stock, and possibly of later origin (see below), EPISODE TWO (ONE OF THE FIRST-STATE SCRIPTS) SIGNED ON TITLE PAGE BY CHAPMAN, IDLE, PALIN AND JONES ON DAY OF RECORDING. Series Three of Python ran from 19 October 1972 to 18 January 1973, and comprises thirteen episodes. Tensions were by then growing within the group, and John Cleese, worried that they were beginning to repeat themselves, had to be pressured into staying on. (Cleese had a point: he would play no part in Series Four, and episode 13 of this series marks his last Python appearance). The BBC was getting nervous, too. Many sketches had moved on from the pure silliness of the first two series, and had become much more savage, surreal and, in many cases, downright unpleasant. Editorial interventions from the Corporation became more frequent, increasing tension within the group still further. Despite all this, much classic Python is to found in these scripts: The Cheese Shop and Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days (Ep. 4); Whicker's Island (Ep. 5); and Gumby Brain Specialist (Ep. 6), among many other indelible moments. The Proust Competition sketch of Episode 9 was censored by the BBC: they objected to Chapman's use of the word 'masturbation' and insisted the soundtrack be cut at the (in)appropriate moment. And Episode 13 carries three sketches which were never broadcast at all: Revolting Cocktails, Sculptor and Wee-Wee Wine Cellar. Cleese thought Sculptor under-rehearsed, and Cocktails and Wine Cellar childishly scatalogical. His fellow Pythons agreed with him on the first sketch, the BBC agreed with him on the other two. All three were recorded; all three were cut; all three are now lost. Of these thirteen camera scripts, the provenance of four is unsure. Episodes 1, 4 (which lacks the title page), 6 and 7 are on a different (white) paper stock, and appear to have been photocopied from originals -- the annotations of the camera crews are not pencilled on, but were there when the copy was made. However, all four are secured with split pins to top left (like the other nine), the pins are of the same make and vintage as the other nine, and there is rusting to the pins and browning to the surrounding paper similar to that found on the other nine, suggesting they are of a similar vintage. This becomes more certain with the evidence provided by Episode 11, a yellow script with white, presumably rewritten pages inserted into it. Of the nine first-state scripts, Episodes 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 12 and 13 all carry camera crew annotations (some more than others); Episodes 10 and 11 are unmarked. Episode 13 is of a different paper stock, and is a deeper yellow, and Episodes 9, 10 and 11 have been subjected to some later nibbling by mice at the leading edge (not affecting text). All are in condition consistent with their age and usage, with some rusting to pins, and light (non-mouse-related) edgewear. From time to time a single Python script will surface. Here is the complete third series, signed by four of its creators, of one of the most influential comedy shows ever made.

Note this work is presented as unbound sheets, with the lithographs printed on the same paper as the text. Franz Kafka (1883-1924) has been called "the Dante of the 20th century" and Nabokov placed him among the greatest writers of that century. His writings often feature isolated protagonists faced by bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensible social-bureaucratic powers, from which has arisen the term, "Kafkaesque" (N.B., info on author from Wiki). This short story an excerpt from "The Penal Colony", per a note on the copyright page. ***DESCRIPTION: Unbound sheets, ten signatures total, eight full-page lithographs by Claire Van Vlient with tissue guards, the lithographs printed directly from the stones drawn by the artist (with no printing on the reverse side of the page containing the lithographs); folio size (approximately 12.75" tall), 12 printed leaves total, text Monotype Times New Roman, printed letterpress, paper Zerkall Butten; limited edition of 100 copies, this no. 48. Talking About Oz (Vintage audio reel)

N.p.: N.p., 1971. Vintage audio recording on three quarter inch tape, three minutes and 30 seconds long, of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Radio Free London circa 1971. The couple spend the time advocating for free speech and on behalf of the founders of "Oz" magazine, then on trial for obscenity and "conspiracy to corrupt public morals.""Oz" was one of the most influentially designed and controversial underground magazines of the psychedelic era, and the trial became something of a cause celebre among the British left, with Lennon and Ono leading the charge, releasing a benefit single featuring the tracks "God Save Oz" and "Do the Oz" to raise funds for the defense and recording numerous radio spots such as this one to publicize the issue. In this recording, Lennon and Ono discuss the case and, after taking some shots at the presiding judge (whom Lennon refers to as "an old wanker"), Lennon sings the Harry Lauder standard "Keep Right on to the End of the Road," with Ono singing the repeated line "Let's not fall asleep." The recording ends with Ono saying "don't fall asleep fellas" and Lennon adding "and girls." This differs of other Radio Free London spots, which typically ended with Lennon signing off by saying "radio free witness," leading us to believe this is a variant recording or an outtake of similar material used for "The Lost Lennon Tapes" radio series.Reel in Fine condition, housed in a Very Good cardboard box with Lennon's and Ono's names and the title typed on the front. Also included in a CD-R containing the audio.
