Ouch. The Curiously Strong Vol IV No2 October 31st.

[London:] The Curiously Strong Press, 1971 - Quarto, pp. 28. Original reverse-colour paper covers, wire-stitched, front cover lettered in black on purple, rear cover lettered in purple on black. Single pen annotation to p. 1, correcting "freaming" to "dreaming". Slight rubbing and a few nicks to extremities, some gentle creasing to front cover, light foxing to endpapers. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page. A scarce copy of the author's first published work, and the first of only three volumes of poetry. Ackroyd dates his signature "London: November 25, 1990". The Curiously Strong was a poetry magazine established by the American poet Fred Buck in the late 1960s and later edited by Ian Patterson until its cessation a decade later. Its name was a nod to the Altoids mints catchphrase, and the single author pamphlets were sent, for free, to anyone who sent a stamp to the editor. It published early work by writers such as Peter Riley, John James, Barry MacSweeney, Anthony Barnett, and Nick Totton. Ouch, along with Ackroyd's second and third volumes of poetry, London Lickpenny (1973) and Country Life (1978), was later included in a collection entitled The Diversions of Purley and Other Poems (1987). This edition is extremely rare commercially and there are only four copies located in institutional holdings worldwide (WorldCat, Copac). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Portrait of Paul and Linda McCartney

OFFERING: A large Kodachrome II print developed by Kodak from the April 1971 Malibu shoot for Paul and Linda McCartney and given by Paul McCartney to Vincent Romeo, his personal manager with McCartney Productions Ltd. No other example of the print is known to have been offered for sale. RARITY: Exceedingly Rare. PROVENANCE: Purchased from the first auction of music memorabilia from Vincent Romeo's collection. THE PRINT: The shot was taken with a Pentax SLR 35mm camera in early April 1971 in Malibu and printed from the transparency using the K-12 Development Process. The 276 x 353 mm Kodachrome II print has never been framed and is sleeved loose, as issued in the Kodak color enlargement folder. This is not a print of the widely circulated image used for the iconic April 16, 1971 LIFE magazine cover. One of a series of shots taken for possible promotion of the recording, RAM, it was shot at the same time of day as the LIFE cover shot and Paul and Linda are dressed in the same clothes, but as evidenced by the composition with its exquisite balance of light and shadow and the smaller grouping of yellow flowers in the background, it was taken closer in with a wider aperture. Because of its extraordinary intimacy, it was expressly printed for Paul and Linda McCartney by Kodak in July 1971, Kodak's stamped seal on the rear stating, "A color print made by Kodak, July 71R." With its beautiful color composition and moving contrasts of emotional openness and reticence, it communicates Paul and Linda's love in a way never surpassed. CONDITION: Better Than Good. Photo Print: top outer corner with 2 tiny scratches, one-the size of a very small grain of sand, top tips with light wear, outer edges with light bend that won't be seen mounted and framed. Scrutinized in extreme close-up in bright light, a slight dulling of Paul's hair can be seen on the left side, likely from cleaning: there is no other color deterioration. Rear: finger smudge and small black bar, marks not visible viewing the print. / The original Kodak color enlargement, cardstock folder: some handling wear, small stain at top edge, light soiling, upper side with auction number in pencil, a few bubbles. VINCENT ROMEO: Before becoming personal manager for Paul McCartney at MPL, he was a leading agent with CMA and represented Cat Stevens and Grand Funk Railroad. Recommended to Paul & Linda by Lee V. Eastman, Linda's father, a prominent New York entertainment lawyer, who had been retained as counsel by Grand Funk Railroad, he left CMA for MPL. After, he became vice president of artist development for CBS International Records. BACKGROUND: The day shoot is well documented. Shots were taken by the garden near the pool, at the Malibu beach house rented by Paul and Linda for the family, including their two girls, Heather (by Linda's first marriage) and Mary (b. 1969, their first child together). Linda was three months pregnant with Stella. Recording had been finished in March and publicity was proceeding for its mid-May release. Paul and Linda were working on the illustrated RAM songbook. Henry Diltz, already a well-known photographer of rock musicians, was asked to come for his "fly on the wall thing". HENRY DILTZ: had first met Linda in the summer of 1966 at the Modern Age Photo Lab in New York while working on a photo shoot of the Lovin' Spoonful. A leading rock photographer of the 60's-70's California rock music scene and the official photographer of Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival, he would also be flown to the Virgin Islands by Paul and Linda in 1977 to take photos for a remembrance book while Wings was finishing tracks for "London Town". Photographs for more than 250 album sleeves are credited to him, including the first album of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Doors' "Morrison Hotel", James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James", Jackson Browne's eponymous debut, and the Eagles' "Desperado". A documentary, "Under the Covers" discusses his album cover collaborations with Gary Burden. The comprehensive book on his work is "Henry Diltz: Rock On: The Photographs" with foreword by Graham Nash.

        Death in Venice

Aquarius Press, Baltimore, Maryland 1971 - First edition. Fine in box/case. Large Folio. Printed on Fabriano Classico. From a numbered edition of 122 with various plate sizes and sheet size measuring 22 1/4 by 14 7/8 inches. Each print is titled and editioned in pencil. A leading American printmaker and satirist, Warrington Colescott continues the tradition of Francisco Goya, William Hogarth, and Honoré Daumier. Residing in Wisconsin and long-affiliated with the Department of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he is widely known for his innovative use of intaglio techniques. In 1970, Aquarius Press (Baltimore, Maryland; New York) invited him to submit a list of texts he might wish to illustrate for a deluxe livre d’artiste—a tradition of matching author and artist that originated in Paris in the late nineteenth century. Colescott immediately named Death in Venice as his first choice, Thomas Mann’s celebrated novella of 1912 that had first captivated him in college. The following year he completed and saw published a portfolio of ten color etchings illustrating Mann’s text. 10 color etchings and aquatint with embossing, illustrating Thomas Mann's novel. On page 40 of "The Prints of Warrington Colescott" author Mary Weaver Chapin notes: '.Aquarius Press invited him to submit ideas for a livre d'artist.and by December 1970 they had a contract. Colescott then spent a week in Venice making sketches of the aging hotels along the Lido, the pigeons in the Piazza San Marco and the gondoliers. The synergy between Mann's text and Colescott's visual language and graphic expression is supberb. Colescott captures the genteel decline of the city's buildings and monuments, collaging many impressions recalled through layers of memory, and the particular quality of sunlight in watery Venice.Colescott subsumes his own quirky style to a certain extent to harmonize with the writer's style and produce a cohesive vision."         Collection of letters to Jagdish Mehra

1971-79. Salam, Abdus (1926-96). Collection of correspondence consisting of five typed / autograph letters signed to historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2002), plus three letters to foundations regarding grants for Mehra’s Historical Development of Quantum Theory; complete list available on request. 13 sheets total, plus covers for several of the letters. V.p., 1971-79. Very good. Salam, one of the leading figures in 20th century theoretical physics, made notable contributions to quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, receiving a share of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics for his contribution to the electroweak unification theory (the unified description of the weak and electromagnetic interactions between two elementary particles). He was the first Pakistani and first Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in science, and the second person from a Muslim country, after Anwar Sadat (Peace, 1977), to receive any type of Nobel award. The correspondence includes four typed letters signed from Salam to Mehra regarding Mehra’s contribution to Aspects of Quantum Theory (1972), a festschrift in honor of Paul Dirac’s seventieth birthday edited by Salam and E. P. Wigner. Salam praised Mehra’s paper (“’The golden age of theoretical physics’: P. A. M. Dirac’s scientific work from 1924 to 1933”) as “a wonderful article” and told Mehra that “Dirac saw and liked your paper.” Also present is an autograph letter signed from Salam to Mehra discussing an unidentified paper by Mehra: “Parts of it are splendid—make me blush . . . However, one part could be disastrous . . . I hope the friends [?] did not take it over as it is, because it could do damage . . .” The remaining three pieces are letters of recommendation from Salam to officials at various foundations to whom Mehra had applied for grants to complete his Historical Development of Quantum Theory (1982-2001).
