        Moonchild: A Prologue

Samuel Weiser Inc., New York 1970 - 335 Pages in 23 Chapters. Black boards with gold lettering on spine. Four blue inked-lines of Christmas 1975 gift inscription. No other defects noted to this otherwise As New book with flawless interior text pages. Dust jacket has a 3/8 inch closed tear on the front has two one-inch tears on the back cover. Dust jacket flap is price-clipped. Moonchild is a novel written by the British occultist Aleister Crowley in 1917. Its plot involves a magical war between a group of white magicians, led by Simon Iff, and a group of black magicians over an unborn child. It was first published by Mandrake Press in 1929 and its recent edition is published by Weiser. In this work, numerous acquaintances of Crowley appear as thinly disguised fictional characters. Crowley portrays MacGregor Mathers as the primary villain, including him as a character named SRMD, using the abbreviation of Mathers' magical name. Arthur Edward Waite appears as a villain named Arthwaite, and the unseen head of the Inner Circle of which SRMD was a member, A.B. is theosophist Annie Besant. Among Crowley's friends and allies Allen Bennett appears as Mahatera Phang, the dancer Isadora Duncan appears as Lavinia King, and her companion Mary D'Este, who helped Crowley write his magnum opus Magick: Book 4under her magical name Soror Virakam, appears as Lisa la Giuffria. Cyril Grey is Crowley himself, while Simon Iff is either an idealized version of an older and wiser Crowley or his friend Allen Bennett. Authors note dated London 1929 says This book was written in 1917, during such leisure as my efforts to bring America in the War on our side allowed me. Hence my illusions on the subject and the sad showing of Simon Iff at the end. Need I add that, as the book itself demonstrated beyond all doubt, all persons and incidents are purely the figment of a disordered imagination.         In the Night Kitchen

New York: Harper & Row Publishers, 1970. First edition of Sendak's classic work. Boldly signed by Maurice Sendak on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine first-issue price-clipped dust jacket with the correct code. The Caledecott medal is adhered to the front panel. Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" (Silvey, 586). Having received nine awards, The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident, but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity, which is fully depicted, and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently, the book's release in the United States sparked debate, with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list by the American Library Association.

Scanlan's Monthly Issues 1-8 (Complete Run)

New York and Quebec: Scanlan's Literary House, 1970. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. Eight issue complete run of Scanlan's Monthly, a political muckraker magazine edited by Hinckle and Zion. It ran from March 1970 to January 1971. Always controversial, the magazine was the subject of an FBI investigation during the Nixon administration. It was boycotted by printers as being "un-American" by 1971. Scanlan's is best remembered for featuring several articles by Hunter S. Thompson and especially for what is considered the first instance of "gonzo" journalism with his piece entitled "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved". Complete run including the so-called "Supressed Issue". All issues in good to very good condition. Well-thumbed, but still in collectible condition.

Lovely Grace Kelly ALS to Leonard Lyons, newspaper columnist

Monaco, August 7, 1970. 6" x 7.5". "Single page ALS, on stationary with Royale letterhead, 6"" x 7.5"". Signed and dated by Princess Grace (Grace Kelly), as ""Grace"", and dated ""Aug. 7th, 1970"" Neatly penned with strong contract. Expected center fold else near fine.A lovely letter scripted by Grace Kelly to Leonard Lyons, an American newspaper columnist who travelled the world and sent back daily columns, sometimes giving his column to New York bound travelers with a request they contact the paper upon arrival. He avoided writing about scandal in his column, and thus earned the trust of the many figures he met. Grace Kelly's letter to him thanked him for his column on Montecattini and the photos of Caroline. Her letter to him is shown in full below:'""Dear Leonard, Aug. 7th, 1970Many thanks for the recent column on Montecattini + the photos of Caroline that you sent earlier -I took both Albert + Caroline to the states at the end of June + put them into summer camps - I never got to N.Y. as I had to rush back here for our summer festival - so I went directly from Phila. To Paris. I just couldn't face the confusion of Kennedy airport in summer -The children are having a great time + won't get back here until the 25th we miss them terribly but it is a wonderful experience for them. Many affectionate thoughts to you + your family. Hope we get to see you in N.Y. before too long -SincerelyGrace""Rainer and Kelly married in 1956, and had 3 children, whom she referenced in the letter. Albert and Caroline would have been 12 years old at the time of the writing of her letter:· Caroline Louise Marguerite, born January 23, 1957· Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre, born March 14, 1958, current Prince of Monaco· Stephanie Marie Elisabeth, born February 1, 1965Princess Grace Kelly was known for her incredible regal presence and serenity. Her wonderful warm letter to Leonard evokes both. Her tragic accidental passing in 1982, at the young age of 52, leaves little in the way of signed pieces by her, with this example in wonderful highly collectible condition."
