        Troubles

London: Jonathan Cape, 1970.. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good+. Book is clean although there is some minor water staining to top of front board. It has just leached through onto the very top of the fixed and free end papers. Previous owners initials and '70 written in red on end paper. Jacket has slight wear at base of spine from an old label (and on both panels where it went around) but it is not that noticeable unless looked at closely...best to look at the images. Minor wear at base of spine and nicks to corners. Light wear to spine hinges and a couple of tears at top of spine that have been repaired internally with archival paper. A water stain is visible on the inside of the jacket at top of spine but it does not show at all when looked at from the outside. Tiny loss at corners and front top spine hinge. The colours on the jacket are pretty bright and fresh and overall the jacket looks ok (certainly better than the list of faults might indicate). Price present. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel.

Preliminary cover design for Penny Candy, by Edward Fenton

      c. 1970. Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 8 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches. Archivally matted and framed. Preliminary artwork for the cover design of Fenton's book, a fantasy story based on the English "Tinker Tailor" rhyme. A copy of the trade paperback edition of the book, which was published by Holt in 1970, is included in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. The key differences between this preliminary drawing and the finished work are most discernible in the five children standing in front of the candy counter: in the preliminary artwork, the children's clothing is colored, their arrangement is different, as is their height in relation to the counter. Gorey also used some ink flourishes to make the titling, which lines up vertically on either side of the central image, appear more like pieces of candy. This was not used in the published version. Gorey's watercolor work for published books seldom appears on the market. Very fine in an attractive black acrylic and resin frame.

        One Hundred Years of Solitude

NY: Harper & Row. (1970). The uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of the Nobel Prize winner's masterwork. This proof copy is in the very fragile "padbound" format, which presumably accounts for its extreme scarcity: padbound proofs, because of the way they're constructed, tend to lose their front or rear covers over time. This is a near fine copy. This proof differs from the published edition by the inclusion of a review of the Spanish language edition of the book. . First Edition. Softcover.
