New York, Chekhov Press. 1970 - 8°. 232 pp. Original publishers cardboard. Very good condition, minor stains on cover. "Stop in the desert" is the second book of poems by Joseph Brodsky and the first composed by the poet himself. Here the rare first edition and it is the first It is considered the result of the early works of the poet. With a short biography of Brodsky and an introduction by H.H. Joseph Brodsky (1940 – 1996) was a Russian and American poet and essayist. Born in Leningrad, he ran afoul of Soviet authorities and emigrated to the United States. A Halt in the Desert . . .included seventy short poems, two long ones ("Isaac and Abraham" and "Gorbunov and Gorchakov"), and four translations from John Donne. Some of the content overlaps with that of Short Poems and Narratives ("Isaac and Abraham" and twenty-two early pieces), but more than two-thirds is new work. He discarded everything he considered imitative or immature . . . he laid out the sections and the order of poems himself." [Attributes: First Edition]

        TIRESIAS

Gehenna Press, Northampton 1970 - One of 50 copies of which this is number 49, signed and numbered by Leonard Baskin. Bound in full vellum and laid into a vellum and cloth traycase. With Mr. Baskin's frontispiece etching of a bust of Tennyson and four other etchings, two on blue paper and one in three colors. Leonard Baskin believed that "The book is noteworthy for its title page, enhanced by a wood-engraving of the title by John E. Benson, probably the world's finest lapidarian, a great stonecutter in a great tradition" [Gehenna Press, The Work of Fifty Years, 68]. This copy with foxing to the pastedown of the traycase, and to the front board. The traycase has some light soiling. It is noted in The Work of Fifty Years that "About half of the edition [of 50] was destroyed by water damage at the press in 1970" -- perhaps that unfortunate event resulted in the foxing to this copy. (Gehenna Press: The Work of Fifty Years, 68. ). Very Good binding.

[HOW TO MAKE CAMPARI IN SOVIET KITCHEN]

[Soviet cooking book]. Handwritten album, with newspaper clippings to illustrate courses. [N.p., 1970-80s]. 265 pp. 29x21 cm. Cloth folder. Fine. An interesting and somewhat naive document of the time. Apparently the complier of this book tried to include as many 'international' recipes as possible, often putting the originating country in brackets. A lot of the clippings come from foreign newspapers. The ingredients however more or less match the assortment of the Soviet food stores. As a result we can see the attempt to diversify often scarce meals using the available ingredients. The sections included in the book are salads and cold starters; starters; meat, poultry and wildfowl; garnish, potatoes, cereals; vegetables; fish; conservation of food; dough products; deserts, jams and conservations of fruits and berries; pickles and marinades; desert, beverages, cocktails; other. The section on cocktails contains some of the simplest cocktails imaginable like 'Cocktail with beer and tea' which is essentially the 50% of cold tea with 50% of beer and lemon on the side (optional). Cocktail 'Cubanito' reminds us of Сuban-Soviet relationship, however the author of the book was not familiar with the Havana Club rum, so it was called 'Abana club' instead. Altogether the book gives 30 recipes for cocktails, including Campari, mulled wine, 'Old Russian', 'Polar Night', 'Winter tale', 'Flaming iceberg', etc. The author gives us 20 coffee variations, half of which contain alcohol. There are special subsection of recipes from the stale bread (9 recipes) including the method on how to freshen up stale bread. Author included advices on table manners: if you are taking the sugar cube out of the bowl, don't touch the cubes near it; don't blow on the soup to cool it; at the end of the book there are the tables of the cutlery that are appropriate for different courses. It's hard to imagine how one should obtain different types of forks in the reality of deficit.

Economist on Wall Street: Notes on the Sanctity of Gold, the Value of Money, the Security of Investments, and Other Delusions.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1970. First edition of this classic collection of early Bernstein writings. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For William- To show Wall Street has some good things about it. Peter Bernstein." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Preface by Gilbert Kaplan. Peter Bernstein's Economist on Wall Street is a collection of writings from 1955 to 1970. The book is especially interesting because so many of Bernstein's observations reflect the most important issues of the presentâthe outlook for inflation and its control, the intricacies of monetary policy, the future of the dollar, and the dilemmas of household finances. Bernstein was also concerned with developments in portfolio management, including the new influence of institutional investors and rules for optimal asset mixes. He provides light touches, too, as he indulges in fantasies and philosophical musings over a wide variety of topics.

Ursula Koering Collection of Original Children's Book Illustrations and Cover Art, 1947-1970

(New York), 1970. Very Good. An archive of 10 groups of original book illustrations by Ursula Koering, an accomplished New Jersey artist and illustrator of more than 200 children's books. The collection includes dust jacket cover art and in-text illustrations for nine of her best known children's books and one picture book for young adults. The archive includes Koering's color pastel and color wash cover art drawings, including several variant versions of the same illustrations redrawn in pen and ink, and her in-text pen and ink line drawings. Most of the drawings are drawn on publisher's thick wove-paper sheets or directly on artists boards, and several have accompanying pen and ink color separations drawn on acetate overlays. Most are very good or near fine, with scattered production measurements and notes in the margins. Each set of drawings includes a copy of the printed book for comparison.Born in Vineland, New Jersey, Koering grew up on a small farm and began drawing at an early age, enrolling in weekend classes at the Philadelphia College of Art starting at the age of eight. She later attended full-time to study sculpture, then switched back to drawing upon beginning her career as an illustrator and art teacher at an all-girls school in New Jersey. Her favorite subjects were people in costume, and animals, both of which figure prominently in the 10 collections here.A detailed list of the book illustrations:BODEN, Hilda. Storm Over Wales. New York: David McKay Company, Inc. 1969. Koering's jacket cover art (of two American girls confronted by a rifle-wielding farmer in a remote corner of Wales), and title page drawing for this mystery story. The cover art consists of: the original color pastel drawing on paper (6.5" x 8.25"), a later finished version (as it appeared on the cover of the published book) drawn in pen and ink on thick wove paper (7" x 9"), and two pen and ink color separations drawn in black on acetate overlays. The title page drawing is on thick paper (5" x 4"). A few production measurements and penciled notes in the margins, near fine. A total of three artworks. Of particular interest are the subtle changes Koering made to the cover design, between the color drawing and the pen and ink drawing. The gun-wielding Welsh farmer appears considerably more menacing in the latter pen and ink drawing, made for this mystery story about three American girls on holiday in an old trailer in deepest Wales, where they hope to explore the rugged countryside and make friends with the locals. Instead, they encounter open hostility, and get themselves swept up in the current anti-English nationalism sweeping across Wales. Accompanied by a fine copy of the book in near fine dust jacket for comparison.BOWER, Barbara [Barbara E. Todd]. Worzel Gummidge. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons (1947). Koering's original frontispiece drawing for this classic children's book. Pen and ink on thick wove paper (9" x 13.5"), taped at the edges onto a mat frame, with a publisher's production label on the bottom edge of the mat. Some very light soiling to the upper left corner of the image, very good. A finely detailed line drawing of Worzel Gummidge, bird on hat and his beloved Aunt Sally on his knee, and John and Susan of Scatterbrook Farm. A charming drawing, accompanied by a very good copy of the book in very good dustwrapper for comparison.HAYNES, William D. Mystery at Squaw Peak or The Missing Masterpiece. New York: Atheneum 1965. Koering's complete jacket cover art (of three boys carrying an old master is painting) and interior illustrations for this children's book. The cover art consists of the original color pastel drawing on laid paper (6.5" x 8.25"), another version of the same design in pen and ink on artist's thick wove paper (11" x 14"), and two pen and ink color separations drawn in black on acetate overlays. The interior artwork consists of 13 pen and ink drawings on thick paper (7.5" x 10"). A few production measurements and notes color-penciled in the margins, near fine. Koering's fine suite of drawings brings to life this part Old West and part modern Hollywood gangster mystery about three children who get involved in fighting off some dangerous marauders. Accompanied by a fine copy of the book in near fine dust jacket for comparison.MacKELLAR, William. The Smallest Monster in the World. New York: David McKay Company, Inc. (1969). Koering's complete jacket cover art (of a father and son in the Scottish Highlands), and interior illustrations for this children's book. The cover art consists of the original color pastel drawing on textured paper (6.5" x 8"), the same design redrawn in pen and ink on artist's thick wove paper (9" x 11"), and two pen and ink color separations drawn in black on thick tissue overlays. The interior artwork consists of 14 pen and ink drawings on thick wove paper (ranging in size from about 3.5" x 6.5" and 6" x 9"). A few small production measurements and notes penciled in the margins, near fine. William MacKellar tells the adventure story of young Wullie Watson, who is convinced that a prehistoric monster lurks deep beneath the placid surface of Loch Moyne. Koering's drawings vividly portray Wullie Waton's run-ins with leprechauns, village folk, and the monster itself. Accompanied by a near fine copy of the book in near fine dust jacket.MARK, Polly. Tani. New York: David McKay Company (1964). Koering's original jacket cover art and complete set of interior illustrations for Polly Mark's children's book about a young Iban girl in Borneo. The cover art consists of a color wash drawing on laid paper, the same design redrawn in pen and ink on artist's thick wove paper (12" x 15.5"), and two pen and ink color separations drawn in black on acetate overlays. The interior drawings consist of 15 in-text illustrations and seven chapter headpiece vignettes on wove paper (some are mounted on artist's boards). Also included is the title page drawing mounted on stiff paper with a tissue overlay, and a proof copy mounted on artist's board along with a publisher's blurb. A few small production measurements and notes penciled in the margins, overall near fine. Accompanied by a very good copy of the book Inscribed by the author in very good dust jacket for comparison.MARK, Polly. The Way of the Wind. New York: David McKay Company 1965. Koering's complete jacket cover art and interior illustrations for Polly Mark's second children's book about a young Iban couple in Borneo The cover art consists of: the original color wash drawing on laid paper, the same design redrawn in pen and ink on artist's board (9" x 11"), and two pen and ink color separations drawn in black on thick plastic overlays. The two interior line drawings (the title vignette and divisional vignette) are on thick wove sheets of paper. A few small production measurements penciled in the margins, near fine. Koering made subtle changes to the cover design, between the initial color wash drawing and the published pen and ink drawing. The Way of the Wind, also based on Mark's journals kept in the Sarawak area in Borneo, tells the coming of age story of two Iban children torn between the old and the new. Accompanied by a near fine copy of the book Inscribed by the author.O'NEILL, Hester. The Picture Story of Sweden. New York: David McKay Company (1953). Koering's jacket cover art, two pen and ink drawings of a young athlete (front cover) and three children at play in the hills (rear cover), drawn side by side on a large sheet of paper mounted on artist's board inside a mat frame (measuring about 18" x 11" to the edges of the mat). Two publisher's labels (on the bottom of the front mat and on the back of the board), scattered thin adhesive staining at the edges, very good. Both drawings aptly depict O'Neill's celebratory survey of Swedish culture and industrial arts for young readers. An accomplished pair of drawings, accompanied by a good ex-library copy of the book with the front jacket cover laid down onto the front board for comparison (lacking the rear jacket cover).RANDALL, Janet. Buffalo Box. New York: David McKay Company (1969). Four original in-text illustrations by Koering for this children's book. The pen and ink line drawings are on thick paper sheets (about 8" x 7"). A few small production measurements penciled in the margins, near fine. Set in 1877, the year when the Nez Perce Indians were expelled from their ancestral lands in Idaho, the story of Willow Girl (who is entrusted with the secret of her tribe's buffalo box), and her terrible 2000 mile journey fleeing from U.S. soldiers. A near complete set of the in-text illustrations (printed half-page in the book): "Battle Cry," "The Buffalo Box," "Trial Without End," and "Into the Dark Water." Accompanied by a near fine ex-library copy of the book in near fine dust jacket for comparison.THOMPSON, Mary Wolfe. Wilderness Winter (New York): David McKay Co. (1968). Koering's jacket cover art for Mary Thompson's award-winning saga about a pioneer family in Vermont. The artwork includes a production proof on textured paper with a tissue overlay. A few production measurements and notes in the margins, near fine. Koering's romantic drawings of brother and sister, and newly-wed couple, neatly evokes Thompson's meticulously researched and observant portrayal of 18th Century pioneer life. Accompanied by a near fine ex-library copy of Wilderness Winter in fine dust jacket.THOMPSON, Mary Wolfe. Wilderness Wedding (New York): David McKay Co. (1970). The artwork consists Koering's jacket cover art, a pen and ink drawing on thick artist's paper, and a pen and ink color separation drawn in black on a thick tissue overlay. Pen and ink drawing on wove paper (8.5" x 10.5"), with the publisher's printed production label on the back. Very lightly ruled in pencil, fine. Set in Denmark in the year 1880, the story by Bessie White tells the fairy-like tale of the Holbek children who fall in with a stranger who grants their wish for a pair of storks to bring good luck to their house. A charming drawing, accompanied by a near fine copy of the book in very good dust jacket for comparison.

        Meyer Lansky

December 26, 1970. Autograph Letter Signed “Love /Dad,” one page, 8.5” x 10.75”. [Herzlia/Tel-Aviv, Israel], December 26, 1970. On lightweight lined paper. To Meyer Lansky’s daughter Sandra. Fine condition.

In part, “It is true we all would have liked it better if we were all together for the Holiday but we can’t have everything they say and as long as we don’t lose our love and devotion for one another we will feel that we are present. I admire your devotion Sandra … I don’t know if you received all my mail I hope you did if not I repeat. Send blank checks immediately and follow up with a check book … The Lawyer received the books…”

Robert Lacey in “Little Man: Meyer Lansky and the Gangster Life” (Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1991) writes, “In 1964, Meyer’s old friend Doc Stacher had avoided the worst consequences of a conviction for tax evasion by consenting to deportation and going to Israel to live. In July 1970, Meyer Lansky decided not to wait for the conviction – or anything else … Lansky landed in Israel on July 27, 1970 … He wanted to stay in Israel – and he wanted to live there not as a visitor, but as an Israeli citizen.”

On December 7, 1970, Lansky requested Israeli citizenship under Israel’s Law of Return which gives any Jew the right to be granted Israeli citizenship. However, it denies citizenship to a Jew “with a criminal past, likely to endanger the public welfare.” A week later, in an affidavit, Lansky stated that he was living exclusively on dividends from his real estate and oil investments, and his annual income was “roughly $60,000 (before taxes).”

In March 1971, Lansky was charged with being involved in a conspiracy to skim from the Flamingo Hotel, his old Las Vegas venture with Bugsy Siegel. In May, Lansky’s U.S. passport was revoked and in September, his application for Israeli citizenship was denied. “Meyer Lansky v. the State of Israel” was heard before the Israeli Supreme Court and on September 11, 1972, the court ruled unanimously against Lansky. After trying to find refuge outside the United States, on November 7, 1972, Meyer Lansky returned to Miami and was promptly arrested by FBI agents aboard the plane.

In a 1988 interview with Robert Lacey, Anna Strasberg revealed that Meyer Lansky had phoned her husband, Lee Strasberg who was nominated for the 1975 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role of Hyman Roth in “The Godfather, Part II.” With her husband’s knowledge, Anna listened in on the extension. Lansky said, “You did good.” Lee replied, “Thank you. I tried.” Lansky added, almost with a sense of humor according to Anna, “Now, why couldn’t you have made me more sympathetic? After all, I am a grandfather.”
