Early Muslim Architecture, Umayyads A. D. 622-750. (TWO PARTS).

SECOND AND AMENDED EDITION WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. The author an expert on Muslim Architecture, wrote a monumental work on Muslim architecture of Egypt in 1920. In July 1919, he was appointed inspector of monuments to the military government occupying Syria and Palestine. He proceeded to Aleppo, which remained his base for three months, and travelled extensively in Syria and Palestine, inspecting Omayyad monuments. This work covers the first three centuries of Islam, i.e. A.D 622-935. In dealing with each monument the author adopted the following system: (1)a description of the original structure, (2) an analysis, and (3) architectural origins. The arrangement of this work is strictly chronological. Volumes I and II discuss extensively in three major chapters Islamic architecture with an analysis to the "Dome of the Rock", the works of Abdul Malik, al-Walid, the Mosaics of the Dome of the Rock and the Great Mosque of Damascus, the Aqsa Mosque, Qusayr Amra, the Palace of Anjai, the works of Caliphs Sulayman and Yazid II, the works of Caliphs Hisham, the Qasr Al-Hayr Aslt-Shaiqi, Khirbat Al- Hafjar, Mishatta, Qasr Ar-Tuba, and the Great Mosque at Hassan. This second edition of Creswell’s masterpiece covers nine additional monuments and is one and a half times the size of the first edition.         The Rose Series, 6 original ink, gouache and graphite works, in black, white, and shades of grey, on paper, 16 x 20 inches, one sheet signed "Joe Brainard 1964

1969. John Ashbery wrote in an Art News review of Brainard's third solo exhibition at the Landau-Alan Gallery (March 22-April 17, 1969): "Joe Brainard reminds one of Proust's gallant remark to the painter Madeleine Lemaire that she had created more roses than anyone after God. Brainard gives both a run for their money, if not with roses then with pansies, and with tulips and poppies tied for second place, row upon row of garden-variety flowers painted with meticulous deftness... The effect is always of profusion and of strangeness beyond that. What is a flower, one begins to wonder? A beautiful, living thing that at first seems to promise meaning...but remains meaningless. Here they merely continue, each as beautiful as the others, but only beautiful, with nothing behind it, and yet... The unfinished clause secretly binds the work together and raises it above a high level of provocation. All of the paintings but one are framed and glazed and they are in fine condition. Provenance: Felix Landau Gallery, Private Collection (Los Angeles). Exhibited at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY, 2011.

        Let's Get a Good Shot

Walden: Robert M. Knight. 1969. The first book by "Bobby" Knight, the legendary basketball coach and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. At the time he retired, Knight was the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history. His teams won the national championship three times and he was named national Coach of the Year four times. He also coached the U.S. national team to an Olympic Gold Medal in 1984. This book was written while Knight was coaching at Army, before he took the job at Indiana where he earned most of his honors, including 11 league championships and eight league Coach of the Year awards. Knight's 1976 Indiana team, which won the national championship, was the last major college team to go undefeated for a full season. Knight was also a controversial figure, famous for his temper: on one occasion he threw a chair across the court during a game; and Hall of Fame player Larry Bird dropped out of school and quit basketball for a time rather than play for Knight. 28 numbered pages; several scuffs to covers. Owner name, a high school basketball coach at the time, inside both front and rear covers. Very good in stapled wrappers. Scarce. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

        Claes Oldenburg Drawings and Prints

1969. First Edition . (OLDENBURG, Claes) BARO, Gene. Claes Oldenburg Drawings and Prints. Lausanne: Paul Bianchini (Editions I.R.L.), (1969). Quarto, original brown cloth gilt, original slipcase. Original etching laid in. $3000.Limited first edition of OldenburgÂ’s work, number 70 of 100 copies (out of a total edition of only 126), with an initialed original etching.Oldenburg is best known for his public art installations typically featuring very large replicas of everyday objects. In this collection of his drawings and prints, many are preliminary sketches for his sculptures. “With Claes Oldenburg the act of drawing seems wholly natural, a reflex to his inner life and to the world about him. Of course, he draws also quite deliberately, in preparation for his work in sculpture; but his preoccupation with drawing— or, rather, the ways in which drawing serves his preoccupations— goes well beyond this practical necessityÂ… They are the essential visual means by which he confronts and masters the physical world.” Of a successful drawing Oldenburg observes, “it shows the family relationship of forms, the unity of things in general.” The accompanying original etching is initialed and numbered “70/100, CO 70.” Fine condition.

        [Poster]: Como en Viet Nam

[No place - Peking?: no publisher. circa 1969]. Small poster, approximately 11" x 17". Shrinkwrapped onto foam core backer. Very slight fading along the right-hand edge, a tiny pinhole, a few small stains, still very near fine. Four-color multichrome image in the foreground of a worker oiling machinery, while the top, more vivid image is of a cheerful looking peasant loading a mortar shell. Our Spanish is minimal, but the meaning is essentially, "What it's like in Vietnam." No publication information, but this came from a small group of Chinese propaganda posters (in non-Chinese languages) printed in China, mostly dated around 1969. We have seen an online citation of this poster describing it as being produced in Australia by the anti-war movement, but we have our doubts. .

Original brown cloth, very faint waterstain to foot of spine, not affecting contents, else fine in fine dust jacket. First Edition. Illustrated with photographs. 1 vols. 8vo. Presentation Copy From The Fallen Idol Of The Phillipines. A flattering biography of the later deposed dictator. A SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY FROM MARCOS TO RAYMOND K. PRICE, JR., SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON.Inscribed on front free endpaper, "To Mr. Raymond Price / with best wishes, / F. E. Marcos". Nixon's biographer describes Price, who initially came to the White House as a speech writer, as "A rather shy, soft-spoken man [and] thirty-seven-year old former chief editorial writer for...the New York Herald Tribune...He personified the Eastern Establishment [despite which] he got on well with Nixon, for whom he developed a strong admiration and deep sense of loyalty."The presentation of this book was occasioned by Nixon's visit to the Phillipines in July, 1969 where, accompanied by Price, he scored "a public-relations triumph" [Ambrose]. Price received from Marcos several presents, as well as the promise of this book, which duly arrived at the State Department on August 19 and was delivered to Price at the White House. Accompanying the book is a mimeographed memo to Henry Kissinger concerning "Gifts from President Marcos for Members of the White House Staff", conveying it to Price; this is Mr. Price's copy. Also included is the carbon of a gracious letter from Price to Marcos thanking His Excellency for this book and his other gifts.A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY, AND A HISTORIC ARTIFACT MARKING A HIGH POINT OF THE NIXON ADMINISTRATION AND OF AMERICAN/PHILLIPINE RELATIONS.
