The Master Craftsman. An Account of the Work of T. J. Cobden-Sanderson [and] Cobden-Sanderson’s Partnership with Emery Walker.

The Adagio Press. 1969., Harper Woods, Michigan: - Folio [15 ½ x 10 ¼ inches]. 50, (4) pp. Printed in black, red & blue. Tipped in are 2 leaves from the Doves Press (one from Goethe’s Faust [1906] and one from the Doves Press Bible “The Translators to the Reader” [1902]). Original vellum backed gilt-stamped marbled boards. Bookplate of Jacob L. Chernofsky. Fine. [Accompanied by:] Cobden- Sanderson, Stella and others. A LETTER FROM STELLA. An Epilogue to the Publication of C-S The Master Craftsman. Harper Woods, MI: The Adagio Press. 1971. 8vo. [20] pp. Title & colophon printed in green & black. Pamphlet. This is copy #XLVI (limitation not stated). Printed brown wrappers, stabbed & tied at inner margin. Fine. LIMITED EDITION of 242 copies, this being copy number XLVI, signed on the limitation leaf by the printer Leonard F. Bahr [1/75 special copies]. This is the most desirable book from this press â€" wanted for the fine printing design and tastefully selected materials that honor tradition, but mostly the 2 original leaves that come from the master-printer T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, to whom this publication pays homage. The edition consisted of three different issues, each differently valued leaves â€" the better issue with vellum leave(s). The printer also differentiated the issues by lettering & numbering with the dual leaves contained in each copy: Twelve copies lettered A-L contained 2 leaves on vellum; 75 copies [I-LXXV], 1 leaf on vellum, and the remainder are 155 copies with original leaves each printed on paper. This is the 1/75 issue. As stated by Tony Bliss, Norman Strouse’s great “fascination with T. J. Cobden-Sanderson as both printer and binder led him to collect all of the Doves imprints, to expand into the collecting of the work of the Doves Bindery, the personal bindings of Cobden-Sanderson, the bindings of Cobden-Sanderson’s pupils, and the work of binders influenced by the master. To bolster this collection and make it a truly great resource for research, he acquired manuscripts and correspondence of Cobden-Sanderson. Norman used this collection in the writing of two works: C-S the Master Craftsman, (Adagio Press, 1969) and A Letter from Stella, (Adagio Press, 1971).” â€" Bancroftiana, no. 106, August 1993, p.2. [not titled, but leading, “I am always mindful.” PROVENANCE: Jake Chernofsky was the owner-editor and owner of the former AB Bookman’s Weekly (1948/53-1999), Nicholas Basbanes, calling it “the leading trade publication in the antiquarian world.” With: Broadsheet laid-in, “Emery Walker and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson in the courtyard of The Doves Press circa 1904.” Copy of a photograph taken by Dr. Charles T. Silve. With: added printed gift-card, issued from The Adagio Press. Fine clean, straight, tight (unread) book with no previous owner handwriting or markings, no soiling, fading or tanning to binding cloth, text or page edges, bright gold and red gilt and black lettering on the turquoise binding, with just a touch of softening to cloth at spine ends but the cloth isn't limp. Delacorte Press (1969), New York - In the first issue dustwrapper. Vonnegut’s masterpiece, a classic of time travel, metaphysics, and the immorality of war. "It sounds like a fantastic last-ditch effort to make sense of a lunatic universe. But there is so much more to this book. It is very tough and very funny; it is sad and delightful; and it works." --New York Times Fine, tight copy in a beautiful dustwrapper with none of the tanning or darkening normally associated with this title. Other than a touch of very light wrinkling to the spine head and a brief 1/2" closed tear to the bottom of the front panel, the dustwrapper is as close to new as one could hope for. A gorgeous copy, and uncommon as such [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Doubleday & Company, Inc, Garden City 1969 - First edition of one of Philip K. Dick's most acclaimed novels. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Philip K. Dick on the title page. A touch of rubbing, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket design by Peter Rauch. Rare and desirable signed. Ubik "features the creation of a subjective world by a group of people killed in an accident but restored to a kind of consciousness within a preservative machine, though any final determination of what is real in the book is made superbly problematical" (Clute & Nicholls, 329). "A brilliantly realized science fiction future darkened by Kafkaesque paranoia. As portrayed by Dick, a world in which cryogenic suspension has abolished traditional concepts of death and in which psychics can alter the future by changing the past is one that offers no foundation for objective truth" (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 6-113). It was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 greatest novels since 1923. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Hippolytos (printer's copy, with prospectus, inscribed by Baskin)

Northampton, Massachusetts: The Gehenna Press, 1969. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Baskin, Leonard. First edition with these illustrations, limited to 200, of which 100 were for sale, folio, approx. 41 unnumbered leaves and a suite of ten etchings, signed by Leonard Baskin. The Gehenna Press was founded by Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) in 1942, while he was studying at Yale University. Baskin was a sculptor, printmaker, illustrator, wood engraver, book artist, writer and teacher, and his work is often compared to William Blake, who was also interested in being author, artist, and printer of his work. The press closed after Baskin's death in 2000, and books printed by The Gehenna Press are highly coveted, particularly those accompanied by Baskin's unique illustrations. Some of their best known works are Sylvia Plath's "The Colossus and Other Poems," and "Crow" by Ted Hughes. "Euripides is the unsurpassed master analyst of the warring tensions in man's mind and heart... In triadic interplay, Euripides created the conceptual matrices from which have flowed our formulations of lust, chastity and guilt. Can there be a theory of guilt without Phaedra, a theory of virginity without Hippolytos? In these two... Euripides wrought archetypal figures of endless life. The Gehenna Press has embodied the monumentality of this tragedy in a splendid and austere new translation... by Robert Bagg the poet and classicist." (N.B., above quotes from prospectus.) ***DESCRIPTION: Original quarter adobe-red morocco with morocco tips, marbled paper boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, fore-edge and tail-edge uncut, plain endpapers; Centaur type (which was designed by Bruce Rogers), on pre-World War II Amalfi hand-made paper (left unused at the death of Bruce Rogers, to whom it belonged, with the paper "husbanded by the press for a book worthy of its use"), 19" x 12.5", approximately 41 unnumbered leaves printed in black and red, limited edition of 200 of which 100 were for sale, this one of the 100 not for sale and designated "printer's copy" on the colophon, which is signed by Leonard Baskin and also inscribed, "for Joel from Leonard 1987." With a separate suite of 10 etchings printed on Umbria paper (one printed in green ink), the paper measures 19" x 12.5", the etchings vary in size somewhat (most are just under 12" x 7.25") in a separate portfolio covered with cloth and matching marbled paper. The book and portfolio are both enclosed in a box with a morocco spine lettered in gilt, the sides covered in the same marbled paper. Paris sans Fin: Lithographies originales de Alberto Giacometti.

Paris Tériade Éditeur 1969 - Large 4to (34.5 x 44.8 cm). No 105 of 250 copies on vélin d'arches from a total edition of 270 copies. 150 lithographs including frontispiece, title, text and justification signed by artist. Bound by Jean-Paul Miguet (binder's mark on front pastedown) in simple geometric design with navy, pale blue and light grey morocco onlays, spine lettered in silver, grey suede endpapers, half black morocco chemise with grey suede lining, dark grey patterned boards, housed in matching slipcase. 'For Tériade it would be a milestone, the last great publication he would see through the press. The two men [Tériade and Giacometti] had maintained a close friendship ever since the Surrealist Years. The one hundred and fifty lithographs are a profoundly interpenetrating view of Giacometti's experience of Paris. He selected the plates to be printed and determined the order of their relationship, numbering each one. The frontispiece shows a nude figure of a woman plunging forward, as though diving into space, and is immediately followed by a quantity of views of city streets, then of interiors familiar to the artist. We come upon views of his studio, of the cafes he frequented, of Annette's apartment in the rue Mazarine and Caroline's in the Avenue du Maine.strangers at cafe tables, passers by, parked automobiles, the towers of Saint-Suplice, bridges across the Seine, The Eiffel Tower. To accompany the hundred and fifty plates, a text of twenty pages was planned, but the artist never got further than a few rough drafts. True, he was a devotee of words. Paris sans fin, however, said too much to the eye to be in need of other symbols.' (James Lord, Giacometti: A Biography) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
