3 letters to Mr. [Ritsaert] ten Cate concerning a NEVER REALIZED 'Sculpture as a Book' project, 1969-1970.

3 autograph letters, 25.5 x 19.6 cm, with letterhead and address 'art for all', London, dated Nov. 24, 1969; Dec. 1969; Jan. 1970, all written in brown ink and signed by both.*Folds, but in very good condition. - Ritsaert ten Cate was founder of the Mickery Gallery/Theatre. - From the contents: Nov. 24, 1969: "... Thank you for a lovely time in Holland [after the 'Posing on stairs' at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdan. Nov. 15, 1969]... We are not willing to exhibit ... in the current situation of the Mickery Gallery/Theatre... We have, however, an exciting answer - it is a sculpture as a book, an art piece as a book..., a princely volume of great George and Gilbert future art..." Dec. 1969: "... "The Book" would represent our art-thinking and art-being by use of the printed word, by the photograph and by the drawing. "The Book" would be really 'a book'... We hope very much that "Mickery" will see its way to publishing the sculpture entitled "The Book"..." Jan. 1970: "... We want only to make a good book wich is concerned purely with art. We would like you to come to regard yourself as the producer of this piece. Naturally it would be ideal for us to prepare a proto-type, but we would need a financial contribution... We would honestly like to say how happy we would be to work with you in the "Sculpture" that is a "Book". Happy new art decade to you...".

Ben-Gurion Writes to Save His Nascent University in the Negev

1969 - Autograph Letter Signed, to Avraham Zvion, December 26, 1969. 2 pp. in Hebrew, on off-white faintly-lined sheets 4 7/8 x 8 3/8 in. Translation 26.12.69Sde-BokerDear Zvion, I'm sorry for writing you things that until recently I hadn't realized that I would be required to. That's because I have admired all these years the work you've done for the Midrasha. However, your actions following our conversation, when we both agreed after a long discussion, that you won't be leaving the school's management right now but only at the end of this year, and meanwhile you'll assist the new person that will be assigned here to prepare the new education program for the Midrasha - initial university studies. You will then take two years off as education leave, and afterwards will retrieve the management of the Midrasha. I wouldn't have believed anyone that you are capable and ready to do this, an action that in my opinion may bring the destruction of the Midrashain Sde-Boker. But I have had meetings. Several female students, that have recently graduated the teacher seminar in the Midrasha, and now became fresh teachers all over the country, came to me to voice support for your claims. I heard these claims with a great sorrow, not because I didn't like it, since I'm capable of hearing claims I dislike. I was upset because those claims came from you. You invited me to Even-Ari in Avdat, and I enjoyed your invitation, since I heard interesting things about the feasibility of fertilizing the desert without Yarden, Yarkon and not through desalination of sea water. But all of this was just a preparation for your claims. I happened to arrive at the parliament for a few moments, and two good acquaintances came to visit me. One of them is a teacher Levin, who is nowadays a member of the parliament, and you recruited him to stir up the Teachers' Union against the Negev Committee. The second person, who has earned a respectful position in our modern history, is a lawyer Klausner. You summoned him to prosecute the Negev Committee. Although I honor your activities in the Midrasha and I do not have an authority to intervene in its management, as a citizen I feel an obligation to do so, since this enterprise that you managed to raise to such a level, might be sacrificed in your war against the Negev Committee. During the last meeting I spoke to you, and you came up with three new demands, claiming that if they are accepted by the Committee, you'll agree to leave for studies at the end of the year. At the meeting I did not want to acquiesce to these propositions, but I could not understand how you came up with them and how it goes along with what should be done with the head of the Teachers' Union and with Mr. Klausner. I do not know if there is any value in my writing to you nor do I think that my sorrow will change your mind. However, as one who cherishes and admires your work in the development of the Midrasha for more than five years, I feel an obligation not only towards the Midrasha, but also to you, to tell what lies on my heart. Please do not bring the destruction of the Midrasha! With respect and deep sorrow, D. Ben GurionHistoricBackgroundFollowing David Ben-Gurion's vision to build a university in the Negev desert, the construction of Midreshet-Ben Gurion began in 1963. The Midrasha was founded as a governmental corporation which owned the campus and ran all municipal affairs. The Negev Committee, headed by Ya'akov Ya'akovson, operated as the board of directors. In 1964, the Negev Committee assigned lieutenant-colonel Avraham Zvion to become the principal of the Midrasha. With heart and soul, Zvion built a vigorous community reaching over 1,000 members. He started several different specialized schools (i.e. high-school, teacher seminars) and recruited excellent teachers to join and promote the enterprise. Despite his unquestionable achievements, Zvion's character was harsh, and he did not take well to critics. (See website for full description)

Deploying overseas in November 1952, it supported construction projects in southwestern France until its return to the US on 10 September 1954. Reactivated on 1 May 1967, at Fort Bragg, the brigade deployed to Vietnam where it supported American forces for several years and a dozen campaigns. The brigade was deactivated on 20 September 1971, as American forces withdrew from the country.         A Domestic Animal.

London: Longmans, Green and Co.,, 1969. Octavo. Original orange boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, small mark to foot of rear board; an excellent copy in the bright jacket. First edition, first printing, the so-called "suppressed" edition. This edition was withdrawn before publication, rewritten, and reissued in 1970, as a result of a libel case involving the former Labour MP, and King's erstwhile friend, Tom Skeffington-Lodge. With a TLS from the author to Tom Driberg, journalist and MP, sending him the book and flippantly mentioning the libel action threatened by Skeffington-Lodge, who is referred to here as T.C. Radcliffe-Hall. He laments the unpleasantness but admits, "I suppose it was naughty of me." King had put into the book a scene based on Skeffington-Lodge's bid for a peerage. After writing to senior figures in the Labour Party, urging them to intercede on his behalf, Skeffington-Lodge received a one-line reply from Lord Attlee, expressing the hope that he would "get what he deserved"; Skeffington-Lodge took this at face value and read it aloud at a dinner party at which King was present. King then put this verbatim into A Domestic Animal, taking the precaution of disguising his original source as a female character named Dame Winifred Harcourt. Also present is a subsequent signed note from King imploring Driberg and other owners of advance copies to destroy them "without fail or return to me for destruction". The request has an unrelated but entertaining jotting by Driberg on the back.

If the portraits and street-life images win out, it is because people are more interesting then things, and the photographer himself is more challenged by people, less prone to exercising merely formal concerns, though no Ishimoto image is ever less than elegant" (Parr, Badger, The Photobook: A History volume I - p. 289) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Campo urbano. Interventi estetici nella dimensione collettiva urbana. Como 21 settembre 1969

Como: Editrice Cesare Nani, , 1969. Brossura (wrappers). Ottimo (Fine). Testo di Luciano Caramel. Completamente illustrato con fotografie di Ugo Mulas. Progetto grafico di Bruno Munari. 8vo. . Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition).
