Stop Messing About : Series One, Episode Six

Np [BBC], N.P. [London] 1969 - 30 mimeographed pp., secured with pin to top left. Initialled 'J' to top right of title page, Sims' name underlined in red, a little bumping and age-toning, but a very good copy. First edition. JOAN SIMS' WORKING COPY, WITH HER UNDERLININGS, DELETIONS AND AMENDMENTS THROUGHOUT. The BBC radio show Round The Horne, one of the medium's finest, funniest and filthiest flowerings, came to an abrupt and tragic end after four series with the death of its star, Kenneth Horne, in February 1969. Prescribed an anticoagulant for a heart condition, Horne was persuaded by a faith healer to stop taking it. He died of heart failure while presenting an awards ceremony at the Dorchester. Without its star, Round The Horne could not continue. But the material for Series Five was already far advanced at the time of Horne's death, and it was recycled into Stop Messing About, a show featuring most of Round The Horne's surviving cast -- and Joan Sims, the Carry On stalwart who had already been cast as the replacement for the departing Betty Marsden. Stop Messing About ran for a respectable two series in 1969-70, but never really emerged from the shadow of its predecessor. Kenneth Williams, a supporting actor of genius, struggled to anchor the show. But even if Williams had been able to do a better job of leading from the front, the show was still Round The Horne without Kenneth Horne, a melancholy reminder of what radio had lost. This script is the working copy used by Sims to record the sixth episode of Stop Messing About, and is extensively marked up with her underlinings, deletions and amendments throughout. Unique and beautiful.

Autograph Letter Signed, to Mrs. [William] Cowper [later Cowper-Temple].

Ruskin lived semi-permanently at Winnington Hall in the 1860s: It was a school for girls and Ruskin taught various subjects including Bible, geology, art, and music. His correspondent was his intimate and confidante in the matter of his unfortunate and unrequited love for Rose La Touche. This letter to Mrs. Cowper (née Georgianna Tollemache) colorfully, vividly, and indulgently describes the energetic merrymaking of those girls who have not gone home for Christmas holiday. There are about 14 or 15 of them and on the wet day before that of the letter they played at noisy "hide & seek all day" in the enormous building: "The house has about three quarters of a mile of up and down corridors" and presently there are "seven or eight dozen empty rooms" because of the absent girls. As per our caption, he also writes in detail about teaching songs and dances to his charges. On a personal note, he will go and have dinner with the Cowpers on Monday, he promises. The text of the letter was published from the Cook and Wedderburn transcripts in the Bodleian Library (The Winnington Letters, ed. by Van Akin Burd, Cambridge, MA: Belknap Press of Harvard University, 1969; pp. 531-32). There are two small differences in the original that are not found in the printed version. Provenance: In the stock of Thomas H. Telford, an antiques and book dealer; sold in 1933 to Mrs. W.S. Bowen of Westfield, N.J.

Archive of correspondence between director Samuel Fuller and Daniel Selznick regarding "The Eccentrics"

1969. Two typed letters signed (one with cartoon illustration) and one autograph postcard signed from director Samuel Fuller to Daniel Selznick (along with a carbon of Selznick's reply). The letters make reference to "The Eccentrics" a project that Fuller had written a screenplay for and very nearly made. Fuller notes that Janet Leigh had replaced Jennifer Jones as the current lead for the film, and also makes mention of its original title, "The Mistress." The subsequent letter from Fuller addresses the legal trouble that would eventually shut down any possibility of the film being made. Lisa Dombrowski notes: "...in the late 1960s Fuller wrote "The Eccentrics," a psychedelic melodrama set in a coastal hippie encampment and featuring interlocking romantic triangles, jealousy, betrayal, and multiple murders. ... The story concerns Sherry MacMasters, an untraditional Nobel Prize-winning author who is working on a book entitled 'Imagination is the Mistress of Riot.' For inspiration, MacMasters surrounds herself with artistic, unwashed youth who view her as a creative guru. ... By the end of the picture...she has difficulty distinguishing the real world from her dream world. Two letters: 8.5 x 11 inches. Postcard: 5 x 7 inches (13 x 18 cm). Near Fine. [Book ID 134597].

Angela Davis (Vintage Poster, circa 1969)

New York: Personality Posters, Inc, 1969. Vintage oversize poster depicting Angela Davis, with her iconic afro, speaking into a bullhorn microphone. Davis is a Civil Rights activist, Marxist, and former Black Panther Party member who became a cause célèbre for her alleged involvement in the murder of a judge and others at the Marin County Courthouse, CA in 1970. Subsequently placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, Davis became a fugitive, was caught, tried, and found not guilty, during which her cause became an international rally cry against both the treatment of African-Americans and the US criminal justice system. The photograph has never been attributed, but was likely taken circa 1969, here subsequently printed the same year by Personality Posters, Inc., a small company that produced, among other prints, a series of posters relating to iconic African-American events from the late 1960s contemporary to their occurrence. Near Fine condition, lightly but evenly toned, with professional restoration at the edges. Approximately 27.25 x 39.5 inches, linen backed, and rolled.

Shostakovich, July 23, 1969". The Tenth, arguably his most ambitious and brilliantly realized symphony was premiered only after the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. The second movement, reputed to be a portrait of Stalin, is perhaps the most exciting four minutes of orchestral music ever composed. Frame size = 13¾ " W x 12½" H. SEE PHOTOS.
