50 Jahre Madaus: Eine aufgeschlossene Firma

Dr. Maudhaus & Co, Köln am Rhein 1969 - 4to. Unpaginated (72pp. & 8pp. text booklet). Pictorial wraps in sturdy original paper-covered, printed cardboard slipcase. Wraps and slipcase protected by modern mylar. Creatively designed book by the German pharmaceutical company Madaus, published to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Profusely illustrated with over 100 b/w reproductions of photographs (many in photomontage) by Barbara Schulten, 4 color illustrations, and a total of 12 pop-up inserts, tipped-in ephemera, pull-out tabs, and pop-up figures. Includes 16 1/2" x 22" color fold-out poster of an 1930's advertisement. One fold-out illustrated with a mouse in a science lab, when opened an accordion-style pop-up creates the noise of a shrieking mouse. 8 page booklet "Haussegen! Ein Kochbuch von Frau Pastor Madaus", as well as reader-reply card laid-in, as issued. The 'Pop Art' layout and design of the work shows similarities to Andy Warhol's 1967's 'Index Book'. "Madaus, founded in 1919, is one of the world's leading producers of pharmaceuticals, particularly those produced from plants, and the book extols the virtues of homeopathy and the social role of developing new drugs to fight disease. Not only a cornucopia of design and layout ideas, it features several pop-up pages in the style of a children's book. The result combines a high purpose with a sense of fun, as if the customers of Madaus - institutions used to dealing with the question of man's mortality - could benefit from an injection of laughter into the serious business of medical research." (Parr & Badger II: 196). Minor creasing on spine, covers slightly scuffed. Slipcase with minor rubbing on head and tail of spine and edges. Minor creasing on bottom corner of color fold-out. Text in German. Tight copy in very good condition. Complete with all pop-ups & the booklet, as issued. One of the best designed and most innovative publications of company photobooks.         Bijster 1-6 [Complete]

Amsterdam: Bezige Bij G. A., 1969. 4to, each issue offset printed in b/w with color covers. Text in Dutch. All issues published of one of the defining late 60's periodicals in the Netherlands devoted to pop and counter-culture, with a constant erotic and political edge - an aspect which has historically drawn comparisons with America's Playboy magazine, though Bijster suffers in that comparison - I don't remember Borges ever being on the cover of Playboy. With work by artists and photographers throughout, including Ed van der Elsken (full page nudes in every issue, as well as a text on Harry Mulisch in the first), artwork by Remco Campert in every issue, John Anthony West's article in English on the Living Theater, and plenty of underground comics and erotic illustrations, including a generous selection of work by R. Crumb in the final issue, along with an essay about his work and underground comics. There are Dutch translations of Leonard Cohen lyrics in no. 4, poems by Jan Cremer (in English), material on Che Guevara, Bob Dylan, The Living Theater, and other contemporary figures, and interviews or work with contempory writers, including Georges Bataille, Jerzy Kosinski, J. P. Donleavy, Borges (a photograph of whom graces the cover of issue no. 2), Simon Vinkenoog, Hugo Claus et al. A very good set with wear, especially to no. 1, which has some foxing and a previous owner's signature to cover of no. 1. The remainder have occasional bumping and some short tears at spine ends, but remain sound and, with the exception of no. 1, relatively bright.

The Aubrey/Maturin novels, complete in 20 volumes. ALL SIGNED. Master and Commander; Post Captain; H.M.S. Surprise; The Mauritius Command; Desolation Island; The Fortune of War; The Surgeon's Mate; The Ionian Mission; Treason's Harbour. . .

Philadelphia, London, & New York: Lippincott, Collins and Stein and Day (1969-1999). - First editions. Master and Commander; Post Captain; H.M.S. Surprise; The Mauritius Command; Desolation Island; The Fortune of War; The Surgeon's Mate; The Ionian Mission; Treason's Harbor; The Far Side of the World; The Reverse of the Medal; The Letter of the Marque; The Thirteen-Gun Salute; The Nutmeg of Consolation; Clarrisa Oaks; The Wine-Dark Sea; The Commodore; The Yellow Admiral; The Hundred Days; Blue at the Mizzen. Master and Commander and H.M.S. Surprise are Lippincott first American editions; The Mauritius Command and Desolation Island are Stein and Day first American editions; the remaining 16 are Collins and Harper Collins first English editions. This set of books comprising the entire Aubrey/Maturin series, all signed, came from the collection of the late Richard Mattie. Mattie was decidedly the most resourceful and one of the most passionate collectors I have had the fortune of knowing in my 30+ years of book selling. Patrick O'Brian was the focal point in his large collection, and getting the books signed was an accomplishment of epic proportions. O'Brian was a noted recluse who lived in rural France and eschewed most public contact including even interviews. At the strong behest of his American publisher, O'Brian did make several trips to the United States in the mid to late 90s and did, at this time, sign copies of his later novels (Clarissa Oaks through Blue at the Mizzen). But at no time did he do a public signing for all of his large, significant opus. In April 1999 O'Brian did a "Patrick O'Brian Mediterranean Cruise" aboard the ultra-posh, exclusive Sea Cloud. Also aboard as speakers were Walter Cronkite and Bernard Cornwell. Mattie learned of this cruise and he and his wife went, along with his O'Brian collection. But getting the books signed took all of his resourcefulness. O'Brian gave one brief talk the first night out but that was his only public appearance. Mattie befriended O'Brian's personal secretary and publicist who was traveling with the author. He explained his plight and she told him that O'Brian strongly disliked signing books but she would see what she could do. She came back the next day and said that she could probably get him to sign three books a day and this, then, is what they did. Mattie left the cruise having gotten the entire set (plus several others) signed. Along with the O'Brians is Mattie's personal limited cruise-specific copy of Sea Cloud by Kurt Grobecker and Peter Neuman; signed by the Captain and Annemarie Victory (the owner) as well as by various other crew members and passengers. There are no auction records since 1995 for individual early titles in the series signed let alone for a entire set signed. This is almost certainly a singular offer with the most unimpeachable provenance. All of the books are near fine to fine in near fine to fine DJs. The Djs on Master and Commander, H.M.S Surprise and The Mauritius Command have very shallow edge wear and the one on The Far Side of the World has some spinal sunning and the book has a remainder star bottom edge. The Ionian Mission has faint tape ghosts on top of the cover boards. Each book is SIGNED on the title page with the author's printed name stricken through by O'Brian.         "Il Monumento continuo". New New York: Superstudio 1969.

Original Broadside: Post Mortem Ante Facto

New York: Situationist International, 1969. First Edition. Issued January 10, 1969 as a "supplement" to the first issue of the American journal Situationist International, the imminent publication of which it announces. Possibly the first official pronouncement of the American Situationists following their admission to the SI in December, 1968. The broadside actually pre-dates publication of the first journal issue by some six months; and though earlier materials by the same core group of authors (primarily Robert Chasse) were published in 1967-8, these were issued prior to the admission of the American Section, all under the imprint of "The Council for the Liberation of Daily Life." The current broadside is rare; the text is available via a number of internet sites, but we find no catalogued examples of the physical broadside in OCLC or museum collections. Not in RASPAUD. Broadside, 44cm x 57cm. Printed offset in black on white uncoated lithograhic paper; text in two columns beneath headline in Gothic type. Minor wrinkling at margins, else Fine.

Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade - SIGNED, with CARICATURE

Delacorte Press, New York 1969 - Near fine and appears to be unread (at least after page 17!) in a near fine unclipped dust jacket. Inscribed and signed by the author on the half title page: "For Greg Jones - Kurt Vonnegut, May 11, 1996, Butler U.". His signature is written in the middle of his customary self caricature. Vonnegut attended Butler University in Indiana but supposedly left after being told his short stories were not very good. Jacket with no wear to speak of, and with perhaps just the lightest of tanning to the spine. A truly striking copy with the increasingly rare self caricature.
