        Calendar 1970

Tokyo, 1969. First Edition. Stiff Folder. Near Fine. 39 by 29.5 cm folder, with 12 brightly colored monthly plates, 37 by 29 cm. Serizawa (1895-1984) was a much celebrated and decorated fabric and textile designer. In 1956 he was proclaimed by the Emperor "Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property", a title known outside Japan as a "Human National Treasure" of Japan. And in 1976 he was appointed Member of the Order of Cultural Merit. He began issuing calendars, each different from the prior ones, in 1946, and continued to do them until his death. The artwork and appearance of the calendars is highly distinctive, with their dazzling colors, their brash, broad-brush typography, their bold, whimsical, folk art-inspired and often playful imagery arranged idiosyncratically. Serizawa was applying his artistic sensibility and technique from textile work onto paper, and the result is unlike virtually anything else one is likely to have ever viewed. Serizawa's technique, known as "Kataezome", was a traditional one that had fallen into disuse. Basically it involved stencils combined with dye-resistent paste. Serizawa also relied on vegetable colors. In reviving Kataezome, Serizawa involved himself in every step of the process. The results bear some kinship to colorful Japanese toy catalogues, but these calendars have an explosion of color and collage-like composition that easily sets them apart from these catalogues all the same. The artwork here proclaims a freedom in so many ways, and yet they are clearly painstaking in their technique and are all of a piece and relate well to one another. Light and smallish dampstain on lower edge of folder front cover. Minor creasing to plates along edges here and there.

Les métamorphoses érotiques - choix de dessins exécutés de 1940 à 1968.

A L'Érotiade, [Paris]. 1969 - First edition. No. 99 of 300 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being one of 120 copies printed "sur vélin rives", and with an original drypoint signed by him. With a 2-page Introduction by the artist "Contre la pornographie et l'obscénité pour le dieu Eros et l'érotisme''. Quarto. Loose gatherings in satin boards, as published. The artist gives full rein to the ''critical-paranoid method" in which the imagination takes ''found'' images and pulls from them new meanings. Here for the most part he turns and twists anodyne engravings from nineteenth century catalogues and schoolbooks into obscene and sometimes disturbing forms. Dali defined his paranoid-critical method as, "a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based upon the critical-interpretive association of delirious phenomena". André Breton hailed this as an ''instrument of primary importance'' for the Surrealist movement.Covers a little bit spotted. Near fine in near-fine cloth slipcase slightly rubbed at the corners.         Outstanding Apollo XI content Buzz Aldrin letter printed on attractive embossed personal letterhead with an original piece of the Kapton foil from the command module that was flown to the moon

n.p., n.d.. 8.5" x 11". "Typed Letter Signed, ""Buzz Aldrin"", as Lunar Module Pilot - Apollo XI, 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"", n.d., n.p., to which has been affixed a small fragment of the original Kapton foil that lined the command module. Very fine condition. The letter is titled ""APOLLO 11 'KAPTON' FOIL"" and reads in full: ""On July 20, 1969, mankind's eternal dream of standing on another world was realized as Neil Armstrong and I became the first two human beings in history to walk on the Moon, during the historic voyage of Apollo XI. The spacecraft which carried Neil and me to the Moon was known at the 'Command Module' and bore the symbolic name Columbia. To protect our fragile craft from the extreme environment of deep space, a thin layer of material known as Kapton Foil gold-colored on the front and with a silver backing, was attached to the outside skin of the Columbia. This delicate foil played a critical role by reflecting the sun's intense heat off the ship, helping us to maintain comfortable temperatures within. Because the foil was attached to the outside skin of the Columbia, its gold-colored side was directly exposed to deep space. Due to the extremely fragile nature of the foil, most of it burned off the ship during our fiery 25,000 mph re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on July 24, 1969. However, a small portion of it survived, salvaged by the North American Rockwell Recovery Team on board the aircraft carrier Hornet, and carefully preserved for posterity. When reflecting on the epochal voyage of Apollo XI, I often think of the plaque left behind on the moon at Tranquility Base. It bears the inscription HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND. JULY 1969 AD. The voyage of Apollo XI was a defining moment in human evolution, when mankind lifted itself from its Earthly cradle, and began its long journey into the universe."" "

        Slaughterhouse-Five Or The Children's Crusade

New York: Delacorte, 1969. Signed on the half-title page by Kurt Vonnegut. First edition / First printing. Blue cloth. Fine in fine dust jacket. A remarkably fresh and attractive copy, with just a hint of toning to the spine of this fragile dust jacket.. The author's breakthrough masterpiece. After twenty years of struggling for critical and popular success, this book gave him the audience and recognition he had sought. The horrific firebombing of Dresden, which he witnessed as a POW, shocked Vonnegut into a lifelong distrust of the senseless and amoral violence of all war. A classic of counter-culture literature.

Archive of 59 original photographs taken at American rock shows, circa 1969

N.p.: N.p., 1969. Archive of 59 original color photographs taken by Cleveland teenager Richard Wargo at various concerts, primarily in the Cleveland area, but with three sets of photographs venturing to Houston and Austin, TX and Atlantic City, NJ, all circa 1969. Subjects include Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jethro Tull, James Gang, and others. Eight of the photographs are signed, one by Amboy Dukes era Ted Nugent, two by various members of Savoy Brown, and the rest by Cleveland area garage rockers The Choir. The majority of the photographs contained holograph notations on the verso with identifying information. A personal, candid collection taken mostly at small clubs, where the audience was close to the stage, and featuring a mix of local acts, some of whom went on to major label status, such as The Choir, The Raspberries, and James Gang, bands that would come to dominate the next decade, including Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and The Who, as well as early, rawer incarnations of 1970s icons Ted Nugent, Joe Walsh, and "Lonesome" Dave Peverett of Foghat. A unique and intimate look depicting rock and roll at the end of its first full decade, as it was lived by its primary acolyte, the American teenager, up close and immediate. 4.25 x 3.5 inches. Photographs mostly Very Good, a few Good only, with bruises or other blemishes affecting the image, though the primary subject of the photograph is visible in most. For details please inquire.

Letter to William Burroughs from Terry Southern (One page typescript letter)

N.p., N.p. 1969 - Single page, carbon typescript (the original letter presumably sent to Burroughs, this copy from Southern's estate), single spaced, with several typeovers. A friendly, sassy letter to Burroughs, beginning with an expression of Southern's great anticipation of a visit from Burroughs: "Buzz along the rialto has it that a certain grand guy W.S. Burroughs may be jetting Appleward anon. I certainly hope so, and hasten to assure that your quarters are being maintained in a state of round-the-clock readiness--with the E-meter fully serviced, tuned to needle-point precision, and porno flicks dusted and ready to roll! Meanwhile, I trust this finds you in top form and fettle, grooving there in Old Smoke."The letter goes on to speak extensively of Ed Koch's recent election win, focusing on what would appear to be a dense philosophical obsession TS has with the politician.Office stock, rectos only, 8.5 x 11 inches.
