Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1968.. Large octavo, cloth. First edition. "Mammoth attempt to picture the world as it may well be in the early twenty-first century -- overpopulated, over automated, and torn by riots and muggings. The pop sociologist Chad C. Mulligan comments wryly on it all, and he is the nearest thing to a hero in this densely peopled book. Primarily didactic in intent, it borrows surface bravura from John Dos Passos's social realist USA trilogy (1930-1936). Brunner's most successful novel." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 343. Winner of the 1969 Hugo award for best novel. 1968 Nebula nominee. Winner of the 1970 British Science Fiction Association Award for best novel and the French Prix Apollo. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-175. Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2140-45. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with light wear at edges and internal tanning to spine panel and along flap folds with no show through on the outer surface. A superior copy of this book. Praha [Prague]: Zari, 1968., 1968.. Very good. ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE CZECH POET'S CLASSIC WORK, PUBLISHED AS A SIGNED LIMITED EDITION AND ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY SEIFERT TO THE ACTOR JIRI VOSKOVEC - Octavo, 9-1/2 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound with a red silk cord in stiff printed creamy white wraps with the title and author's name stamped in black above the initials "TGM" [i.e. T.G. Masaryk] embossed in blind on the front cover. The covers are very slightly soiled. 28 pages plus the colophon, with poems printed in black and titled in red, illustrated with 4 plates printed in gray and black after drawings by Josef Capak. Near fine.
Limited edition of 300 numbered copies on handmade paper, signed & dated "28.X.68" by the author.
An association copy of this signed limited edition, additionally inscribed in Czech by Seifert to fellow Devetsil poet, the great Czech actor/writer Jiri Voskovec and dated "16.XI.68".
The typography is by Oldrich Hlavsa.
This publication of Seifert's classic work was inspired by the Prague Spring of 1968 and prepared by Rudolf Havel. In April of 1968, Seifert headed a committee formed by the Writer's Union to rehabilitate literary figures who were persecuted after the Communist takeover in 1948.
Jaroslav Seifert (1901-1986) was a leading member of the avant-garde in Czechoslovakia during the 1920's. He was one of the founders of the journal Devetsil. Seifert was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984 "for his poetry which endowed with freshness, sensuality and rich inventiveness provides a liberating image of the indomitable spirit and versatility of man".
Seifert's cycle of poems, "Osm dni" [Eight Days], first published in 1937, expresses the mood of mourning following the death of the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia Thomas Garrigue Masaryk on September 14, 1937.
Jiri [George] Voskovec was born Jiri Wachsmann [1905-1981]. He was a much revered Czech actor and playwright. After World War 1 Voskovec appeared with Jan Werich [1905-1980] as one of a comic duo in the tradition of Laurel and Hardy. "Together with Jaroslav Jezek, the father of Czech jazz, they moulded dadaism, circus, jazz, Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and American vaudeville into a new art form. They created a new form of intellectual political musical." - [Josef Skvorecky: "All the Bright Young Men and Women"]. Having created a sensation with their "Vest Pocket Revue" in April 1927, V + W were invited to join the Devetsil theatre group in May. In 1929 they renamed the group "Liberated Theatre" ["Osvobozene Divadlo"] and they took over every element of the productions. During the 1930s the productions of V + W became increasingly anti-fascist and their "Liberated Theatre" was eventually forced to close in 1938. The following year they fled to the United States. After World War 2 Voskovec settled permanently in the U.S. and Werich returned to Czechoslovakia. Both actors went on to have long careers in film, Voskovec appearing in 72 movies and Werich in more than 50. Four of their stage works were made into films: "Powder and Gasoline" [1931], "Your Money or Your Life" [1932], "Heave-ho" [1934], and "The World Belongs to Us" [1937]. Voskovec is known for his role as Juror #11 in "12 Angry Men".

        Fünf Porträts.

[Berlin um ] 1968 - Etwa 29 : 25 cm. Tusche auf Papier mit ausgesparten Gucklöchern. Signiert. 2.000 gr. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed, on art reproduction post card of a Thomas Eakins painting., postmarked New York, New York, Jan. 9, 1968

      - Johns writes to actress Ruth Ford using red felt tip pen on the address side of the card as well as the message side. He draws a wavy line down the center as if to cover the vertical type separating the two sides. "Dear Ruth, I've just got back into the city & find things a bit confused - I may be moving into a new place this [month crossed out] week. I'll call you about 'the Beard' next week. I would love to take you to see it if my housing problem is not completely out of hand by then. I hope it will not be but I try to learn to be like Mayor Lindsay, 'Neither optimistic - nor pessimistic.' As ever, Jasper." The post card was mailed in an envelope addressed to Ford by Johns in the same red ink. John Lindsay was Mayor of New York at the time. Ruth Ford was a Broadway actress, married to Zachary Scott until his death in 1965. She then lived in The Dakota, in Manhattan, with her brother, Charles Henri Ford. Charles was a poet and photographer, known as America's first Surrealist poet. He was the editor of "View" magazine. Charles was a friend of Andy Warhol. Michael McClure, the beat poet who wrote the play Johns mentions, "The Beard," was also a friend of Warhol's. The circle of beat poets, American Surrealists, and Pop artists in the 1950s and '60s arts scene in New York included all of these people as well as Robert Rauschenberg and his partner, Jasper Johns. Michael McClure's play, "The Beard," first opened at the Actor's Workshop Theater in San Francisco, December 18, 1965 and was regarded as highly controversial. When the play moved to the Fillmore in New York for the 1967-1968 theater season, it won two Obie Awards. In the letter offered here postmarked 1968, Johns clearly refers to the New York performance.
