        Fünf Porträts.

[Berlin um ] 1968 - Etwa 29 : 25 cm. Tusche auf Papier mit ausgesparten Gucklöchern. Signiert. 2.000 gr. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed, on art reproduction post card of a Thomas Eakins painting., postmarked New York, New York, Jan. 9, 1968

      - Johns writes to actress Ruth Ford using red felt tip pen on the address side of the card as well as the message side. He draws a wavy line down the center as if to cover the vertical type separating the two sides. "Dear Ruth, I've just got back into the city & find things a bit confused - I may be moving into a new place this [month crossed out] week. I'll call you about 'the Beard' next week. I would love to take you to see it if my housing problem is not completely out of hand by then. I hope it will not be but I try to learn to be like Mayor Lindsay, 'Neither optimistic - nor pessimistic.' As ever, Jasper." The post card was mailed in an envelope addressed to Ford by Johns in the same red ink. John Lindsay was Mayor of New York at the time. Ruth Ford was a Broadway actress, married to Zachary Scott until his death in 1965. She then lived in The Dakota, in Manhattan, with her brother, Charles Henri Ford. Charles was a poet and photographer, known as America's first Surrealist poet. He was the editor of "View" magazine. Charles was a friend of Andy Warhol. Michael McClure, the beat poet who wrote the play Johns mentions, "The Beard," was also a friend of Warhol's. The circle of beat poets, American Surrealists, and Pop artists in the 1950s and '60s arts scene in New York included all of these people as well as Robert Rauschenberg and his partner, Jasper Johns. Michael McClure's play, "The Beard," first opened at the Actor's Workshop Theater in San Francisco, December 18, 1965 and was regarded as highly controversial. When the play moved to the Fillmore in New York for the 1967-1968 theater season, it won two Obie Awards. In the letter offered here postmarked 1968, Johns clearly refers to the New York performance.         2001: A Space Odyssey

New American Library - Arthur C. Clarke (1968) ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, signed US first edition, first printing published by New American Library. This is Arthur’s copy, from his personal library. The half title page bears a stamp with his address in Sri Lanka, as well as a relief stamp stating ‘From the Library of Sir Arthur C. Clarke’ with a monolith as well as an Arthur C Clarke Foundation relief stamp. Signed without further inscription to the title page. The book comes with additional ephemera: Arthur’s personal business card; a book plate; photographs as well as a hand signed letter. Condition: very good with a slight lean, mild page block edge toning, and slight soiling to the board edges. The dust jacket is very good, not price clipped and has some creasing, wrinkling and short tears. Clearly Arthur was not too concerned about condition of his own book, but the provenance more than compensates for this. A landmark book of science fiction written in conjunction with Stanley Kubrick as a screenplay who filmed this as one of the best science fiction movies of all time.         Kuwait and Her Neighbours

London, George Allen and Unwin, 1968, 2nd Imp. Elegantly bound in near fine half leather binding with marbled boards. Contents fine. Colour frontis of H R H Shaikh Al Sabah. 8vo. 627pp. Frontispiece. 46 illus. on plates, 1 in rear pocket. 15 text-illus. 20 tables & maps, 6 in rear pocket.Dickson served as British Political Agent in Bahrain from 1919-1920.[4] He also served in Persia (present-day Iran). In 1929 he was appointed British Political Agent to Kuwait, and served in this role until 1936. He briefly held this role again in 1941.[5] Some of his reports have been published in Political Diaries of the Arab World: Persian Gulf 1904-1965. The publishers' description of this volume reads in part: "Perhaps the most idiosyncratic [contributor to the volume] was Lt. Col. H. R. P. Dickson who wrote voluminously in the 1920s and 1930s on his trips into the Saudi hinterland, his meetings with rulers and all the machinations and gossip that sometimes go into political intelligence-gathering."[6] After retiring from his political career he worked for the Kuwait Oil Company,[3] for which company he had been the first Chief Local Representative in Kuwait.[7] Dickson had a detailed knowledge of bedouin life and customs, and produced two books which are considered valuable chronicles of a now-threatened way of life. These books, The Arab of the Desert: A Glimpse into Badawin Life in Kuwait and Sa'udi Arabia, first published in 1949, and Kuwait and her Neighbours, first published in 1956, have been described as 'monumental',[8] and are now sought-after collector's items. Dickson had a son Saud (who died in May 2005), and a daughter (died in May 20, 2015 after a short illness) Zahra Freeth (née Dickson), who is also an author on Middle Eastern topics and who co-edited and abridged the third edition of The Arab of the Desert.
