        Berliner Goldschmiede. Daten-Werke-Zeichen.

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA.

Atheneum, New York 1968 - First edition of the author's ground breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Signed by both James Watson and Francis Crick on the title page. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Exceptionally rare signed by both Watson and Crick. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.         Vietnam War report titled "Discrimination in Administration of Military Justice" prepared for the African-American Commanding General of the 199th Infantry Brigade

[Vicinity of Saigon], 1968. Very good. This eight-page mimeographed fact sheet with typewritten cover was prepared for the Commanding General of the 199th Infantry Brigade. It is dated 15 October 1968 and was written while the unit was responsible for defending the northern approaches to Saigon. Its stated purpose was to "provide information and statistics on the imposition of punishment for offences in order to determine if the race of the accused is a factor." The report makes no determination, nor reaches any conclusion; it simply provides factual statistics regarding the stockade population, non-judicial punishments, summary courts-martial, special courts-martial, general courts-martial, and eliminations. The document is in nice shape. At the time this report was written, the Commanding General (CG) of the 199th Infantry Brigade was Brigadier General Frederick Ellis Davison, the third African-American general ever to serve in the U.S. Army and the first black general to ever lead white soldiers in combat. Davison was truly beloved and respected by the soldiers of the brigade; he was a caring, but no-nonsense commander, who, when questioned by reporters, famously asserted that he was "not going to put up with black power, or white power, or yellow power, or red power." Not surprisingly, Davison's attitude kept racial tensions in the 199th relatively low when compared to other Marine and Army units in Vietnam. It would be interesting to know why Davison asked his Staff Judge Advocate to prepare this fact sheet and even more interesting to know what use he made of it. Davison had been the Brigade CG since fall of 1967 (initially filling the role while serving as the Deputy CG when his boss was hospitalized). The 199th, which was based at Long Binh was the only significant American unit in the vicinity of Saigon when the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army launched their Tet Offensive during the night of 30-31 January 1968. Davison's reconnaissance patrols had earlier identified unusual activity in the area, and he had placed the brigade on the alert. Before the communist assault began, one of his regiment's patrols encountered and destroyed a small enemy advance force and alerted the brigade that a major assault was imminent. When the Viet Cong attack came, Davison's brigade decisively defeated the main assault and annihilated the 275th Viet Cong Regiment, killing over 900 enemy soldiers while losing only 19 men. Subsequently, the 199th attacked and destroyed the command post that had been temporarily established at the Phu Tho racetrack and then, house-by-house, cleared the western Saigon neighborhood of Cholon, which had been infiltrated by the Viet Cong. No doubt Davison's leadership prevented the Viet Cong from overrunning and occupying important South Vietnamese government offices. Exceptionally scarce. As of 2017, there are no OCLC or auction records of any similar studies about possible racial disparities with regard to military justice conducted at the behest of an African-American combat general in Vietnam. Nothing similar is for sale in the trade.

        The Beatles Yellow Submarine.

New York: New American Publishing, 1968. First edition. Small octavo, original illustrated boards. Boldly signed by Ringo Starr on the front panel. In fine condition. Yellow Submarine is a 1968 British animated musical fantasy comedy film inspired by the music of the Beatles, directed by animation producer George Dunning, and produced by United Artists and King Features Syndicate. Initial press reports stated that the Beatles themselves would provide their own character voices; however, aside from composing and performing the songs, the real Beatles participated only in the closing scene of the film, while their cartoon counterparts were voiced by other actors. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike, in contrast to some of the Beatles' previous film ventures. It has also been credited with bringing more interest in animation as a serious art form. Time commented that it "turned into a smash hit, delighting adolescents and aesthetes alike".

Recent Arab City Growth. Being primarily an arranged Selection of the Writer's Articles appearing in the Kuwaiti and Lebanese Press during 1959-1967.

Kuwait, Kuwait Government Printing Press, [1968]. Folio. Original printed wrappers; pp. xxvii, 831, highly illustrated with plans, drawings by the author and after photographs (several in colour); wrappers with light wear to extremities, one gathering bound in up-side-down; a very good copy. Very rare first edition, with printed authorial inscription on initial blank, of this impressive collection of urbanistic studies of the Middle East, including the Maghreb, essays on town planning which incorporate sociological studies and urban anthropolgy. The last page of the book informs the reader of the untimely death of the author in 1968 and gives a good biography of Saba George Shiber, who was born in Jerusalem to an Arab family in 1923, studied civil engineering and town planning at various universities in Britain, the Middle East and the US. In the late 1950s he was Chief of the Technical Bureau of the National Reconstruction Authority of Lebanon (which accounts for his articles on Lebanon and Beirut) and later the first urban planner of Kuwait. He lectured word-wide and published numerous papers. Not in the British Library.

Sedm prazskych dnu. / Sedm pra?ských dn?. 21.-27. spren 1968. Dokumentace. Studijní materiál - pouze pro vnit?ní pot?ebu. [Seven Prague Days.]

[Historickym ustavem CSAV v Praze], [Prague] 1968 - First edition. In publisher's wrappers, with the original black dust jacket. [Complete:] (6), IV, (1)-35, 37-54, (1 [blank]), 55-494, and 56 unnumbered pages with photographic reproductions scattered in 8-page gatherings. A contemporary collection of documents concerning the first week of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. An invaluable compilation of primary sources related to the occupation of Czechoslovakia which was published in only 3,000 copies by the Institute of History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences a month after the invasion in September 1968. Besides the documents, it also contains about a hundred of photographic images also taken in the first seven days of the invasion that put an end to the Prague Spring, the period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia. Although the book was published strictly as "study material, only for internal use" (Studijní materiál - pouze pro vnit?ní pot?ebu), the news of it has immediately found its way to the broader public and very soon samizdat reprints started to circulate all over the country, despite the diligence of the authorities to destroy them and their spreader just as the 800 possible masterpieces, the original copies that were sent out to libraries and institutions. The book couldn't be kept behind the Iron Curtain and its English and German translation were published already in 1969. Scarce, we could trace only three copies in European and three in North-American institutional holdings (British Library, International Institute of Social History - Amsterdam, National Library of the Czech Republic, Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library - Toronto, NYPL, Ohio State University Libraries). DJ chipped at the head of spine. The book is in fine condition. In publisher's wrappers, with the original black dust jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA.

New York: Atheneum, 1968. First edition of the author's ground breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962.
