        SUNRISE IN SUBURBIA

New York: Phoenix Book Shop, 1968. 1st edition, limited (1/26) lettered and signed, original hand tied decorated paperwraps (as issued.) There were an additional 100 copies numbered, making the total issue only 126 copies. Offered here is an author's presentation copy, inscribed by Ashbery upon publication to the theologian, novelist, editor, art and literary critic, Arthur Cohen. Cohen (1928-1986) was a long-time, close personal friend to Ashbery, and this present offering was given as a birthday present to Cohen by Ashbery. The inscription, written on the day after publication, appears on the colophon page: "John Ashbery / for Arthur Cohen / with love / Happy birthday / June 25, 1968" in blue ink. The date of publication is stated in the Kermani bibliography as "Published 24 June 1968" (Kermani A13.) A marvelous association copy between these two friends, both of whom are respected authors and art critics, offered here with minimal wear and in fine condition. As the limitation would suggest, the lettered series is exceptionally scarce, and particularly so with such a fine inscription.

THE SAN FRANCISCO ORACLE: VOLUME I, No 1 (9-20-66) - VOLUME I, No. 12 (1968) - COMPLETE IN TWELVE ISSUES

(ORACLE, THE SAN FRANCISCO). Cohen, Allen, Editor. THE SAN FRANCISCO ORACLE: VOLUME I, No 1 (9-20-66) - VOLUME I, No. 12 (1968) - COMPLETE IN TWELVE ISSUES. San Francisco. 1966-1968.: Oracle Co-operative Publishing Company, First Editions. Folio. Tabloid Illustrated Wrappers. Underground Newspaper. Very Good - or Better. Most issues circa 32pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. "The San Francisco Oracle" (alternately titled at points "S.F. Oracle" and "City of San Francisco Oracle") consisted of twelve tabloid newsprint issues published between the Fall of 1966 and the Spring of 1968. Edited primarily by Allen Cohen and art directed by Ron Bowen, its vibrant full page color graphics, ornate hand-lettering and typography, and who's who of counter-culture contributors established it as the Haight-Ashbury's most respected underground newspaper. During its brief run it featured articles on or by the likes of The Diggers, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Alan Watts, Michael McClure, Robert Creeley, Marshall McLuhan, Ken Kesey, Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Lenore Kandel, Philip Lamantia, Bill Graham, Chet Helms, John Sinclair, Steve Levine, Timothy Leary, Chester Anderson, Paul Krassner, Buckminster Fuller, Ron and Jay Thelin, Dane Rudhyar, The Esalen Institute, and visual contributions by Bruce Conner, Rick (and Ida) Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly, Ron Cobb, Thomas Weir, Michael Bowen, and many more. A handsome, full set of the twelve original issues of The Oracle showing some age-appropriate overall toning to the newsprint pages along with some light creasing, wear, and occasional dog-earing or fraying along the edges. Each is complete and intact with no major condition flaws, though issue number two shows some annotation in ink at the bottom of the front cover. Still in all, this is just about as nice a set as one could hope to encounter forty-five years later!         The Tony Hancock Show: Episode Four: The Tape-Recorder

Np [ATN 7], N.p. [Melbourne] 1968 - 31 mimeographed yellow pp., originally stapled at top left corner, now disbound, pp. 17-18 present in facsimile. 'FINAL SCRIPT' to top right of title page. Final page a little marked, light wear to title page, light vertical crease to title page and p.[ii] (Recording Schedule). First edition of Episode Four of Tony Hancock's Australian TV series, THE EPISODE DURING THE FILMING OF WHICH HANCOCK COMMITTED SUICIDE. In 1968 Tony Hancock travelled to Australia to make what he hoped would be a career-saving eight-part television series. Hancock had recently been divorced; his career was on the floor; his alcoholism was rampant. All this made success unlikely at best, but what he found in Australia doomed the project to certain failure: pitiful scripts, a poor supporting cast, and the absence of a studio audience left the show's star horribly exposed, clearly reading off cue cards, all but begging for laughs. With only three episodes completed, Hancock committed suicide with an overdose of barbiturates. His two farewell notes were written on the versos of the last two pages of his own copy of this episode. Extremely scarce. We can find no record of another copy of this script ever having been offered for public sale.

        A Charlie Brown Christmas

Cleveland and New York: World Publishing, 1968. First edition of the author's beloved Christmas title and later filmed for television, which was later honored with both an Emmy and Peabody Award. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed "Best wishes Charles M. Schulz". Uncommon, signed. Schulz's beloved cartoons have won him the National Cartoonists Society's Humor Comic Strip Award in 1962, the Reuben Award for 1955 and 1964, the Society's Elzie Segar Award in 1980, and the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Interestingly, his cartoons have also awarded him an abundance of equally colorful honors and recognitions. In 1996, Schulz was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, adjacent to Walt Disney's. And for his interest in sports he was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993 and then the Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007. Perhaps most peculiar was the bill awarded to Schulz by Bill Clinton, which was by accepted by Schulz's widow in 2001.

        American Horse-Drawn Vehicles

Bonanza Books [ca 1968], New York - Despite opposing temperaments, and excepting brief fallings-out over the termination of Evans's FSA career and, later, over Evans's comparative apathy during the HUAC hearings, Evans and Ben remained close friends for life - a rare feat, as Shahn's long list of alienated ex-associates would attest. Evans's inscription, poking fun at his own and Shahn's honorary doctorates, reveals a sense of humor and affectionate indulgence which were by all accounts prerequesites for anyone who wished to remain close with Shahn for long. By this date Shahn was quite ill; it's not certain whether the visit to which Evans refers ever took place. Quarto (28cm). Cloth boards; dustjacket; 101pp. Very Good. A Christmas gift to Ben Shahn from Walker Evans, with a long and personal gift inscription: "Dear Old Dr. Ben - This book I've just found seems to be just for you. I hear we're about to see you, at last: what a pleasure. I'm a doctor now, too, so it amuses me to name you. You've always been something of a doctor to me, anyway. And old? We're both that, I guess. Let's behave it. Nobody else dares. Merry Christmas / Much love, and to B. too / Walker / Nov 22, 1968."

        Typescript

[c. 1968]. Original typescript.. A near fine typescript.. Undated. <u>Four pages of typescript, with extensive holograph corrections</u>, given to a host of Le Carre&#39;s on Prince Edward Island in 1968. Apparently early draft pages of <i>A Small Town in Germany</i>. Although this scene did not make it, in its entirety, into the published book, parts of it seem to have been incorporated into the text in several places. Also, character names were changed prior to the final version (and at least one of the names, "Hugo", was used instead in <i>Naive and Sentimental Lover</i>). Folded in fourths; near fine. With a letter of provenance. We have seldom seen Le Carre manuscript material offered on the market and an early piece like this, with extensive corrections visible and earlier versions of the text (now excised) still present, is quite rare.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. [Helen and Kurt Wolff], 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good +. A Very Good + or better copy of the first edition, first printing (tiny rubs at spine ends and board corners, some fading to the topstain), in a Very Good +, unusually bright, dust jacket (some minor edge wrinkles, light edge rubbing, small chip a fold line and some marking to the bottom of the front panel, blue mark to the front flap&#39;s verso), SIGNED BY ITALO CALVINO on the title page; a collection of short stories, one of the author&#39;s best-known works, and winner of the National Book Award, Translation. [No longer given, the National Book Foundation gave "Translation" Award from 1967 to 1983.] Each of the book&#39;s 12 short stories uses a scientific "fact" of the day and builds an imaginative story around it. The stories are thus about the Earth and the Moon, evolution, atmosphere, daylight, dinosaurs, and the like, each containing anthropomorphized characters. An immensely important author, Calvino was, at his death, the most-translated Italian author of the modern era. Calvino won numerous literary prizes, including, among them, the The Feltrinelli Prize (1972), the Riccione Prize (1947 - for The Path to the Nest of Spiders), and the World Fantasy Award (1982 - for Lifetime Achievement) -- Calvino also received a distinction of France&#39;s Légion d&#39;Honneur (1981). Indeed, many expected that Calvino would eventually receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Signed copies of the book are extremely scarce to the market. A Very Good + copy of a noteworthy book by Italo Calvino, one of Italy&#39;s greatest writers of the modern era, SIGNED BY ITALO CALVINO. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE.

        The Woman in White

      c. 1968. Sheet size: 138 × 185 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. A white-coated "lollipop lady" sees two children safely across the road. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley&#39;s work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
