Le Cocu Magnifique

1968. PICASSO, Pablo. Le Cocu Magnifique. By Fernand Crommelynck. [3-10], 11-173, [5] pp. Illustrated with 7 etchings, 4 aquatints with etching, and 1 aquatint with drypoint and etching, all by Picasso. Oblong folio, loose as issued in the original vellum wrappers and morocco folding box, in a cloth folding box. Paris: Editions de l'Atelier Crommelynck, 1968. |~||~||~||~||~| Picasso drew on his own vast repertory of myths to illustrate this play by Crommelynck, which tells the story of a man undone by jealousy. Picasso had a lifelong relationship with Crommelynck, and he had intended to illustrate the play for quite some time before this edition finally appeared (the play was first presented in 1920). Crommelynck's sons, who had opened a printing atelier in 1963, printed many of Picasso's later prints, and produced the present work. This is one of 150 copies signed by Picasso and Crommelynck, from a total edition of 200. A mint copy of this marvelous book. Goeppert 140.

The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge

University of California Press, Berkeley and Los Angeles 1968 - Bookplate laid into the book, signed by the author in blue ink. 196 pp. Octavo [23 cm]; grey cloth covered boards, silver stamping to spine. Green and white dust jacket complete and bright, with minor edgewear and some rubbing, scratching near the folds and to the front and rear panels. Carlos Castaneda submitted this ethnological work as his master's thesis while he was graduate student of anthropology at UCLA. Castaneda would go on to write a number of other books comprising an extensive "Don Juan series" that have been translated widely and have sold millions of copies worldwide. This first book (and the books that follow) recount Castaneda's various encounters and spiritual education over many years with don Juan Matus, a Mexican Yaqui Indian Shaman/Sorcerer and group of people Castaneda called "the Toltecs". Oktober 1466/1467/1469, wahrscheinlich in Rotterdam; 11./12.

Various: Various, 1968 A somewhat stunning collection, which, taken in all its parts, is both a free-form long-span biographical sketch of the accomplished poet, artist and musician D.R. Wagner, but a moving testimony to the closeness of his relationship with fellow counterculture poet B.L. "Bari" Kennedy [see separate listing of original manuscript poems by Kennedy]. (1) CHAPBOOKS: Various locations, dates and publishers; lot of poetry chapbooks inscribed to Bari Kennedy. Included: Cruisin' at the Limit [Duck Down, Fallon NV, 1982]. Edition of 200 copies.] Signed and inscribed to Bari Kennedy; very good. The Lost Carnival & other places [Molly Moon Press, Death Crater, Ca, 1969. Edition of 500 copies.] Not signed; near fine. (2) ALSO: Seven photocopies of poems on sheets of paper, 6 of them 8x11½, the other 11x17 & folded in half twice. Several of them inscribed and signed by Wagner to B.L. "Bari" Kennedy. Includes: Coming to Our Senses Again (1991, inscribed); Cleveland Gate Illumination (1960, with poems at verso by Kent Taylor); Winter Light (1991, with one small hand correction); and the following stapled together at the top corner: Blood (undated, inscribed, and with a name, address, and markings in wax pencil and colored marker to verso); So It Turns Out That We Were Dreaming (1990, briefly inscribed but unsigned); The Little Room (1991); Poets Under Oath (1991); and Tasting the Dirt (inscribed and dated 1991). Condition: Some creases, folds, and edgewear; "Cleveland Gate" chipped at corners and toned at edges; very good to better than very good. (3) ALSO: Several Wagner ephemera items relating to Wagner and/or Kennedy. Included are 2 copies of Freethough, a free poetry tabloid with a poem by Wagner (Summer 1993, newsprint); "An Electricity of Purpose", an article on miniature tapestries by Wagner clipped from an issue of Needle Arts magazine (Sept. 1988, 5 pp. with color photographs); photocopy of "The Fulfillment of Prophecy," part of the poet's final project to receive a MFA at John F. Kennedy University (March 1992, 23 pp.); a flyer for a gallery show titled "Sculptural Furnishing," with Wagner as an exhibitor; another gallery flyer listing Wagner as contributor; a photocopy of a letter of recommendation from Wagner for fellow poet and friend Bari Kennedy; a photocopy of Wagner's promotional resume (8 pp.0; and a color crayon illustration of a weird looking hippie, possibly by Wagner, possibly portraying B.L. Kennedy. Condition: Some edgewear, some writing to verso of one page of resume; better than very good to near fine. Inscriptions to Bari Kennedy, throughout, are fairly long, artful and quite warm; this was clearly a close relationship. Wagner's resume in poetry, art, music and arts education is immense and very long-term; Kennedy's colorful history is lightly outlined under the separate listing for a notebook of his manuscript poems. L'espace littéraire

New pocket-sized edition, review copy service. Touching and valuable autograph signed by the author to his sister Marguerite: "To my dearest sister, Marguerite, this book, premises may be" the end of the book "with tender apology MB." Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relationship. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. Nice copy. Gallimard Paris 1968 11x16,5cm broché

Painter and illustrator Rockwell Kent writes about the books that inspired him including ?the first book that was to have a lasting influence on my whole life and my subsequent practice of art ? Tolstoi?s ?What Is Art??? because it proclaimed for art a purpose that proved to be to me a lasting revelation of the truth ??

Typed Letter Signed ?Rockwell Kent,? 1 page, 8.5? x 11?. On his personal stationery, Ausable Forks, New York, March 1, 1968. To Miss Evelyn B. Byrne, Bronx, New York. With original postmarked envelope. Fine condition. In full, ?Though interested by the nature of the anthology you are working on, my teenage being now so many decades in the past I find it difficult to mention specific books. Having in my infancy been taught German my first important book was ?Strewelpeter? [?Der Struwwelpeter,? a German children's book of ten illustrated rhymed stories by Heinrich Hoffmann], followed by ?Robinson Crusoe? in German. Then I read, avidly, books by the now forgotten Oliver Optic (they had been my father?s as a child), Henty [added by Kent in his hand], and Howard Pyle?s ?Robin Hood.? From that sort of thing I soon graduated to Walter Scott, a whole set of the Waverly Novels being, I believe, the first books that, with my scant savings, I was able to buy. I read and loved them all. ?Meanwhile, I got to reading poetry in Palgraves?s Golden Treasury. Then, in my late teenage I read the first book that was to have a lasting influence on my whole life and my subsequent practice of art. It was Tolstoi?s ?What Is Art?? About this time I read Carlyle?s translation of Goethe?s ?Wilhelm Meister? and loved it so much that I have subsequently read it over and over many times. Your question as to ?why? I loved certain books strikes me as being like asking a youngster, or a grown-up, why he fell in love - - though I will hazard to say in general that I found one book or another akin to me - - poetry and ?Wilhelm Meister? because they moved me deeply, and Tolstoi?s ?What Is Art? because it proclaimed for art a purpose that proved to be to me a lasting revelation of the truth. ?Possibly I was still in my teens when I read ? Thoreau?s ?Walden?. At any rate, that has always been to me a book of vast importance. Faithfully yours, Rockwell Kent? From 1966 to 1970, Evelyn Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures of the time to write back with their recollections of what books inspired them while they were teenagers. An assortment of their responses were published in the book Attacks of Taste, printed in 1971 by Gotham Book Mart.

Postal cancellation and rust marks touch handwriting. Fine condition. Addressed by Jacqueline Onassis to ?The Under Secretary of State / Nicholas de B. Katzenbach / Department of State / Washington DC / USA,? marked ?Air Mail? at upper right and ?Private? at lower left. Two Greek postage stamps affixed, postmarked Glyphada, Greece, November 21, 1968. Color photocopy of the letter to Katzenbach is present. On October 20, 1968, just 3 1/2 weeks earlier, Jacqueline Kennedy had married Aristotle Onassis, a wealthy Greek shipping magnate, who was able to provide the privacy and security she sought for herself and her children. The wedding took place on Skorpios, Onassis?s private Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The Washington Post obituary described Katzenbach as ?an unflappable lawyer who served as the Kennedy brothers? emissary to the South during the violent confrontations over racial segregation in the early 1960s and who later was an architect of landmark civil rights laws under President Johnson ... He wrote a key midnight brief during the Cuban missile crisis, challenged FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover over the wiretapping of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., conceived of the Warren Commission to investigate President John F. Kennedy?s assassination, and argued with some of the most powerful federal officials over how to extricate the country from the Vietnam War ...? When Robert F. Kennedy resigned as Attorney General to run for the U.S. Senate in 1964, he was succeeded by his Deputy Attorney General, Nicholas Katzenbach (1922-2012). In 1966, Katzenbach was appointed Under Secretary of State (1966-1969).

REJECTION LETTER FROM D.A. LEVY TO DANTE THOMAS

S.i. [1968], Cleveland, OH - Half-page ALS, written on verso of a sheet of 8.5" x 11" lined notebook paper. Neat horizontal fold at center, with some numerical notations in levy's hand scrawled on recto; Near Fine. Together with the original 8.5" x 11.5" mailing envelope; edgeworn, with small tears, postage marks; Very Good. Brief rejection letter from d.a. levy to Dante Thomas, pseudonym of Dante Thomas Zaccagnini, distinguished Professor of English at SUNY Genesco from 1966 through the early 1990's. Thomas had submitted poems for inclusion in a late (unnamed) levy publication, to which levy responded: "nice poems, but sorry - im all filled up for now - try QUIXOTE.since you did not enclose a return envelope im not even sure if you wanted this back - postage due because i cant afford it." levy was no stranger to rejection (Kent State has an entire file with rejection letter he received), and given the tone of the letter, his circumstances were clearly dire. Mailing envelope postmarked October 16, 1968; levy would take his own life little more than a month after this was mailed. Rare.
