FIRST EDITION, profusely illustrated with full-page black and white photographs. Warhol?s Moderna Muséet catalog ?is a fine example of the catalogue-as-artist's-book, a form that ostensibly began with the Dadaists and Surrealists, and is produced with some of the roughest reproductions ever seen, which are entirely appropriate, and supplemented by a long section of Factory snapshots by Billy Name. The genre was revitalized by the Pop movement, and Warhol in particular, which demonstrates his position as a latter-day Dadaist. The Moderna Museet publication especially had a great influence upon Japanese photography in the late 1960s and 1970s, particularly the photobooks of the Provoke era? (Parr and Badger, Vol II).Published by Moderna Muséet, Sweden, in 1968 as an exhibition catalogue for the show "Andy Warhol" at the Moderna Muséet in Stockholm, February - March, 1968.Stockholm: Moderna Muséet, 1968. Quarto (approx. 8.5 x 10.5 in.), original illustrated paper wrappers. Small piece of tape at top of spine; superficial split at center of glue binding (as often), everything holding. An outstanding copy of a fragile book that is extremely prone to wear. Very Good.

        Secondary Worlds

Random House, New York 1968 - 144 pp., 8vo. Quarter-cloth and paper over boards, in printed dust-jacket. A very good copy, with two minor flaws: soiling and spotting to the foredge, and a binder's flaw at the back (resulting in a slight pulling of the last signature). In an unclipped jacket with slight soiling, darkened spine, and small edge tears. Four essays, delivered in 1967 to inaugurate the series of lectures at the University of Kent in Canterbury founded in memory of T. S. Eliot. Signed by Auden below his crossed-out name on the title page (per his habit), and additionally signed by dedicatee Valerie Eliot below her name on the dedication page. (Eliot's widow Valerie was almost certainly instrumental in the choice of Auden for the inaugural lectures, which he describes in his Foreword as a "signal honor and grave responsibility.") Quite uncommon signed by Auden; and a deeply meaningful association (and very likely unique) signed by both. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in Eight Fits/Die Jagd nach dem Schnark. Agonie in acht Kr?mpfen

(Stuttgart): Manus Presse, 1968. Quarto. (104)pp. One of 130 copies, signed by the artist. Illustrated with nineteen full-page lithographs from etchings by the surrealist Max Ernst. There are also three small vignettes. This is a bilingual edition of Carroll's nonsensical epic poem about a crew of ten men in pursuit of a mythic beast. Vividly colored illustrations are paired with the original English poem, and the same images are repeated in stark black & white to accompany the German text, translated by Klaus Reichert. The Hunting of the Snark was created late in Ernst's career and was the second of three works by Lewis Carroll illustrated by him. Born in Germany, Ernst began his career in art in the 1910s, inspired by the work of post-Impressionist artists and Pablo Picasso. Although primarily a painter, he also branched out into collage, sculpture, and lithographic printing, and he finally achieved financial success after the publication of his treatise, "Beyond Painting," in 1948. Loose, as issued, in publisher's cloth chemise and slipcase. Slight fading, soiling, and a small bump to slipcase, otherwise fine.

[Broadside]: Chicago Aug. 68 A Closed Convention in a Closed City S.D.S

[Student for a Democratic Society]. 1968. Broadside measuring 15.5" x 25" tipped on 16.75" x 25.75" art board. Moderate chips and tears to the margins with two long creases affecting the broadside and some dampstaining, very good. A poster for the 1968 Democratic Convention designed by A. J. Epstein for the progressive Sixties organization, Students for a Democratic Society, depicting the Sears Tower and Mayor Daly looming above protesters and National Guard soldiers. The student group founded in 1959 with origins in the student branch of the League for Industrial Democracy was headed by Tom Hayden who had organized a series of marches in major cities and universities across the county. The group became increasingly militant, eventually splintering into several organizations, most notorious of them the terrorist group, the Weather Underground, before disbanding in the early 1970s. This poster was made for the convention and handed out to protesters but few survived the ensuing citywide rioting, culminating with the circus-like trial of the Chicago Eight conspirators of which Hayden was one. OCLC locates only two copies: one in the Terry Southern Collection at The New York Public Library and another found at the Chicago History Museum. .
