        On Meeting Authors

Wickford Press, Newburyport 1968 - First edition. Stapled wrappers with applied printed label. Fine. Copy number 12 of 250 numbered copies. Issued unsigned, this copy is Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, who has never met me. John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association, and a very uncommon title. One of Updike's earliest and scarcest limited editions. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

If He Hollers, Let Him Go! [Night Hunt] (Archive of screenplay material for the 1968 film, belonging to the casting director)

Los Angeles, CA: Various Publishers, 1968. Archive of casting call sheets, handwritten notes, and correspondence belonging to uncredited casting director Marvin Paige, and related to the production of the 1968 film, "If He Hollers, Let Him Go!" here under its working title, "Night Hunt." Overall an in-depth glimpse into the role of casting in cinema, and new insight to an early "blaxploitation" film, one that draws plot elements from film noir, including "Strangers on a Train"(1951) and "High Sierra" (1941). James Lake (Raymond St. Jacques), a black man convicted of a murder he did not commit, escapes from prison and falls into a web of intrigue that involves his brother, his former lover, and a strange man who wants Lake to murder his wife. Set in the American South. Even though it has the same title, and the two share similar racial themes, the film has virtually nothing to do with Chester Himes' 1945 novel. Included in the archive: An original screenplay, written by Charles Martin, who directed the film. The screenplay bears the working title, "Night Hunt" and contains several bound-in sheets, many with holograph notations, indicating possible choices for starring roles and shooting schedules, and a photocopied letter (dated January 9, 1968) from John Rougeot, manager of Colorvision Studios (short-lived), expressing his thoughts on production budgeting. Among those considered to star in the film were Van Johnson, Barry Sullivan, Brad Dillman, Peter Lawford, Jennifer Jones, Jane Wyman, Maureen O'Hara, Anne Baxter, Rita Hayworth, Sue Lyon, and Joy Harmon. Shooting and budget schedules, including a budget schedule with names and contact information for starring performers, their work dates and salaries, and their agents. A brief film synopsis and press information on stationery from the Patricia Fitzgerald Company, a public relations company, accompanied by two vintage black-and-white single weight reference still photographs from the film. A mailing envelope from Kaplan, Livingston, Goodwin, Berkoqitz and Selvin (attorneys at law), addressed to Marvin Paige, and dated October 1968. The envelope also bears a label with the film's title, obscuring another film title, "Take the Money and Run," a 1969 Woody Allen film for which Paige also directed casting. Also of note is an ad for the 1968 Jerry Paris film, "How Sweet It Is!", as part of the postmark. Script: Orange titled wrappers, noted as copy No. 14 in holograph ink, with a credit for screenwriter Martin. Title page not present. 146 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 103. Mimeograph with several holograph leaves bound in, and undated blue and pink revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. Shooting/budget schedules: 2 leaves corner-stitched, folded horizontally at the middle, 8.5 x 14 inches (shooting); 3 loose leaves folded vertically at the middle, 10 x 14 inches (budget). Photographically reproduced with holograph notations throughout. Near Fine. Press information/film synopsis: 8 leaves corner-stitched, mimeograph, 8.5 x 11 inches, with two vintage 8 x 10 still photographs. Near Fine. Mailing envelope: 10 x 13 inches, manila, holograph notations on the front with FIRST CLASS rubber stamps overall. Very Good plus, Complete collation details available upon request.         MASH (Original screenplay for the 1970 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1968. First Draft script for the 1970 film. Based on the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker. It's a little difficult to believe the Robert Altman was not the first choice to direct the film, as it became the film that, as much as any of his best work, has come to epitomize a patented style of "controlled chaos" as a means of narrative storytelling. In this case, the "chaos" is a medical camp situated in the middle of the Korean conflict, and rarely has an American film walked the line between comedy and drama with such grace. A film that kick-started a great decade of cinema, and one that still defines it. Winner of a Palme d'Or (1970), and an Academy Award. Blue titled wrappers, noted as FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped production No. 5059.2, dated November 1, 1968. Title page present, undated, noted as First Draft Screenplay, with credits for screenwriter Lardner, Jr. and novelist Hooker. 158 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 156. Mechanically reproduced, with photographically reproduced leaves throughout, on eye-rest green stock. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. Davenport, pp. 219-221.

Uptight (Collection of ephemera from the 1968 film, including original scenario artwork)

Los Angeles, CA: Paramount Pictures, 1968. An extraordinary collection of ephemera from the 1968 film, the centerpiece of which is a large piece of original artwork by production designer Alexander Trauner. Also included are a US one sheet poster, US half sheet poster, US insert poster, US pressbook, Australian daybill poster (with the alternate title "Up Tight"), and a German A1 poster (with the alternate title "Black Power").An overlooked and exceedingly important African-American film, the first film to deal with contemporary black revolutionaries who rose in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Today the film is considered a work that seeded the explosion of Blaxploitation films in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. The story's events surround the death of Martin Luther King, framed as a remake of "The Informer" (John Ford, ), in turn based on the 1925 proletarian novel by Liam O'Flaherty. Shot on location in Cleveland, the first US film for noted director Dassin (who had left the US at the height of the McCarthy hearings) in nearly two decades. The scenario drawing depicts a meeting of black revolutionaries at their headquarters in an abandoned Cleveland?bowling alley, after the death of Martin Luther King and following a gun heist and?murder. Signed in the lower right corner with the designer's Hungarian birth?surname, "Trau." Executed in gouache, ink, watercolor, pen, and pencil.Seen by very few upon its release, UPTIGHT was restored and released on blu-ray in 2014 by the curated label Olive Films. A copy of the disc is included with the piece. All pieces about Near Fine or better, with the artwork showing a small watercolor tide mark at one corner.Artwork 17 x 24 inches (43 x 61 cm). US one sheet 27 x 41 inches (69 x 104 cm). US half sheet 22 x 28 inches (56 x 71 cm). US insert poster 14 x 36 inches (36 x 91 cm). US pressbook 15 x 12 inches (38 x 30 cm). Australian daybill 13 x 30 inches (33 x 76 cm), folded as issued. German A1 poster 23 x 33 inches (58 x 84 cm), folded as issued. Kodikologische Beschreibung der Handschrift von F. Unterkircher, Wien. Kunstgeschichtliche Bearbeitung von A. De Schryver, Gent. - Eines von 1000 Exemplaren. In tadelloser Erhaltung. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
