[Geographic Maps of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia]. [Washington & Jiddah, 1968-1982].

1968. 21 sheets in full colour, each 101 x 103 to 88 x 63 cm approx., folded in original printed envelopes with individual titles. English and Arabic. Scale 1:500,000; relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Complete collection of the detailed geographical maps ("B" series) of Saudi Arabia (but also covering Bahrain and Qatar) prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arabian American Oil Company under the joint sponsorship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Department of State. "Although the search for oil, gas and minerals was ultimately to drive geological survey work across the region [...], in its early years it was the need for water that was the catalyst for Saudi Arabia's resource exploration. In 1944 King 'Abd al-'Aziz approached the United States for a technical expert who could assist with the identification and plotting of the kingdom's natural resources, particularly its groundwater reserves [...] By 1954 the Saudi Ministry of Finance, USGS and Aramco were working together to produce the first full series of geographic and geologic maps of the country. The first of their type in the Peninsula, these were published between 1960 and 1963 in both Arabic and English versions, and the information they contained formed the basis of subsequent Saudi national development plans. To this day, all modern maps of the kingdom trace their roots back to these first publications" (Parry). The surveyors divided the Peninsula into 21 quadrangular sections, numbered 200 through 220. Mixed copy conflated from both the U.S. and the Saudi-Arabian series, prefixed "I" and "GM", respectively. Well preserved. James V. Parry, "Mapping Arabia", in: Saudi Aramco World 2004/1, p. 20ff.

Apologie ou defense, contre une response des Ministres de la nouvelle eglise d'Orleans, escripte en leur nom, par Je ne sçay qui, se nommant, L'un pour tous.Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1561. 5 works in 1 volume. 8vo. 18th-century(?) sheepskin parchment.

J.N. Bakhuizen van den Brink, "De seconde epistre van Gervien Hervat", in: Ned. Archief v. Kerkgesch., 48 (1968), pp. 169-212 (discussing all 4 Hervet works); USTC 45253 (cf. 88267, barely distinguishable), 4528, 20245, 41867, 740 (ads 1-5); cf. Brunet III, 137-138; STC French p. 224; none in Adams; for Hervet: Nouv. Biogr. Gén. 24, cols. 536-40; G. Wylie Sypher, "'Faisant ce qu'il leur vient a plaisir': the image of Protestantism in French Catholic polemic on the eve of the religious wars", in: Sixteenth century journal, 11/2 (1980), pp. 59-84. Five rare French polemical works on the Counter-Reformation, all first published in 1561, here with three or four in their first editions: 3 barbed anti-Protestant "Epistres" by the translator, patristic scholar and defender of the Catholic faith Gentien Hervet (1499-1584), with the third known copy of the first and only edition of an anonymous Protestant Response to one or both of the Deux epistres and the first edition of Hervet's Apologie defending his views against the claims of the Response. Hervet states in his Apologie that he does not know the name of the author of the Response and therefore addresses him as "Monsieur l'Un pour Tous", but the Response was addressed to "fideles de l'Eglise Reformee d'Orleans" and the Apologie title-page supposes the Response came from the "Ministres de la nouvelle eglise d'Orleans", so it may have been written by Daniel Toussain (1541-1602), ordained in the Orléans Reformed Church in 1561. The first epistle (ad 1) is addressed to the devout Catholics, warning them of the Protestants, but the next two (ads 2 & 3) are more provocatively addressed to the ministers and supporters of the new Protestant Church. This provoked the Response, which in turn provoked Hervet's Apologia. All five editions are rare, but especially the anonymous Response (ad 4). The USTC records only 2 copies, and records no other edition. With 3 contemporary or near contemporary inscriptions on the title-page, 2 struck through (1 perhaps reading "Robert Rey" or "Reny" or "Reng") and the third by "Francois Thiboult", this last repeated on the Response title-page. With contemporary ms. annotations in ink in all 5 works. First title-page sightly soiled and some light, most marginal waterstains in the last work, but still in good condition. Five rare works by and responding to the French Counter-Reformationist Gentian Hervet.

Parachute to Paradise (Original screenplay for the unreleased 1969 film)

American Broadcasting Company [ABC], New York 1968 - Revised draft script for the unreleased 1969 film, "Parachute to Paradise," with a single notation on the title page. Written for screen by Allan Gittler, the New York-based minimalist designer of electric guitars, and a virtuoso musician, who later changed his name to Avraham Bar Rashi. Gittler was a film editor in New York during the 1960s and 1970s, patented a photographic printer for motion pictures, wrote a novel called "The Rose-Colored View," and made an 18-minute short film called "New York, New York, New York," comprised of 700 photo stills, and a score that he and jazzman Elvin Jones composed. He died in 2003.Roger Davis, an actor in the film, notes that it was completed, but not shown until a broadcast on ABC in 1972. Davis: "[It was] written by the late guitar designer Allan Gittler (a.k.a. Avraham Bar Rashi,), directed by Floyd L. Petersen [sic], scored by [noted jazz arranger] Gil Evans, and also starred Natividad Abascal, Astrid Aanning, Martin J. Kelley, Bret Morrison, and the Boston garage band, The Bagatelle. was an avant-garde 'film fantasy' where Roger played the hero of a popular cigarette commercial campaign who happens to skydive. It was filmed in the summer of 1968 (beginning June 3) during Roger's short leave of absence from 'Dark Shadows'. ABC televised the movie in 1972, at the height of Roger's popularity on 'Alias Smith and Jones.' Since [the film] has gone ignored by IMDB and other web sources, here are some reflections provided by writer Gittler to 'Vintage Guitar' magazine in 2000: 'I had had enough of my career, and quit to ride my track bike through Central Park and write the script of my movie, 'Parachute to Paradise.' After the heartiness of 15 weeks of preproduction, casting the principal players and 200 extras, seven weeks of principal photography, writing the music, and seven months of editing and (doing) enormous publicity, a fallout with my producer relegated the production to a couple of cans in the laboratory vault.'"Gittler's only film credit: guitarist in "Hold for Gloria Christmas," an episode of "Naked City" (Season 4, Episode 1, 1962).Purple titled wrappers, with a credit for Gittler. Title page present, noted as "a film," with a credit for Gittler. 71 leaves, mimeograph, with white revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/11/68 and 3/20/68.         Isadora (Original screenplay for the 1968 film)

Universal Pictures, Universal City, CA 1968 - Draft British script for the 1968 film. A high spot for Vanessa Redgrave in the 1960s, a story that follows the life of the free spirited modern interpretive dancer Isadora Duncan. From Dan Pavlides at Allmovie: Trained in classical dance, Duncan shattered the traditional conformities in her art and her personal life. The film begins at the end of her life as she recalls the past while dictating her memoirs to her male secretary. Her uninhibited sexuality and insistence on personal freedom and expression shocked more conservative and narrow-minded patrons and audiences. She brought in elements of classic Greek dance during the height of the jazz age and had children in and out of wedlock. Married to sewing-machine heir Paris Singer (Jason Robards) and the Russian poet Sergei Essenin (Ivan Tchenko), her life was a rollercoaster ride of success and tragic failures. Two of her children drowned when her chauffeur left the car unattended and the vehicle plunged into a river. Duncan lived by her own rules, often shunned by the very people who had so passionately embraced her pioneering efforts in dance, women's liberation and free thinking. Redgrave was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. The film's locales are international and range from California to Europe and the Soviet Union. Shot on location in various places in England, Italy, France, and Eastern Europe. Red titled wrappers, with a die-cut title window in the British style. Title page present. 142 leaves, roneograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with two gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

La Turista [Rare Galleys of His First Full-Length Play]

Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis 1968 - The galley sheets of this early play by Shepard, his first two-act play. Laid in are the galleys of Elizabeth Hardwick's introduction, dated 1967; Hardwick had reviewed the play for the New York Review of Books. At the time Shepard wrote La Turista, he was a member of the counterculture rock band The Holy Modal Rounders, which had a cameo appearance in the film Easy Rider. Shepard may be most widely known these days as an actor: he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as test pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff; but he won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for Buried Child, and he has won eleven Obie awards and been nominated for two Tonys, for Buried Child and True West. He received the Gold Medal for Drama from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1992. Claspbound, printed on rectos only, front cover tanned and separating; rear cover has date and price and "DUPL NYPL." Front cover has the name of Paul Myers, curator of the Theatre Collection at the New York Public Library. Very good. A fragile and rare early state of this play by one of the most important playwrights of the latter half of the 20th century. The only copy of the proof we have seen. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sixth New York Film Festival (Original Poster)

Lincoln Center / List Art Poster and Print Program, New York 1968 - Original serigraph designed by artist Henry Pearson for the Sixth New York Film Festival, held at the Lincoln Center on September 17-28, 1968.The New York Film Festival was founded in 1963 by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, and to this day serves as a major taste-maker for American cinephiles, bringing the best films from around the world by directors established, new, and forgotten. The 1968 festival began with Jiri Menzel's "Capricious Summer," concluded with Milos Forman's "The Fireman's Ball" and featured "The Boy with the Green Hair" by Joseph Losey and "They Live By Night" by Nicholas Ray among its retrospective features. As influential and forward-thinking as the festival is, it is matched by its iconic poster designs. Developed by Vera List, a New York City art collector and philanthropist, the poster program commissioned some the most famous artist of the day to design posters that would function as much as art as advertisement. In addition to Pearson, artists who have designed posters for the festival include Larry Rivers, Saul Bass, Bruce Conner, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cindy Sherman.Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde ciné-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the time like Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, James Broughton, Kenneth Anger, Sidney Peterson, Bruce Conner, Carmen D'Avino and many others. In 1963, together with Richard Roud, he founded the New York Film Festival, and served as its program director until 1968. In 1973, Vogel started the Annenberg Cinematheque at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually given a Chair for film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, where he taught and lectured for two decades.Fine condition, with light wrinkles at the bottom third. 29.25 X 45 inches, linen backed and rolled. First printing of Barnard's second publication (here under the heading "Historical Milestones") on the seminal performance of the world's first human heart transplantations, one of the most important medical performances in the course of history - "the most publicised event in world medical history". This medical breakthrough introduced to the world a way to prolong life that would become of seminal importance to modern man. Barnard famously carried out the world's first human-to-human heart transplant on December 3 1967, which he described in a paper three weeks later. The patent, Louis Washkansky, a 54-year-old grocer suffering from diabetes and incurable heart disease, died of double pneumonia on December 21 that same year. But nonetheless, the operation became a worldrenowned success. Merely a month later, on January 2 1968, Barnard conducted the world's second human heart transplant, inscribing himself into history once again. This time, the patient, Philip Blaiberg, survived for 19 months. The present paper is the first to describe these two seminal performances together."Christiaan (Chris) Barnard was born in 1922 and qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1946. Following surgical training in South Africa and the USA, Barnard established a successful open-heart surgery programme at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 1958. In 1967, he led the team that performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant. The article describing this remarkable achievement was published in the South African Medical Journal just three weeks after the event and is one of the most cited articles in the cardiovascular field. In the lay media as well, this first transplant remains the most publicised event in world medical history. Although the first heart transplant patient survived only 18 days, four of Groote Schuur Hospital's first 10 patients survived for more than one year, two living for 13 and 23 years, respectively. This relative success amid many failures worldwide did much to generate guarded optimism that heart transplantation would eventually become a viable therapeutic option. This first heart transplant and subsequent ongoing research in cardiac transplantation at the University of Cape Town and in a few other dedicated centres over the subsequent 15 years laid the foundation for heart transplantation to become a well-established form of therapy for end-stage cardiac disease. During this period from 1968 to 1983, Chris Barnard and his team continued to make major contributions to organ transplantation, notably the development of the heterotopic ( 'piggy-back') heart transplants; advancing the concept of brain death, organ donation and other related ethical issues; better preservation and protection of the donor heart (including hypothermic perfusion storage of the heart; studies on the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of brain death; and even early attempts at xenotransplantation."
