The Penguin. (John Lennon in His Own Write. A Spaniard in the Works). MET ORIGINELE, GESIGNEERDE TEKENING.

(Harmondsworth), Penguin Books, (1968). Paperback. 160 p. Geïllustreerd door by John Lennon.

Collection of papers of John M. Bailey, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, concerning the convention

1968 - More than 50 items. Good condition, organized in plastic sheets in an old red vinyl three-ring binder. The 1968 Democratic National Convention of 1968, held in Chicago, was a landmark event in American political history. John M. Bailey of Connecticut, who had helped to orchestrate Johnson’s landslide victory in 1964, oversaw the contentious presidential campaign of 1968, in which Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, and others sought the Democratic nomination. This collection of papers to and by longtime Democratic National Committee Chairman John M. Bailey includes: • Eugene McCarthy, 3-page telegram requesting an opportunity appear before the Committee to present his argument that “the administration’s course in Vietnam is dangerous and wrong.” • Various papers by the McCarthy campaign concerning its goals and requesting information concerning officers, seating, and other logistical matters at the convention. In the end the party was less than helpful to the McCarthy campaign, instead unifying behind Humphrey. These papers help to reveal the struggles of the McCarthy campaign to present its dissenting views. • Convention press kit containing biographies, maps, flyers, and a poster. • Correspondence concerning credentials and passes. • Correspondence and press releases concerning the status of the campaign, ranging from state delegates voicing their concerns to a copy of Bailey’s memorandum to the White House reporting on developments state-by-state. • Copies of a letter signed by Kennedy two weeks before his assassination with a note stating that his family agreed to its distribution. The 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago saw protests and riots outside the convention and a bitterly contested fight inside the convention hall ultimately leading to the nomination of Hubert Humphrey, who lost to Nixon in November.

        Moshe Dayan

n.d.. A rare glimpse into the personal thoughts of General Moshe Dayan. The first note is an actual exchange of notes between Dayan and another senior member of his party. The senior member wrote to Dayan in Hebrew: <I>"Moshe, some vital political information: after you visited Ben Gurion he was visited by Shimon (Peres), Ben Porat and Surkis. He was asked why he didn't attend Eshkol's funeral and he replied I don't want to go to his funeral and I don't expect him to come to mine."</I> Dayan replied on the other side of this note: <I>"Since they didn't understand what he [Ben Gurion] said here are some clarifications A: B.G. [Ben Gurion] said that when he was offered to come to the funeral of [Eshkol] they emphasized that after all, Eshkol is now dead, He [Ben Gurion] replied: He is not dead!!! Look how they commemorate his image in the radio and the newspapers, B."</I> Since Eshkol didn't go to Ben Gurion's funeral even after he [Eshkol] buried him [Ben Gurion politically speaking]. The third note reads, <I>"From a certain point of view the physical death of Eshkol was a moral and political blow for Ben Gurion since he will no longer be able to achieve his [Eshkol] political fall down. Eshkol managed to end his way in a public climax and the show is now over. Ben Gurion will not be able to prove Eshkol's incompatibility to be a Prime Minister, etc."</I> This is amazing first hand evidence for the bad relations between these two historical leaders of Israel and the labor party. The second Dayan note was written on July 1968, <I>"Don't you think that I had only tension and to the case in question I had nothing."</I> Dayan wrote this note to a fellow member of the labor party's chamber meeting after the 6 day war when he was Israel Minister of Defense and he felt unpopular in this political forum and especially with Igal Alon and his party "Achdut Ha'Avoda" and Mapay since they held him responsible for the deposition of Eshkol from his second position as Minister of Defense prior to the six days war.

        Myra Breckinridge.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1968 - Octavo. Original black boards, gilt titles to spine, publisher's device to front board in blind, dark grey endpapers. Slightly rolled, top corners slightly bumped. A good copy in the dust jacket, front flap creased, with a few large chips to extremities. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author to gay publisher Winston Leyland on the half-title: "W.L. best wishes Gore Vidal 1 - 11 - 81", with Leyland's signature to the first page. Loosely inserted is a letter sent from La Rondinaia by Vidal to Leyland in 1977. The letter begins "Dear Mr. Leyland, There is nothing unpublished worth publishing (this does not work put the other way 'round)" and goes on to discuss Leyland's interview with Tennesee Williams, and registering his surprise to read Williams' claim that he didn't mind the "fag-baiting" that had dogged him in the 40s and 50s, Vidal instead reminding Leyland of Williams's intense paranoia of being spied upon by "the Luce gang". Winston Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing who won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era, including Vidal himself. This is a great association for Vidal's satirical classic, which Dennis Altman acknowledged as "part of a major cultural assault on the assumed norms of gender and sexuality which swept the western world in the late 1960s and early 1970s".         Three Women; A Monologue for Three Voices

Turret Books, Privately printed at Oficyna Stanislawa Gliwy, London 1968 - Number 102 of 180 copies, first edition in book form, quarto size, [24] pp. "Three Women" is a poetic work that was written especially for broadcasting; the production was recorded on August 2, 1962 and broadcast on September 13 (N.B., these dates from Douglas Cleverdon's preface). Some critics consider this work her finest and most touching, a simple but dramatically effective sequence of monologues by three women, each having had a very different experience of childbirth, with the voices constructing a discourse "in which women's bodies, consciousness and experience are at the center". This is the first time the work was published as a book, not many years after Plath's death.___DESCRIPTION: Original beige cloth with lettering and illustration in gilt to upper board, gilt lettering to backstrip, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page in red and black, frontispiece a linocut of three women by Stanislaw Gliwa, preface with large red initial, page numbers, title and ornaments all in red at the top of each page throughout, one additional illustration at the end of the text of three roses; Bembo type, T.H. Saunders mould-made paper, quarto size (11" by 9"), pagination: [1-4] 5-22 [23] [1 colophon], first edition in book form, limited, this number 102 of 180 copies.___CONDITION: A near fine copy, with clean paper boards, corners straight and unrubbed, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, beautifully printed and internally bright, entirely free of prior owner markings; except for a hint of foxing at the top-edge, a fine copy in an acetate wrapper.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       1968-1975. Seven letters, totaling 18 pages, written to her friend, the novelist and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer. Owens was back in New York by this time, after a decade spent living in the expatriate community in Paris supporting herself writing soft porn for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press, under the name Harriet Daimler. After Claude, her first novel under her own name, would be published in 1973. One autograph letter signed and six typed letters signed, densely packed, with thoughts on her own writing, the writing of others, sex, family, food, exercise, publishing, and writers' colonies. Also includes what seems to be retained copies of two partial letters from Wurlitzer as well: one to Owens, one to someone named Claus, typed on Owens' stationery while staying at the Chelsea hotel. Evidence of a close friendship, enacted over a decade, with Owens' no holds barred personality on display throughout. Mailing folds, an odd collage adhered to the verso of one letter, over what appears to be a handwritten postscript; else all elements are fine. No Binding. Fine.

        MASH

New York: William Morrow & Company, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. Very Good. Hardcover appears very nice and unmarked until under very close inspection when subtle evidence of removal of library markings present themselves, all very faint (tape marks to boards, removal of bookplate to end papers, erasure at prelims). In a Very Good dust jacket with price of $4.95 intact, light general wear, fading to spine panel with a bit of scraping near crown. A very presentable copy with a dubious institutional past.
