        The Lieutenant

NY: Dial. 1967. His first book, and his only novel -- a military tale not unlike William Styron's book The Long March -- a story of the peacetime military and the challenges to manhood and honor that its rigid code of morals creates. Dubus was once quoted as saying that after he wrote this novel someone introduced him to Chekhov's short stories, and he threw away the manuscript of what was to be his next novel and began writing short fiction -- of which he became one of our most acclaimed and accomplished practitioners. This copy is stamped "Sale" on the front flyleaf, but is otherwise fine in a fine, price-clipped dust jacket with a speck of rubbing on the rear panel. A very sharp copy of a book that seldom turns up in this condition. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

At the bottom it reads, cynically, "now we have fooled ourselves into having a 'purpose' for the present. our thanx to d.a. for his recent action [i.e. his suicide], which allowed for this accomplishment." The condition of this piece has been graded as B: Very Good Condition, with signs of handling or age. Published by Berggruen, Paris. Number 50 in ‘Chagall's Posters - A Cataloque Raisonne', Sorlier, 1975. Mounted on linen.Chagall's early life left him with a "powerful visual memory and a pictorial intelligence". After living in France and experiencing the atmosphere of artistic freedom, his "vision soared and he created a new reality, one that drew on both his inner and outer worlds." But it was the images and memories of his early years in Belarus that would sustain his art for more than 70 years.Of circus people he said, "Why am I so touched by their make-up and grimaces? With them I can move forward toward new horizons. Chaplin seeks to do in film what I am trying to do in my paintings. He is perhaps the only artist today I could get along with without having to say a single word." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

VG.This charming ghost story was written by Alan, 8th Duke of Northumberland and published in 1930. As stated in the preface his son Hugh, 10th Duke, decided with his friend Col C. G. Lancaster to reprint the book in a small limited edition for their friends. Almost certainly it woulld have been Col. Lancaster who owned Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire, near to the home of B.B., who would have suggested commisioning him to illustrate the book. The book was never made available to the general public. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
