Planet of the Apes. Final Revised Screenplay.

Apjac Productions for Twentieth Century-Fox, (1967). 144 pages, Mimeographed on "eye-rest green" paper, brad-bound in mimeographed orange wrappers. "Final Revised Screenplay", dated on the cover April 18, 1967, with two blue revised pages dated 4/20 and 4/24. The cover is also marked with the legend "Confidential. Please do not reveal the contents of this script." A rare copy of this late revision, complete with the surprise ending, which was kept secret and not included in most copies of the script. Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) and Michael Wilson received credit for the screenplay which Serling adapted from Pierre Boulle's novel. Wilson had been been blacklisted in the 1950s for being a communist and was only belatedly credited for some of his most important work (e.g. Friendly Persuasion (1956), and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), like Planet of the Apes adapted from a Pierre Boulle novel. Some pen marks on the first page, fine.

To the Lighthouse' with an accompanying typed letter signed by Virginia Woolf's husband Leonard to John Penman (Leonard, 1880-1969, Author, Publisher and husband of Virginia)

1967 - with autograph amendments concerning some text in the book, he says "I think there is no doubt that the explanation is what you call an aposiopesis. This is confirmed by the dash and the repetition of the words 'he slipped' immediately after the word 'bore'. The whole piece between the words 'he slipped' and 'he slipped' is a running thought which breaks off without the completion of the sentence ." and ends that the same text appears in the first edition, together with a copy of the book with Mr Penman's ownership inscription, 1 side oblong 8vo., Monk's House, Rodmell, Lewes, 25th October They have been discussing this paragraph from Chapter 8 in the book: "Mrs Ramsay could have wished that her husband had not chosen that moment to stop. Why had he not gone as he said to watch the children playing cricket? But he did not speak; he looked; he nodded; he approved; he went on. He slipped, seeing before him that hedge which had over and over again rounded some pause, signified some conclusion, seeing his wife and child, seeing again the urns with the trailing of red geraniums which had so often decorated processes of thought, and bore, written up among their leaves, as if they were scraps of paper on which one scribbles notes in the rush of reading—he slipped, seeing all this, smoothly into speculation suggested by an article in THE TIMES about the number of Americans who visit Shakespeare's house every year. If Shakespeare had never existed, he asked, would the world have differed much from what it is today? Does the progress of civilization depend upon great men?" Aposiopesis is defined as 'the device of suddenly breaking off in speech'. [Attributes: First Edition]
