Gilt spine title, illustration blind stamped on the upper board. A dozen psalms printed in handset Cancelleresca Bastarda, each beginning with an original hand drawn initial and illustration. One of 100 copies, this being No, 74. This is one of the early treasures produced by St. Teresa's Press in its golden age of fine book production. Spine lightly sunned and traces of offset form the leather at the beginning and end else this is a near fine copy.

        Four Pianos: Three Evenings of Music by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York City (Original poster for the 1967 performance)

      New York: Park Place Gallery, 1967. Poster advertising an early performance by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York on March 17, 18, and 19, 1967, also featuring Max Neuhaus performing and "distributing" a new piece called "BI-PRODUCT" (currently listed on Neuhaus' website as "By-Product," in contravenance of the poster). In 1967 Steve Reich wrote a prototype piece, "Slow Motion Sound" that involved two separate pairs of hands clapping out of phase and coming into phase over the course of 144 bars. Though it was the foundation of all his work that would follow, it was not recorded until 1994 (by Chris Hughes). Reich worked the same concept into his first "traditional" piece, "Four Organs" in 1970.This performance represents a bridge between "Slow Motion Sound" and "Four Organs," only conceived as "Four Pianos" instead. "Four Pianos" was never formally recorded, only performed. Texas composer Max Neuhaus was in the 1960s a renowned percussionist and interpreter of contemporary music who at this point was moving toward his ultimate identity as a pioneer of artistic work in sound, and would become one of the innovators of sound works and the concept of sound installations. Blue card stock with printing in black, 7 x 10 inches (18 x 25.5 cm). Near Fine with just a touch of fading at the edges.

      New York: Galeria Bonino, 1967. Complete set of four matching exhibition catalogs for a staggered series of installations by avant-garde film director Robert Breer, held at the Galeria Bonino in New York between 1965 and 1970. The first catalog is for an exhibition at the gallery titled "Constructions and Films," and was held in early 1965, noted as Exhibition No. 10. The other three catalogs deal with exhibitions of Breer's "floats," three-dimensional geometric shapes that the director would construct, then roll down a street as one would a float in a parade--though typically Breer chose rural roads as a means of offsetting the sheer modernity of his objects. Each catalog ends with a list of Breer's exhibitions to date. These three exhibitions, titled "Floats," "More Floats," and "93 Floats," were held at the gallery in 1966, 1967, and 1970, and are labeled Exhibition Nos. 18, 29, and 44, respectively. All four volumes Near Fine or better, each in saddle stitched wrappers, with light occasional rubbing.

        Autograph Letter Signed to fellow suffragette Emily Pierson regarding the death of Spencer Tracy

      N.p.: N.p., 1967. An intimate and extremely moving autograph letter signed from Katharine Hepburn to longtime fellow suffragette Emily Pierson, regarding the death of Spencer Tracy. Equally as touching as the content is the fact that the letter is executed on Tracy's personal stationery, with Hepburn's St. Ives Street address in Los Angeles added by hand at the top right corner. An amazing piece, a triumvural association relating to the most famous cinematic love affair of the twentieth century and, more subtly, to Hepburn's long association with the women's suffrage movement in the United States. Though undated the letter was clearly written within days of Tracy's passing on June 10, 1967. After a decades-long and much publicized love affair with Hepburn, Tracy (who never divorced his wife) spent the majority of the final two years of his life with his great love. Hepburn describes in some detail her last moments with him, sentiments she would later echo in her autobiography: "It was a massive coronary at 3AM. I'm sure he'd had no feelings of anything weird because he did not ring my bell. I heard him go down the hall to [the] kitchen. I got up to keep him--I knew he was going to make a cup of tea, [and] I always left a kettle on the boil. And as I put my hand on the kitchen door I heard a sigh and a crash, and across the room I went. He was totally dead--a great exit, the best--and Spence was tired out. I used to wonder how in hell that darling heart kept beating. I don't know what I'll do, but I'll let you know. ... Kath." 9.5 x 6.25 inches. Single leaf, executed on recto and verso in black ink.         The Equinox of the Gods benefit concert celebration for Lucifer Rising at The Straight Theater in San Francisco, September 21, 1967

      San Francisco: The Bringers of Light / The Straight Theatre, 1967. Original poster, designed by Randy Salas, for "The Equinox of the Gods," a celebration by Kenneth Anger commemorating the autumn equinox and a benefit to raise money for the completion of Anger's "Lucifer Rising" (eventually released in 1980). The celebration was held at the Straight Theatre on Haight St., San Francisco on September 21, 1967. It featured an Aleister Crowley ceremony performed by Anger, with live music by Bobby Beausoleil's The Magick Powerhouse of Oz, as well as other performances. Anger had a career-long fascination with the mystic and magical, but "Lucifer Rising" was the first of his films to directly address such themes. The film was partially shot in Egypt and is dominated by the iconography of ancient Egyptian religion. Ra, the solar deity portrayed on the poster, his headdress bearing the mark of the beast, 666, is an idea Anger would pursue in the film. At the time of the "The Equinox of the Gods" celebration, Bobby Beausoleil was cast as Lucifer, though his role in the film changed after he fell out with Anger over his involvement with drugs. Anger accused Beausoleil of stealing footage from the film, after which Anger moved to London and Beausoleil relocated to Charles Manson's Spahn Ranch. In 1969, on Manson's instruction, Beausoleil murdered Gary Hinman and was sentenced to life imprisonment. When in London, Anger solicited the help of Jimmy Page to score the film, but Page's work was never integrated with the film. In the mid-1970s, with the footage complete, Anger approached Beausoleil, while still in prison, to score and perform the soundtrack. Footage from the "Equinox of the Gods" celebration was shot by Ben Van Meter and later used in Anger's "Invocation of my Demon Brother" (1969). Poster 21.5 x 29 inches, rolled. Fine.       Hermann, Paris 1967 - A rare early work by the acclaimed Belgian painter and illustrator, published two years prior to his first one-man show in New York. Folon's hopeful note regarding Shahn's health is particularly poignant, as it must date from early April 1967 - the beginning of a precipitous decline in Shahn's health which would end in his death in early 1969, and just weeks before the sudden, devastating death in London of his daughter Susanna. Folon's reference to permissions for Shahn's Sacco-Vanzetti paintings is elusive; we can find no evidence that Folon ever borrowed the Sacco-Vanzetti theme in his own work. Original black linen-covered boards with paper cover label, 9.5cm x 12.5cm; unpaged (24 leaves). Warmly and lengthily inscribed to Ben Shahn on second blank, in Folon's miniscule hand: "Mr. Ben Shahn, Un grand merci pour votre lettre et pour l'autorisation concernant Sacco-Vanzetti.       1967 - A Nobel Prize winner, one of the most important South American literary works of the 20th century. 1967. Buenos Aires. Editorial Sudamericana. In 8vo (196 mm x 130 mm). 351. Pictorial wrappers in excellent condition, only a little darkened and rubbed. Housed in a handsome half morocco case over boards, with inlays of morocco emulating the cover of the book, spine flat, lettered in gilt. Uniform browning as often, else very good. First edition. This can only be regarded as Garcia Marquez’ masterpiece, the book that would earn him the Nobel Prize for literature –along with others- and a position in the ranks of the major league for contemporary authors. As expected the book that ultimately popularized South American literature was an immediate bestseller, with three editions published the same year in June and December, this being the real first edition, published in May. The editorial company was in a rush to have the book published, so it neglected to utilize the image Marquez wanted for the cover, later editions actually have the image he wanted. A small quantity of original typescripts, printed typescripts and photocopied typescripts, many secured with staple to top left corner, and many with handwritten amendments, additions and deletions. Housed in a blue card folder bearing a typed white paper label label reading TERRY JONES & MIKE PALIN. Some wear and toning consistent with their age, staples mostly rusted, otherwise in near fine condition. A SMALL QUANTITY OF ORIGINAL, PRINTED AND PHOTOCOPIED TYPESCRIPTS OF SKETCHES WRITTEN BY TERRY JONES AND MICHAEL PALIN FOR FROST ON SUNDAY AND THE FROST REPORT, WITH EXTENSIVE CORRECTIONS, AMENDMENTS AND REWRITES BY BOTH. Terry Jones and Michael Palin first met as undergraduates at Oxford and, after graduating, began writing together for TV comedy shows. All the future Pythons save Terry Gilliam worked together for the first time on The Frost Report (1966-7), which also featured, both as writers and performers, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. The show ran for twenty-eight episodes over two series, and launched everyone who was to be anyone in British comedy for the next twenty years. Less well-known but just as formative for those who worked on it, Frost On Sunday ran for thirty-six episodes between 1968 and 1970. It again featured the two Ronnies, and featured among its writers Barry Cryer, David Nobbs, Esmonde and Larbey, Dick Vosburgh, Neil Shand -- and Jones and Palin, once again writing as a team. Although the programme only ever credited the pair as writers on two late episodes, the material offered here shows that the pair were an integral part of the team from the show's beginning. This remarkable collection features one sketch written for The Frost Report.; most of the rest of the material was written for Frost On Sunday. Many episodes of the show were wiped and are now presumed lost; the surviving material has been released on a 3-disc DVD distributed by Network.         The Comedians. Collection of 19 vintage black-and-white single weight reference photographs from the UK release of the 1967 film.

      8 x 10 inches. 19 photographs. Stills have tiny pinholes (some multiple) at the corners, and light wear at the extremities, one photograph with reapired chip to lower edge, otherwise in very good condition. The notations on the verso of each photograph have been crossed through in black marker. The last of 5 screenplays written by Graham Greene, 4 of which were adapted from his novels. British director Peter Glenville signed on for the production, which was co-produced by the US and France. The fourth of 10 films starring both Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and a role for which Taylor cut her normal $1 million salary in half when Glenville told her Sophia Loren had been offered the part. The images include 3 photographs of Burton and Taylor in amorous clinch.

      8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A little creasing to wrapper that also has a couple of stains on the inside and a few nicks, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Thompson's first published book which launched Thompson's career as a writer. Though he had by then published numerous articles for various journals and newspapers and was recognized as a journalist, the book was his first true exposure to a national audience. Reviews of the work were generally very positive and despite a poor performance on the publicity tour by Thompson, who was by his own admission drunk or exhausted for nearly every interview, the book sold relatively well.

        Contract for "The Green Knight" 5th December 1967.

      One contract of 6 pages, typescript on thin typing paper 32.5 x 20 cm stapled to red card backing, signed by Mick Jagger, Christopher Gibbs and Nigel Lesmoir Gordon, plus Marianne Faithfull, Jagger's then girlfriend, as witness; with a typescript film treatment of 16 pages stapled together at top left, 29 x 22 cm, with manuscript annotations; a little chipping to folds, a little browning, very good. This unique pair of documents records a highly ambitious project that sadly never came to fruition. As Marianne Faithfull recalls in Faithfull: An Autobiography (2000): "Mick began taking acting lessons ...Then there was THE MAN WHO SHOT MICK JAGGER and a whole slew of hippie projects. Christopher Gibbs and Nigel Gordon had written a script based on the mystical Middle English romance GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT. Mick was going to play the Green Knight - Mick and Keith do the Middle Ages!" (pp. 149-50). Not only was Jagger going to star, this was also likely to be his debut as a producer. The contract here is between Jagger and Christopher Gibbs, his interior designer, and Nigel Gordon, a film editor working for the producer David Cammell, to produce a 25 page treatment of the legend of Sir Gawain to be called provisionally, The Green Knight. The two writers were to begin work on Christmas Day 1967 and deliver the treatment by 1st May 1968. We cannot be sure when the pair delivered their work, but it was nine pages short and had transformed from The Green Knight into The story of Venus and the quest for Arthur's kingdom, a tale set initially in a Welsh gold mine in 1700 and New York in 1968 before settling on an Arthurian England of knights, mystical ladies and an improbable red floating sphere. The project never went any further than this, but it is a fascinating snapshot of the projects that Jagger, the Rolling Stones and the counter-culture in general were beginning to get involved in as the 1960s progressed and their ambitions grew. Neither was this the end of the road for Gibbs and Gordon as film collaborators with Jagger - Gibbs was employed as Consultant Designer on Jagger's breakthrough film Performance, while Gordon's boss David Cammell, the brother of the movie's director Donald Cammell, was a co-producer.
