[Corrected typed manuscript of] AT THE JERUSALEM

[ Np], 1967. [3],253 leaves. Quarto. Carbon typescript (prelims and final leaf of text in original typescript), typed on rectos only, with occasional insertions in manuscript. Very good. A late draft of the author's first novel, subsequently published by Cape (and Atheneum in the U.S.) in 1967, and the recipient of the Somerset Maugham Award for its year and an Arts Council award. The insertions, and in a few cases revisions, are generally single words, and involve matters of uniformity of tense and agreement. Accompanied by a set of bound page proofs of the UK edition, with ink annotations on the upper wrapper, inside the rear wrapper, and on the last page of text, in an unknown hand.

Finian's Rainbow (Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1967 film)

Burbank: Warner Brothers / Seven Arts, 1967. Four title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1967 film. Based on the 1947 musical by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy, who also adapted the story to the screen. The four maquettes in this archive are stylistically similar, but quite different from the titles used in the finished film. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "Finian's Rainbow" his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Justine" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947, but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands, holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct, with his realistic, New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material, and the results were decidedly mixed, despite a widely-loved performance by Clark. Each study 16 x 8 inches, containing a reproduction of a color landscape photograph mounted on board and matted in black, with two plastic overlays - one with white lettering, and the second with color embellishments to the letters attached to the top of the mats with tape. Very Good plus condition overall.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

New York: Hill & Wang, 1967. First edition thus. 308pp. Octavo [21 cm] Maroon cloth with title gilt stamped on backstrip. Good/Very good. Jacket chipped at corners and split at folds all with tape "repairs". Library label on Jacket's spine at foot. Front free endsheet damaged from bookplate removal. Library stamp at foot of title page. A volume from the library of Edward Abbey. This copy signed and dated by the author: "Abbey/Tucson '68" in red ink on the front free endsheet. Additionally inscribed to the author by his soon to be deceased third wife: "1/29/68/ Tucson/Pooh darling, Happy 41st/All My Love,/Judy P." The inscription is dated on Abbey's 41st birthday and inscribed to him by his third wife Judy, who would not long after this inscription, die of leukemia in a New Jersey hospital, leaving both her not yet famous husband, and an infant daughter, Susannah behind. The year is also significant, being the same year as Desert Solitaire, the author's most famous work was published. The mysterious author of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" , B. Traven was also a hero of Abbey's and his themes of anarchy, identity and revolution echo in Abbey's own work. An extraordinary association copy and a unique Abbey artifact. Additionally signed by the author on the bottom edge of the book in large block letters "ABBEY". When Edward Abbey moved from Moab, Utah to Tucson, Arizona, he donated some books from his personal library to the Grand County Library in Moab. This copy bears the stamp of the library on the title page and has all of the usual library markings. Although not marked discard, this copy was purchased (although not by us) at a Grand County library sale. Treverton 333

Original painting in gouache and wash with gold highlights on heavy art paper depicting parts of the interior of "The Old Met" in New York at 1411 Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets during a performance, the audience on numerous tiers. Signed "Gropper" at bottom right. Undated, but ca. 1965-66, very close to the date of demolition of "The Old Met" in 1967

      - 508 x 380 mm. (20" x 15"). Unframed. Remnants of paper tape to upper margin of verso. Gropper, a social realist, was a pupil of George Bellows and Robert Henri. He was active in New York as a painter, lithographer, cartoonist, and illustrator. His work is held in New York by both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deeply involved in the radical politics of the 1920s and 30s, Gropper contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. He went on a tour of Soviet Russia with the novelists Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Russia Revolution in 1927. During the second half of the 1930s, he dedicated his art to efforts to raise opposition to fascism in Europe. After visiting Eastern Europe in 1948, he decided to make one painting a year as a memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953."The Metropolitan Opera said goodbye to its old house on April 16, 1966, with a sentimental gala farewell performance featuring nearly all of the company's current leading artists. The long time Met star soprano Zinka Milanov made her last Met appearance that night and among the many invited guests was soprano Anna Case who had made her debut at the house in 1909. The final performance at the opera house was given not by the Met but the Bolshoi Ballet, which concluded a short run of appearances on May 8, 1966. Despite a campaign to preserve the theater, it failed to obtain landmark status and the old Met was razed in 1967. " WikipediaThe present painting was executed very close to the date of the farewell performance referred to above.

        Collected Poems: 1924 - 1955 [Signed]

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good or perhaps better copy of the First American Edition -- also being the first edition in English, first printing (modest rubbing and slight pushing at spine ends, surface rubs to the board corners, upper leading board corners bumped, minor age darkening to the top of the page block, page block settled with a gap between the spine head and the closed page block), in a Very Good dust jacket (with the toning common to this title and light corner wear panel corners), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has marked through his printed name. (The dust jacket is translucent and carries the Publisher's list of Princeton paperbacks on the verso.) The book presents a collection of George Seferis' Poetry, written over a three-decade period, in parallel text with the Poems given in Greek on the verso of the leaves and the English translation thereof presented on each facing recto. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Copies of this title are rather scarce to the market and signed copies of Seferis' works in translation are quite scarce to the market. A Very Good or better copy of a rather scarce book from the winner of a Nobel Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS. QUITE SCARCE.

        OPERAÇÃO 1

      - Organização de E. M. de Melo e Castro. Edição dos autores. Lisboa. 1967.

        The Outsiders

New York: Viking, 1967. First edition. 188 pp. A fine copy in original red-lettered cloth, just a tiny bit creasing to head and tail of spine of dust jacket, lower corner of front flap clipped, but not price clipped. First edition. 188 pp. ONE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN COMING-OF-AGE NOVELS. One of modern literature's most remarkable debuts: a classic coming of age novel and a gritty, unflinching look at American youth culture, written by a seventeen-year-old S.E. Hinton. Narrated by Ponyboy Curtis, a Greaser in war against again the Socs, we watch him and his brothers, Dally and Soda, try to stick together in the wake of their parent's death. The book is now a staple of middle and high-school reading lists. Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film adaptation was a breakout film for the Brat Pack. This is the best copy we've had of this title.
