The Day We Got Drunk On Cake

Bodley Head, 1967. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine blue boards, very nice clean endpapers and pages. The very near fine dustjacket is fractionally browned at the spine, where there are a few small bits of foxing by the author's name, and is slightly rubbed to the rear panel, otherwise it looks really well and is not price-clipped. A very nice copy, in essence, of the first printing of the author's fourth book, his first collection of short stories, and quite scarce today.

        Typed letter signed. Vence, 22. V. 1967.

1967. 4to. 1 p. To publisher Alecto Book in London, on the card game they are about to publish. Dubuffet finds the specimen model excellent but adds that if the impression is on a different sheet of paper and not on the card itself, they will have to be conscious about the collage: "[...] [...]". - He adds in a post-scriptum that M. Jaeger, from the Jeanne Bucher gallery, submitted the English translation of the text that will serve as instructions for use. The original edition of this card game, named "Banque de l'Hourloup, playing and drawing cards", was published in 350 numbered copies in an illustrated casing.

New York: Dial Press, 1967. : , 1967. SIGNED hardcover first edition - Dubus's first - and only full-length - novel, a story of military life in peacetime, but in essence about the conflict between idealism and expediency. Dubus served for 5 years in the US Marines and knew well the world of which he was writing. In comments quoted on the back cover, Richard Yates described this as a 'fine, tense, wholly absorbing novel. You can read it at one sitting and miss none of its power, but it deserves to be studied for the skill of its construction and the complexity of its interlocking ironies.' SIGNED on the title page and uncommon thus. Near fine in a very near fine dust jacket (slight shelfwear and a bit of fading to the boards, small spot to upper edge of textblock, but overall much better condition than this is usually found - especially the rather fragile dustjacket which is white and unmarked.) .

        The Lieutenant

NY: Dial. 1967. His first book, and his only novel, a story of the peacetime military and the challenges to manhood and honor that its rigid code of morals creates. Dubus was once quoted as saying that after he wrote this novel someone introduced him to Chekhov's short stories, and he threw away the manuscript of what was to be his next novel and began writing short fiction -- to become one of our most acclaimed and accomplished practitioners. Signed by the author. Fine in a very near fine dust jacket with very mild shelf wear. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine.
