        Fuck the System

New York: Privately Printed, 1967. Paperback. Very Good. First edition. 30 pp. Stapled b/w wraps. Near Fine with a bit of age-toning and a few faint stains to wraps, worn along spine. A rare manual of mischief, as advertised, but more than that a compendium of free goodies available around and about New York City, from provocative Yippie activist Abbie Hoffman under the pseudonym of the famous "Mad Bomber" George Metesky. It was his first book, a prototype for the much better known Steal This Book.

Leiden, Holland: E. J. Brill, 1967., 1967. First edition. First edition. Quarto. Cloth, gold gilt stamping on front cover and spine, [8], 123 pp., frontis., preface by the author, list of abbreviations, introduction, numerous illustrations, map, index, addenda and corrigenda. Van Gulik died in September 1967, and during May of that year he finished his last book, THE GIBBON IN CHINA. He had kept monkeys since his youth and anyone who ever interviewed him mentions this unusual company. He couldn't keep gibbons in Holland because the climate is too drafty and moist for them to survive. They thrived in his oriental homes and Van Gulik was very close to them, regarding them highly as pet owners of dogs and cats tend to do. A gibbon is a primate, can walk on its hindlegs, have no tail, and like to reason. They are fairly friendly and the Chinese were aware of the gracious animal and signal its peculiarities in their literature. An excellent study of the gibbon in China. Fine copy including the 33 1/3 gramophone record of the musical calls of the gibbon in a pocket attached to the rear pastedown sheet. Van Gulik was a Dutch diplomat to China for many years and his writings on China and its culture are extensive. A choice item and perhaps the most comprehensive study on the subject. Scarce.

Four Pianos: Three Evenings of Music by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York City (Original poster for the 1967 performance)

Park Place Gallery, New York 1967 - Poster advertising an early performance by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York on March 17, 18, and 19, 1967, also featuring Max Neuhaus performing and "distributing" a new piece called "BI-PRODUCT" (currently listed on Neuhaus' website as "By-Product," in contravenance of the poster). In 1967 Steve Reich wrote a prototype piece, "Slow Motion Sound" that involved two separate pairs of hands clapping out of phase and coming into phase over the course of 144 bars. Though it was the foundation of all his work that would follow, it was not recorded until 1994 (by Chris Hughes). Reich worked the same concept into his first "traditional" piece, "Four Organs" in 1970.This performance represents a bridge between "Slow Motion Sound" and "Four Organs," only conceived as "Four Pianos" instead. "Four Pianos" was never formally recorded, only performed.Texas composer Max Neuhaus was in the 1960s a renowned percussionist and interpreter of contemporary music who at this point was moving toward his ultimate identity as a pioneer of artistic work in sound, and would become one of the innovators of sound works and the concept of sound installations.Blue card stock with printing in black, 7 x 10 inches (18 x 25.5 cm). Near Fine with just a touch of fading at the edges.

Sovracoperta leggermente sciupata (Worn, soiled and chipped dust jacket). Prima edizione (First edition). [Roth, 2004]. Autograph letter signed. Pacific Palisades, 14. II. 1967.

1967. Large 4to. 2 pp. To a photographer named Bishop: "Got your letter and samples of photo experiments. You must not think because I used 'glum + sombre' that I was disparaging your work. It's simply that I can't stand the 'sad gorilla' aspect of myself which I often see in photos. Of the hundreds of photos people have taken from me there are only about a half-dozen I really like (when you come again I'll show you my favourite one). In general photography leaves me cold. I never used a camera in my life. Nor will I in the future. Now and then in magazines I find photos I like - could be in a good or cheap magazine. These experimental ones you just sent - I must confess they too leave me cold. Too slick for my taste. Too commercial. But I'm prejudiced - so don't take it hard. I hung out with advertising men, salesmen and artists both, when in my twenties - and became thoroly [!] disgusted with everything which they found exciting [...]". - On stationery with printed letterhead.

Dahai hangxing kao duoshou; gan geming dao de shi Mao Zedong sixiang [= Sailing the seas depends on the helmsman; Making revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought]

[Lhasa]: Xizang Da Lianzhi 121 Gelian, 1967. Approx. 11" x 8", pp. [62]; tan paper wrappers, crudely sewn at spine; a mimeographed songbook of Chinese Revolutionary songs, duplicated by mimeograph from at least four separate hands, in two colors, and with eclectic pagination, suggesting that this volume was cobbled together from multiple sources. The songs are a collection of both Red Guard standards and materials focused on local interests, such as Xizang Hao, or Tibet is Good. The music is notated using numbered musical notation, or jianpu. The publishers, Da Lianzhi, were one faction among many in China's Red Guard. They operated primarily in Lhasa, and were comprised primarily of foreign Han party members. Red Guard factions were often centered around the personalities of their leadership, and competed for regional influence. The Da Lianzi therefore often clashed with other Red Guard groups, including factions that drew from native Tibetan communist sympathizers. Eventually such competition became violent, and in 1968 the People's Liberation Army forcibly suppressed the Red Guards and recentralized control.
